  1. Congrats on doing so well so far on your plan so far! Your current weight shows at 160 and your goal looks like it is 125. Cutting out the cardio and adding lifting is not going to get you to your goal weight quickly. People are taught that building muscle burns fat, which it totally does and it is good for you, but when your goal is to hit a certain weight, that being 125, the more you cut out cardio and add lifting, the less you are going to lose. I was really stuck around 166...as soon as I added more cardio that incorporated some strength moves (my boxing class is a lot of running with pushups and squats and such), the quicker I dropped and the more I toned. I've used trainers in the past when I was around that weight and purely lifting weights as opposed to doing a lot of cardio does absolutely nothing for me in terms of weight loss. I'm really big on the number on the scale and if you want to be 125, you can't have the muscular structure that someone who is building at 160 is going to have especially if you're building that muscle through lifting instead of through active movement like you would get in a plyometrics class or something. If you look at the Biggest Loser, they have plenty of weight work, but everything is offset with a ton of cardio. So...not do diss your trainer by any means, because he (or she) was taught to preach the value of lifting, but from someone who was at your weight and has a goal close to yours, I don't feel that dropping cardio off that much is going to help you. As a funny note, I always thought that I had to workout hard to lose weight, which is what I did the first part of my weight loss. Then I had plastic surgery and couldn't work out for almost 8 weeks and I dropped 16 pounds, some of which was very likely muscle. It made me realize there was no way I was ever hitting my goal of 129 if I didn't first get there and then start building muscle. Good luck!

    Muscle loss....Gym question

Thank you for writing such a long and detailed response! Yes, you do have a point. My weight has been stuck for a few weeks right now, but none of my pants fit anymore and have cut down on taking meds so it's inches (at least that's what it feels like). I didn't tell the trainer about my WLS because she started freaking out when I told her I was diabetic so I left it at that. It was a free session from the gym anyways. So do you think it would be better to do lift weights once a week and stick to cardio the rest of the time? In the past (prior to WLS), weights would make more of a difference in my body but everything is changed now. I'm going to ask my bariatric doctor his thoughts as well when I see him next time. Btw - how often do you work out?

    Curious

It really does vary between each individual. I weighed more after surgery than I did the morning of simply because of all the fluids I had pumped in me going through recovery. Weight starting 2 week pre-op diet: 336 Day of surgery: 318 Current (3 weeks post op): 296

Myths about exercise and weight loss?

My reproductive endocrinologist was the first to tell me that weight loss is only about 60 to 70% percent "calories in vs. calories out". The rest is hormones, body content, genetics, etc. So, if you eat way more than you put out, yes, you will gain weight. That's how most of us got in the shape we were in. I had a test done to see how many calories my body needs to operate. My body needs at least 1350 calories to breathe, operate, and function. (I had this test done a year and a half after surgery). Due to my activities, I can eat up to 2050 a day and not gain weight. If I ate that many calories everyday, however, I would put on weight. That's just how it is. I eat about 1400 to 1700 on any given day. This Saturday, I am running a half marathon, and will probably end up eating close to the 2000 mark. Exercise and food go hand in hand. You cannot out-exercise a horrible diet, and you cannot just eat so little without exercise. Well, you could, but you would have no muscle and would kill your metabolism. Everyone's bodies are different. Often, it is the types of food we choose to eat and the exercise one chooses. You have to do what is best for your body. For me, I do a mix of cardio and weight training. The cardio helps burn fat, but the weights help trim and tone.

Myths about exercise and weight loss?

