  1. I’m preparing for revision all surgery in the next couple months. I’m concerned about how much I can lose. I originally lost 112 with the sleeve and have gained back about 55-60 (I’m afraid to look). I have heard things like the sleeve portion of the surgery (which I have already had) helps you lose the weight and the rest of the surgery (malabsorption part) helps you keep it off. Wanted to see if there were any people here that have done this revision that can give me the skinny on how much I will lose. ANY advise on what I’m getting myself into is appreciated. All my research points to go but real life experience is always appreciated!
  2. I was just sleeved on April 18th, my starting weight was 237 pounds in October 2010, my weight before starting the liquid diet was 221.00, and 207 the day of surgery. I am now at 199 as of this morning. I was excited to see the ONE!

    Help with Aftercare

The gastric bypass procedure is a type of bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery designed to reduce your food intake if you have tried and failed to lose weight through diet and exercise. Gastric bypass can greatly improve the quality of life not only because of an improvement in appearance and an increase in mobility, but also because it can reduce the number and severity of health problems that overweight people are prone to suffer, such as diabetes and heart/circulation problems. Increasingly, the surgery is covered by gastric bypass insurance from both public and private insurers. It is a complex procedure performed under general anesthesia — you sleep through it. Time in surgery is approximately one to four hours, followed by a one- to seven-day stay in the hospital. Currently, two techniques are available for gastric bypass: 1.) Roux-en-Y-gastric bypass (traditional and laparoscopic) 2.) Biliopancreatic diversion bypass Gastric bypass recovery and aftercare After gastric bypass surgery, many patients spend two to three days in the hospital, or one to two days for the laparoscopic procedure. On average, most people require two to five weeks of recovery before returning to normal activities. For a number of days your abdomen will be swollen and sore, and you'll likely feel discomfort. Your doctor can prescribe medications to help you manage the discomfort. All the techniques leave a permanent scar, but normally scarring is covered by clothing. Aftercare treatments typically include a dietary plan, regular exercise, behavioral-modification therapy, and Vitamin supplements. Your weight loss surgeon or plastic surgeon might require the use of a dietician, an exercise program, and possibly a psychologist for an extended period of time to assist you in your recovery. Plastic surgery after massive weight loss may be necessary to remove excess skin and fat and create a more shapely body profile. Panniculectomy and body lift are common post-bariatric procedures. I hope it will be useful to you.

    Help with Aftercare

I found the isopure to be purely nasty....some love it, I couldn't even hide it in juice or crystal light I found the taste so repulsive HW 312, pre-op (lap-band) 294, pre-op (RNY) 255, surgery date 2/11/13, goal weight 154, current weight 220.2

    Aetna frustrations!

Aetna wants you to either loss or maintain your weight. So just say if u started at 300lbs and you lose weight at every appointment and you do gain as long as you dont go over 300lbs. You can not go over the weight you were at your first weigh in. Does this help??
  6. Weight loss often happens in steps down, rather than a continual slope. If I'm constipated that also slows down the weight loss, so keep up your fluids and moving around. It's very common to hit a plateaus around this time. It will pass. I didn't lose anything from 3 to 7 weeks post surgery but now I'm losing 10 lb per month pretty steadily.

    Extra small stomach

i had a lot of vomiting until just the last 2 months. Even a Vitamin pill on a small meal could make me heave. (Sleeved 1//15) The first 7 months I ate very small meals all day, maybe up to 5 and a snack or two. AND Syntax fuzzy navel Protein drink saved me, still does. I have one as soon as I get up and one just before I go to bed. However after the honeymoon phase (8 or so months post-op) and I was able to eat more I had to watch it. At my last checkup I was concerned that my stomach had stretched a little. Doc said it my have needed to stretch cuz of a small tummy but to be careful not to stretch it any more. So now I do the 4 small meals and a snack. If I eat too much now (AND THAT MIGHT BE JUST ONE BITE!) I vomit. Best wishes and congrats on the great weight loss. Enjoy the restriction while you have it.

I'm 58 And My Boobs Are Really Sagging.....help!

Just had to respond to this...I am 34 and never had big boobs...but at their biggest (breast feeding and heaviest weight) I was a 40 B. I have NOTHING left after losing over 100 pounds. But what I have is saggy...so I dont think it has anything to do with the age of the boobs I am starting to think that some ladies just have fatty boobs and since I dont have much fat= I have NO boobs. I have found some awesome padded bras that allow me to look like I have small round boobs but i look like a cancer patient or an adolesent in a bathing suit. I have seriously been looking at suits with serious pads. Not sure if I will ever get them "fixed" but my least favortie thing about my body now.

