    October 2022 surgery support

You're only a week out. You really should clear exercise with your surgeon. However, walking is usually a safe thing to do.

I hope everything is okay….it does get better for sure. Swallowing is tough the first two weeks. Crush everything. Pills are not tolerated well. I nearly ended up in the ER over ONE gelcap. Gas and diarrhea go with the territory but it is no fun - it’s not unusual to resort to poise pads or another heavy duty pad for poop accidents. Keep us posted.
  3. I understand your pain, im 6 days post op, and my period came on day 4 post op....I dreaded this but I wasn't due till the following week, but im pretty sure the lovenox brought it down early...but anywhere I've been baring the bullet right now, they did give me tramodol for pain but I havent needed it. And I'm an ibuprofen girl...try a heating pad.

    Vitamins & Supplements?

Here's what I take: Bariatric multivitamin with 45 mg iron B12 sublingual, 1000 micrograms Biotin, 10,000 micrograms D3, 5000 IU Iron bisglycinate, 36 mg Calcium citrate, 500 mg, 3x/day I take the multivitamin, B12, biotin, and D3 together. Calcium and iron are supposed to be at least 2 hours apart, and I also take thyroid medication that is supposed to be 4 hours apart from calcium and iron, so I take the thyroid medication first thing in the morning, multi/B12/biotin/D3 4 hours later, 1st calcium 2 hours later, iron bisglycinate 2 hours later, 2nd calcium 2 hours later, 3rd calcium 2 hours later. I use an app called Medisafe to track and remind me. It was a lot at first, but I'm used to it now and I have a routine. You may need to take chewable vitamins for a short period of time after your surgery (I was told to take chewables for the first 6 weeks, but you should follow your surgeon's instructions). I think the chewables taste terrible, so I switched to a capsule after the first 6 weeks. The BariatricPal One multivitamin is the best deal I've found if you get the annual subscription (but definitely buy a smaller quantity to try before you commit to buying a year's worth). I get the one with 45 mg of iron, but your iron needs may vary. Another thing to keep in mind about iron is that the most common forms (ferrous fumarate or sulfate) cause nausea for some people, especially when taken on an empty stomach, and can also cause constipation. There's another type of iron (iron bisglycinate) that doesn't cause nausea or constipation, but that's not what most multivitamins have, so you'd have to take it separately. I had low iron even before surgery, so I actually take both. I also highly recommend the BariatricPal calcium chews because they are delicious. They taste like candy and I actually look forward to taking them. French Vanilla Caramel and Belgian Chocolate Caramel are my favorites. You can often get them on sale for 20-25% off (I actually just restocked last week when they had 25% off all BariatricPal brand products). Make sure you get calcium citrate, not calcium carbonate. Most drug store calcium supplements are calcium carbonate, which is not absorbed well by bariatric surgery patients. I buy the other ones from Amazon. B12 (NatureMade) is cherry flavored, and biotin and D3 (Natrol) are strawberry. It doesn't feel like such a chore to take all these pills when they taste good.

    No weight loss

Keep doing what your doing. Are your clothes feeling different? Take pictures this will help see the change. I was at a 9 week stall. Then I dropped a significant amount of weight. Which will happen a time and again.

    Food log?

Closing the day just gives you an idea what you will weigh in 5 weeks if you eat the same amount of calories as that particular day. I recently started MyFitnessPal again, I like it very much. However, at the same time, I am still using the Fitday.com website since it has my monthly and yearly statistics, graphs, food and macros... Etc. of what I have eaten for more than a decade. I wish MyFitnessPal had monthly, 6 months and yearly averages. My diet is by monthly calorie average, not daily or weekly. Is there a way to see your monthly average calories in MyFitnessPal?

    Babies over 40?

Hi, friends! I am freezing my eggs now at age 40 and came across this post. I was hoping to resurrect the conversation. I have been deemed virtually infertile -- only 4 follicles in total (1 on my left ovary and 3 on m right). i'm on a high dose of FSH meds to try to stimulate follicle growth and the one ovary with only 1 follicle is doing nothing. the other 3 are growing along but slowly. my team said that having children over 40 + pcos since I was a teenager (in spite of completely normal periods now) + having a high bmi still (super happy to have a bmi of 39 instead of 59 but still not healthy!) is all working against me. they recommended losing weight as safely and as rapidly as possible while also doing subsequent cycles (since my insurance covers a few and i'm also up against my biological clock -- i'll be 41 in feb). any advice/tips/recommendations? anyone else been through this?

