  1. Today I'm six weeks postop and was able to meet with my surgeon for a check up but I was told that he would like me to be under 200 pounds by my next six week check up. I'm concerned that I'm actually not losing a lot of weight and I'm barely losing 1 to 2 pounds a week. Does anybody have any ideas on meal plans and/or work out tips that I can work on so I can boost my weight lost?
  2. I had my WLS on August 23rd and was not losing any weight. Pre Op I was 311 and stalled for about 2 1/2 to 3 weeks out with minimal weight loss. It was the weirdest thing, almost over night I started having great progress and am now at 291. So, for anyone out there who is experiencing what I did, have faith! this will also happen for you. There is a lot of great advice and good people on this forum, listen to them. AnnMarie
  3. Ok, I am new and still researching this WLS. So here is my question: From reading the WLS boards, why do the RNY patients seem to loose weight faster than lapbanders. I realize they are re-routing the intestines, but isn't the stomach pouch the same size (after you get to your restriction point). Don't both groups have to follow the same rules, chew, chew chew, no white products (bread, sugar, etc.). IF both groups are consuming high protien, low fat, then why the difference? I am not a NUT (and I mean nutritionist not the other kind), but why so big differences??
  4. I don't know how that's ferret like but Imma roll with it! I'm super excited because I got a different doctor for NorCal Kaiser and everything seems to be going at lightening speed. On one note, I wanted to say, damn it feels good to say, "Yes I'm overweight, yes I am fat, but I want to make it better." I love saying this to my doctors, for YEARS I've had to deal with my doctors repeatedly telling me "You're really obese, you need to lose weight, blah blah..." as if I didn't already know it, as if I was ignorant of the fact that I was very whale-like and having edema problems with my feetsies for no reason x.X OMG it's so liberating to finally say YES I KNOW!! Now can you help me make get some long term help now??! The new doctor I have couldn't be nicer and was all for the surgery. My husband came and has been the pinnacle of helpfulness, even when his annoying aunt *who btw HAD a gastric bypass 3 years ago* bluntly told me I wasn't 300+ pounds so I need to just get cracking to the gym... >.< the nerve really lol! He abruptly told her, "Ya thank you, we'll get right on it ma'am." Oooo them's fightin' words! She hates being called ma'am since she's the type that believes that is an "old persons" title. :tongue_smilie: thank you husband I'm so glad I found this site, I would have been totally overwhelmed and was feeling quite alone with my thoughts before I came here. So apparently I need to lose 10 percent or so of my body weight to show commitment and then take it from there. Geez things feel like they're going too quickly, but I'm sure there will be other snags/issues along the way. But things are looking positive

    Frustration

there are many factors that determine your rate of weight loss, many of which you have little or no control over - e.g., age, gender, metabolic rate, starting BMI, whether or not you lost a lot of weight prior to surgery. The one factor you DO have control over is whether or not you're sticking to your program. In the end, your level of commitment will have a MUCH greater impact on your ultimate success than your rate of weight loss will. I was a slow loser from the get-go, and I ended up losing 100% of my excess weight. SOOOO....are you sticking to your plan? Weighing/measuring things? Logging everything that goes into your mouth? If not, start with that. If yes, then unfortunately, you ARE a slow loser, but that doesn't mean that you can't get to your goal. It takes hard work and commitment, but you will eventually get there.

    Frustration

No reason to say the same thing as above, However look at it as positive look at the weight loss you have acquired - So it may take you a little longer Just stay focused and on track. In years ahead willl it really matter that it took 16 months to get healthy and at your goal weight Vs the frustration you are feeling being anxious to get it off quickly. It wont matter down the road, Stay healthy and you got this! FYI mix up your calories a little and do some intermittent fasting to break the stalls. Worked for me

    Weight watchers

Weight Watchers is AWESOME! I lost 100 lbs three different times prior to surgery with WW and exercise. A permanent injury cost me my mobility nearly, so I could no longer do the exercise, so I had wls to keep my mobility. I still go every week to WW for the support and accountability of Mr. Scale. I am not following the points anymore or anything because of this sleeve of mine; I don't eat enough to count points. I highly recommend a person choosing WW instead of wls. You just have to choose to make it your life, not just a diet.

