May 28-31st Sleeve Week!
WhoKnows replied to lylabelle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well, after being cut on the 28th, I'm home now! I was discharged yesterday and I feel pretty good. Incisions still suck, but I'm able to get in all my liquids and I can do purees. I'm getting way sick of Protein drinks though; some other people mentioned being fed up with sweet stuff, and I hear that! All I want is something savory. My last day in the hospital they gave me mashed potatoes and it was truly awesome. Of course, that's not the sort of thing I'll be making for myself at home, but it was nice! And @@hrhlaurie, you're not the only one who didn't get a leak test. My surgeon said he does the one while before they stitch you up, but doesn't do a swallow test because of the two leaks he's ever seen, one happened too soon to be caught by the test and the other happened too late, so he just doesn't see the point. Fair enough I guess. I mean, I wouldn't have minded doing one, but I trust his judgement, and since I'm feeling so good (relatively speaking), I think I'll know if something is wrong. I also had my first BM today (yay for bathroom talk!). It was teeny tiny, which doesn't surprise me, since I've eaten probably less than 1/4 cup of actual food since Tuesday. But today all I want is something savory and not made from instant powders like at the hospital! So, I'm gonna make some black bean Soup and puree it, then mix in some pumpkin seed protein, and instead of sour cream I'll do a dollop of quark (something common here in Germany that is sort of like Greek Yogurt, and tend to be eaten on potatoes; also very high in protein and low in fat). My surgeon said for now I can eat about three tablespoons at once, so I'll just freeze the rest in ice cube trays, and I should be set for food for a while, even if I half the recipe. I'm gonna save a bundle on food! -
March 2013 Post Op "A New Life 2013"
cranialmalady replied to ElleG's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can get it in fine most days. I average between 55 and 60 grams a day, but that's literally eating nothing extra. The Dannon light and fit Greek yogurts are like 12 grams so I have one of those a day. I eat a lot of tofu and protein pudding also. I don't know when I'll be able to try some veggies or fruit. I think I could tolerate it fine, but I get full pretty easily. My doc says to always eat protein first and no snacking between meals so I only eat 3 times a day. -
Amylou, We're on the same schedule! I started my 10-day pre-op liquid diet yesterday, too! I had a hard day today . . . headache all day long, semi-nauseous, and HUNGRY. However, I am following the diet to the letter and know I will make it. The key for me was to find Protein shakes that I liked. I bought Optimum Nutrition 100% whey Gold Standard powder in Extreme Milk chocolate, and also in vanilla. I've mixed it into Cream of Rice, Soup, and have had some pretty tasty and filling smoothies (with Greek yogurt). Hang in there -- it's gotta get easier!

No but I just had a very ripe fresh peach blended with SF peach yogurt. That was heaven. Banana would be good to. -
June 2014 Sleevers Check In!

oh thanks so much. I spent my day relaxing watching tv and had a nap as well. Since in cake this year ( and to be honest I did miss it) I am treating myself to nonfat, sugar free frozen yogurt. Happy birthday to your daughter. -
Update: Not featured: yogurt, chicken & chocolate chip cookies a friend made for me. (More tea, hot chocolate, coffee & water) The Cookies: they were not protein variety lol so *technically* I'm still on plan, but it's more about me not being a DB when visiting people who go out of their way with hospitality. I'll survive if I have a cookie, especially after walking 2 miles to see them.

