  2. Hello all! I had a band to sleeve revision on 12/20. I'm advanced to soft foods. I am currently down 34 pounds. My concern is that I can't have more than a few small bites of food. The nutritionist says I should have 2-3 oz of Protein in each meal and 2 oz of vegetables. Yeah right! I can maybe have about an oz. of protein and I'm done. I can eat things like Greek yogurt and pudding with no problem. I remember my surgeon telling me on more than one occasion that he gave me a very small conservative sleeve. He said I should be get a lot of restriction. no kidding! Has any one had a similar experience? Does it get better? As of now, I truly not getting enough calories or protein. Thanks. 3. I had the lapband for 5 years and after complications, I had revision to sleeve (12/28/74). With the lapband I lost 80 pounds so it did help but now with sleeve I have lost only 9 pounds in a month. Yesterday was my 1 month check up (few days early) and both the Dr and myself were disappointed at the weightloss (1 pound in 2 wks)... I have been on the soft food stage and exercising as much as I can fit into my schedule. I do cardio throughout the day (kinder teacher so we dance and exercise to learning songs) and then walk 1-2 miles after school depending on when I can leave. Then go get my children from daycare, get home by 6pm, cook dinner, get bathes and kids ready for bed. Anyone else not losing much with sleeve after revision? Dr wants me to go back to drinking mainly Protein drinks in order to lose more weight. I have to lose more by end of May, beginning of June b/c that is when we plan on fixing my incisional hernia. (He wants 100 pounds lost before surgery).
  4. Umm... what? Yes they do? It's normal for them to stretch to some capacity as you get further out from surgery. If it's stretched too much, some have had to have revisions done. It just can never stretch back out to what your stomach was once before. But if you fall into the old habit of overeating constantly, it will stretch. @@ryan_86 4oz isn't a whole lot with how far out you are, but I also know everyone is different. Sometimes I can eat 3oz of something and be stuffed, other times I can eat 6oz and be content. Snacking is okay as long as you're making smart choices. I limit myself to one snack per day, usually during a stretch of time where I go the longest in between meals. When I do snack, it's typically vegetables or something whole grain and nutritious (I personally limit these because carbs are my mortal enemy).
  5. I'm getting sleeved Thursday afternoon and I really, really want to do this right the first time. I don't want to have to have a revision, etc. I know that people lose more weight more quickly if they are male or have extremely high BMIs, but I don't fall into either of those categories. So I'm looking for tips and success stories from other women who got the sleeve when they were around 40 BMI. I only need to lose 80-90 pounds, but I don't want to get stuck only losing a few pounds per month like I hear others complaining about. Thanks! Sent from my Nexus 5X using the BariatricPal App
  6. Hi Trishb! I wanted to share my experience with you - one month post op, the good, bad and ugly (sort of so far) The Good. Dr Gagner is a consummate professional, and so are his staff. He takes the time to listen to your concerns and answer your questions. His staff are responsive (within a couple of days at the most). To date, I healed well and only faced my first test today with nasty acid reflux...hopefully its not a recurrence. The Bad. I didst realize the clinic in which the operation was performed was in a commercial building with a shopping centre. That threw off , but I was pretty determined to go through this. I think in another lifetime I would have run away lol. Its a major surgery and you should ideally be in a hospital. I didn't receive any post-op/discharge instructions re warning signs of complications. Dr Gagner discussed them with me over the phone, when I returned to Ontario - but I had to intiate the request for information... It's rather expensive when you start piling on the hotel costs/travel costs/and other expenditures - considering we can be completely covered through OHIP for the same procedure. The Ugly. Long-term aftercare, or heck even short term! There is mental health side to weight loss surgery and I can't stress how important its for you to feel that you can schedule an appointment with your surgeon, and his team and meet him next week/month or whatever the case. I can only speak to Dr. Gagner on the phone, and I didnt' realize how important after-care is...the OHIP program offers weekly support groups managed by psychologist and nutritionists and follow up for five years! You can't join these support groups if you had the surgery has self-pay. So we're kinda on our own. Second, I started to really be concerned about how I manage complications long term - such as strictures..I am lucky to have a family doctor familiar with the procedure...but there are untold advantages of going directly to your surgeon and his capacity to refer you to a known professional for whatever treatment is required. . I am very lucky to live near a Bariatric Centre of Excellence (Humber Hospital) so if I have a complication, I will head to the ER. But I will have to always explain my story and lack that team based support. I completely understand your need to jump in! and not wait - but there is something precious about that wait-time that I only understood afterwards - this is a significant permanent change in your life. That wait-time prepares you for the challenges ahead and it can get very intense! I found that Dr. Gagner, explained the procedure well, stats on the main complications - however, there was no mention of the fact that GERD (acid reflux) can be so bad for some patients who acquire it post-op that they need to be revised to Gastric Bypass. I heard several stories on Facebook groups and instagrams. He essentially told me that a few # of people develop acid reflux, but you can easily take meds for it and generally resolves it self. I am finding that's not always the case - because its not diet related...its the mechanical problem - the sleeve is a high pressure system and folks either immediately get severe acid reflux or develop it over time. There were no mention that most surgeons now recommend that you do not take NsAIDs - advil etc w/ the sleeve as it can cause ulcers and damage the stomach. There was no mention that long-term some people suffer like teeth decay due to the body's incapacity to absorb Calcium appropriately. I am not sure he's Vitamin list is necessarily the most extensive...most surgeons recommend B12 supplements, but his nutritionist does not...and calcium is on a as need basis. I wish you the best on your journey, and I urge you not to discount the importance of local medical support

