    May 2022 Surgery Buddies

    How is everyone doing, I am 12 days post op, feeling good, getting the hang of not drinking immediately after eating, and down 37 lbs from highest weight. If I hadn’t worn jean shorts and left two middle incisions uncovered things would be even better. I irritated those two incisions and have to use triple antibiotic and keep them covered for a week. I will Definately cover them from now on!! 🤷🏼‍♀️
  4. I had RNY to RNY revision surgery on 12/21/21. I thought I was fine, slowly recovering, until 10 days later when I started coughing up blood. I was airlifted back to the surgical hospital with a perforated jejunum at the anastomosis and SEPSIS. I had emergency surgery and was close to death for several days. I was in the hospital for 7 weeks and in a rehab facility for 3 weeks. I was discharged with a 15 cm long open surgical wound which is still not entirely healed 3 months later (but getting close). I resumed normal activities after returning home and have no pain from the open surgical wound. I have volunteer nurses who come to my home to do dressing changes, now every other day. Because of three necessary endoscopic procedures looking for leaks or abscesses my anastomosis is stretched and I have no more restriction than I had before the revision surgery. I had lost 70 lbs prior to surgery by cutting out all sugar, flour, rice, white potatoes, processed food. I've lost 25 more since the revision. I've been told to get 90 mg protein daily and to limit my calories to 800--which is VERY difficult. To add insult to injury I'm starting to lose my hair, too. I'm really struggling with cravings in the afternoon and night. We are now considering a prescription for CONTRAVE. Do I have regrets for having the revision surgery? Of course! I wish I had left it alone. I wish my surgeon had aborted the revision when he found I had dense adhesions. However, I'm well now and am approaching a 100 lb weight loss.

    Anyone denied AND they meet ALL criteria/co-morbidities

    I totally misread this as you were denied. Oops. But for those with employer sponsored health insurance: Read the denial letter. It will give you information on why you were denied and next steps. Common reasons for denial: 1. Missing criteria 2. Not a covered service under the plan (employers can exclude bariatric coverage from their plans or it’s not offered at certain market sizes such as under 100/small group plans) 3. Alternative treatment/step therapy required such as nutritional counseling, medically supervised weight loss 4. Procedure not covered; alternative procedure covered Example: duodenal switch isn’t covered but the sleeve is 5. Age -either too young or too old All denial letters will give you next steps to take action and appeal the decision. I suggest work with your provider to file the appeal. I’ve been in health insurance for nearly a decade and i have seen these denials before.

    Let’s talk about… skin

    It depends on a lot of factors, your age, your size, how you carry your weight, etc. Some people have plastic surgery after their weight is stable and some don’t. Some of it is personal preference. Some people also have problems with rashes and stuff under hanging skin. I’m sure some of those who have had plastic surgery will respond with their experiences and you can always do a search on the forum.
  7. I knew it was coming and yet it still bothers me. Now that my weight hasn't gone down (and I actually gained a pound) in the last 2 days, I'm going to not weigh myself for at least a week. I'm just going to keep doing what I'm doing, keep exercising, keep watching what I eat, and try not to think about it too much. It's not easy, because of course it bothers me that my progress is stopping, but I can't let it get my anxiety going. So....fun times....
  8. I suffer from body dysmorphia too. I'm under goal weight and still feel huge. Physically it does feel great. I don't feel tired walking long distances or going up stairs. Stretching and working out is so much easier, my comorbities are gone but my head is where the problem is. I still see myself as someone who needs to lose a lot of weight. I will stand next to someone who is heavier than me, and not see them as fat at all. It's all how I see myself.

    We cant tell you that. Every program and insurance have their own requirements. So you need to check to see what yours is. BUt very doubtful. Wear a weight belt when they weigh you lol
  10. At one time, I was highly interested in FatLossTroubleShooter. I listened to her podcasts and was inspired to lose weight. I also, of course, use bodybuilding.com as a guide to exercise, nutrition, and just how to take care of your body.

    June Surgery Date

    I've already kind of started with soft food only and liquids for breakfast and lunch. A d I definitely am getting in 64 ounces of water or more a day. I was already planning g on doing liquid for at least 1 week before my surgery date. So I think I'll be ok (hopefully). My main concern is that even though I'm walking and dieting, I'm still going up and down on my weight. 1 day I'll be at 244 the next day I'm back up to 250. It's just frustrating.     Your BMI is up there at 47ish. I would think you would be on a 1 week liquid diet but your surgeon knows best. I sure dont lol. But just because your surgeon said 1 day. Does not mean you cant do a week if you want and get a jump start on your weight loss... I have seen some on here start their pre op diet a whole month in advance. (which is not easy)
  13. I doubt it. It's using electrical signals from your legs and can't accurately predict your trunk, so just 3% off is pretty good. I have a DEXA scan every three months and that's what I use (and, oddly, since I lost weight, the DEXA scan is within 0.5% bodyfat of the little throwaway hand-held electrical impedance thing every single gym has.)

    that all depends on your BMI and surgeons. Some do only 1 day. Some do none, Some do 1 week or 2 weeks or a month. The whole point of it is to shrink your liver. Many of us who are overweight have lots of fat around our liver, But not everyone. What is your weight and height?