3 days post op troubles
BarefootDrummer replied to Miss.Bunny447's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It is amazing how much the different plans vary. I was on a "high Protein low/no sugar liquid diet" for 2 weeks prior to surgery and 2+ weeks after. I was allowed to have no sugar added Greek yogurt as a "liquid" though. At almost 2.5 weeks on my post op followup, the doc just gave me the ok to start the pureed foods and scrambled egg is included in that. I ate it for the first time on Friday night and apparently overate and got sick too. I thought it was going down well, but when I got the full signal, it was actually an overfull signal. I'm learning. Like others have stated, the egg is probably too much at this stage. Also, I couldn't get hardly anything down for that first week. I think the stomach was quite swollen inside. I threw up from one bit of pudding. At one week post op, it seemed like it magically changed and I was suddenly able to get all my protein and liquid in that day. So give it a little more time and take care of that newly altered stomach of yours. Also in the hospital, the one nurse made me sit the bed up a bit and then wrote in big letters on my board that the bed had to be no lower than a 30 degree incline. She stressed it. (No one else mentioned it.) But at home, I propped pillows up, like you mentioned and it definitely helped. 2.5 weeks post op, I'm flat again. But don't lay down right after eating OR drinking. Like someone else mentioned, my doctor requires all meds be crushed or split (into nerd candy size pieces) for several months. I chop them up and put them in a bite of pudding and they go down well. You might want to try that. I bet your stomach is fighting to try to dissolve them. Good luck, dear. Hang in there. It gets easier. I'm not too many days ahead of you, but it does get easier. It all is a learning process though. BTW, today I ate another egg and stopped in time and didn't get sick. Yay! LOL. -

Pre-op Gastric Sleeve Surgery Preparation - Grocery List
luv-a-bull replied to enixon2010's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My heating pad...not really a grocery item but it is a life saver! Also the jello and yogurt I loved prep I can not stand postop. Cream of wheat with a little butter and Splenda....yum! -
I would ask if they make the sauce (if not ask if they will tell you the calories listed on the container). If they do make it ask whether it's made with low fat yogurt. Full fat Greek Yogurt has has much fat calories as ice cream. Trader Joe's was giving samples of their full fat French vanilla Greek yogurt. I said to myself this tastes like melted ice cream. Well when I read the container it had the same calories! Also often the meat in the Gyros are a mixture of ground up meats. May not really be that healthy. Most Greek places will have chicken Kabobs, I would probably say that would be a MUCH better option.

My dr told me my main source of protein for the first two weeks should be skim milk and Greek yogurt (because it's high in protein). They never mentioned protein shakes. I can barely keep those down (I'm on day 4 post op). I guess every dr is different! -

As for the fruit I would get fresh fruit, and then if you need to cook it...cook peaches in some water with a bit of splenda. Then when it's soft, coll in the fridge then put in the blender and make a peach puree. Strawberries I think can be just pureed fresh. I would get pineapple in it's own juice, strain the juice and even rinse the pineapple in water to get off the sweet juice and then puree it. I am on my own pre-op since I was told to just lose 12 lbs. before surgery. Eating one small meal a day and having protein shakes for lunch and breakfast. A small Fit and Trim Low carb and no sugar yogurt for a snack in the afternoon. -
i'm 18 years old, & i'm a senior in high school. i was banded on Tuesday the 5th, home Wednesday the 6th, and i returned to school Monday the 11th. honestly, i felt worse at home than i did when i was around other people. it also helped me to focus on other things besides my hunger. you should be able to return to school within a week, i don't see why that would be any problem as long as you recover quickly enough. you're young, so you should be good. as for Protein shakes, yes i have one or two a day depending on how much protein i had gotten for that day. [typically, a Protein shake, a yogurt, and a milk at lunch will fulfill my protein requirement] my mom makes the shakes for me, but we use jillian michaels [that mean ass trainer from the biggest loser] whey protein. i prefer the vanilla to the chocolate. to that we use milk instead of Water, so you get even MORE protein in one shot, and we also add a little bit of pudding [it really really helps the flavor] and in the mornings, i get half a banana. i am driving. i have no problem driving at all. at first it was a bit difficult, but that only lasted the very first time i got behind the wheel. i'm serious when i tell you that i feel just like i did before the surgery, probably better. it IS going to be hard though not being able to eat. when my family is making dinner its so hard. because you WANT to eat the food, but you can't because your stomach needs to heal and it is so frustrating. i would suggest getting yoplait for when you're on the yogurt stage because they have such a variety of flavor that you really don't get bored. my favorite is cinnamon roll and it is delicious. i get the dessert flavors because it tastes more like a meal then lol. feel free to ask any questions! i'm more than happy to answer.