    Possible band issues

My pain was not located specifically at the port necessarily. My erosion wasn't at the port either. Mine was my actual band that had eroded my stomach. This caused a major infection. The pain was the infection. To be honest I couldn't really distinguish other than to say it hurt very much in my abdomen and it came in fast. I ended up having my band removed via an emergency surgery the day after I went to the ER. Just FYI in case it's useful, I was banded in Sept 2010. My start weight was 330. Lost 130lbs in approx 10 months. I remained stable until erosion (Sept 2012) and for another three years after that. Following a significant life change I've regained around 60lbs in the last 12-16 months. I'm currently at day 5 of my pre-op for a VSG I'm having on Aug 25. Everyone's experience is different but for me the band worked very well. Without it I succeeded for a while but eventually had issues keeping things in line. I'm confident the sleeve will help me succeed once again. I hope this contextual information can be helpful. Any questions or anything just let me know. All the best AS
  11. I have never heard of the Switch. I had the lap band for over a year, and recently converted to the Sleeve 10 days ago. I was VERY disappointed with the lap band. I did great with the band for the first 6 months. I had lost about 40 lbs, then I had something get stuck and it was downhill from there. I was constantly seeing the doctor as things always got stuck. It seems with the band, once you had an issue, it was downhill from there. I gained weight. Spent lots of money going to the doctor to have Fluid let out, then even more money to get fluid back in once my stomach "rested". My advice.....don't do the band. I know it works for a lot of people.....but the sleeve has been great for me thus far. The band was a nightmare.
  12. I have an 11cc Realize band. I'm 5 months out and at my last fill went from 5.5cc's to 7cc. I'm feeling that this may be the green zone. funny.. I didn't think I would ever say that! Just remember that everyone is different. I may try for .5cc's more at my next appt. I can eat most everything except bread, dry meat and have to chew like crazy. I usually feel full after about a cup of food.. some days its more, some days it's less. It's so exciting getting to this point. I haven't lost much weight since being banded and have been super frustrated, but now it's really starting to work! Good luck!

    Nervous!

It's natural to be nervous, but if you are committed to this it is a wonderful tool to aid in a healthier, happier lifestyle. It won't be a walk in the park but will help you in your Quest. It's great that you are taking control of your health and weight at a young age. So many people I talk to say they wish they would have done it sooner as they have such a better quality of life now. Also, remember that this is reversible if you truly had complications from it later in life. Make sure to reach out to others for support via this site or support groups as you can get a lot of encouragement and great ideas to stay on track. It is a huge change in your lifestyle but once you can get past the mental challenge it poses, the physical benefits are so worth while. Best of luck to you!

    terrified!

thanks everyone, Sarah, the reason they are against it is pretty much the same as your family, they say i should do it on my own lol..if i could, i wouldnt be fat, and they say it is dangerous because i am removing most of my stomach, and when i say it, it does sound extreme, but if i cant lose the weight with diet excersise and the band, whats left? I am too scared to do bypass, so this is the only answer it seems for me... i am scared of leaks or infection, how long does it take before the suture line is healed and leak is not a concern anymore and how do you know your not eating or drinking too much to break the staples. Is the surgery extremely painful, im sorry if im a pain, but i am just so scared, especially since my neighbor and friend who is an anesthesiologist says she has seen this surg and it is radical......grrrrrrrr why do people make things harder than it has to be? thanks for listening...soryy im whining...........vicki

    DS-ers! Question about food intake!

