Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to rmarierenwick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery in November and just told people I was going to rent a house a few hours away with my family for two weeks. It was true, but I was also getting surgery as well. At first nobody commented on weight loss, probably because I had been dieting since July so it’s not like anything dramatically changed. Suddenly this last week I have had multiple comments per day from coworkers and i appreciate the sentiment but I work with hundreds of people and to be honest I’m getting tired of it. I just hit 100 lbs lost, but I have another 70 or so to go. I told my husband, and one coworker actually ran into me at the bariatric class so she knows. I just told one of my good friends a few days ago, because she’s overweight as well and if she’s interested in the surgery then I feel she deserves to know. Other than that, it’s my business and unless I’m very close to someone and I think they might benefit from knowing about the surgery, I’m not going to share it. -
Hit a Stall 8 weeks out
HealthyLifeStyle replied to JessicaLY's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
As with any weight loss program, there is always going to be a stall. I have had several of them. I am close to 6 months out. Just keep doing what you need to do. All of a sudden, you will start seeing results again. I know its hard not to get frustrated, but don't give up. You got this! -
Congratulations on ticking off another step & welcome. What surgery are you having? Dumping isn’t nearly as common with sleevers but it can happen when eating certain foods - often sugar. Usually though you learn to avoid those foods pretty quickly. While taking multi vitamins is very important during the weight loss stage, there are sleepers like me who don’t take them anymore. Regular blood tests show my levels are great as I get all my required vitamins & minerals from what I eat. Good luck on getting your surgery date.

I love that green dress on you @BayougirlMrsS & that meal looks delicious. Love fillet steak & scallops too yum! Daisy or cluster rings were popular in the Victorian era. They also used a lot of enamel so your ring may have English origins or been influenced by those designs. Love your sweater with your boots @HealthyLifeStyle & congrats on your weight loss - whoo hoo. Hope your sister has recovered fully. Looking good @GreenTealael. I think your arms look fine too. I keep my elbows close against my body too @WishMeSmaller. What the eye can’t see... 😁

Endoscopy gastroplasty sleeve
Hop_Scotch replied to nuttyha's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Some people have had good weight loss, others not. In general the average weight loss with ESG is lower than the surgical options because the stomach reduction is not as great as the surgical options. https://www.mayoclinic.org/tests-procedures/endoscopic-sleeve-gastroplasty/about/pac-20393958#:~:text=When combined with lifestyle modification,at 12 to 24 months. -
Anyone had the endoscopic sleeve, please advise on the weight loss

Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
Stacyopolis replied to rmarierenwick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
This is a great idea. Addresses leave and weight loss and, special diet in coming months. I whole heartedly agree with your last few sentences!!! -
Please follow your dietary instructions. If you eat foods that are not allowed especially in the early stages you could end up with a gastric leak and would be in much worse condition and pain. I personally could not have a regular diet until 2 months post surgery. 2 weeks liquids, 4 weeks pureed, 2 weeks very soft (had to be able to cut with a fork) and then regular. I am in the first week of regular and still am careful and want to chew well with small bites. My doctor allowed me to have sugar free lifesaver mints to suck on occasionally. I have a big sweet tooth and that is what got me into being obese so the further I avoid candy and sweets the better. I had this discussion with my mandatory psychology visits before I even had surgery. Maybe you need to revisit this information if you had this expectation prior to surgery. Try to hang in there and remember why you started this method of weight loss. Revisit any information you were given pre and post surgery. This time will pass and I found the first 2 weeks hard due to the drinks (I was really sick of them but choose success vs. cheating)

I agree that it really does get better. Just keep "sipping" because fluids are very important. For me ice cold was best and it took me at least 2 weeks before tea and decaf coffee. I was very lucky as I have a high pain tolerance so I did not notice any abdominal pain but did have the shoulder strap discomfort especially on the left side. The best advice is to follow the directions from your doctor/dietician and eat as they direct you. I had a very hard time with the protein drink brand that our Weight loss center promotes but now find that any made by Pure Protein are best for me to tolerate. Even while I experienced severe nausea after surgery for 2 days post surgery and had to stay an extra day, I had no regrets because I want a healthier life and to feel normal instead of being obese. The mental game in your head is hard at times. Best of luck.

VSG to RNY still have GERD
lynmcg replied to Tracyringo's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision on Dec 14th. At first I thought it had definitely worked but the past few weeks the reflux is back with a vengeance. I’m at a loss as to why it’s still happening too. 🙄 -
Newbie here, I’m getting sleeved on the 22nd of March at a BMI of 35.1 Ive had so many people tell me I’m not “that” fat but I’m sorry, 35.1 is severely obese (even though I may not look “that fat”) and as a doctor I know the risks that come with excess weight. I also know the research around weight loss and that this is my best shot of losing the weight and maintaining it long term. I have tried every diet known to man, been to see countless dietitians, have tried all the medications, I exercise like crazy and all I’ve managed is to stall the weight gain. My hubby and I want to start a family next year and I want to give myself the best opportunity for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby- which means I need a healthy weight. I feel my weight is impacting on my chronic migraines and my asthma, and I’m really hoping that losing the weight and feeling better about myself will be that last thing I need to finally fully recover from years of severe treatment resistant depression. So yes, many reasons why I am choosing to have a sleeve at a “low” BMI. Mostly I just want to be healthy! Thanks for reading...

