    June 2022 surgery buddies

I think everyone adjusts differently. I’m now off the puree diet and onto the sort diet and feel like I’m eating lots of potato and cheese. It’s weird because usually this would be foods I would avoid on diets. I get between 600-800 calories a day with the help of baby Bells (high in protein), a protein shake and a protein yoghurt. I’m meant to be working to 50gs of protein for dinner but am finding a meal difficult because it’s always protein first and that means I don’t get to the greens and veg. I’ve been quite active, swimming 3 times a week, 40-60 lengths a time so my nutritionist said I can eat more to ensure I have energy. I’ve just come out of the slump 5th week slump, and am loosing again which means it’s gone from water weight to burning actual fat which is great. I was a bit worried about the pause in weight loss. is anyone else struggling to get to eating lots of greens and salads? So over eating yoghurts, smoothies and high protein cheese with potato. I want to feel like it’s a healthier plate. Can anyone eat a salad yet? My op was on the 9th of June

    Stall broken!

So after 2 weeks of not having my scale budge, this morning I was down a pound and a half! I finally got past 259! Going to really try to stay off the scale until Friday but it's a relief to finally have the scale move. And somehow I thought I was in week 3 of a stall but when I looked at the calendar I was actually in week 2... it just felt much longer. So relieved to have the scale move... I mean, my brain knew it would but my heart had doubts. Of I go! TTYL! Melly Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

Hi! 👋 Welcome to the forums and yeah stalls suck, but it's a part of the process. Trust the process and stay on your plan. This too shall pass.

    weight loss tracker journal

I've been using My Fitness Pal (free version) for many years and it works great. I track everything I eat, and also my weight every morning so I get a nice chart showing my progress. I also use it to take a picture of myself in the mirror once a week and you can do comparisons of how you look now compared to the past side-by-side.

    Mini-cheat 5 days post op

It's not the end of the world but take it seriously - if you couldn't follow the rules by day 5, what's going to happen by day 50? Or 500? After I was sleeved in 2016 I did extremely well at first, I followed the plan to a T, I never cheated, and I dropped 120 lbs in about 6 months or so. Then I figured I could splurge a little here and there, have a few bites of a snack, because what's the big deal, right? It ended up turning into a vicious cycle where I ate more and more crap and eventually I regained almost all of the weight I had lost and was absolutely miserable and depressed and feeling like a complete and utter failure. I got the revision to bypass in Nov 2021 and am down nearly 100 pounds, following the rules and doing everything I'm supposed to, and always keeping in mind what happened last time. Don't beat yourself up too bad but if you feel guilty - GOOD! Use that and remember it when you have cravings in the future. Remember this isn't a magic bullet, it's a tool, and it's up to you how you use it. You haven't failed because of one mistake, but you might fail if you let it become two mistakes, then three, and so on.
  7. Hello Alicia, I am so sorry you are in pain! Have you reached out to your surgical team? I did not have pain after mine just abdominal swelling and am doing really well and am 3 months post op. Mine was also way more invasive than just the wrap. I will say you have to be careful at first when you are chewing etc because yes when you are healing you swell inwards. And things may feel “stuck” on the wrap . I was on liquids for 3 weeks after. You are still fresh post op. Definitely give yourself some space and grace it does take time to heal . Usually most swelling is gone by 6 weeks. If you need to take your pain meds take them. I will say the spasm thing is normal and will go away in time

Soft food sooner than two weeks?

I wouldn't rush it because your tummy is healing and bad juju can happen. I mean you could get lucky and not have any consequences but that will only encourage you to take more risks. In my honest opinion the slower you go the better. My plan had me on 2 weeks full liquid, then 3 weeks pureed, and finally on soft now. Never realized just how good scrambled eggs were until I had to wait to have them. As they say, it's your journey but going slow now will pay off in your future. Give yourself your best chance to succeed. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

I’m 5 weeks post op from RNY, and I can’t imagine getting to 600 a day. 800 is not even in the realm of possibility as far as I’m concerned.. I’ve decided I’m not going to be worried or concerned about it. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Ugly, boring, and weak

I know lots of people who manage to maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight without making it the only thing in their lives, and I envy them deeply! I am afraid that if I take my eye off the prize, it is a terrifyingly fast road back to 300+ pounds. We've all seen people who have gone through this surgery only to gain back all the weight they lost, and I can't even handle the thought of that. There actually are things that I would like to do if I could find the time to do them, but by the time I subtract my job and exercise and meal prep and sleep and the bare minimum housework I need to do out of the number of hours in a week, I never seem to have any time left.