    Sleeve or Bypass

I am also trying to decide between bypass and sleeve. I'm leaning towards bypass for a few reasons. 1. I have a band that will be coming out in 2 weeks. It worked for a little while but It quit working for me and I have gained all Of my weight back. I want something long term. Bypass is the gold standard. It's been around and shown success longer than any other WLS. The sleeve is the latest and greatest (like the band was 6 years ago when I got placed.) The sleeve hasn't been around as long to show those long term results. 2. I have/had issues with acid reflux, and sleeve can increase those issues. In all honesty, The biggest thing for me is Long term success. I don't want to go through all of this again---weight regain and trying to go through revision bc of a failed WLS procedure. 8. . I'm in toronto, but travelled to Montreal to dr Christou because mine was a revision (more complex) from a band. And dr Christou is very experienced with revisions

    Sleeve vs. other surgeries

Lap-band is becoming a less and less popular option. The rate of late complications and revisions is very high and getting higher as more people are further out and experiencing slippage, erosion, and other late complications requiring revision. For me the choice was between bypass and sleeve and it was an easy one. Here are my reasons for not choosing bypass: I had a low enough BMI that I didn't feel such a "drastic" option was necessary. I hated the idea of my intestines being rerouted. The more joins in the intestines, the more opportunity for leaks. I really hated the idea of the "old" part of my stomach being left in my body where it might develop ulcers or cancer and be unaccessible with a normal endoscopy. I didn't like the idea of malabsorption. While it makes the weight loss go more quickly, weight LOSS is a tiny fraction of the journey. A WLS patient spends the VAST majority of their journey in maintenance. Why should I risk Vitamin deficiencies for the rest of my life just to reach goal a couple months quicker? I didn't like the idea of dumping. Yes, it might act as a deterrent for eating sweets, but I wanted to be able to eat sweets once in a while still. Plus, it would be silly to RELY on it, since not every bypass patient experiences it. I wanted to retain the use of my pyloric valve. It helps hold food in the stomach longer and the idea of my pyloric valve still being inside me, attached to my "old" stomach and opening and closing based on signals from my "new" stomach honestly weirded me out. I was self-pay and sleeve was simply cheaper.

    Anyone in Missouri?

i'm in O'Fallon,MO.Sleeved in 2011.Revision to bypass due to acid reflux Nov. 22 2016.28 lbs down.
  11. Yes they did revise it to a gastric sleeve. But apparently I'm still in cramping and pain. It is sometimes there.. and sometimes not there. I mean there are pros and cons to having the surgery. I can definitely feel something is wrong.