    liquids only -- pre-op diet

I'm on day 7 of a 14 day clear liquid diet. I drink so much Protein throughout the day, there have only been two times that I've noticed I'm hungry. And both of those times a little broth and some more protein fixed the problem. I think after your brain adjusts to "you cannot eat solid food" types of thoughts, you'll find it's not as hard as you think. The only real problem I've had is that I haven't lost any weight. None. And I don't seem to be retaining fluids. I'm so frustrated. My doctor won't do the surgery if I'm more than 5 pounds heavier than my first appointment (over a year ago), and I am still 17 pounds heavier, so I need to lose at least 12 pounds. I'm doing everything I'm supposed to, and I'm still not losing weight. I hope you have much better luck losing weight than I am having ! Hang in there, it will get better.

    Questions

My boyfriend has had a cornea transplant - the good news is you'll probably recover much faster from WLS than from the cornea transplant! The stomach has better blood flow Edit: I weigh myself daily usually, but I don't let stalls weigh me down. I just use it as motivation to keep up with my water, protein, and exercise. Just remember, unlike previous weight loss attempts, the weight WILL come off this time as long as you stick to your doctor's recommendations, so don't sweat the number on the scale - just make sure you're doing your part! ❤️

    Day 3 of Pre-op diet

I did aweful yesterday on my pre-op diet. We were in the car driving home from vacation for 18 hours. I ate fast food for all three meals. And this morning, I'm so bloated. I'm hoping alot of it is Water weight. I have to really stick to this diet for the next 9 days. But I also think my Special K Protein drinks were not that good for me. After logging them on my tracker I realized way to many carbs in them. NOw that I'm back home and have my samples of shakes I bought here, going to start on them today. Has anyone been losing weight yet?
  11. Lbs lost isn't useful because we all weigh different amounts to start. We all have various hormonal fluctuations, will handle the IV fluids and bloating and a million other factors differently. I might lose 10 lbs my first month, which for me would be 4% of my body weight, while someone starting 100 lbs heavier than me might lose 15 lbs in the first month. But guess what--that's also 4% of his or her body weight. So who did better? No point in comparing. The heavier you are to start, the more weight you are likely to lose in the first month. But the heavier you are to start, the more you have to lose anyway.

    Mississippi Sleevers

The meal plan is not hard. I find that I must eat about every two hours in order to get all of my calories in. If I let them drop, I stop loosing. I didn't eat whole foods until week six post op. And yes, I had to see a dr every month for six months to document my weight before I was approved.

Help Me Get Back on the Right Track

Hello everyone! I feel so ashamed of myself and I feel like people are staring at me all the time "saying she isnt losing weight", I had my lapband done in Oct 2013 and up til now I have only lost 36 pounds and 15 inches, I cant get by with only a cup of food, I feel so guilty, I feel I have let my family down and more importantly myself...I feel like I need someone to put a week or month menu in front of me on what to eat...I work nights and so with my schedule backwards to the rest of my family I feel like I eat around the clock....Anyone who would be willing to help me get on the right track or someone I should see to get on the right track would be greatly appreciated.....

    Feet size

Yes, you can go down up to two sizes depending on your current size and normal fluid retention in your feet. Most of the weight is actually fluid and not fat in the feet.

    I Dreamed a Dream...

Wow! Time flies! I have surgery on Wednesday. I work in the school system so last week was spring break... and I was sick with bronchitis. I haven't lost as much weight on the Pre-Op Diet, but I'm pretty sure that's because I felt like death for a bit and hardly moved! I am about 11 pounds down though and feeling pretty good! I can tell my anxiety about the procedure is creeping up. Had a crazy dream last night that the nurse called me and said my surgeon couldn't perform the procedure because he broke his finger. I was running from office to office looking for a new surgeon when it hit me that the surgeon she named isn't my surgeon... but my least favorite professor from grad school- oy vey!
  16. @@slc3568 Alot of people feel this way before surgery. You are experiencing withdrawal of nicotine and caffeine on top of the usual nerves of WLS. Think of all the things you want to do once you lose weight - remember the answers to "why bother?" when you start to have doubts and stay strong - you have less than a week - you can do this!

