Day 20 Post-Op & New to the group
MyGrammyLife replied to MyGrammyLife's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you all for your input. It’s comforting to know you’re not alone! I heard a great analogy today regarding weight loss surgery... ”You can choose to ride the wave til it ends.....OR, you can open your sail and keep on going!” Im going to choose to open my sail (my mind) to new lifestyle changes and just keep on going! Best wishes to all! -
Hi there! I'm new here, but am super excited to have found an online forum to participate in while I go on this journey. I am (hopefully) going to be getting gastric bypass at MUSC in the coming months. I'll be self-pay (dang insurance exclusions) so slightly less hoops to jump through, but I have not yet met with the surgeon or anything. My initial consult is March 1st. I kind of wanted to share what my "breaking point" was that ultimately resulted in the call to schedule a consult, and maybe see if other people would share theirs in the hopes that I am not alone. Be warned that it may be TMI for some people, and is definitely not something I have shared with anyone in my social circle (they are not as big as me and would likely be not only disgusted, but not understand). A little background on me, I've basically been obese since right after high school, so around 17 years now. The range of how obese has varied but steadily climbed upwards until my heaviest of 273 (I'm 5'4"). I've done every diet under the sun, including some really really unhealthy ones (HCG anyone?). I've got high blood pressure, problems with my skin constantly being flushed, signs of pre-diabetes, aches and pains from minimal daily activities.. a lot of the same stuff I suspect a lot of people here have had too. You'd think that the health issues would have been enough, and you'd be mostly right. They were enough for me to look into weight loss surgery, but not enough alone for me to actually take the plunge. I kept putting that off. No, to finally make the call it took me having trouble wiping my own butt after pooping. Maybe it's cause I'm just not that flexible, but it sure felt like all the accumulated fat on my arms, side, butt, and back were getting in the way of actually reaching. That was my breaking point. Sitting on a toilet, straining to try and get myself clean and realizing I couldn't. Now, I did eventually manage with a quick shower of my lower half and some creative use of a towel to dry off/make sure there wasn't anything the water didn't get, but I still can't shake the feeling of being unclean every time I have to use the bathroom. Lord knows I am not asking my husband to come wipe poo from my butt. Am I alone in the struggle? What thing, or things, made you finally decide this was what you needed after you'd been maybe putting it off?

I wore the same size jeans (26) through 110 pounds of weight loss (I have to admit they were a bit too small at my highest weight -- I had to wear them around the house for a few hours to re-stretch them every time I washed them -- but I couldn't stand to go up another size). I had to wear a belt to hold them up toward the end of that, but I had the same frustration that I had lost so much weight but was pretty much the same size. After that, though, I started to blow through sizes really quickly. Now I'm wearing size 14 and I need a belt.

Day 20 Post-Op & New to the group

Welcome! Don't worry about other people losing faster, I was kind of a slow loser too but the good thing is, my weight loss kept going and going. It took almost two years to reach goal but I got there! Just be patient and stick with your plan. Sorry, no insight on the heartburn issue because I've never experienced it. But I know a lot of sleevers have, so I'm sure someone will come along who can address that. -

Are you really skinny or are you just normal now? Skinny kind of implies underweight or at least at the low end of normal weight. If your BMI is 24 as your profile says, you are perfectly normal. He might perceive you as skinny because of the relative difference in your size, but you really just reached a normal, healthy weight. Maybe ask him if there's anything in particular he would like to see you in? Like something you couldn't/wouldn't wear before but you can now? Either in public or in private (like lingerie and stuff)? Maybe if you can show him there's a payoff for him as well from your weight loss, and show him you care what he thinks, he'll calm down and be less insecure. Just a thought. -
Rice, Pasta, Bread, etc
summerset replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
There is no gold standard (even though some might claim that they've found the holy grail). IMO that's one of the reasons patients are so afraid of "doing something wrong". In the end there are patients adopting elements from several plans, creating the most restrictive plan possible because they only look at what other treatment teams label as "forbidden" and not what they label as "ok". One team says "NO!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!" when it comes to coffee - there goes the coffee, even if your own team says it's ok in moderation. Others say "NO!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!" to carbonated drinks - there goes the carbonated water, even though your own treatment team doesn't mind it. Just for - you know - safety reasons. A team says "NO!!!! NEVER AGAIN!!!" when it comes to bread - you plan to never touch a slice of bread again, even though your own dietician says you can start eating whole grain breads 6 weeks after surgery, just to be... safe because there is this talk about lack of weight loss because "carbs". And that list goes on and on and ON endlessly. In the end you've become the prisoner of your new "bariatric lifestyle". -
As noted, it can be very individual, but my gut feel from being around these places for years is that it high for the majority of people. I was probably touching that sometimes at that point, but I was losing 10 lb per month consistently and within 10 lb of my goal weight, so I was trying to ramp up my consumption to slow my loss and ease into maintenance (and I have a guy's metabolism, which tends to let us get away with more.) How is your weight loss going? How close to goal are you? Do you have any idea how much you were consuming before surgery when your weight was stable (i.e. what was your total metabolism)? For many people, 1500 calories, give or take a bit, will be their maintenance level. In short, your current loss rate and how far you are to goal should be the major determining factors. Also, be aware that typically, our loss rate tends to decrease over time as our total metabolism tends to decline as we lose weight (it simply takes fewer calories to move 200 lb around than 200, and fewer still to move 150 lb, etc., so it is usually best to avoid increasing our intake over time until we are ready to stop losing. Good luck,