Not losing weight 1 year banded

Can't help you with the sugar you'll need to stop that and follow your diet plan, but maybe you need to try a bit more fill, smaller increment than last time. The band worked for me for 4 years and then caused me a lot of issues so I ended up revising to RNY.

Need Advice for Weight Loss Surgery

I had the sleeve in Nov 2011 and had a revision to mini gastric bypass in March 2016. I needed the revision because my sleeve had stretched and I had a lot of acid reflux. I originally lost 88 pounds with the sleeve but then regained about 36 pounds. I wish I had done the rny or mini bypass from the start and only needed one surgery. Having gone through two surgeries I would never recommend the sleeve to anyone. I've talked to too many people that had to have a revision. But ultimately it's your decision and whatever your surgeon recommends. Good luck.

    Spouse helping

Not my spouse but I stayed with my mom for the two weeks after my surgery. What helped me was having all my "food" in one place on the counter and one shelf in the fridge. She also would go on my walks with me and that was super nice. Also, helping to remind your wife to eat and drink on schedule. It isn't easy but the reminders are nice. I needed help getting up and out of bed for the first week as well as taking showers and going to the bathroom. Lastly, because I went to bed so much earlier, I was sleeping 12-14 hours per night post surgery, mom would tuck me into bed. It just felt nice to be cared for. After the first week, I was much more independent! Hope this helps! Katy W- Louisburg, NC Lapband revision to VSG with DS HW- 297 Weight at Surgery-279 CW- will update at two week appt

    Returning to work

Wow cant afford that long! Man im have to tlk to my surgeon! Sent from my LG-K540 using the BariatricPal App After my lap band surgery. I went back in one week. I'm a vet tech. I'm on my feet all day in and out of cages. Bending into lower cages. At the time I was a little sore and I managed to avoid lifting any animals over like 25#. I absolutely cannot afford to be out for a long time. I'm planning on revising to the sleeve. Cross my fingers I could have surgery if I get approved end of February/beginning of March. I plan on taking maybe 10 days off. I'm not one who is able to stay at home. I remember by day 4 I was bored crazy last time. I probably was lucky since I didn't have lasting pain. Day one I was like wtf did I do I'm dying? Day 2 I was like ok not so bad, and say 3 I only took pain meds because I had bad cramps. After that I may have taken one or two doses of tyelenol. I imagine the pain will be the same this time.

  18. I was so excited to go under the knife 2 weeks ago for my band to sleeve revision. My surgeon told me there would be a 15% chance that he would only take out the band, if there was too much scar tissue he wouldn't be able to do the sleeve in the same surgery. Unfortunately, I was in the 15%. I woke up and was utterly disappointed. Now I have to wait 3 months to let my stomach heal from all the inflammation that was where my band was. The surgeon said he "feels pretty confident" he can still do the sleeve. Has anyone gone through this? I'm just so down about all of this, and of course all I want to do is overeat. :-(

    Weightloss Agents - BEWARE!

Hi Cherlyn I can understand all of these things you posted. Now I had my RNY in Coos Bay, Oregon July 2, 2013. I had a pretty easy time. But I started having trouble with Strictures right away. I ended up having 5 endoscopes with 3 dialations with my Suregon, but he treated me like I was a "PROBLEM". He even called me and my Husband "PROBLEM CHILDREN". I changed to a different Bariatric Center for my last one. That was Jan of 2015. Now for my hubby's story. He had the Lap Band for 13tyears and lost 100#'s but he still had a lot of weight to lose. His Band malfunctioned, so he went to the same Dr as I did. When they went in to remove the Band and revise him to the RNY. His Band had eroded into his liver so they were unable to do the revision. So fast forward to him seeing another Dr in Portland Oregon. (that is where I transfred to) they wanted him to lose 25#'s before his RNY surgery, which isn't bad except he is diabetic and they wanted his A1C down to a 7 along with his weight loss. He couldn't do both it was lose the weight and then his BS would be out of control again. In the mean time we find out that he has Cancer on his kidney. It could not be taken care of because of his size. So we went to Juraez Mexico. Thru BELITE WEIGHT LOSS GROUP. We had bad care there. The language barrier, the nurses didn't wash their hands only one nurse used hand Santizior. He ended up not getting the RNY because of scar tissue from the 1st surgery. ( I also forgot an important side of this, he got infections from his 1st botched revision and almost died. he was so sick and ended up with a wound vac for 4 months all in all he was sick for 9 months and 3 months he don't remember) So due to him having a different surgery

