I feel like I'm cheating
bariatricmomof2 replied to Victoria Bontempi's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
My nutritionist and surgeon are on the same page as to what I should eat. I've lost 29 pounds in the 1st month. I just started on regular foods yesterday that consist of salads and such. My diet consists of almost the same thing as Airstream88. Except I can't have fruit but 3 times a week and to stay away from carbs until 6 months for the max amount of weight loss. I can have up to 50g of carbs a day. I barely eat that. I don't want them. I eat mainly Protein because it stays in your system longer and keeps you full longer as well. Carbs are a fake full. You have been given an option. You choose the option best for you. If your surgeon asks why you didn't do what he asked then let him know that him and the nustrionist needs to get on the same page. My surgeon didn't want me to have fruit at all. I honestly didn't care one way or the other. My NP said she went back and forth with him on this subject and they came to an agreement. Since I lost 22% of my weight in the 1st month she will allow me to have more fruit. Obviously if I was told I couldn't have fruit at all then I would want it. That gives me a choice. I hope this helps! HW 270 SW 253 CW 224 5'1" tall Sleeved 12/22/2016! -

3 weeks out from surgery and worried

Sam, he put a TINY in your band. Hold a rubber band in your hand and put it in your hair. It doesn't hold your hair in place. Now wrap it around your hair twice...it creates restriction. It takes time to find your sweet spot. The spot at which 2 or 3oz of food makes and keeps your full. I highly doubt your band has slipped. Good luck and nice weight loss! -
Hi Caterpillarfly, I'm also in Atlanta and am planning to get banded. I went to one of Dr. Hart's meetings over at John's Creek location. (Not True Results Weight Loss) The price for the Lap Band was $24,000!! So what I'm wondering is how the same Dr. can charge 9k less at a different facility? I can't find any information online about True Results Weight Loss in Atlanta other than the address. At Johns Creek it's done in the Hospital, Is the True Results Weight Loss place just an outpatient surgery? Right now I'm planning to go to Dr. Ortiz in TJ Mexico; it's $8,000 for everything except the airfare. Dr. Ortiz has an excellent reputation. I might consider doing it here....maybe. If you have any online info about the Atlanta office, do you mind posting it? Thanks and good luck! Jena

Aaaaarrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhhh! 2Lbs A Week?! Really?!
twoboysandagirl replied to DisappearingDivis's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
That is the recommended amount for any other weight loss program in the world. Remember dieting and wishing for 2 pounds a week...sorry it isnt more but it is going down and that is the goal....I am proud of you for all the changes you are making in your life. -
I know you must be so excited! I would like to know about the weight loss program you used, how much did you lose, did you exercise, etc. I am wondering how strict they are. I didn't start the process until March so it will Sept or Oct before I can qualify for the surgery. Thanks so much for your post. I have had my initial psychological testing and passed. I just don't want any surprises or disappointments at the last minute. I will be using surgeons in Atlanta. Keep me informed!

Thanks for keeping me updated. I am still investigating my options concerning hospitals and surgeons. I am still under doctors care for weight loss and therapy sessions. I have heard that Northside Hospital is the best in Atlanta. I should be making a committment by july or August. What town is your surgeon and hospital located in? Debbie

I have the same thing, it is like no one is noticing the weight loss. I have lost 20 lbs, and I know that on someone my size, that is like some back fat and not super noticeable, but it helps to have people notice and comment. Positive feedback is good. Good luck with everything. I too am working on hunger issues, but mine are all mental hunger.

I think the specific transfer to alcoholism is more common in surgeries like RnY and DS because they can get drunk VERY quickly with their rearranged anatomy...I'm SURE it happens with bandsters too, but there isn't quite as much physiologic incentive. I don't really know how I feel about the idea of food addiction itself, but I know that a lot of people are compulsive overeaters and they do have to deal with the root cause of that or they are at high risk of either continuing and not losing weight (totally possible with the band) or transferring addiction to something else. I am pretty compulsive about working out now, but I don't think it's really unhealthy, it doesn't interfere with the rest of my life. just the size of my butt, heh heh. I do love to shop, and that can be a problem since it is soooo gratifying to buy cute clothes in smaller sizes when you lose weight. I have to be very careful with that one and I try to only shop when I need something. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. That's great that you have a year of counselling preapproved! I don't think a lot of insurance companies have that much foresight. I'd definitely take advantage of that! The popular saying is that they put the band on your stomach, not your head...emotional eating and compulsive eating are NOT prevented by the band. But, the desire is diminished somewhat, and when you have weight loss happening, it reinforces your good behavior and helps you stay on track somewhat. Good luck. These are very good questions to be dealing with before you have surgery.