Geez that was long!!! I agree with the bulk of it. Exercise only accounts for less than 20% of your overall physique (fat, muscles, etc) and diet is over 80%. People can lose weight just from changing their diet alone. Exercise is a boost really. I've never really agreed with the calorie in, calorie out though. I did once upon a time, but now it's just eating better quality food and watching how much to eat. Eat when you're hungry and stop when you're full/content. Now, the article almost came off as, you don't have to exercise at all. Although this can be true, kind of, it's even better to incorporate exercise to get the best "bang for your buck" so-to-speak. So, for weight loss, yes, it can help. But heart conditioning, muscle building, strengthening, stretching...those are all excellent benefits of exercise and we still do lose calories doing them (if you count calories) but the diet is what counts most.
  7. Just wanted to get a comparison view from others on what your workout routine is. I was banded 12/3/09 and have lost just shy of 100 lbs. so far. I hired a personal trainer that I meet twice per week starting in January 2010. I also workout on 2-3 other days per week. Here's a rundown of what I do for exercise. Thoughts? Trainer: 45 minute session combining cardio, circuit training, weight lifting (running stairs, sprints, power-lifting, metabolic training, toning) followed by 60 minutes of walking at 3.5 mph and a 6.0-7.5 gradient on the treadmill. This is twice per week. On own: -I do zumba 2-3 times per week for 60 minutes. -I do interval training on the treadmill of 7.4 mph for 90 seconds, followed by 3.5 mph for 90 seconds all at a 2.0 gradient for 30 minutes. I will sometimes walk for 10-20 minutes after this or do 15 minutes of abdominal workout or 15 minutes on the spinning bike, but not all on the same day. -Recently started doing elliptical instead of the full interval session as I am getting bored with intervals. Working my way up on the elliptical. Did 6 for the level with 90 seconds at maximum effort and 90 seconds of recovery effort for 12 minutes today (first time I tried it). My legs were shaking! I've worked my way up to dead-lifting 145 lbs with the trainer and can benchpress about 70 lbs repeatedly. I've been able to run a 5K on the treadmill, although I haven't tried it outside as the weather is horrible here. Am planning on completing my first outdoors 5K in April and doing a 5K with 12 obstacles next fall! nursemidwife86

    Four weeks post op pic

Congrats on your progress, my surgery date was 07/28 and I have hit a serious stall, no weight loss in 3 weeks and I am starting to wonder what am I doing wrong. You look amazing, got any good tips on how you are so successful?
  9. I read an article on this awhile ago. It said that it does take time for us to accept our new sizes. It said it was very important to actually do mental exercises of looking at yourself and really talking to yourself about how your body has changed! The article said this will help you to accept your bodily changes. If you don't, the article said, it is one of the major subconscious ways that we sabotage our successes! It said to continually think about how you are changing, remind yourself again and again what new size you are. It talks about all kinds of changes that we go through- marital, job promotion, loss of a loved one, but the hardest change to accept was seeing your body in a different size, whether you had a gain or a loss. I think it makes a lot of sense. It is hard to get used to. I'm not there yet but I hope to be!

How much did you lose in the first few months?

It's so individual based on your doctors pre-op recommendations. After that its all about your metabolism, exercise, how you eat….etc, etc, etc, etc. Basically, so many factors….. In my opinion….try not to compare yourself and don't look at anyone else as a gage for what you could possibly lose. it could only set yourself up to be disappointed if you don't lose what you "think you should" be losing! You and I have a very similar starting weight….but that is the only comparison you can make…. my success may be very different than yours….just be yourself… take one day at a time and do the best you can do for YOU! Wishing you lots of luck and success!
  11. Having lapband later this month, and I don't know anyone whose had the surgery. My surgeon is great, but is reluctant to give me any real indication of how quickly patients typically lose weight. He's given me a caloric "formula" for weight loss which makes sense, but I'd like to know from other people who have been banded: how much did you lose in the first month? How long before the weight loss slowed down, and how much, on average, are you losing per month now? For what it's worth, I'm female, late twenties. BMI of 41.

    Anyone use CAWL software?

Does anyone use CAWL (Computer Aided Weight Loss) software? In other words, does your computer help you lose weight in some way? I use Excel to create a spreadsheet about my weightloss. It can be seen at my blog. I'd like to be more creative though. Any ideas?
  15. Wow the big one was the one who didn’t get approved. I can’t imagine how she feels, she really wanted this so bad maybe the most out of all three of them. The brother is so arrogant, you’d think he was only 50lbs over weight the way he really believes he doesn’t have a problem [emoji58] Yo-Yo Girl from New York City
  16. Hi All, I just got my “welcome to the bariatric dept” letter and a denial letter on the same day. The denial said I don’t have a history of failed diets. My GP noted my failures specifically in my chart though. I’ve done so many diets, and Weight Watchers more times than I can count. I remember being on WW in my teens. My first prescription diet was early elementary school for G-d sake! Now I have to jump through appeal hoops. I have Kaiser (Oregon) via Medicare (I’m disabled). Any tips and encouragement is welcome!
  17. I know every weight loss journey is different but I am curious what other people in my bmi range experienced for weight loss after RNY.