Hello everyone! I’m glad to be a part of this group and look forward to sharing and hearing about everyone’s journey, whether it’s contemplating weight loss surgery, newly post op like myself, or those with years of experience. I feel there is value in learning from everyone. so for me, I have struggled my whole life with my weight. I have been up....and I’ve been down, but for me the weight always finds it’s way back to me. I know everyone has their own personal reason for having this procedure. My reason is more than just to lose weight. I have very significant spinal degeneration and have already had three spinal fusions on my low to middle back. Every surgery I am left with more debilitating symptoms. My hope is that with the gastric sleeve as my tool, I can lose the weight and actually keep it of. Less stress on my spine may buy me time until I need another spinal surgery. My journey has been a long one, but I hung in there! Lol I began my 6 months of managed weight loss on December 18, 2019. I only had one month left until I would qualify for surgery, but my back surgery in March of 2020 left me unable to return to work. I lost my job AND my insurance. Luckily I was able to get on my husbands insurance fairly quick, but because I skipped a month of weight management appointments I had to start the whole process over again! Needless to say, it was a long road to travel, but on February 1st (surgery day) I was down 60 lbs! My starting weight was 275, so I went into surgery at 215lbs. Here I am today at day 20 and for the most part things are going well. I am down another 13 lbs and starting my second week on puréed diet Monday. My biggest issue so far is heartburn!! I was already taking Omeprazole 40mg but the reflux is persistent! My bariatric nurse advised me it’s ok to take 1 tums and that has helped some. Has anyone else had persistent heartburn post op, and did it go away after a while? So far that is my biggest concern. By the way, I didn’t mention my goal weight is 150, so I now have 52 lbs to go. I see many of you are losing lots of weight very quickly. I sometimes feel like my surgery wasn’t as effective, but I try to remind myself that it may be slower for me. well, that’s my story! I look forward to hearing from others as I continue my journey! Thank you!

It's not "one size fits all". Discuss this with your nutritionist or doctor. Factors that effect the number of calories you should consume: your weight loss goals, your height, frame size, gender and activity level.

So I often chat with Mr. about the goings-on on this forum. Especially since i'm on here like ALL. THE. TIME. (yep, I'm a BP addict), and given Pandemic In The Wintertime, it is one of my main sources of non-family contact/socialization these days! Anyhoo, I brought this particular thread up with him last night/this morning and asked if he had any concerns or objections to my current wardrobe. He is a very easy-going and chill kind of guy so this never occurred to me that it would even be an issue, nor did he ever bring it up or show any indication of it being so. And he was all, "why would it bother me?" He pointed out that since the weight loss, I've been dressing more like I was when we first started dating almost 25 years ago, with the confidence to match. And that it was a good thing (I ❤️ my Mr.). He also said that during the years I was "unhealthy" (aside: he never says "fat" or "obese" or "big" to me), I was dressing more like my mother, which was not as good a thing, LOLOLOLOLzzzz, and that I would often say I hate my clothes, I have nothing to wear, avoid being in pictures, and be generally annoyed. So yeah, why would it bother him? So long story short, having a happy/confident/at-peace spouse is a win all around, and if it takes a stripper outfit to do it, then so be it. P.S. at the same time, the non-stripper spouse my feel threatened/scared/insecure but this is a relationship issue, not a weight loss/choice of dress issue. P.P.S. Of course, it doesn't have to be a stripper outfit! LOL, a head-to-toe wrap, or a suit of armour is just as good, so long as the FEELS are there. ❤️ -