    All this stuff is true. I would however like to give a male point of view. Men who are obese are not "given a pass" as some like to say. I too thought it was more accepted until I lost 100 pounds and it is amazing how differently people treat me since I am now skinny. I am asked if I need help more quickly in department stores, I am addressed more quickly in car dealerships or whatever environment I show up to. I am treated more politely at the doctor/dentist office and the list goes on. The weight discrimination is there for men too.
  16. Hey, friends! It’s already too hot in Atlanta, so I decided to join a gym and start using the treadmill, elliptical, and stationary bikes. My doctor has cleared me to use all of those and do some light weights (general rule of no lifting 15+ stands). I’m 4 weeks out from surgery as of yesterday and figured this first stall would be a good time to switch things up. So yesterday I had my consultation that gyms generally force new members into. Explained my situation and told him what my plan was. Next thing I knew, he had me on a balance ball lifting a dumbbell (5-10 lbs) behind my head. It wasn’t super difficult, I had no trouble keeping up or breathing. Even had me do the ropes and some step-ups, both felt fine. But now, after the fact, I’m paranoid that I overdid it. It was less than 30 minutes of continuous activity. I feel a little different in my abdominal area, but how do I know if I’ve damaged my stomach or it’s just average post-workout discomfort? Anything I should look out for? Thanks. This surgery has turned me into such a hypochondriac! 😄

    I’m 13 days post op and I too want to work out (re: lift weights) so bad! But alas, I’ve always been a rule follower to a T so until the magic 6 week mark, I’m walking the dogs 🐕 🤣

    Yep, sit on your proverbial hands until you're physically cleared, otherwise you'll injure yourself and set yourself back even longer. Even though I was patient, at 4 months out I started the None 2 Run program and screwed up my knee, which is still giving me grief at almost 8 months out. And I weighed less this time than I did when I did the same program way back before surgery when I last lost weight the old-fashioned way. So I was not only nursing an injured knee, but confused as hell as to why a lighter me couldn't nail the program like I did when I was heavier! But the answer is easy - I lost a lot of strength in the pre-surgery months when I was at my absolute heaviest. Everything hurt, so my activity was almost non-existent). Post-surgery recovery took a long time, and I lost even more tone during those weeks. So I bruised the bone jogging on weak leg muscles. So now I concentrate on the gym, doing low impact cardio and weight training to build strength. My partner and I had to run the other night to catch a show we were running a little late for. The run was fine on the night, but the next day, my knee was tender again. I want desperately to run, but may have to accept that it's going to take some time with physio to do it. So small steady steps. Enjoy the other small victories as they come. The process is a long-haul.

    That's awesome. I had mine the 13. I gained weight because I was so swollen. It's is starting to come off. I gained 6 lbs and now I am down those 6. Can't wait for next week and walking more to see how much I will use.
  20. Your rate of loss always slows as you get closer to your goal weight. You can always depend on that. The heady high rates of loss you experience at the beginning don’t last. You can also stall any number of times along the way. The small weight gain you are seeing at the moment could be related to your health issues or it could be your natural weight fluctuation becoming more noticeable as you get closer to your goal. It could also be your body resettling after your holiday loss & getting you back to where you would have been without the holiday. I’d go for option D - stop panicking & let your body catch up & I’d also add wait for your health to improve. Doesn’t hurt to do a check of your food choices, portion sizes, calories, protein & fluid intake, etc. Though you may be currently struggling with food, there may be something you are missing or could tweak to keep you closer to your plan.   21. Look at the variety of women’s body shapes. Long or short waisted, large or small breasts, higher or lower waist to hip ratio, broader or narrower shoulders, length of legs, … How can we expect a set of standardised measurements & sizes to fit every body shape perfectly? But we do. Clothing sizes are erratic even within the same brand. Some of it relates to the cut & style of the clothing. I’m an Australian size 6 in skinny jeans but a 4 in wide legged jeans. There’s even discrepancies in the same item of clothing in the same size which I think has to do with mass production. It’s one of the reasons I dislike buying clothing online - it’s a crap shoot around sizing even with ‘size guides’. Also sizes have changed over the years - they’ve subtly got larger. Some of it’s for vanity including the I weigh 20lbs more but am still a size 10 so I must be ok type of vanity. Vanity is why US sizes now have size 0 & 2. I also remember reading an article a few years ago about bra sizes being adjusted to allow for more women going to the gym & their backs getting broader from doing weights. I always find it amusing that I’m generally an Australian size 6 in pants, dresses, shirts, etc. but wear size 10 knickers. There’s no consistency.     OMG I feel this in my soul!!!!! That's why I only told my mom (and of course my husband and kids) and they were all very supportive. And still are. Once I hit 2 weeks post op, I told others. And I detailed the pain, the appointments, the dietary restrictions, the exercise requirements, the "testing new food to see what you like or what hurts to eat", etc... I basically did a word vomit on them and they were like "oh wow, I had no idea it was so painful and involved!" Well, duh. Of course you didn't. You're a size 6 and can eat anything you want and not gain weight lol If you aren't me, and if you haven't walked in my shoes, then of course you wouldn't know. That's why I just educated you AFTER the fact, because I don't need unsolicited advice or platitudes or negativity. I said what I said, I did what I did, and now it is what it is.

    Keto Diet

    Not imo. It works for some people but I think you need a certain psychology around food I just don't have...not to mention guts of steel haha I did keto like 2 years ago in one of my many pursuits to lose weight. I had diarrhea every single day all the time. I did lose 10 lbs in 3 weeks but when I stopped, I gained it all back plus more! Not my proudest moment.     Keto Diet

    Years before I had VSG, I tried the keto diet. Gained 7 lbs. in one week, so I went off it. I am almost 2 years post-op and do not use the word “diet” for myself, as diets have always failed me. I eat intuitively and so far, it seems to be working for me.

    Super happy but a bit confused

    Clothing sizing has absolutely changed over the years. I am roughly the same weight now as I was in high school, but definitely NOT the same size. Additionally the size I'm wearing now fits completely different than it did the last time I was this size! I try really hard not to get too caught up in sizes. They are so arbitrary! It can be a little bit of a mind game.
