    Why did you choose bypass?

Hi, I had the bypass. I was insulin resistant and took 100units of insulin 2 times a day plus 500mg of Metformin 2 times a day. I lost 132#'s in 6 months, some In contribute to having strictures (like scar tissue in the opening of my pouch) I got down to 117#'s which was way to low I looked horrible. I did gain 8#'s back but I have maintained my 125#'s for 3 years. I used to take 12 different medications, now I take 4 most for my blood pressure, I just don't know how to let the stress go. LOL I stress over everything. Any how when I was making my decision I'm 57 years old and this will be my only chance to at last lose the weight, which I have lost plenty of times but always gained it back plus more. I had great results BTW I am off all Diabetes meds and have been within my first month after surgery. I think this was a great decision on my part. Now you did say you have Reflux I have heard that it does make it worse with the Sleeve. And many need to have a revision to the Bypass. For myself it was "GO BIG OR GO HOME" one of the very best things I have ever done for myself. It rates up there with me getting married and giving birth to 2 children which are grown and has given me 8 beautiful grandkids. Good luck in your choice of surgeries.

    I joined the losers bench!

My biggest suggestion is don't weigh for a month! Most of the people I have known have stalled about 1 week in and then dropped significantly about 1 month out! Don't focus on losing, focus on healing! Drink lots of liquids and walk as much as you can! I am 3 weeks out and it has been a breeze. I'm back to working out (just walking right now, but running soon!) and getting plenty of fluids. I feel great and my clothes are fitting just wonderfully! My big loss in my signature is from being banded previously. I had my revision on 12/28. Good luck! SW:327 CW:239 GW:155 Heather in Texas

  5. The one thing I would say first off is "Only you and your Surgeon can make that decsion. But I had the RNY and I am 3 and 1/2 years out. I lost 132#'s in 6 months. Now I think some of that loss was due to STRICTURES (basically scar tissue) I ended up needing 5 Endoscopes and 4 Dialations. I was so insulin resistant and I took 100unitsn of insulin and 500mg of Metformin. Now I take 0 I no longer am considered Diabetic. I use to take 12 different medications, now I take 4 plus my Vitamins. So many people say that the Sleeve is less invasive but you know that they take at least 80% of your stomach out and there are that need to be revised to a RNY later down the road. One thing that I told myself I am 57 years old (60 now)so I better go big or go home!! I felt that at my age I sure don't want to go back for a revision. But as I said before it is your choice. Congratulations and which ever one you choose it is up to you to make it, as our WLS is a tool. We still do the work!!
  6. The 'gas' issues with the DS is bariatric surgeon code for "we don't really do that procedure even though we may list it on the website to get you interested in us." Yes, the DS does have some issues with smelly gas and stool for a while due to the incomplete digestion from the malabsorption - you may have experienced some of the same things early on with your bypass, and for the same reasons. It is something to consider, but not really a reason to avoid the procedure as it is something that is managed and treated. Even those of us with the VSG and no malabsorption can run into some of these problems simply because our diets have changed and out gut flora (all those nice little bacteria that live in out intestines that help digest our food) haven't yet adjusted to the new diet. Probiotics can help with those adjustments. I would be wary about sending any deposits until you establish that they can do the procedure that you want, which I doubt that they can (or that you really don't want them to try.) The DS is a more technically challenging procedure to perform than the other mainstream bariatric procedures, which is why relatively few practices offer it - it takes resources to develop, and particularly to maintain, the requisite skills. The revision from an RNY to a DS is another step above that in complexity, which is why only a few of the experienced DS surgeons offer it (half a dozen or so.). For a long time, Dr. Gilberto Ungston Beltran was the only surgeon in Mexico that one would consider for a DS. Dr. Aceves was training with him to offer it in his practice before he died, so I would be wary of others that say they offer it - do they really have the experience to perform it, or will they do something else once they get inside? A distal RNY is sometimes offered as an alternative to the DS by surgeons who don't have DS skills - look carefully into that as to whether it would be a viable alternative (though one needs to ask why it is not routinely done?) If you haven't run into it yet, a good information resource on the DS is dsfacts.com. It doesn't undate that often, but they do have an incomplete list of DS surgeons and a listing of various support sites and forums (including BP!) to check into, as you are pursuing a fairly rare procedure so you should cast your net widely to find others who have been through it. I know several who have done this revision and are quite pleased with the results, mostly thru Drs. Keshishian or Rabkin in California. My best advice would be to save your pennies and scour whatever financial resources that you have to do it stateside with one of the guys with the demonstrated experience to do what you want done - this is not a straightforward sleeve or bypass job. Good Luck

    Road to revision

Thank yall for the encouragement! It sounds like we all had similar issues with the band! I'm so excited about the revision! Sent from my SM-G935T using the BariatricPal App

Good luck. you will love it. I was banded in 2005 and revised in October...RNY is sooo much better!