My name is Maren and I live in Alabama. I'm 34, with a high weight of 293 and a BMI of 47 (starting). I have BCBS and am in my third month of the 6 month supervised weight loss. My doc has me doing a controlled carb diet, mostly to get me in the mindset of putting protein first and carbs last for my post-surgery lifestyle and I'm down to 278 after only a few weeks of *really* trying. Believe me, I've done the calculations and know that to be safe in terms of insurance coverage, I shouldn't get below 260. I think I'll have to add back in a few carbs over the next few months and then once I'm approved, get back on track. That's sad, considering I've been morbidly obese for about a decade, but I'll play the games just like everyone else. For a long time I've thought casually about surgery, but I haven't gotten serious until recently. I actually don't have any major health concerns yet but I've had three miscarriages (no successful pregnancies) and even though there is no clear reason why weight would have anything to do with it, my OB specialist recommended I put off any more attempts until I lose weight. My doctor (primary) and my OB-GYN think I should do the full bypass because of my weight, but I have thought a lot about it and think I prefer the band. I'll hold off final decision until I talk with my surgeon, but in the meantime I'll be preparing for the LapBand procedure. I look forward to learning from you all and journeying with you. -Maren

First things first; congrats!! Before surgery you may want to go grocery shopping if your doctor has you on a certain pre-op or post-op diet. You will probably be put on liquids then soft foods before you can eat normal foods again. Look around the forum for some things to buy to get your through those phases. You may also want to look around for some post-op "band friendly" recipes. There are a lot out there; many of them are tasty! Buy some Gas-X strips to use post-op. Otherwise I'd just spend time looking on the forums, especially the post-op forum, to see what to expect. Pre-op may be helpful as well. As for weight-loss, it varies per person, so there is no number to really give you. Some people lose early on post-op, some don't. Keep in mind that the first 6 weeks are about healing; I can't stress that enough. It seems every day there is someone asking why they aren't losing when they are only 4 weeks post op, or 2 weeks post op. Your body needs to heal and for 6 weeks it will do so. During this time I'd advise staying off the scale and really focusing on allowing your body to heal. Take some before pictures and take your measurements! You'll be surprised how many inches you lose.

no insurance/lapband
Caterpillarfly replied to ericab3618's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
The website for True Results is Lap Band Surgery (Gastric Banding Weight Loss Surgery Experts) | True Results. You can view the location and contact information there, as well as schedule a consultation. It is an outpatient procedure, but it is performed at a hospital near the center. I don't know why the huge price difference! Let me know if you have any other questions! -
Thinking about Gastric sleeve revision
Marcella young posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
So I Had My Gastric Sleeve Done IN June Of 2013 I STARTED Out At 327 An Got Down To 244 AS Of March 2014. I was hitting many obstacles an had a injury at work which made it to were i couldn't work out. I had many stalls an no longer loose weight an actually started gaining an now up to 271. After talking to my husband i sometimes think i never got the sleeve done the reason being is comparing everything to his. I never had the dye test done an wasn't loosing weight good. I was pretty much starving myself an was hungry all the time an even now when i eat i can eat a normal meal like someone that hasn't had it done. I emailed the doctors office that performed it because i now want some type of proof it was done. If it was done i wanna no why he left my sleeve big enough for me to not be able to get great weight loss like others an why did i not have the dye test done or they never called me for follow ups. Has anyone had anything simular like this happen to them an reconsidering a revision? -
11 Days Post Op and not losing....HELP!!
Cindy C replied to NY Bandster's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes some of us have had amazing weight loss but it wasn't easy. It was a long difficult road. I literally and figuratively worked my ass off. You've lost 6 pounds in 11 days. During the same period, I lost about 15 but lets put that in perspective...I had a starting weight of 135 pounds more than you. I had so much more to lose. My 15 was about 4% of my total weight. Your 6 pounds is about 3% of your total weight. So really, you're doing very well. Just keep following the process, relax and enjoy the journey. It really is amazing! -

