  1. I was sleeved Oct 2013 & lost 90lbs (gained back 20 lbs) but never got to goal weight or close. I really committed to changing my lifestyle; exercising (running & weight lifting) & used myfitness pal to log food. I felt great & looked great. Then, life unraveled. In 2016 found out my husband of 20yrs was cheating on me, I realized he was an alcoholic & we divorced, I was laid off from my job & then diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. My kids were 10 & 12 at the time & I had no family to help me (both parents deceased & brother lives 3hrs away by plane). I went through 9hr surgery to remove a foot of my colon & then 7 mos of chemo & steroids. I put on 60lbs during chemo & have not been able to lose it. I had a bad fall after last chemo treatment from neuropathy in feet. I have so much pain in my knees I can’t run. Don’t know if all due to excess weight, arthritis (I’m 54), chemo, menopause? I finished my ins requirements for a revision & scheduling revision to bypass is next. But, I am so hard on myself & questioning if it will work and if I shouldn’t be messing with my body especially surviving cancer? I have regained all my weight &depressed. I hate the way I look & struggle with trying to be happy I am alive after cancer. I have heard weight loss is slower after revision. Is that always the case? Anyone else have cancer after wls & regained and had revision? I feel lost. I miss the adrenaline I used to get from working out.

    Anthem BCBS Appeal

Issue isn't the insurance carrier it's what is in the specific contract. I have BcBS of KS I'm a state employee office said not have issues with BcBS plans told the they would mine as our group doesn't like to approve anything. It took them 3 tries over a 9 month period before I was approved even with a BMI over 50. Thank god I work in medical industry so I knew what to expect and how to head them off. Some insurance companies will try to get out of paying for anything but they sure want your premium. I had sleeve June 2015 have lost 180 lbs as of beginning of this month but need revision to bypass as stomach has pulled up into esophagus causing pain and nausea even when drinking plain Water. We have started the fight with BcBS as they are saying not medically necessary since I have lost over 50% of needed weight loss within 2 year period per contract. Need surgery to fix medical issue not for weight loss. Daaaa. Fight is on Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  3. I am on the same journey. I lost 56 pounds with my lap band but gained it back, plus more. I now have Barrett's Esophagus from gerd and a hiatal hernia, probably from getting food stuck and throwing up daily. My revision to bypass is scheduled for 12/14/17. I hope you don't have to wait too long. Good luck[emoji255]

    Newbie...surgery date 3-10-11

I can't answer a whole lot of "post op" questions, as I haven't had my surgery yet, but from my research and reading these boards, the risk of leaks is only for a couple weaks but can happen a bit later. And some leaks can go undetected even for months and so then there you are 3 months later and think you just had a leak when it was actually there way earlier. I believe the stomach tissue grows over the staple line and makes it that much stronger. I am going to Mexico with Dr. Aceves and his required hospital stay is 3 days. There are usually much shorter stays (some go home the next day!) in the states for various reasons. His 3 day stay is included in the price. I am thankful for the longer stay. There is a whole section on here for band to sleeve revision. I know Tiffykins had one and she has a great wealth of knowledge on the subject. Good luck to you! I am getting sleeved March 9th, so we will be starting out together!
  5. Did you have success after revision? From my understanding, having the revision is not as effective as the first surgery that was done. Did you experience this?
  6. I was supposed to be using Dr. Basa in Cedar Park for my lap band to sleeve revision and then at the last minute found out that I couldn't anymore and had to switch. So the only one that I could find that could get me in this late in the year was Dr. Michael Morris. He seems wonderful but has anyone used him or this hospital before?

    Sleeve revision to bypass 2/6.

