    The 5:2 diet

You and the others on this site are all adults. Just know when the vets say something, or give advice, they are not doctors or nuts....but do have the unique perspective of living through some of the semi advanced stages of this process.. and when they say they don't think it is necessarily a good idea for sleevers who are only months out and still in the "honeymoon" stage to take on a somewhat experimental diet, without your Drs or nutritionists consent, they are speaking from some experience you might not have had yet. Just saying. We have also spoken out against people taking diet pills, drinking alcohol early out, and binging and purging. This 5:2 plan may be harmless and even beneficial, but the jury is still out. You will be living with your sleeve for a LONG time, and I recommend you take time, get to your goal or near goal, and if you are not at goal by a year or so, or are having a hard time maintaining using your hard learned skills, then jump in with the rest of us....IF we find it is so great that we are still doing it! Cheers and congratulations on getting the sleeve! My 2 cents.
  2. I think it's a disease. Alcoholism is classified as a disease. The only difference between an alcoholic and an obese person is their drug of choice- alcohol vs. food. Plus, like with many diseases, they have found numerous genetic and environmental links predisposing people towards obesity. As many of us can attest, it definitely runs in families too. I also believe it's an incurable disease. The tendency to be obese is always there, we just need/have treatments to help keep it under control. I happen to have two incurable diseases- MS and obesity. I give myself shots three nights a week to control the MS and I have the Lap Band to control the obesity. What's the difference? Just different tools to manage different diseases. Just my opinion.
  3. the goo from the tape took almost three weeks for me to get off. I used alcohol on occasion to wipe it to help remove it. I have noticed that the incision where they removed the lapband port is getting a bit of keloid scarring, so I have been rubbing lavender oil on it to help break it up. I have also read that a bit of castor oil will help break up scarring...but NOT to be used liberally
  4. Yeah - I know: You would rather read about alcohol. The questions: 1. My wife recently got us some diet soda stream concentrate to mix with Water. Are these same, better or worse then drinking water with a typical enhancer like Dasani, Mio, crystal light, etc. no aspartame in these and I am primarily thinking about the non soda flavors pink grape fruit or watermelon. We got them primarily to save on the cost of buying Dasani water enhancers all the time. 2. We picked up some Isopure RTD bottles last night. Awesome that they have 40 g 100% whey isolate. Would these make a good Meal Replacement option? I am wondering because of the optimal amount of Protein in them. My only concern is that they would leave you hungry as the liquid passes through you. I can see how these would work great post workout. It is funny; I am almost 1 year post op and I have never seen these before. I also picked up some Isopure powder to try post workout instead of usual amplified Wheybolic 60. First time using that product too. Thanks for your perspective on these two questions.

    Vacation advice 8 weeks out

I am going to Jamaica next week to celebrate my birthday with my girlfriends. I'm nervous about the trip. Should I take protein? Can I have a small Drink of alcohol... I'll be 8 weeks out... Please share your thoughts or experience!
  6. So I'm getting pretty nervous... Two things that are weighing heavy on my mind are loose skin and alcohol. I love having a good scotch or glass of wine. I don't drink everyday, so that's not a problem. It I hope I can still drink in moderation! Obviously I won't be crushing 12-18. Were while trolling for salmon all day, lol. Has anybody had their loose skin removed? How much does that cost?

    Alcoholic Beverages...

I've read that a single glass of wine nightly can be greatly beneficial. Anything more than that, while enjoyable at the time, makes me super tight and miserable for the next few days. Whenever I drink quite a bit I make sure to liberally take liquid ibuprofen the next day to help with the tightness that comes from the dehydrating effect that alcohol has on my body.

    Foods that make you poop...

COFFEE, berries, chia seeds (with lots of water) COFFEE, sugar alcohols (5 werther's originals sugar free does the trick for me) COFFEE and finally, I've been experiencing much more regularity since I started eating quest protein bars.. they won't fix constipation, but they help keep you from getting that way in the first place.. I think it's the 18 grams of fiber.. GO FIBER!

    What to tell nosy people?

I'm 4 years banded and only very few people know. When I had it done I told the nozzy people at work that I had a hernia and that was it. People would ask me if I had the band and I would tell them that our insurance did not cover. They agreed. ( maybe because they also tried) LOL!! Even my sisters and brother don't even know. This is a tool to help me lose weight so they don't need to be up in my business. But it is hard going out to work related events. I was known as being able to pound the booze without a problem. Now I take it easy as the band has also affected how much alcohol I can handle. Stick with one story and you should be good.

    Alcoholic Beverages...

I have also heard that it is wise not to drink for the first year after banding because most of us are food addicts and there is a chance we can transfer our food addiction to alcohol addiction. But dear God I love wine.

    I need a buddy

I'm happy you got your test results and your surgery date is secure, I was away for a few days for my husbands work, I had one bad food and alcohol day but right back on track the next day, I'm glad you stuck to your pre-op diet at your meeting, how are you doing today?
  12. Quick question, I was just banded a few days ago on Friday and this past Sunday, I went to Mass. I received Communion and took some Wine as well (tiny amount to help the host dissolve). I wonder if I should have done that so soon since I am obviously still on liquids. Do you think I could have hurt anything by doing this? I know I'm not supposed to have solids or alcohol. How soon did others start receiving Communion after surgery?
  13. My feeling is, only have a glass of wine once in awhile. Alcohol slows down weight loss, because our bodies don't recognize it as any kind of food source; it only stores it as fat. If you want to drink once or twice a week, be prepared that your weight loss may not go as quickly as you might like. ALL that being said, I hadn't had anything to drink for close to three months before Memorial Day. Then I went to a BBQ, and drank close to (if not) an entire bottle of wine. It was SO good!! Haven't had any since, but I allowed myself that day. If the metabolic issues of alcohol were different, I'd be drinking a hell of a lot more often! When I get closer to my goal weight, I'll probably indulge a bit more. And I WILL count it. Only problem is, drinking also spikes my appetite, and brings down my defenses toward eating
  14. I had a party to go to last sat the 15 th June and I was banded 5th June. I called my surgeon on 13th and asked him if I could drink alcohol. He said if I have had no indigestion I could drink non carbonated but if I had any discomfort, I should stop. I drank vodka with Fresh orange and ALOT of them! My stomach was fine and I'm back on track with the weight loss. A bit of a stupid risk but at least I called my surgeon first.