    Road to revision

My timeline is somewhat similar - banded in 2006, lost 100lbs and felt great. Looking back now I can see where I started having problems with my band...it was way too tight for too long. Hypothyroidism and a pregnancy later I've gained it all back and then some. Now that all the Fluid is gone the reflux isn't as bad but my band is now useless. I've been working with a surgeon for almost 9 months now towards a revision to an RNY and I'm currently scheduled and waiting for final approval, YAY! Good luck to you! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  10. Hello, I just finished my 6 months of medically supervised weight loss (hoop to jump through for insurance). I was banded in December 2007 and lost 100 lbs. My band was great at first but I began having problems with my band after about 3.5 years. I had horrible reflux and slowly ended up with almost all my Fluid removed and gaining back all but 25 lbs. I am very excited about having my band removed. My surgeon has recommended the bypass and says it's the safer option after having a band. I am OK with that and after reading more! It does seem like the better option for be due to the reflux issues as well. Now I'm just waiting on insurance approval. I'm very excited and hope to have surgery in the next 6 weeks. YAY! Anyone else out there on a similar timeline? Sent from my SM-T580 using the BariatricPal App
  11. Check with Dr. Esquerra in Mexicali. I'm unsure if he does revisions but I know many who had his/her DS with him. I've also sent you a PM.

    TO REVISE OR TO REMOVE?

Mine wasn't removed, but I had 2cc's out of the 5cc's in my band when I got a stomach virus that caused me to throw up hourly. Well...it didn't take long to pack the pounds back on and make matters worse, I haven't been able to find my "sweet spot" since then - it's been over a year. Long story short, I'm basically back to my starting weight again. I go see my surgeon on Thursday and we'll talk about my options or if he can get me stabilized again. If you have the opportunity, I'd revise to something else.
  13. I had my Lap Band to Gastric Bypass revision on June 6, 2016. Lost about 25lbs so far (not as much as I hoped for). Could really use some advise - have been terribly disappointed in myself and have fallen "off the wagon"
  14. I started my journey adamant I was going to get the Sleeve but my surgeon felt the Bypass would be a better choice due to my BMI of 62. My co-morbities were high blood pressure, pre-diabetes, and osteoarthritis. After I finished the requirements for surgery and was ready to submit to insurance, I decided to go with the bypass. While I did not have any issues with reflux pre-op, I felt I wanted to have only 1 surgery and not be someone who down the line required a revision due to reflux, etc. So far I have not had any issues. I recovered well and can eat all approved solid Proteins (beef, chicken, shrimp, etc)
  15. Im excited im having a revision from lapband to sleeve Sent from my SM-G935P using the BariatricPal App
  16. I just started the process of looking to get DS Surgery in Mexico. I know there are a lot of different organizations that can coordinate this process for you, the one I filled out the Health form for is Tijuana Bariatrics, using Dr. Fernando Garcia at Hospital CER. I got a response that I have been cleared for surgery. I am an RNY Gastric Bypass member (10 years out) and want to do a revision to the DS (I gained all the weight back in the last 3-4 years). When I first submitted my form, their response was they wanted to "revise" my gastric bypass because they don't recommend the DS because of gas issues? Has anyone else heard of this? I want the surgery, but only if I can get the DS. Also, my coordinator Karen seems very quick and anxious to get my deposit (this is self pay because the insurance I have through my work doesnt cover bariatric surgery at all). I am worried about getting scammed?! This all seems too easy. Hoping that someone here can lend some advice? Also, wondering if anyone has used any of the financing options listed on their website? Citerra Finance, Medicard, Medical Financing Solutions.. I guess I got a lot of questions..ha ha Sara
  17. My date for revision from lapband to sleeve is February 8! How do you get the weight tracker?
  18. You look amazing!...I'd kill to get there. I'm 3.5 months post revision...plugging away, but happy with my progress.
  19. Hi all, I've been slowly but surely getting closer to my goal of 150-160. Sunday marked 18 months since my revision. It was not a walk in the park, but completely worth it. I have PCOS, and the insulin resistance was making it virtually impossible to lose weight. I've got a few other posts out there with pictures documenting my progress over time. I'll post a before and after picture on this post as well. I post because I was completely discouraged by six months out--I wasn't losing as fast as others that post here and it was getting me down. Hopefully other people can be reassured by this post that if you follow the eating plan, you will eventually lose weight no matter how lousy your metabolism. Here goes: winter 2014 and this morning
  20. Ooh my, I'm so sorry you are going through this I've had mine for almost 10 yrs. Never had any complications, till some regurgitation a few months ago. I only got it if I ate anything after 7pm. Got all the liquid out and slowly adding it but in that process I've gained 15lbs. I can't even loose what I gained and have no issues now but want to do a revision :/
  21. I've had my band for 13 years. Yes, I "throw up" almost regularly. Can't eat bread hardly, fruits, french fries, etc. I lost 50 pounds and 18 months ago had a tummy tuck. The placement of the port has cause me ALOT of pain the last 9 months! It is now trying to poke through. A stitch has come through and I've also lost another 25 pounds. I'm so happy where I am weight wise and only have 15 pounds to go! Now I'm talking with a surgeon about removal. I'M SCARED TO DEATH! I DON'T EVER WANT TO BACK TO BEING OBESE EVER AGAIN!!!! Not even overweight! I've only read posts of other people removing the devices and gaining a BUNCH of weight!!! I'm thinking of revising, but 13 years is a long time to have something foreign in your body! I'm thinking of just asking him to move the port... Thoughts?

  23. Idk, I was asking if anyone had a band revision to another surgery with him.I assumed you were considering using him for a revision. In which case that is the first question I'd ask him. You want to hear hundreds (or more) ideally.Yes researching him. So I'm trying to hear from people who have used him.