Best of luck with your revision surgery! I did the same thing for the same reasons a year ago. My biggest issue was a hiatal hernia that had caused great pain and difficulty eating. I also had pretty bad reflux. It seemed like recovery was about the same the second time around, although I was seven years older. I did not lose as much weight after the bypass, but probably because I didn't have nearly as much to lose. As has been said, be careful to chew thoroughly and you still might find some foods that cause you challenges for a while. Just go slowly and if something causes issues wait a while before trying it again. The pouch does react differently than the sleeve and it takes a while to learn how to deal with it. Two things that you may or may not experience after the bypass are dumping syndrome (your body reacting to sugars) or reactive hypoglycemia or late dumping (your body overproducing insulin in response to a meal). I was lucky not to experience dumping but do have issues with the reactive hypoglycemia. I noticed that I lost weight for about 3 months after the revision, then stopped. One difference for me this time is that if I gain weight it seems to stay around, where often times with the sleeve I would gain a couple pounds then lose them easily. Not sure whether this means that my metabolism wants to be at a higher set point weight. I didn't really do the revision to lose weight, and I'm still 15-20 pounds lower than when I had the revision, but it is something I've noticed. Also, my experience is that although the surgery helped tremendously with reflux, for me it's still not gone completely. I'm still taking omeprazole daily, and if I eat certain things in the evening I might still have a reflux issue late at night. I can completely control this by not snacking at night.
  8. Here is some of the basic advantages to having the sleeve, I pasted the information from the Bariatric.us website. I went through the 12 week Kaiser pre-op program and received tons of information on the surgery and on the nutritional requirements before and after surgery. There are tons of success stories on this website and also alot of issues, mostly in the early phases of recovery after surgery. Most long term sleevers wish they had done the surgery long ago. I will be sleeved in April of this year, and I have been on restricted calories since last September and already lost nearly 40 pounds. I am looking forward to the next leg of this journey. The effects of gastric sleeve surgery are: restricts food intake controls hunger Following gastric sleeve surgery, food continues to move through the digestive system naturally, from the time it enters the stomach to the time it is released into the small intestine through the pyloric valve. The difference is that after surgery the amount of food that can be eaten at any one time is greatly reduced. The surgery also helps to control hunger, because the upper portion of the stomach that produces the hunger stimulating hormone Ghrelin is removed during surgery. Advantages Intestines not cut, rerouted, or bypassed, so does not cause malabsorption or nutritional deficiencies Keeps pyloric valve intact, thus reducing ulcer risk and avoiding dumping syndrome Food does not get stuck on way into stomach, as is possible with gastric banding Can usually be performed laparoscopically, even on very obese patients Safer and less complex than a combined restrictive/malabsorptive procedure, especially for patients with health problems Option for patients with health concerns or medical issues, such as anemia, Crohn’s disease, anti-inflammatory drug use, or prior surgery, that prevents them from other bariatric procedures Does not require a medical implant (gastric band) or adjustments Average weight loss of 30% to 50% excess weight in first eighteen months May be converted to duodenal switch for additional weight loss Revision option for gastric band patients
  9. Hi and welcome! I'm preop also, should be submitting everything around June 6th(final nutrition class). I'm thrilled to hear what your surgeon said, because I've had GERD for years, and my surgeon said the same thing. I specifically asked about exacerbation and possible revision to RNY, and he reassured me that he's only had 3 patients in the hundreds he's sleeved that needed revision due to GERD. I know that there's no guarantee against complications, but this reaffirmed my gut feeling(pun intended) that the VSG was the right choice for me. Good luck to you!
  10. I received on Tuesday my second fill after my revision surgery. My doctor did put about 3-4 cc in during surgery, and I got 1 cc last month and 1 cc Tuesday. I can just about feel everything pass through the band. It isn't that uncomfortable unless I take too big of a gulp or too big of a bite. Is this normal or should I get some taken out? I'm paranoid since I did have a slipped band before.

I am loving my sleeve too

Not exercising....and grazing.... I lost 112 with the band before the revision and I hate to gain it back.....I just want to start losing again so it looks like I need to get busy!!!
  12. I wondered that same thing. I'm scheduled for band to sleeve revision on july 16. I asked my surgeon if my reflux would stop. He said "probably not". I most likely will have to pop numerous meds to keep it at bay. Here's website that explains it a litttle: http://www.thinnertimes.com/weight-loss-surgery/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy/vertical-sleeve-gastrectomy-risks-and-complications.html Good luck!