  19. All my adult life, I was a size 6 shoe. When I got pregnant, my feet "grew" to a size 7 (swelling, excess weight pushing my arch down which lengthened my foot.) Since I continued to gain after my son was born, I stayed in a 7 for nearly 10 years. When I finally lost over 100 pounds with my Lapband, my feet settled back into a solid size 6-1/2. Hopefully, your feet won't change much more than 1/2 size, but I do remember throwing out at least 15 good pair of size 7 shoes!
  20. I spoke with my doctor about this same topic tgis week. She told me to play switch a roo when people asked about my weight loss....when someone asked...I could respond my saying yes I have been watching what I eat and exercising and then very quickly comment or ask them a question about them. I must admit I will have to practice that!!

Terry so glad to see you are doing well. I am almost to my 3 year bandiversary as well . I come on the site to see how everyone is doing and I still have some struggles. The biggest problem I had this year was the illness and subsequent death of my husband. emotional eating is a difficult thing to overcome. I am still doing good too , gained a few lbs throughout my husband's hospital stays and hospice at the end. WE always seek comfort in food when we are emotionally at a low point. I still am happy that I made the choice to have lapband and I have lost some of the "comfort" weight since his death in October. My health is definitely better and I am much more active than before. Take Care and check in once in awhile. I miss some of the regulars that helped me so much in the beginning.

    3 Year anniversery

Calendar reminded my that it has been 3 years since I got my lapband and I thought I would check in. Total lost is about 70 pounds, but it does fluctuate. I am still wearing size 34 pants (down from 46), although this holiday season has made them a bit tight, I should be back to normal in a couple of weeks of regular eating. Still one of the best decisions that I have ever made, especially since I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer(currently in complete remission) a couple of years ago, the weight loss made the accompanying surgery and radiation much easier on my body. Lapband is/was not a cure for me, it is a tool. I still wrestle with emotional eating although that is becoming less and less. There are times I hate the band because it forces me to seek other solutions to emotional turmoil that do not involve food. I don't visit the site very much anymore because my eating and weight are no longer a focal point of my existence, in that I think I am as close to normal as I will ever be. But this site and a large portion of the contributors were instrumental to me to getting my band to work for me. Thanks.
  23. You can do anything that is comfortable except pick up any weight (or push) above 25 lbs. I think 10 pounds should be the max. After 3 days I insured myself pushing something and my tummy was on fire for 24 hours. Bad idea. As far a bending over I purchased a picker upper. Those long arm things with a grip at the end. It saved me because bending over for the first few weeks was difficult. Your incisions are not sealed for about 3 weeks and when you bend over it puts pressure on those. Your doctor gives you the all clear for exercise depending on your situation and it's usually at 4 weeks.

    Beginning my journey!

I had plastic surgery due to excess/saggy skin even before I had weight loss surgery. Back in 2010/2011, I lost 90 pounds "on my own" and had a tummy tuck and breast lift with augmentation. I had my weight loss surgery in Sept. 2014 after having gained back a lot of those 90 pounds and now I am looking at having a spiral thigh lift this coming September to remove the excess skin from my thighs and hips. Luckily my tummy tuck held up well through my weight regain and re-loss, so no additional work will be needed there. As for hair loss, I only lost hair from 3.5 months post-op until about 5 months post-op and it began regrowing right away. I didn't lose enough for anyone else to notice. I would say, in general, post-WLS I have a lot more confidence in my body. Yes, I want additional plastics, but I am dressing much more fashionably. I actually wear dresses now, which I hadn't done since I was a little girl! I was able to buy some calf-height boots over the winter to wear with tights and leggings. Not dressing nearly as "frumpy" as I used to, taking more pride in my appearance, and I don't try to blend into the background as much anymore. Oh, and I let people take my picture now!