If You've Had Duodenal Switch Surgery Share...
Postop replied to Elisabethsew's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Yes, And the dietician working with the bmi. They tod me it was probably because I wasn't getting enough copper which I've increased my intake of. I just meant that it's been my biggest struggle, the falling I mean. The protein they told me would probably get better over time. Interesting. I take a lot of copper because I need a lot of zinc (which I poop out). So the copper balances the zinc. I hope they're keeping a close watch on your copper via your blood work. Perhaps you'd consider using a cane until things go back to normal. You don't want to be falling. As for the protein, they're probably right. I drank 1 shake per day for the first 2 years as I couldn't eat enough. Have your tried other things than meat to supplement your protein: chicken, yogurt, fish, cheese, nuts, etc.? -
Where the May sleevers i just got my date!
ontoanewlife replied to Luvlvnlyfe5's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can totally relate. I'm 8 days post-op today and have struggled with variety. My MD told me that during the 2 weeks of full liquids you can have anything that you could potentially drink through a straw (but you don't use a straw). So I have made: smoothies with 4 strawberries, 1/2 a banana, 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1/4 cup Greek yogurt and 1 choc premiere shake or just by itself without the premier shake. I have made cream of chicken soup. I have had cream of rice mixed to a thin mixture with Trader Joes strawberry smoothie. I'm sure you could also try other cream soups as well. I eat a couple of popsicles a day. I personally don't eat the sugar free ones because they have Aspartame and the calories are not that different if you ask me. Trader Joes has a fabulous Red Pepper soup and other soups such as butternut squash and carrot. Just some ideas. Hope it helps. Good luck. I'm also looking forward to pureed foods so I can have even more variety. -
Did you cheat on pre-op liquid diet
yella1 replied to crystalcml's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I am currently on day 3 of my pre-op liquid diet and have cheated everyday. I Do really well during the day and horrible at night. Today I did a little better and only ate a few pretzels. I think I must just be weak. Tomorrow is my birthday and I want to do really well so I don't feel like a loser. My surgeon only wants me to lose 5lbs and that shouldn't be that hard right! Wrong I could lose 5lbs eating chicken & tuna. I can drink 6 to 7 slimfast a day, sf jello, skim milk, sf ff pudding, no sugar added non fat yogurt, broth, sf popsicles, tomato or veggie juice, unsweetened diluted juice, low fat cream soup, crystal lite and so on. I am able to have alot but I'm craving meat and sugar I hope my cravings and weakness do prevent me from doing what I have to do and drink the liquids. I have to be able to do this! 7 days to go! Surgery March 30th @ 6am! -
Did you cheat on pre-op liquid diet
Donnainva replied to crystalcml's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I've got 12 days till surgery and am following the diet very closely. Mine is Slim Fast twice a day and a protein with veggies for dinner. Some veggies or a low fat yogurt during the day also I bought some very low fat wheat crackers (something to bite into) and some low fat ranch dressing--do dip a small amount of my protein of choice into and I had two crackers today. Not hungry but I'm sure as hell not full or even satiated at all. I'm really looking forward to the surgery, this is just another step I have to walk I suppose :tongue2: -
HELP Liquid Diet!!!!!!
goldngrll replied to kelhough's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi! I was banded on July 1st, and have lost about 100 lbs so far....hang in there, YOU CAN DO THIS!! more importantly..you NEED TO DO THIS...the pre op liquid diet is to shrink your liver, and make your surgery safer..the post op is to let your body heal...seriously...it aint pretty, but you need to do this...birighter days are coming! so... I do basically 2 shakes...(still) I like the EAS shakes..great Protein, low carb, you can get them at bjs... now I get the choc. ones, but I really like the strawberry.. I also do te EAS Protein powder... so for the choc ones, I use a shake a scoop of powder, a half banana, and a scoop of pbutter...(yum) I also do a berry variation a scoop of vanilla powder, a splash of v8 splash, some frozen berries, and a few scoops of greek yogurt, or an eas shake...you can mix it up by changing the flavors, but make sure to keep it hi protein..it will keep you fuller longer..... I would do this again in a heartbeat...it aint perfect, but its the best option out there! -
Try the following, but be warned that for the first two months lots of stuff you'll like later will still taste like a$$. Chike (from Chike Nutrition) whey Gourmet chocolate and PB Protein Hot Chocolate from Nashua Nutrition or Healthwise or HealthSmart Max Protein (some GNCs carry it, but not mine) FAGE Total 0% Fat greek yogurt (needs sweetener) Syntrax nectar (various fruit flavors)