Advice from the experts please? :-)

I am also having the same concerns as you in deciding on a surgery. I need to lose 125 pounds and my doctor also recommended the sleeve instead of the switch because I'm 28 and want to have children very soon. But he said I would only lose 60 pounds also with the sleeve and i could come back and do the switch after I'm done having kids. I don't want to have to have another surgery, I want to do it right the first time. I've already had the lap band 3 years ago and am now getting a revision, so a 3rd surgery for me is not an option. My man in concern is having children right after the switch.
  14. My RNY-RNY revision is now scheduled for December 21. I am so ready! I just hope that it doesn't get postponed due to COVID. I was told that all of the hospitals in my area are full due to COVID patients, but the clinic is reevaluating the surgery schedule week by week.
  15. I have chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, RA, and osteoarthritis, plus a few other little things like a vitamin D deficiency and Hypersomnia. I'm 2 months post-op. Some days I feel great, some days I don't. My symptoms really revolve around the weather. (We had tornadoes yesterday so I felt that coming for a few days) anyway, the hardest is all the medication i was on. Trying to figure out what I can and cannot take anymore. I'm currently at my doctors office right now to talk about something other than NSAIDS. I'm tired but I do have more energy if that makes any sense at all. I don't mind getting up to do things but I am exhausted. I'm still not back up to my full doses I had pre-op and I miss it. But I had the surgery in hopes of getting a little better and eventually being able to back off some of these pills. I seem to be happier and I think it's just because it's getting easier to move this big old body around. 16. Now that I'm back on the liquid stages from the revision surgery, I've been looking through the Food forum again and paying more attention to what others on the liquid stages are doing. I've noticed more than a few people say that post op, their surgeon's had them on clear liquids only. Some for a few days, some for a few weeks even. My surgeon has me on liquids for three weeks post op, then slowly transitioning to mushies and solids over three weeks. His liquid diet is "anything that will go through a straw". This includes even stuff such as icecream, although the papers said to make that only an occasional. My understanding of clear liquids, from working in the medical industry for 8 years is water, broth, plain tea and coffee (no milk or creamer) and rehydration type drinks. Perhaps I had it wrong? But my question is, has anyone who's meant to be on the clear liquids for several weeks asked the surgeon why? I know its always best to follow the surgeon's orders and I'm fine with that, I just really want to know, if there's any other reason to be on clear liquids other than its low calorie/carb/fat? And if on this for several weeks, where do your nutrients that are really important for healing come from? I'm sitting here counting my blessings that this soup I have in the crockpot (Mexican chicken soup) can be stuck in the blender later and eaten by me for dinner LOL.
  17. I am so happy to have had this surgery. Absolutely no regrets. I have ups and downs like everyone, but I've never had a down bad enough that I've regretted this procedure. Mine was mostly covered (a revision from unsuccessful lap band), but if I knew then how I'd feel now, I would have found a way to pay had it not been. Its changed my life for the better. Good luck with your decision.
  18. I had my original WLS in Jan. 2005 & a revision on 8/21/2006. The revision was an open surgery and I have a 6 inch scar down the middle of my tummy. The doc had to remove about 1.5 lbs of scar tissue just to get to the band to repair it and replace the port. To say that I was in pain is an understatement. I took a full two weeks off before returning to work and the first two weeks back at work, I worked from home, in my long sleep shirts and socks - it was all the clothes I could get on my body - I was so swollen and bloated. I am incredibly blessed to have been able to work from home for a full two weeks (and 2 or 3 days a week ongoing). I totally needed that time to recuperate. Please, take all the time you need, even if it means putting off a car payment (w/an extension from the lender of course) or borrowing money from your 401(k) ... whatever it takes. It's your health! If you don't heal properly, you won't be able to fully participate in your own weight loss to the fullest extent possible and that would be such a shame!