Good Luck! I'm on week 5 post op and I already feel a difference. I'm moving easier, breathing easier and much to my husband's delight, snoring less. [emoji1787] You can do this! Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Pre op diet weight loss

i think i lost like 15lb or so. 2 week pre op diet... It was rough the first 3-4 days but after that you start to get use to it and it becomes a little easier. fatigue no big issues, Hunger was a big issue. I kept myself busy to not think about food.

    Ugly, boring, and weak

Thanks for the reply... It's nice to hear from someone who understands. My blood pressure never got as low as yours (at its lowest, a few months after my surgery, it was about 80/50; now it's more like 110/70), but my resting heart rate was in the high 30s. Any time I went to a doctor, the nurses taking my vitals thought there was something wrong with the machine and had to check my pulse manually. Now I have a pacemaker that kicks in if my heart rate goes below 60 bpm. I wonder if this is a common thing with fat people. I always felt like I had to work twice as hard as anyone else just to prove I wasn't stupid and lazy as people would assume because I was fat. When I got serious about my health and stopped working 20ish extra hours per week, I felt like a failure because I couldn't keep up with what people had come to expect from me. I felt like I was slacking because I was only working 40-50 hours/week. Ironically, when I was doing badly at my job for the first time in my life, I finally got a promotion at another branch of my company, and they had to hire two people to replace me at my old job. I, too, feel a bit angry when I realize how much they took advantage of me, expecting me to do two jobs for the salary of one. I just wish I didn't have to choose between my weight and the rest of my life. I envy people who have never had to struggle with their weight and don't have to devote their lives to it. I want to have my cake and eat it too!

    Surgery postponed

Did you follow the pre op liquid diet properly? Some surgeons only want three or four days, but most want two weeks to ensure the liquid diet. it is designed to shrink the liver for surgery and very important it is followed. If you cheat on it, it is a sign you are not a good candidate for surgery.

    Introducing Myself- I'm new

Hello and welcome. Stalls can be tough but you are correct that this one probably won’t be your last. If you can stay away from the scale it’s a lot less stressful. I shouldn’t talk though cause I couldn’t do it.

stalls typically last 1-3 weeks, so you're likely near the end of it.

    August Surgery Buddies!

Congratulations on your upcoming surgery! It sounds like you’re prepared and have a wonderful support system. I had a gastric sleeve done 18 months ago but am now getting ready to have a revision (gastric bypass) on August 8th due to severe GERD. I wish I would have just had the bypass instead! Going through the two weeks of liquid diet can be tough but just keep your eyes on the prize! Swanson sipping bone broth is great to have on hand before and after surgery since it has a lot of protein. Remember to sip, sip, sip your water constantly after your surgery and get your bariatric vitamins ready (I take Barimelts.) I’ve rewatched a LOT of YouTube videos in preparation for my surgery; they’re very helpful and motivating. I know you’re going to do well! Be sure to keep us all updated! Best wishes!😁
  18. For a while after my surgery, I over-shopped for groceries because I hadn't yet gotten used to eating so little. Even in my liquid/pureed/soft food stages, I bought way more yogurt, applesauce, etc. than I needed because I wasn't really thinking about how I was only eating half a container at a time. Plus, I was living in a "food desert" without easy access to a grocery store, so I was in the habit of stocking up when I went to the store. Eventually, I got a much better handle on how much food to buy, and I now live somewhere that I can get grocery pickup or delivery, so I order online and I use the same basic list every week (adding or subtracting as needed). I have also gotten really into healthy cooking. I've found tons of great, healthy recipes on Pinterest. Since I live alone and eat fairly small portions, every time I cook a meal, it makes 8-20 servings, and I freeze the leftovers (Souper Cubes are the best thing since sliced bread, BTW). I have had to hold back from cooking because my freezer is already packed with single-serving meals. I have a whole list of other recipes that I really want to try, but not until I use up some of my existing meals! My biggest weakness is Built Bars. They keep releasing new limited-edition flavors, and every time they do, I HAVE to buy a box! I even track my Built Bar inventory on a spreadsheet. I keep telling myself I'm not going to buy any more, but every time I get below 300, they release another new flavor.
  19. I had RNY in 1990 and regained all I lost. I always blamed myself but now know that the surgery failed due to a fistula between pouch and stomach. I didn't know that revision was even possible until 2020, just before the pandemic struck. I started the bariatric program in early 2021. I discovered that I am a food addict with trigger foods: sugar, wheat flour, rice, white potatoes, and processed food. I cut out those foods and the result was fantastic! I lost 70 lbs prior to surgery. Despite this success, I went ahead with laparoscopic revision surgery on 12/21/21 at age 73. I weighed 247 at the time of surgery, down from 317. Unfortunately, I fell in that very tiny group of bariatric surgical patients that develop serious complications. Ten days after my revision surgery, I was airlifted back to the hospital with peritonitis and sepsis, caused by a rupture of the jejunum below the anastomosis. I was hospitalized for 7 weeks and underwent three endoscopic procedures and two open surgeries before they finally found and corrected a residual abscess. I left the hospital with a 15-cm long open surgical wound, which took 8 more weeks to fully close. I am now fully recovered and am back to exercising daily. The endoscopic procedures stretched the new anastomosis so I have no more restriction than I had pre-surgery, so I still have to be very careful about what I consume. I typically go through month-long stalls and then drop a few pounds. I do lose inches during the stalls. I've dropped from size 32/4X to size 20/XL and now weigh 214 lbs., just past the 100 lb loss mark. After being on a restricted diet for over 16 months I struggle with near-irresistible cravings in the afternoon and evenings. The clinic wants me to limit intake to 800 calories. 😱 It is daunting because I know I will never be able to go on a "maintenance" diet and must continue to avoid my trigger foods forever. Even when I choose protein snacks in response to cravings, each snack adds 100 or more calories to the daily total so my daily calorie count is between 900-1200 calories. (I will gain weight at 1500 calories.) I've done a trial of weight loss drug CONTRAVE but had to discontinue due to side effects. This is a horror story, but don't let it dissuade you from your revision. Complications are extremely rare.