    Vitamins required or not?

its exactly that. Everyone is different. i slack on my vitamins mainly because i just forget lol. My blood work comes back fine except for a little low iron. I actually have another round of blood test coming up in 2 weeks for my 6 month follow up. shall see.
  9. How are you doing now that you are a few weeks out?

    Gastric bypass surgery

My specs are 5'3, 207 lbs which equates to a BMI of 36.7. Therefore going on a 4 week liquid diet will probably reduce my BMI ever more, just don't want to lose the ability to have the surgery.
  11. A Food B&A 3-for-1: yesterday’s dinner, today’s 1st and 2nd meals of the day Yesterday’s dinner: Congee, 192 calories, ate it all. Today’s first meal: Open faced Havarti-poached egg slider, 255 calories, ate half, Mr. ate other half! Today’s second meal: Cole Slaw mix with feta and avocado: 433 calories for the bowl. Ate most of it, and none of the avocado (looked off to me so decided against eating it). Gonna just take off the avocado, so adjusted log to 321 calories.
  12. Ok, so here is a different kind of Before and After. Been having Body Fat Percentage on the brain after a short discussion of it on the Food B&A thread. I’m 5’2”, 118.8 lbs this morning, down from 235 lbs 4 years ago. Picture on the left is me 2 years ago (Summer, 2020), when i was working out regularly and eating pretty low-carb. I was probably 115 (or less) at the time, body fat percentage 13-18%. Picture in the right is me today (118.8 lbs), wearing the same shirt and bra, but not the weight belt that i was wearing in the 2020 pic (which is why my waist looks tiny in that pic). Body fat estimated at 29%. I def do like better how my bod looked a couple years ago, but not soooo much that im willing to put in the effort to get back there, ha! So lesson(s) for the day are: 1. number on the scale is NOT the only factor that determines “health” or fitness level. 2. Sometimes u need to weigh a particular goal with the effort required to achieve/maintain it and decide if its for you. 3. Getting to and staying at a particular fitness level takes effort. Regular, and consistent, effort. I am in awe and admiration of those who can get and STAY fit. It’s hard, man!

    Vitamins & Supplements?

Wait. The Bariatric Fusion chewables are complete. You don't have to take the additional calcium citrate along with those. I don't understand why it's complete, because we're told that the iron prevents calcium from absorbing. So what I typed above about taking the additional calcium citrate wasn't correct. I got my routines mixed up. I was supposed to stay on chewables for three full months, but I only made it six weeks, then I just went with the one a day capsule. I never had an issue taking the capsule either. My surgery was so simple. I had no issues really.

    Food log?

Thanks for that helpful info! I haven't started w/ fitness yet on Baritastic since I am not cleared for exercise (other than walking, stationary bike, etc) until six weeks post-op, but it is great to know those features are helpful. An upgraded scale is next on my list; can you share what smart scale you use?
  17. My surgery date was 9/26 and my surgeon said not to take Vitamins until my post-op visit 3 weeks after surgery (this past Thursday). My surgeon recommended the fusion brand, but I am confused about the different types, some you have to take 4/day, others only once per day and then there are the calcium chews (two hours after iron). Is the Fusion 1x/day pill a complete Vitamin? I purchased the complete vitamin not realizing you need to take it 4x/day but would like to switch to the 1x/day version but just want to make sure it has the correct daily balance of vitamins, since 4x/day is just unreasonable and not workable into a work schedule and taking around Calcium pills which can't be taken within two hours of an Iron supplement and the gallstone pills (take 2x/day with food) and the reflux pills (take 1x/day before eating). I am wondering if the Fusion 1x/day vitamin is a complete vitamin and what other supplements does everyone take? In addition to the Fusion Multivitamin and 2x/day calcium citrate that we all take, I've been told (by friends) to take: B12 sublingual (when does one take this?) Fusion hair, Nails & Skin Vitamin D (50,000U/wk with vitamin K3) for skin Krill Oil collagen powder, Water soluble ADEK Vitamin (but the friend who told me this had a DS, which I did not have so I don't think I need this.) Does anyone take any of these supplements and what kind of daily multi-vitamins have worked best for you? Thanks!