  20. If anyone know of any doctors that approve the sleeve revisions. It has been 5 yrs since my sleeve. I cannot find a doctor to approve for a revisions. My eating habits is still the same. I am not sure for the weight gaining. I have severe arthritis in my knees & shoulders. So exercising is not fun for me. Are all doctors against revisions. Help!!!
  21. Hi Heather.I'm Leslie. I had a major slip with my band also and thought I'd tell you a little about my experience in case it might help you with your decision... My insurance didn't cover the sleeve surgery when I had my slip and my doc wasn't doing cash payments for it so I talked at length with him about waiting it out (he was pretty sure they'd come around eventually) or replacing the band. Now, I am kind of and instant gratification kind of gal (probably obvious lol) and at first I thought I'd just go ahead and have the band replaced. But, I hadn't been all that happy with it and was plateauing, etc. Long story short I decided to wait for the revision. Even though I had to wait a year from the slip to get this surgery I am so very happy I did it!!! Now, had you asked me about 6 months into the waiting game I would have cried (ok, I did-and a lot lol) and gotten mad (did that a lot too lol) about the whole thing...the "mind game" has always been my biggest struggle and throughout my year waiting for insurance, etc. I gained all but about 15 pounds back of the close 80 I had lost with the band. Talk about depressing...I tell you this not to scare/worry you about gaining it back but to tell you that I do feel that waiting for this surgery was the right thing for me/my body. I feel better not having the band in me and I feel better when I eat/drink. July 7 was my one month surgiversary and I have lost 28 pounds. Of course I wish it was more (another mental struggle for me) but I am super happy that I am on the way back down and am trying to stay off the scale and just enjoy feeling better. Btw, my doc does the band removal surgery separate from the sleeve gastrectomy so I had to wait about three months in between removal and sleeve. Getting the band out was a piece of cake. I went back to work the next day for a 1/2 day and then was back to work full time the day after that. I felt like my sleeve surgery was also a piece of cake. I was walking like crazy the day after and the nurses were so encouraging and were even trying to guess how many laps I'd do each day...the whole experience was awesome. My doc had to leave me a little bit bigger at the top because of all the damage and scarring the band had caused but I'm not worrying about that (ok, trying not to lol). I feel great, am working out, and have had no problems so far. Whatever you decide...best of luck to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Just stay on the diet...

Facebook can be the Devil sometimes. It is for that reason I have created an alter ego Facebook page. The truth is unless you're in the WLS community they simply won' understand. Then sometimes your WLS friends won't either! Anyway, I at least get far fewer asinine statements from individuals who have no clue what its like to be "me". Just keep doing you, and have your revision. You WON'T regret it. I know, I'm a revision from band to sleeve too!
  23. Ive been staying below 60-70 carbs a day for 2 weeks. I have all my protien and almost all my water. I followed my food steps and am a month out where I am supposed to start introducing regular food. I eat under 1000 calories a day. Sorry if i make you mad by asking if other people can eat a lot. im just curious. My heaviest weight was 369....I weigh 247. Thats 122 pounds. Im no stranger to weight loss. I got rid of the band because of issues and got a revision. Not trying to cheat it but wondering if i am not alone in being able to eat more than anyone else. I was under 1000 calories yesterday and at 40 some carbs.

    I don't belong here

Thank you so much for the KIND responses. When I was researching the band, there seemed to be quite a few people on here who had had revisions to the sleeve, and also others like me who wanted to compare the results for the 2 of them. I wish everybody the best success with their weight loss, and if anybody pre op would like to know anything specific about the sleeve, I'm more than happy to chat.
  25. I had my band removed in 2013 due to slippage resulting in GERD I wanted a sleeve but surgeon said it isn't suitable for me and suggested bypass instead. After reading multiple threads on this forum of sleeve to RNY revision, I think it's a wise thing for me to do. Sent from my SM-G920F using the BariatricPal App