I am almost eight months PO. I have tried pretty much everything I ate pre-WLS. I do not dump, but some things sit better than others, and something that sits well today, might not sit well tomorrow. More than a a small portion of bread or pasta tends to feel like a lump in my tummy. I do not like to forbid myself certain foods, but I do pick my battles. For instance, last Friday I went out to dinner. Instead of eating the bread put on the table, I had wine (I have a glass of wine or two once every other week or so). Since we can’t drink while we eat, I chose to drink first, rather than eat the warm bread. My fish entree came with three ravioli. I ate one and took the others home with 2/3 of my fish. I am not a big rice person, so I have only had a few bites since surgery, with no issue. I am trying to slow my weight loss down now, as I am happy with the way my body looks. I was happily stalled for about two weeks and thought I hit maintenance, but I have dropped 4 pounds this week. I exercise a lot, so I am not super restrictive with what I eat. My goal is to lose a bit more fat, not weight. Like Summerset, I do not chose to be insanely limiting with carbs, but most of my carbs come from fruit, rather than grains. I think it just depends on your current weight loss/maintenance goals, and trial and error. Good luck! ps. IMO = in my opinion -
almost everyone has their first major stall within the first month or so after surgery. It typically lasts 1-3 weeks. As long as you're sticking to your program, the stall will break and you'll be on your way again. You're likely to hit several of these stalls on your journey. Stay off the scale for a few days if you need to - but rest assured that as long as you're doing what you're supposed to be doing, the weight loss will start up again.

Keeping surgery a secret? What did you tell others?
Pilot my best self replied to rmarierenwick's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I think it stems from the same bias I had . That weight loss is simply about discipline with diet and exercise. But it was only recently I began to believe something more is at play, explained by some good doctors who actually understand and expressed compassion instead of making me feel shame. Like others here, I don’t want my decision to be a topic of conversation, or to be defined by it. But I also agree with the comment that at some point, I hope, I will be so happy with my decision that I will not care about anyone who might judge how I did it. (Love this site BTW. - love hearing everyone’s own thoughts and ideas ). -
how many calorie daily is enough to maintain weight lass when you move to soft diet
Jaelzion replied to punte's topic in Food and Nutrition
No worries, it can take a while to start seeing the loss because you're still swollen and retaining water inside. It's too soon for the number on the scale to mean a whole lot. Stick with it, the pounds will start coming off! -
How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?
Allienyc replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thank you for sharing. I had the sleeve on 1/15 and I am 27 pounds down, but that’s including the pre-op diet I started 1/1. I also feel like my loss is on the slower side, so you are not alone. My surgeon and nutritionist seem to think it’s ok. I started out with a BMI under 40, and I have heard that sometimes you lose slower if you have ‘less’ to lose. Not sure how true that is. Either way, the important thing is that the weight is coming off! As opposed to if we had not made any changes, it would have be the same old story, or maybe we would have even gained a few pounds! Keep up the good work everyone, and don’t stop! -
I'm Freezing
Circus321 replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This is very common with rapid weight loss, it means that your body is in starvation mode and trying to conserve energy any way possible. This is actually very common to experience with eating disorders as well, especially anorexia -
you'll hit stalls every once in awhile throughout your journey. They're a normal part of weight loss. They usually last 1-3 weeks. Just stick to your plan, and they'll eventually break. And 39 lbs in 53 days sounds pretty normal. I think that's more than I lost the first 53 days.

Rice, Pasta, Bread, etc
summerset replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
Basically, yes. With rice you simply have to cook it in enough water, same with e. g. oats. Pasta, I'm more a fan of bean pasta, but I ate and eat "regular" e. g. at restaurants. Breads, no problem (started with crisp breads though). Sugary stuff I have to be careful because there could be dumping, but yes, I eat simple sugars. Some people shun carbohydrate rich foods because they think they "make/made them fat" or that they "slow down weight loss". I'm not one of them. I believe in CICO, not in low-carb or keto magic. Eat less than your TDEE and you're going to lose weight. But what about "the insulin"? Protein rich foods cause release of insulin from the pancreas' cells as well. Look for "insulin index" on a search engine about this one. Beef, fish and cheese cause more of an insulin spike than pasta. So much for this. -
Rice, Pasta, Bread, etc
summerset replied to HealthyLifeStyle's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
What's their reasoning for this? How can pasta, rice and bread stretch your pouch but not other foods? I smell bullcrap. I ate all kinds of carbs during weight loss phase. But that's me. Everyone's different. -
How much weight did you lose the first 90 days ?
kunkelgw replied to Tim C's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I lost 35 prior to surgery and am 9 weeks post surgery and am down another 26. I weigh myself everyday but keep my eye focused on my Monday weights. I am exercising daily and noticed I am slowing down but average about 500 calories (regular foods now) but 60 g of protein and 60+ ounces of water. I did not gain all of this in a day so even a weekly loss of 2 pounds is a win for me. -

First of all, 39 pounds in less than 2 months is fantastic! Secondly, stalls are very, very common. Almost everybody experiences a few stalls along the way. It's basically just your body catching up with all the changes you're making. There's a lot of superstition around how to break a stall, but the truth is that all you can really do is stick with your plan and be patient, and you will start losing weight again. Stalls can sometimes last a few weeks, so don't worry if it takes a while longer for the weight loss to restart. You're doing great!
