  1. I posted this over in the post-op forum, then remembered things over here. Sorry if it is a duplicate! I'm back. It is hard to believe it has been 16 months since banding! I've lost 65 pounds, but have basically plateaued in the last 6 months. I just got a fill yesterday and am definitely feeling a difference. I started running last summer and actually ran/walked a 5k. Then I developed a bladder problem and that slowed me to a stop. I'm told it is more age related, not weight loss related. Now that its under control, I'm starting back to my exercise. Winter is just not cooperating! While I haven't loss weight recently, my clothing size is smaller,so I'm guessing in dealing with the weight of muscle compared to fat. What I m struggling with is a change in surgeon, as mine moved out of state. I within the same center, but the difference in philosophy is creating stress. I think he is basically anti-band and pro- bypass. Anyway, he's telling me that revised stats show only 10% of banders achieve weight loss goals! And that many are having the band removed and getting bypass done because the band hasn't worked. My band has worked, and I know that with a 65% loss of pounds over target, I'm ahead of the stats. But it still bothers me. Have the stats changed? Is the success rate less than we were told two years ago? Are the failures due to those who don't follow the guidelines? (That is what my first surgeon said- that the total stats included tho who drank their calories, didn't exercise, and didn't use the band as a tool to change behaviors) What are all of you hearing? How are you doing on weight loss continuing the second year? Are you struggling or is it going the way you thought?

    Pregnancy later in life

I have been banded 3 years. I am considering a tubal ligation revision to have a baby. It would put me roughly at 44 to get pregnant. Has anyone had a successful pregnancy at that age? I am so concerned of down syndrome and other defects.
  3. Hi I actually started this Bariatric Surgery in the beginning of 2013. I had the lap band put in July 2013. My HW ever was 255. My LW after the band was 225, and because I had problems with them getting me in the Green (Right) Zone. I couldn't lose anymore and as of the beginning of 2016 I was at my highest post Lap Band in 2013 which was 244.4. Considering to have a revision, I called my insurance company who said the maximum number of Bariatric Surgeries was 2, I decided to start the Process. I had my revision done in one day on Nov 14, 2016, the day after my 50th Birthday, at which time I was down to 231. Also, I actually almost backed out the day of surgery, but so glad I didn't. As of today Dec 17, 2016 I'm down to 218.8, AND I'M DETERMINED WITH THE HELP OF GOD TO REACH MY GOAL. A suggestion for anyone considering any of these surgeries for the first time or revision, PLEASE PRAY AND ASK GOD, WHICH I DID EACH TIME, AND HE GAVE ME THE OK EACH TIME. SO HERE I AM TODAY. Ps I'd recommend the Sleeve Over The Band. Yes the band can be reversed and said to be the safest, but if you don't get the Right Fill, you'll probably end up like me losing then gaining some back and headed back in the wrong direction overall.