    Serving Sizes

so i had my first meeting with my medical team. we talked about pain management, nutrition, fluid consumption, vitamins and exercise. so far everything is going very well I am able to consume all my shakes and vitamins in correct amounts. I brought up my concerns about amount amount that I'm consuming and they told me that it is ok. When i transition to soft food I should keep three meals and two snack through the day. keeping meals about 250-325 grams about a 1 cup to 1.25 cups. to eat slowly and keep drinking fluids all day.. separate food from liquid about 30min apart. weighing foods it a great way to keep amount within range. I am using an app to track my food and nutrition and I am consuming about 900-1000 cal per day and I could increase to max of 1200 to help with my feeling very tired. My body is still healing and being tired is part of it also. getting rest and napping is common for most people after a drastic surgery. at the end of our meeting I ended feeling very good about my progress and my team is proud with my results and look forward to our 3 month meeting where we will follow up with blood work.

You're doing great! I've heard to stay off the scale for at least 5 weeks. Your body is freaking out right now and trying to find stability. Your weight is going to be going crazy. I've heard that hunger often continues until you're on solid foods. Once you start solids, you'll start feeling restriction. This video might help with the portion sizes.
  21. Edited to add: sorry, am realizing this post should probably be put in a more appropriate thread. But im too lazy to move it, ha! ———————— Yep. so the first time i got my body fat measures via scan, it was 38%. But this was already 3+ months in, and 70 lbs lost. So i would guess I was probably 50-55% body fat pre-wls given my body measurements at the time. Yikes. After weight loss, at around 1.5 years post, dexa clocked me at 15% (at 115 lbs) My most recent one was Jan of this year and i was at 23% (at 118 lbs that day) My home body scale, while varying wildly day to day, generally reflected these numbers when taken as an average over the time period. Sooooo, if i can count on the averages of my home scale, as of this morning, I’ve averaged 29% body fat reading for the past 30 days. I am 118.8 this morning. Now i still think calling me skinny fat is a stretch since technically im still in the healthy body fat percentage for my stats, i am definitely much less fit than i was before (I’ve basically doubled my body fat percentage over past 2+ years.) With all that said (which was alot, sorry!), i am content enough with my appearance and lifestyle that i have little interest in doing anything drastic to change it. I’m just not very keen on other people unsolicitedly pointing out their precieved deficiencies of my body. But i mean, who does??? P.S. btw, there ARE physical benefits of a higher body fat percentage: my face is less gaunt and my boobs are bigger. Win!

Hi, I am new too. My ESG was on 10/7. But I was told NOT to weigh myself daily. It’s once a week, at a designated time / day, no cheating, no peeking at the presents before Christmas morning. It’s driving me batty from curiosity, but I am trying to comply because I understand the reasoning. So I am measuring my waist and upper arms obsessively instead, but it’s not the same. Also, 9-11 lbs in 12 days, heck yeah!!! Good job.

    Gastric bypass surgery

Four weeks is the longest liquid diet that I have heard of. I feel for you. I did 3 weeks but I did get certain vegetables to eat. Its to shrink your liver so the surgeon can operate easily

Don't feel discouraged. You're doing just fine. Fluctuating 2-even 5 lbs a day is normal at any weight. This has to do with water weight, food etc. It's best to weigh yourself first thing in the morning, before food or drink and most importantly only ONCE per week. You're still healing. This was a big surgery. But most of all, Youre on track! Have you ever lost 8 to 10 lbs in one week before this? be proud! If you obsess over the scale it will mess with your head. Do not compare any if your progress to other people, our journeys are different right down to our surgeon guidelines and food phases. For portion sizes, your body will tell you if youre pushing yourself too much. Start small and work your way up. Less is more right now, protein shakes are incredibly important to not lose muscle mass.

Some do more than 4 weeks some less. I needed to do it for two weeks. The time needed also depends on an number of factors. The surgeon may have requirement to do a certain amount of time due to a starting weight and or getting the patient to show commitment to the process. Their primary reason for anybody to do the diet is to shrink the liver so that makes the surgical field easier to access. Asking the surgeon their reasoning. Hope it all goes well for you.