You look great. Can really see your weight loss. Congrats! -
1) I bought the unjury Medical Protein powder chicken broth & Flavored for shakes. I know the full scoop calls for 8 oz of Water or Milk but how much should I make (what will i be able to drink in one sitting) in the beginning (Phase 1 & 2?) I don't want to waste! 2) I am worried about hair loss ( I am already pretty thin) Should I get and start the Vitamin regimn that i get from the doctor and start it now? I am 3 weeks 5 days out. 3) My surgery is November 3rd. I know its crazy but Thanksgiving is always at my house and will be no different this year except Im not cooking my dad and sister in law will do the cooking! I will just start soft mussy foods on the 25th (2 days before thanksgiving) What are some suggestions on things i could "enjoy" Mashed potatoes (is a little gravy ok?) let me know what worked for you in the beginning. 4) Is a recliner chair necessary to sleep in after surgery or is the bed comfortable? Thank You in Advance

Pregnancy complications?
Browneyedgirl41 replied to christalyn89's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm so sorry about your losses. That's devastating. I have a friend who had gastric bypass surgery and had several children afterwards. In fact, it made fertility easier in her case (not being obese anymore). I don't think it's the surgery, but obviously I am not a doctor. I had my son before I had WLS (I didn't need it back then) and am done having babies so I have no personal experience to draw on. Sending baby dust your way! -

Slower To No Weight Loss :(
Janet53 replied to rizabonita's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sansmom, I am feeling a little better about my 6 week stall since reading your post. Did you do anything to get your weight loss moving? Or did the stall just end? I am feeling so depressed right now. Mainly because I have been exercising and eating 1200 calories or less and not seeing any results. My partner who weighs 112 cuts out some carbs and doesn't change anything else and loses weight! And she isn't even trying to lose weight! I used to think people who complained about these kinds of stalls were doing something wrong, eating too much and not knowing it, etc. but now that this has happened I realize this is real. My metabolism really has slowed down to nothing. I would survive really good if I were stranded somewhere without any food. Thanks a lot ancestors. And while we are at it, thanks a lot menopause! I should have listened to my older sister who told me when I was in my twenties to lose the weight then because it becomes impossible later. -
Your body will go through survival modes as your body is changing and from one type of diet to the next. I am going through the same thing for three days I didn't love anything and this morning 2 pounds gone. We need to remember weight loss is not just the numbers, but also the inches. We did not put this weight on in a month, so we have to allow it time to come off. If we keep following the rules it will happen. I was 218 in January and today I am 189.

Am I too "tight" ? .... 2nd fill yesterday
green replied to peaches9's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
The band is often at its very tightest first thing in the morning. Slowly sipping a warm drink - tea or coffee - will loosen it up and by dinner time it should be relatively easy to eat your small meal provided that you take small bites and chew, chew, chew. The fill folks often recommend that during the first 24 hours following a fill you go easy on the band by only having soups and other liquids. I note that you, like me, are a TLBC graduate. Congratulations on your fabulous weight loss. -
:) well....this site seems to be the best info and honest feedback I've found. Seeing the nutritionist for initial consult next Tues. Then it's a 5% weight loss, about 12 lbs, and then make appt for doc. Let's hope my endoscopy and prelim tests all go well. Wish me luck that this is the start of a new life for me☆

I think I may have given up....
juliansmom2003 replied to mom2girls's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Girl, I couldn't relate more to your post!!! It is going soooooooooooooo very slllllllloooowwww right now and I am starting to wonder "Is this it?" I follow the rules to a "t", exercise my butt off and no loss....I have a moment of weakness (a spoonful of FF ice cream or something like that) and STILL no loss, so it's the same no matter if I'm an angel or have a teeny tiny minute of insanity! I am hoping it's not my body telling me it's finished. You have done an amazing job, whether you lose another pound or not. You are 70 lbs down!!!! Yeah! What an achievement! I'd say the hardest part is behind you! I know how hard it can be on most days, but believe me, we're all pulling for you. We can keep each other motivated ! You've soooooo got this, girl!