    PS in Mexico

I used Dr. Castellanos he has offices in Monterrey & in Reynosa, Mexico, I went to REynosa because it is right across from the McAllen border and that is where my mom lives. I am 100% satisfied w/ my tummy tuck and my body liposculpture.. The hospital was a private hospital that was very nice, I received awesome care. I am bilingual so the language was not a problem for me. My sister-in-law had a tt w/ him also in December and she is also very pleased w/ her results so far. My cousin who had gastric bypass is getting a lower body lift and tt on Monday. I would highly recommend my doctor to anyone wishing ps. I am contemplating having a breast lift and reduction, trying to convince husband.. but looks like I'm losing the battle, he loves my big breasts... I lost so much weight and didn't lose one bit of breasts now everyone just assumes I had a breast augmentation, which is really funny to me.. If they only knew that this mega awesome bra does miracles and once the bra is off, there goes the miracle and there hang the girls..

    Personality change

I don't think my personality has changed. But I was told by my good friend at work, that someone said I was COCKY since I lost 70 lbs. I was so livid. My friend did tell the person that she would be COCKY also if she lost all that weight and she worked very hard to lose it. Everyone is noticing that I lost weight and they come up to me and ask me about it. If I am sitting, they tell me to stand up and I do and then I do a little dance for them. We laugh and they tell me they are so happy for me. If you don't mention anything about my weight I don't say anything also. I just said screw that person. I am happy, I feel good, I can now wear cute dresses. So leave me alone. LOL
  19. I will be banded on March 12, 2010 during Spring Break, as I am currently in school for my RN. I have been an LPN since 2005 and decided to take the plunge and finish up my education and in the process suffered a herniated L4 disk on November 6, 2009. My doc told me that I had some major life style changes to make if I was going to be able to practice as an RN and #1 I need to drop 100 pounds. I was not in shock, I knew what he was going to say before he ever opened his mouth and I immediately began talking to people about other options besides another fad diet. That is where my journey actually began, finally coming to grips with the idea that I was powerless over my weight and that no matter how many diets I have been on in my lifetime that I needed some help. During the summer I took a nutrition class and actually dropped 40 pounds by eating healthy and exercising to only gain it back, plus some during the fall semester and let me tell you I am truly at wits end. I am very thankful to my physician for being honest and candid, but at the same time I wanted to scream at him for telling me to lose weight but also putting me on an activity restriction d/t my herniated disc. I finally have the feeling back in my left leg and have been cleared for walking only. I have been able to manage getting through college and only have one more semester left. I just hope that everything goes well with my pre-op diet and the surgery. I am 10 weeks out from surgery, and it sure seems like a lifetime away, but I am sure it will be here sooner than I think. I am really glad to have found this online support group and forum, so far what I've read has been very encouraging and I hope to add to the discussion.

    Your choice.

There are so many reasons for choosing the surgery that we chose. Before we even start thinking about diabetes, and our other health issues, etc. there are more basic questions. How much weight do you want to lose? How old are you? After those two questions, consider our current health issues. Some times people are trying to prevent getting obesity related diseases, but there are others of us who already have Diabetes, sleep Apnea, Hypertension (high blood pressure), etc. There is no easy answer, and only one person and her or his surgeon can make a decision.

    Your choice.

Our surgeons only do RNY. They say that for the morbidly obese it has the best rate of patients keeping their weight off. After all I have read, it does seem to be the case.

    Your choice.

Originally I wanted the band and my surgeon told me I doesn't do that procedure any more. So, if not the band I would go "all in". RNY has the highest percentage of weight loss. My high weight was #296. Also RNY can be reversed. Does not happen very often but can be done.
  23. Hi all. I have Bern a liked for about a month and just got around to posting. I am scheduled for sleeve tomorrow at 10am. Current weight is 220. I'm 5'3 and 34yrs young. Married to my high school sweetie with 2 kids. I have been so gung ho up until tonight. I am really having a difficult tine thinking about all the foods I cant have anymore. Pathetic I know. But how I'm feeling at this time. I could seriously tear in to some serious food right now. Maybe its all because I'm starving from this 7 day liquid diet. Cant imagine that tomorrow At this time I wont be wanting to eat. A little Concerned also because I have this cold. Lots ofjumk in the nose and a chunky cough. The surgeon listened to my lungs in fri and he said they were clear. Anyway. Thanks for the support that you all offer through this site. Its truely a blesssing!
