  1. I don't think I ever had the weight gain from the short time I was on IV fluids in the hospital...but a friend had told me not to weigh myself the first few days I was home...I am 6 days out today, and I am down 9 lbs since surgery day...most of the gas and bloating is gone but not all...my biggest thing is that I am occasionally getting that heavy feeling in the center of my chest between my breasts--sort of like indigestion or gas pains...my dr gave me a script for Prevacid which I might try--has anyone else tried that? Like whodatcat, I am not sure if what I am experiencing is acid-reflux related or true hunger
  2. i had a complete hysterectomy in october and having been struggling with losing, more like lack of losing, since then. more so then before to say the least. i am wondering if anyone else has experienced this. my doc says its normal, but i wanna hear experiences from other bansters. i am really freaking out about it. i am on a replacement hormone, estradial (sp?). when having the hysterectomy, i figured i would gain some, but not like this. and i didnt think it would be so hard to lose. i have gained 15 lbs since surgery. its killing me.
  3. I know you posted months ago and I hope that you figured out what was right for you. I'm replying here (so many months later) because your stats are almost identical to mine (I'm 5'7") and after much consideration, I decided to get the sleeve done (out of pocket because my BMI is 31 without health issues) on Nov 30th. For the comment above about "have you tried everything," I get that question, but I think it's unwarranted. Because this is an elective surgery for me (and I assume for the OP) getting here has not been a flippant decision. Just like people who are more obese, this is often our last choice too. Why should I wait to get more obese when the writing is on the wall--slow steady weight gain without success in losing. What I do know is that I have to pay out-of-pocket currently but I do believe that in the near future, surgery for low BMI candidates will become more common (if you believe the medical journals). I think that most of the hesitation for insurance companies is money (duh). There are places here in the states that do the surgery on low BMI patients as there are places in Mexico, Europe, and India. Just do your research because only you and your doctor can determine if this is right for you.

    Binging prior to surgey

So I'm in the process of getting my tests and evaluations done before I have surgery. I will not be able to talk to a surgeon until I've had a psych evaluation and a nutrition consult. At first, I seemed to be okay. I accepted the fact that I would not be able to eat as much food and I am slowly coming around to the concept of not being able to drink with meals. But this evening I could not stop myself from binging. I'm scared about not having half my stomach. I'm scared about the long term effects of the surgery (including leakage, hunger pains, cravings, Vitamin deficiancies) and possible weight gain. I'm 29 years old and i'm 5'7 and fluctuate between 285lbs and 293lbs. Has anyone else had this problem of binge eating?

    I Honestly Am Scared...

I can't speak to whether you've stretched your sleeve, as I'm only a couple of weeks out myself. But as someone who had a complete thyroidectomy earlier in the year, and has had several periods of time where I was hyperthyroid while they try to get my synthroid straightened out, I can promise you that not everyone who is hyperthyroid loses weight. In fact, each time I was hyperthyroid, I gained a lot of weight (7-10 lbs) within a few days. Totally unfair, considering that losing weight is the ONLY benefit of being hyperthyroid, right? I know of others who've had weight gain as a result of being hyperthyroid as well, and it certainly makes you crazy hungry (mentally, not so much physiclally. I'd bet once you get that under control, all will return to normal.
  6. I don't think it's ever too soon to plan against future weight gain. My eyes are still bigger than my stomach and it's an ingrained habit to monitor my intake. It's doesn't have to be a chore or hassle, it's just part of my life. The benefits of keeping tabs on my calories far outweigh the effort it takes to monitor my eating habits. “Once you understand that habits can change, you have the freedom and the responsibility to remake them. Once you understand that habits can be rebuilt, the power of habit becomes easier to grasp and the only option left is to get to work.” – Charles Duhigg
  7. Those of us that were Morbidly Obese, are all depressed. It's a Hormonal thing, where everything is out of whack. Once you lose weight, and your Body gets back together, you lose the Depression that is do to weight gain. Any other type of Depression ? I can not comment on.
  8. I don't know you so take what I say as not critical of you personally. I see so many people come to the forum with absolutely no knowledge of how our bodies lose weight and I mean, knowledge about their own body. Each of us will lose differently but it seems like many have never been on a diet that requires daily or weekly weigh-ins? Many are shocked that they can gain 1-5 lbs in one day? Many believe that the weight(fat) automatically falls off as soon as the band is placed? Our bodies contain fat, muscle, bone, organs and lots of water(LOTS). Obese people can retain 40+ lbs of Water depending on their height and weight. The early stages of any diet or WLS forces our bodies to shed many of those lbs or gallons of water stored in our fat cells. So, the weight loss is primarily water early on. Sure, some weight loss is losing fat, but losing fat is all part of the calories in and calories burned math equation. Losing fat is the goal and of course any weight loss be it fat or water is good. Weight gains at this point in your journey are normal until your body sheds most of the excess fluids retained in your fat cells. IMO 6 weeks out is when you can really start burning excess fat. Until then, it's mostly water loss. tmf
  9. Weight 222.5 (sad but still down 7.5 pounds) was told the weight gain/lack of weigh loss is normal Turns out I had 1 cc in my band and they added 3 ½ so I have a total of 4 ½ and my band hold 10 cc The actual access the port was much more painful then acceding the medi port I had in my check for chemo. So numbing meds as I am a tough new Yorker cancer survivor (just in general I think when they hear you have had cancer that you are very strong and don’t need any minor stuff like numbing cream ect) After had to drink a cup of Water to be sure I didn’t throw up Went down fine and stayed down. I was hungry before the fill but after not at all My stomach was growling later in the evening but I was not hungry at all Had ½ an ensure (by the time I had dinner it was after 9pm and I didn’t want to have too much food in my stomach) but I was good didn’t wake up in the middle of the night starving like I have been On liquids for 2 days then mushies for 2 then normal food Feeling real psyched for this let the weight loss begin
  10. I started going to the gym on Monday after several years of sitting and I've done nothing but gain both days! Almost 3 lbs now! Am I missing something? Is this normal?