    very disappointed

I'm so sorry to hear this. I was revised from a band to a sleeve on Jan 16th so this especially breaks my heart. I was told there was a chance I would wake up to news like this. I thought long and hard about whether I would have the nerve to go through another surgery if this was the case. I know you realize it's safety first and certainly don't want to take risks that could jeopardize your long term health. I will say this about us as a group. We are warriors. This is not the easy way out. It's hard emotionally, physically and socially. Your health is worth it. Your happiness is worth it. Right now you need to heal physically and then figure out how you will get to where you want to be. Sometimes it helps to think that things were meant to happen for a reason (like the 5 wasted years I spent with my band). Maybe going into surgery 50 lbs lighter is how you will end up being completely successful in your journey. I sincerely wish you all the luck in the world don't stop fighting! 21. I was sleeved in 2011.The had a really bad cough that wouldn't go away.Dry cough. It was acid reflux.I didn't have the normal symptoms.I had revision to bypass Nov 2016.No meds helped with my reflux.Dr said the only way to get rid of it.
  22. This where I am right now too. I have my first appointment with the doctor in 2 weeks. I though for sure I wanted the sleeve (seemed less invasive, less traumatic to the digestive process, and I don't like the idea of possible vitamin issues, anemia, etc.). However, i didn't realize that if you have reflux that the sleeve is not the best option. I learned that in the seminar I had to attend before I could move on in the process. That's a concern for me because I also don't want to have a revision but the idea of bypass really makes me more nervous. What to do???
  23. I'm so excited my surgery is Jan 24th I am getting the gastric bypass, I had the lap band in 2012 and did pretty good lost 100 pounds kelp it off until I had to have my band removed in 2014 because of severe acid reflux, so it's now 3 years after and I have gained on my weight back plus some, finally got approved for revision from band to gastric bypass, I am so ready for my new life changes, will be posting my journey as it goes, I love this site it helps a lot with questions I've had and know I will have so many more, good luck to everyone having are have had weight lost surgery, we deserve to live healthy and feel good about ourselves!! 24. Let me start with saying the band is the MOST invasive surgery, not the least because the complication rate is so high (around 50%) that you could require more surgeries...that is my definition of pretty invasive. I can can post a link to a whole host of those studies if you would like, I had to have my band removed and revised to rny. I chose rny because it is the gold standard been around for decades and proven to work. Sleeve hasn't been around for 10 years yet, so after my mistake of using the band when it was still new...wasn't gonna do that again. Also I developed acid reflux from the band and I knew the sleeve could make it worse and rny often cures it. Also I liked the extra insurance with malabsorption...most sleevers don't dump, the majority of rnyers do with the rny. I liked that it was insurance should I make bad food choice. I don't ever plan have another bariatric surgery. Both sleeve and rny require additional Vitamins. I like the Patches..easy to use and don't know they are there. Having said all this the sleeve is getting close to the 10 year mark and looking like a good alternative to rny. It was my backup if the band had done too much damage and an rny couldn't be done.

    My lap band journey

Hey great news! Are you going to have it removed only or a revision? And if so what are you having done! I meet with the nutritionist the end of the month. I have been gaining weight since they took all the Fluid out of my band. Being able to eat bread and not throw every meal up has given me a free for all to eat! Have to slam on the breaks and start eating healthy again! Update me when you can! Congrats and prayers! Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