I agree with Susie, Sula. If you are having extreme reflux, and you tried everything to cure it. Like, not eating 3 hours prior to bed time, etc, I would go in and have a slight unfill. It is so WEIRD about the band being so darn fickle. I was scheduled for a fill in December but I canceled, and just when I think I need a fill, I get tight again. I made an egg white omlet this morning, and took 2 bites and realized I was having a hard time with it, so I switched to yogurt, and I had to slow down while eating the yogurt. Normally I can eat anything in the mornings, but his morning, my band is being a little fickle. I'm usually tight only 2 days out of the week, the rest of the time I am normal. I'm not real lose, but looser than I would want to be. I had a little reflux on Friday night, but haven't had any since. I know its good that your losing weight, but you don't want to jeapordize your health. So, if you have tried not eating before bed (I have to wait 3 hours), then I would go see the doc. A slight unfill of even .1 cc can make a difference.

No week long liquid diet lol they have me on two shakes a day right now with one meal . A week before I start all liquid diet exciting . She's like if you get super hunger during liquid just have a Greek yogurt lol well gee that will do it . I actually just found out that I have a high school reunion august so I'll be in high gear for two months as well! -
I can't tell you how gratefull I am to see the information you are sharing. I got my first fill on the 12th. That afternoon, I had 3 sips of broth and thought I was dying. slime, PB, and blood! :omg: It seems that the manipulation to get to the port to do the fill caused aggitation. The next day, I stayed on yogurt and protien drinks. The third day, I was able to eat chicken and salad. All was right with the world!:nervous NaturalBeauty, you are right on and completely AWSOME :clap2: . Just like you said, MY BAND IS FICKLE TOO:devious ! Up until a moment ago, I thought there was something wrong with me. One day, I do fine and the next day with the same exact food, here comes the slime and PB. I spoke to a group yesturday about fattism in America and thought to myself, if only others knew what we are going through. The despiration, changes, the complications, the hardships, and the successes. I'm down 30 lbs from my pre-op weight of 246 (little upset that there was no loss this week). I'm with you DrewsLou et al., 18/20 is now baggy but not quite enough to go to 16. Can't wait!!!! I was a size 16 one day 17 years ago! My goals to complete by September; go Horseback riding (can I come with y'all?!) and be enrolled in Ballroom Dancing! Here is another item to think about. Even though we are just beginning this new type of road, since losing some weight, have you noticed more people around you are actually making eye contact with you and saying HI? I think I'm experiencing it. Or maybe it's just in my mind.:paranoid

Unfortunately, nothing sweet is a problem for me. Only problem is sometimes I eat something cold like frozen yogurt too early in the day and it tightened the band....makes it contract. Maybe that's why you're bringing it up. Happened to me today for the first time. As for visiting home- I just did the same and I'll tell you what I think. You (and I) did not lose the weight for anyone back home. We did it for ourselves and the only extension might be our spouses. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks and anyone who doesn't tell you that you look amazing....can go straight to...."gehenom"! You may find that after a while of hearing nothing but how much you've changed and how great you look, that you get a little annoyed- I did. It was like, enough, already. But that was from friends. I have a mother who is German Jewish, and kind words generally come with a zinger- so if you have that kind of relative, or if there are those who might be jealous, etc...you're just gonna have to blow them off. I have a GOOD friend, who told me how amazing I look.....and I should really now invest in better bras! What the %#&@&? I told her that I know she means well (I'm not really so sure by the way) but please, if you have a compliment give it and leave it at that. My mother is the best at taking a compliment away, but I take it from her and just forget it, but I won't with anyone else. No left-handed compliments- I told my friend if she doesn't have something nice to say, say nothing at all. That my honest advise for you. Have a great trip and stick with those who really care about and "see" the real you.