    Larger Bougie Size For Exbandits

It took me close to a year to get the courage to revise from a band to a sleeve. I had all the same fears... fear of reflux, fear of failing AGAIN, fear of horrible complications and it not being "reversible". I am just a few months out, but feeling very confident this was the right decision. I am not saying it is easy, but I love that i am not hungry all the time. When I eat a meal, it is not just a pouch that fills, it is your whole stomach and to me I feel pretty normal, just eat small quantities. I never felt normal with the band. I think people who have been through a band first find some of the "challenges" with the sleeve to be a piece of cake by comparison. The main thing that was harder with the sleeve was the exhaustion/recovery during the first 6 weeks post surgery. I don't remember anything like that after being banded. I have a long way to go on my weight loss journey, but so far, hands down, 1000% better then the lapband.
  5. It is relative to each patient. The best he could give you would be averages, and I don't think a lot of surgeons are yet tracking AGB - VSG revisions yet. It would be nice if he had some current data to give you. There are also a lot of variables. For example, length of time banded may play a role, as does success while banded, and reasons for that success (e.g. did you actually change behaviors in a positive way, or did you just irp up everything you tried to shove down as though you were eating pre-op). The statistics also vary for AGB -> VSG "all in one" procedures (removal and revision at the same time) compared to requiring a waiting period (so do the rates for complications). My surgeon's statistics are currently about 80% EWL with a virgin sleeve. 70% - 80% EWL with his mandated waiting period between revision procedures. 60% - 75% EWL simultaneous procedures. (Complication rates from simultaneous procedures to stayed procedures ran about 20% less, respectively). I know it's been beat to death, but remember it really is a tool. Weight loss will happen if you work with your tool. Weight loss will not be automatic. Not with this procedure, anyway.
  6. Bypass all the way! I see way too many revisions from sleeve to bypass on this board. I decided on bypass and never looked back
  7. Travelmego, Here is the link, called Gastric Sleeve Surgery (Sleeve Gastrectomy)- Dr. Jose Rodriquez with BeLiteWeight.com The total cost with all the finance charges will be 8500.00, cash price is 7200.00. I am considered a revision since I had the lap band in 2005, so I am a bit more. Thanks for the articles. The rate of infection is high even in the U.S., I have worked in several outpatient surgery centers and hospitals across the U.S. that didn't have the sterile technique of this video. Just because we are in the U.S. doesn't mean we are safe. There are a couple of things you can do before surgery that will help prevent infection, I plan to do them as well. 1. Scrub entire body with Hibiclens the night before your surgery. This can be purchased at Wal Mart. Pay special attention to the abdomen washing down. 2. Take a q-tip and apply Neosporin to the inside of your nares. Not much just coat the nares before surgery. There are several You Tube videos of this hospital if you search................ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2FVNzDCONE
  8. Hi, Thank you for the tips - What is Hibiclens -and just curious but how does applying it the night before help? Won't the body just get recontaminated from the sheets and stuff while you sleep? I have never heard of Hibiclens before. What are nares? (I can google it) By the way, I didn't mean the articles specifically for you because I know you already knew the info lol. I made a thread with a bunch of videos of various surgeons in Mexico doing the sleeve. Check it out and tell me what you think of them if you have time. I would love your feedback. Rodriguez is a bit pricey for me.How much did he charge you extra for being a revision? Usually it is 500, I think. That does bring him down into my second option range of 6,500. However, I still am hoping to find a surgeon in the 4,500 range that 'ticks the boxes' as someone in another thread said. If nothing else, hopefully this thread will make people more aware of the issue and demand excellent sterile techniques from whichever doctor they choose regardless where that doctor is located. In the case of Mexico, if the coordinators realize that people are paying attention to this, they will give that feedback to the doctors who will be forced to improve. Hopefully, they won't just make a video of themselves with better techniques but not practice it in reality. Not to be an a## but I think everyone should ask for a video of the operating procedure both inside the body, and outside in the larger room. Since it is so difficult to sue in Mexico - the only thing keeping doctors from cutting corners etc. is word of mouth and video evidence. They will know people can put the video on youtube where anyone can see what's up. That way surgeons are held accountable. The smart and business minded doctor would immediately start doing this so as to draw business his/her way since there seems to be an issue. I would be fine paying an extra 50 to have video of the entire room. It costs very little to set up a few cameras and hook them to a laptop.

    I'll just say it...

I am a band/sleeve revision patient and used to feel exactly as you said. Your thoughts are absolutely normal as far as I am concerned. I had to let the hate out and make the decision to have the revision, I am 3 months out now and have not looked back at all. I am not a fast loser, just the norm from what I read, I really, truly couldn't be happier about everything now. Honestly, make your decision, it will really help how yiu are feeling, and if you can find a Dr to do both in one, go for it. Some say you have to wait months in between, but I didn't and know of quite a few on here who did the same, all of us no problems

    I'm freaking out!

sounds like me. im so afraid also because i had a lap band then a lapband revision and then i had my band removed. im sure i have a lot of scar tissue from all these surgeries and that makes things so much more risky. i can totally relate to you. just keep praying!!! good luck

    Is surgical reversal "medically" necessary?

the individual has failed to achieve adequate weight loss, which is defined as failure to lose at least 50% of excess body weight That section in itself would say that you could revise to another procedure
  12. piercedqt78

    Had my band removed 3.12.14

I did the band out and revision the same day. I was more sore from the port removal than anything else. So the sleeve should be much easier than the band removal, at least I would think so. I had my band for almost 8 years, and I still have a nasty knot of scar tissue where my port was, my hubby calls it a phantom port. I'm hoping when I get my plastics done, they will remove the port scar, and the hard knot that is under it. Now that I'm at goal, it sticks out, and looks like a tumor.

    I'm freaking out!

I am having the same anxiety about revision. My son is only 4 months old and I am terrified something will happen and he won't have me, I won't get to see him grow up, etc. It's really giving me second thoughts on a daily basis. I keep trying to tell myself that I need to have this surgery, there are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Nothing so far in my entire obese life has worked for me and my quality of life sucks. I want to be able to run and play with him and not be tired and aching all the time. I have had to do 6 months of insurance crap again this time around because my insurance wouldn't pay or revision to sleeve fo port pain and no one had documented the trouble swallowing and vomiting. The psychiatrist just ok'd me for surgery which means I have 2 more appts with my family doctor and I'm set to go. Shouldn't I be more excited? I am scared of failure this time around. The sleeve didn't work for me and wasn't helpful, what makes me think this surgery will be?

    I'm freaking out!