Thanks!! You guys are awesome! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt
  16. I choose to weigh on the day I have to get up early in the morning. I work one morning shift a week, so I weigh Thursday's at 6:40 am, when I wake up after I've gone to the bathroom. That is the only weight I record. Now strangely that is not my lowest weight of the day. It is usually around noon or one (before I eat lunch). I am a chronic weigher it helps keep me on track. I try to ignore the day to day fluctuations. I do try to look at what I ate the day before. But I only truly accept the one weight a week.
  17. Damn scale. I work out and jump on that scale and it seems like it hardly moves then go to the dr and realize I lost 9 pounds in a month. Felt like I had lost nothing because I was watching it go down ounce by ounce. I weigh once a week now, at the gym, don't even have a scale at home. The scale will drive you crazy! LOL I feel great, that's what is most important! So many non scale victories to enjoy along with the weight loss, don't forget how rewarding they can be too! Good Luck!
  18. Halfway to goal, and only 10 more pounds until I am in a normal weight range for my height!
  19. Just wanted to update you guys with some new pics and updates on my progress so far. Im 26 days post op now and doing quite well. My energy has pretty much returned to normal. I am able to stand up pretty straight now, however I still feel my skin pulled tight when I do. My leg pain has gone away which is a blessing. As far as sensation when I touch the skin goes, I still have many areas that have not returned back to normal yet. The bad news is I still have my drains in. I had a little drain dramma a couple of days ago. They started to pull out and lost suction. I had to make an emergency visit and prayed that the doctor would just take them out. He would not, because I was still draining more than over 100cc per 24 hours. 30 was the number he wants to see, so I was not even close. I asked him why its taking me so long to get these drains out. He said that the reason it is taking so long is because I am a weight loss paitient and a man. He explained that men have more lymphatic tissue than women and when I was heavy I developed alot of extra lymphatic tissue that I no longer need. So the body has trouble getting rid of all the Fluid since the lymphatic system was damaged during the tummy tuck. I could be explaining this wrong, but I think thats what he said or something close to it. So long story short - I have drains still for who knows how much longer. He said I would blow up like a baloon if he took them out early so I am fine with suffering a little bit longer. He did tape the exit wounds where the drain tubes come out of very well with waterproof stuff so I am much more comfortable now. They wont pull out again thank goodness. That was freaky. The doctor took the surgical tape off of the incision when he fixed my drains and this morning I worked over an hour to remove as much glue as possible. I am really really pleased with how my scar is healing. I am also very pleased with how my bellybutton looks. I am blessed with good skin that doesnt scar that bad so I am really happy about looking forward to a nicely healed scar that should hide pretty well. The weirdest part of the tummy tuck surgery was the fact that the incision NEVER hurt but it sure as heck looked like it hurt. Oddly enough my worst pain was in my thigh area from nerve pain. Well enough of my blabbing - heres some pics for you.
  20. I have been banded for 6 months and I have lost appox 36lbs. I eat 1000-1200 calories a day and I do Cardio 5 days a week for about an hour. I wear a heart rate monitor and work out until I've lost at least 800 calories, which usually takes an hour. I've been consistently losing 1.5 lbs a week since my last fill and I feel I'm in the green zone. I know 1.5 a week is good and its been continuous, but I would like to lose at least 2lbs a week which is still considered a healthy weight loss. Any ideas? I'm up for anything!!
  21. So the Holiday Goodies are coming out and more so at work then anywhere else. First was the chocolates and candies. Now there is the susages with cheeses. Soon there is the company Christmas party. How are you handling this? Not in weather your eating these treats or not but in the fact of emotionally handling NOT eating these. Today when I came into work there was the suasage and cheese blocks sitting out in the kitchen here. This is one of my huge favorites during the holidays. It's really the first time that I missed actually having something that others are having. I just am constantly reminding myself of what I am doing and how much better I will feel in a few months/years when I have lost the weight. I am still in the full liquids phase according to my surgeons orders so even getting some suasage and cheese to mush up isn't going to work. Well no worries. So what am I doing to avoid temptation? Easy! The band. I am so scared of getting something caught in my throat and PBing that I am not willing to take the chance. Maybe next week when I am on mushies I can have some for a small lunch. LOL We will see.
  22. I only went down 2.5 in the first week, and I had plication on top of being banded! Don't even think about the weight loss for a few weeks, and BAM! It WILL start to happen! liquids doesn't necessarily mean weight loss... right now you're doing it to heal! take care!

    Weak Voice

I've felt a small change in my voice but nothing like what you've mentioned. I think that when you lose a lot of weight your vocal system could become more fragile and maybe that's what you're experiencing. I still think you should maybe talk to your PCP about it just to make sure it's not anything else.

    Using the Scale for Accountability

I read that same article and yes, I weigh every day. Part of the reason I do is that my weight gain came from ignoring the scale. I knew I was putting on weight and didn't get on a scale for 5 years because I didn't want to see that number..... Ignorance is NOT bliss and just because you don't look doesn't mean it isn't there. I will weigh myself daily for the rest of my life whether I want to or not and I will jump into action if I see a consistent increase - will never allow myself to be obese again!
  25. I am in the same boat, my insurance was saying as long as you have a BMI of 35 there will be no problems then i get a call from the doctor's office saying I need a 6 month doc supervised diet and exercise program. I have now seen the doctor to start the program but began to think about the times i have been to the doctor in the past year and i know my weight has been brought up so i have now started pulling records from my Dr. Office and OB/GYN. So maybe I can go to the doctors office for just a couple months instead of the 6 they are requiring. I am just wondering if there are going to be any more hurtles to jump after this? Hopefully I won't have to wait until April. I've been dieting since i was 16.