How many carbs a day are you consuming?

Carbs-fiber=netcarbs some people also subtract sugar alcohols.

    Surgery tomorrow!

I was going to type "I woke up this morning thinking..." But, no. I woke up this morning to a giant thunderstorm after two hours of sleep, angry at the world. I drove an hour to work in the driving rain and had to stop and scramble for doctor-approved protein shakes at the grocery store so I could eat ("eat") at work. When I got to work fifty loud teenagers were babbling in the breakfast hall, three people needed transportation, and so on. So it was only after I finally got to run back, sit in my office and turn on some ridiculous cheesy "meditation" piano music that I cleared my head and I thought: Today is the last day I have my whole, I-got-born-with-it stomach. And that's cool by me. Goodbye, 75% of my stomach. We've had some okay times, particularly downing way more alcohol than we ever should have in the 18-21 years and getting stuffed full of all kinds of delicious things that were probably mostly butter and sugar painted to look like something edible. I'd say it's been a good run, but actually, now wearing clothes bums me out and my leg joints hurt a lot. So I think it's time we part ways. Goodbye, regular stomach; I'm trading you in for a bionic model. Helloooo, staple line~

    Alcoholic Beverages...

My doctor told me alcohol would be absorbed into my system a lot faster after banded, so it might be best to start with careful moderation. I try to avoid the stuff, but there are social occasions when I do imbibe.

    Alcoholic Beverages...

My drinking days are Sundays. I preplan everything. I double my workouts, plan my meals and make sure I stay within my target calories intake. My drink of choice is a shot of a low cal vodka and Zero vitamin water. Blueberry Pomegranate is one of my favorites. My advice to you is to plan you day and do some research on your favorite alcoholic drinks and find a healthier alternative. Remember alcohol has empty calories. So choice wisely
  19. Hey Everyone! Questions here! I just turned 21 last August and I've been on a pretty strict plan on making better choices with what Alcohol I consume but I was wondering if there are any low calorie drink recipes you have? Or have you completely stopped intake of Alcohol all together? My sugery is in a few weeks and I'm willing to make any changes to be successful. I know nothing carbonated, of course but I know you could drink the calories away if I wasn't paying attention. What is everyones opinion? Thanks guys!

    Always Thinking about food!

Proud of you Laura! I know you were depressed about eating bad and then losing, but I want to mention that alcohol is a diuretic, so that may have contributed to weight loss after a night out. Or maybe you body finally took the hint that you want to be smaller! I'm happier with my two lb. bounce range. I don't feel like I will get as out of control with the snacking. Lynda
  21. I am having a bad day! Feeling very frustrated and like a failure. I will be 4 weeks post op tomorrow. For the past week, I keep gaining and losing the same 2 pounds. GRRR Then I took it a step further and drank alcohol last night! I only ordered one shot and sipped on it for about 2 hours. I got a little buzz from it and feel like total crap today! I keep feeling like I am never going to lose weight. I have failed at every diet I have ever tried (obviously, that is what led me to the sleeve) and I am staring to think I will fail at this too! Ugh! I hate feeling this way! Definitely one of those days I would like to stay under the covers and cry myself back to sleep! For some reason, I feel like I can't get my emotions together! Anyone else have these problems/feelings???
  22. Alcohol is a diuretic. That may explain it. Lynda
  23. Sugar alcohols will do it, and not in a good way. That being said, I have a confession to make. A few years back while I still was still working, I used to keep a jar of jelly Beans on my desk. This one man that worked in the office was not only a jerk but pretty much cleaned out my jar each week. I enjoyed people helping them selves but most people would take a few but this guy would take huge handfuls and put some in his shirt pocket for later.I let him know one time that he was welcome to bring in a bag every once in a while to fill the kitty. He looked at me and said "why would I do that when you will do it?" Wrong thing to say to me. Next day, I went and bought 3 bags of the sugarfree jelly belly beans. It says on the bag not to eat more than a few because of the of the high content of sugar alcohols in them. He was all over them by 9am. I made sure I got up and left my desk area when I saw him coming. The warning on the bag is true. That's all I'm saying. To add to my delight, I let him know after the fact that those were sugarfree. He never ate another one of my jellybeans.

    Foods that make you poop...

This seems unconventionally and I discovered it totally by mistake, but anything with sugar alcohols. Not ideal, and I never eat products with it anymore because it upsets my stomach. But "sugar free" chocolates are usually the biggest culprits. I eat 3 of them and within an hour it hits. They do have calories though and can be addicting because they taste like the real things, so only in case of emergencies!

    Daddy cant do it

Great story... gave me chills! Yes, you can do it! One word of caution though, the band will not help with the "head" hunger, that addiction is powerful and, unlike alcohol, cigarettes or drugs, since you can't give it up completely, you might want to look into some counseling! I'm a firm believer that a good counselor is worth their weight in gold!! And I look forward to reading your post a year from now after your next Disney trip!! I'm sure you and the kids will have a blast!