I am scheduled for lap band to VSG revision surgery June 23rd and I'm a nervous wreck. I know I need this surgery without a doubt. I don't know if it's because I'm in the medical field and know way too much about what could go wrong or if it's the fact that I'm a revision and I know that the complication rates are higher for me. I keep thinking I have two children and what if something happens. Wouldn't that be selfish? I know it's selfish the way I'm living now too. I hardly do anything fun anymore because I deal with the aches and pain and fatigue that comes along with being morbidly obese. I have prayed and I know God will watch over me but I can't get the fear out of my mind as the surgery date nears. Are any of you guys with scheduled revisions feeling the same way as I do? I think I will be a complete mess come surgery date.

    Very confused!

I had the revision to the bypass cuz I wanted to lose more weight I had the sleeve two years ago and lost 80 pounds. But I still have more to lose. I've always had reflux since I was a teenager I take prescription meds and now since the bypass I take over the counter meds too. This is the worst I've ever had. I talked to my surgeon and they say it'll get better but it's not so far.

Not to confuse you, I had lap band removed last month and I'm waiting for revision surgery, sleeve I'm trying to find out all I can about it. @@PJO what about Vitamins? Do you take any? Any recommendation?
  17. I finally got the call today and am having surgery on April 17th! It is starting to get real now and my excitement is kicking in. I'm having my lap band out too. Starting my pre-op diet but less than two weeks away. Anyone else having revision from lap band to sleeve?

My band to sleeve story (so far!)

Welcome! I have a similar timeline to yours--banded 2007, had a baby in sept 2010. My band stopped working after I delivered--it was actually unclasped so it no longer worked. I am about 3 weeks post revision now. I had terrible reflux during my pregnancy too, but none after until a few months before my surgery. I don't have any at this point with the sleeve. But I would trust your surgeons opinion on this. You can certainly get another surgeon's opinion. But that is what you are hiring him for, his professional expertise, not just to give you a one size fits all solution. I have heard that sleeves can have more reflux problems and that RNY is essentially a cure for reflux. Good luck with your decision!

    Fear of failure

I had very similar issues with my band. Either too much resitriction or not enough, throwing up meals, reflux, heartburn, lost weight then regained it all. I am sick of it. I found out 2 weeks ago that my band has partially slipped. I am having a revision all in 1 shot on June 23 by Dr. Aceves in Mexico. I cannot wait to get this band out. I think it has to be a decision that you make for yourself. I am sure you will decide on what is best for you. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Best of luck to you.

    Fear of failure

It is a tough choice. It is hard enough to get the courage to have WLS and then to coontemplate a second surgery because the firs one failed is devastating. I got the sleeve as more of an insurance policy to keep me from balooning up after the band was removed. I decided to have it all done at once because I didn't want to go through ANOTHER surgery afterwards. This decision is personal and you will know what is best when you are ready. Personally, the sleeve was the best thing I could have done for myself. The recovery is hard, but there are great results and no more pain. It is understandable, though, if you want to have the band out and not replace it with anything. Keep reading the board and look for those of us that have had revisions. There is life after the lapband!!!! Good luck--

    Fear of failure

Desertmom, I too am thinking about the revision and the idea of a leak scares me, but I feel like for the most part after a few months the risk for that is gone. But, I don't think I can live with a lifetime of heartburn/reflux that I'm having with the band, so I understand what you're saying. I'm going to get the little bit of fill I have removed and see if that helps my heartburn/reflux, and I'll continue trying to make the decision. I'm afraid the Dr will suggest RNY so I don't have heartburn/reflux issues and it scares me, but I think I would do that before I would stay this size and gain more.

    Curious

Hi Marci, Just curious, are you actually having a revision to the sleeve, will your insurance cover it and if so, will you use the aurgeon who did your band? I hope you don't mind me asking but I sometimes think I should have opted for the sleeve initially but was concerned about the major cutting of the stomach. Thanks!
  23. Thank you for posting today! I'm having a revision on Thursday and I needed some positive reinforcement. I'm so nervous that I'm going to wake up and the doctor say that I had too much scar tissue and they couldn't do anything for me . I'm also nervous about this not working for me.
  24. Does anyone know what the self-pay amount looks like going with LapSF and/or Dr. Cirangle? I'm in the process of researching further into doctors, and am hoping someone might know. I previously had a band for a few years that leaked and then eroded, it was removed in March this year (2009) and I'm slowly gaining. I couldn't have a revision at the time from band to sleeve due to the problems with my stomach from the erosion, etc. Any thoughts you might have would be helpful. I've been to MX twice for surgery, so I'm not scared of it... but I must say, I would like to stay closer to home this time if at all possible. Thanks for your kind help, in advance. :lol0:
  25. From what I understand you can have the sleeve done at an mtf. But tricare does not cover the vsg at civilian providers. I am not sure about revisions though.