    Surgery day questions--Assistance please.

How long it took your doctor to complete your surgery? About 2 hours. I had a routine RNY. How long was your hospital stay? I stayed for 3 days. How was your doctor's bedside manner? My doctor and his PA were great. They answered all my questions. What can I expect when I get to the hospital before surgery? I arrive at 7:15am for a 9:30am surgery. Get there when your surgeon says NOT when the hospital tells you. If I had listened to the hospital I would've missed my surgery completely! The put 2 iv's in me, 1 in each hand, different sizes. Just in case one blew out. I saw my surgeon, anesthesiologist, and the nurse that would be in the operating room. Once I was taken back to pre-op it all happened very quickly. What was your biggest struggle at the hospital and at home? Realizing my limits. This is MAJOR SURGERY! Give your body grace and allow it time to heal. When did you go back to work? A little over 4 weeks post-op If there was one thing that you could have changed, what would it be? Nothing. I'm content with how things have gone so far. What did you pack to take to the hospital? I packed an extra long phone charging cord, toiletries, book, some crosswords, I downloaded some movies to my phone in case the wifi wasn't dependable. I wore loose clothing and crocs to the hospital, wore the hospital gown at the hospital(in case i bled or got sick- better their gown then my clothes), and wore the same clothes to come home. I found that between sleeping, walking(they were pretty clear they wanted me up as fast and as often as I felt capable) and drinking slowly the TV in the room was extra enough. Oh and chapstick! That will really help with any dry mouth! Eye drops will help if your eyes get irritated easily. I think that's everything. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Needing help

I'm in week 5 and still have no hunger/food cravings. I have an am schedule that involves eating first and lunch/dinner are usually based on how long ago the previous meal was OR if I start feeling icky and realize I lost track of time and haven't had any intake in 4-6 hours depending on my activity. This usually happens with dinner on my days off if I don't cook. I do enjoy looking at the different ways to fix the food I used to eat in healthier ways. August Surgery Buddies!

My RNY surgery is scheduled for August 1. I start my 2 week liquid diet tomorrow (July 18). I have all my supplies for the next 2 weeks and the first week or so after surgery. Getting that sorted and clearing out a shelf in the kitchen for all that stuff made me feel more prepared and slightly more in control. I’m excited and a little nervous. I’ve been working through the pre-surgery required appointments since last Sept. My surgery is about 2 hours away from home. So my family (spouse and 2 kids - both younger than 8 ) are going up the night before. We have a hotel for them to stay in for a couple of days before I get discharged from the hospital. They have been super supportive which I am grateful for.

    Introducing Myself- I'm new

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on your successes to date. I have the secret to never seeing a stall. Get rid of the scale. You don't need it to succeed. Look what it did to your emotions, the pain, angst, and frustration of a stupid number. Without the scale you will never be tempted to 'change things up' to get the number to move. Good luck, Tek

    Sore shoulder?

After being constipated for about a week I was put on ducolax by my doctor. He doesn't care for miralax, feels it's too harsh on the new pouch. I take the ducolax twice a day. Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Straws

Now that I think about it (I'm 5 weeks out) I drank from a straw when my daughter brought me home a baby Smoothie from her job. It was habit, I did it without thinking and had no ill effects. I do avoid them because I get air build up easily. Side note: how do you add you surgery info onto your profile? Sent from my SM-F926U using BariatricPal mobile app