Hi all! Just needed a little encouragement. I just got denied (first time) for my VGS because I gained eight pounds during my three-month supervised weight loss. The reason I gained weight is that I was a "lightweight" at 205/5'2 and my nutritionist told me not to lose too much weight or I might be denied. Eight pounds isn't a big deal, I know, and they said I just need to come in and weigh when I have lost that. So now I think I'm going to try to practice the liquid liver-shrinking diet I'll need to do pre-surgery to drop those pounds. It's day one and only breakfast and I am starving, lol. Any tips or tricks to get yourself through the liquid diet? TIA.

Yet another stall & gaining
Jaelzion replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
When my weight loss slowed quite a bit, I was advised to add strength training. Not as a way to burn calories but because adding muscle tissue raises your BMR (the base rate of calories needed to keep your bodily functions going). I am NOT the athletic type so weight training was new for me. The pandemic hit right around then so I ordered a set of dumbbells from Amazon and found a very basic, easy, beginner's routine on YouTube that I could do consistently. It's a 15 minute whole body routine and it's not too strenuous. My weight started dropping again almost immediately. And it kept dropping until I was below goal. The investment of 15 minutes, three times a week, has paid off enormously. -
Yet another stall & gaining
Arabesque replied to LAJ23's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
First, you need to take the pressure off yourself. Stalls happen. They’re normal. It’s not because of something you’ve done nor is it being done to you. It’s just part of the process. Stressing only makes everything worse. Secondly, you’ve achieved so much so far. Don’t give up over a natural pause in your weight loss. My last stall at about 6 months lasted almost 3 weeks & I was 1kg off my goal. So near yet so far. I just stuck to my plan like I had with other stalls. I knew it would end & it did. I lost that kg (& a few more). Also remember, as you get closer to your goal your weight loss slows. You’ve been putting your body through a lot. It needs time to come to terms with the changes just like you do. You’re providing it with different fuel sources than it’s used to. Hormones, etc. are being released into your body from the fat you’re losing increasing things like your cholesterol & oestrogen levels, etc. which can affect weight loss & gain. My liver function even went crazy for a while. You may have reached a point of equilibrium between your food intake & energy output & have put yourself in maintenance. And this may seem silly but are your scales in the same spot? I pull my scales out every day & try to put them in the same spot using tile lines as a guide. If I put it in a slightly different spot I can weigh up to a pound more or less. Have a chat with your medical team. They will have some suggestions to get you through this. Please don’t give up. -
I stopped exercising after a couple of months (I was walking on my treadmill) because of my low energy & low blood pressure. The day I almost fell off due to being so tired & light headed I decided enough. It’s true. Exercise contributes very little to actual weight loss. But it does contribute to your general health. It also increases your appetite to compensate for the calories you’ve burnt. I still don’t exercise but try to be active in other ways. Dash up & down the stairs in my house. Park further away from where I’m going. Walk at a pace around shopping centres etc. Take stairs when possible. Walk to the local shops. It all helps.

Returning to work and how to deal with questioning coworkers...?
Circus321 replied to GMS1213's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I totally get what you’re saying. Personally I’d tell them that I found out I had a hormone problem that was prohibiting weight loss so I took steps to fix it and now the healthy diet and exercise routine that I’ve been doing for years is finally helping me lose weight. It’s not a lie, wls does correct hormonal imbalances that prevent us from losing weight and if you’ve already been eating healthy then your diet won’t have changed much (except smaller portions of course). Just a suggestion. I’m sorry they’re like that. It’s awful when people project their own insecurities onto others -
Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
goalsmasher replied to rmarierenwick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Same. I had my surgery in October. I told 4 people close to me because I didn't want to be known to the rest of the world as the girl that had the weight loss surgery. A friend that had the surgery said that she felt that way and wished she hadn't shared it with others. I'm a pretty private person, so her comments stuck with me. As I've been losing weight and people ask what I'm doing, I just tell them I'm doing keto. The bariatric diet is high in protein and low in carbs, so the diet they see me eating reflects that. Also, I don't feel like I'm lying because I am basically doing keto. Everyone has their own path- just do what's best for you! -
How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?
Guest replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your loss is truly impressive. -
Like you, I did almost no exercise in the first six months. As I've said here before, exercise isn't a major factor in weight loss. You are clearly losing enough weight without exercise, so you don't necessarily need to change your routine during the weight loss phase. I'm two years out and am just starting an exercise routine to build strength and stamina, not to lose weight. That's something you might want to think about down the line, but as long as your weight loss is on track, you don't need to worry.

How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?
Tim C posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I would love to hear from some folks about your weight loss after surgery the first 60 or 90 days after your sleeve surgery. I need inspiration. I am on this liquid diet and surgery in 6 days! -
I think that while exercising contributes to weight loss, it is also an important part of a healthy lifestyle. I would introduce some cardio and weight lifting just for the health benefits. Good luck!

Some of us eat a ton of grains and carbs for maintenance. LOL. I do. I eat a lot of plant protein. I don't eat refined carbs much anymore...no sugar or white flour in my normal diet. But I do eat oats, potatoes, beans, chickpeas on a daily basis. Some people do really well with a keto approach to weight loss, some are more like me. You'll find lots of both in the weight loss surgery crowd:) Like most things in life....one size fits all....is pretty much a falsehood. Whichever road you take, wishing you terrific success and great health:)

There's a risk you'd fall back to old ways even if you do have it. Lot of folks gain all their weight back...surgery or no surgery. I hate to say this, but it's a truth that no one brings up and it really should be brought up....weight loss surgery is no guarantee for success. It helps. But the real work is in your head. They fix your stomach...not your brain. And your brain is very sneaky. LOL. That said....statistically, odds for longterm weightloss are MUCH BETTER with the surgery. I think your health comorbidities would be improved with the surgery, for sure. Wishing you the best.