    Rats!!!

I didn't have any weight gain but I know I've stayed away from the broths/canned soup as much as possible. Calorie wise you think you're doing good and then, bam, you've taken in a million grams of sodium. If you're close to any soup restraurants, that would be great...a hale n hearty is wonderful...still have sodium but not as much as canned, just what they put in to cook with, not the preservative. I don't have one where I live, but next time in NYC, I will buy a bunch up and freeze. good luck!! Trisha

    Well HELLO Sprout

You look fab! You definitely have the pregnancy glow! I think it's great that you're not worrying about the weight gain and extra food intake. Gotta do what's best for "sprout"! Good luck to you as you continue through your pregnancy!
  13. I have type II diabetes and was banded on Oct. 7th. I was able to go off of all of my diabetes medicines about 1/2 week into the pre-op liquid diet and am now a little over two weeks post-op and my blood sugars are rising. 145 this morning and 215 about 2 hours after breakfast. I think I am going to have to go back on some medicines, but hate to do it cause they promote weight gain. I was hoping that I could stay off of the meds altogether, I see my physician next Tuesday 10/28 and am afraid she will put me back on all of them again! Anyone else have the same problem?

    Diabetes and Lap Band

Yes, I'm told that insulin causes weight gain. that's why I'm so upset. I was not on insulin and my sugars were in control... now everything is out of wack and I'm on 2 types of insulin. How are you taking the metformin? My dosage was 1000 2 times a day... Can you cut them in half or quarters?
  15. Dawn: It's funny how you and I were sleeved nearly the same day, and go through so many similar things at the same time. I'm about 9 days into a stall where I fluctuate losing and gaining the same pound. I weigh myself daily, religiously, at the same time. I disagree with not weighing daily. I wrestled in college, and if I didn't weigh daily, I would have never made weight. My weight-gains always coincided with a lack of wanting to see the proof on the scale. The scale provides accountability. I think its more how you react to the information, then the fact that you gather the information. About the stall, I feel great too, and I've STILL (sadly) have not started a regular work out routine. And I must admit that this week I had a LOT of work, so it was more hours with my butt in the chair, than other weeks where I've been traveling, having to walk a lot in the field, etc. So perhaps behavior (i.e. diet and [lack of] exercise) have something to do with the stall, but alternatively, it might be a bit of our bodies playing catchup. I know that relative to 3 weeks ago, I'm thinner, because I can only wear a pair of 35 inch pants that were a bit tight just 3 weeks ago. So, I have to cut myself some slack. At the same time, I'm about 25 pounds from being somewhere where I'd be comfortable stopping and maintaining. So, let's hope that we break out of this rut soon. I'm starting a gym tomorrow, so we'll see if that helps! Matt

    False scale readings?

Your body weight will fluctuate by several pounds on a daily basis. Many things can cause this fluctuation such as water weight gain, the clothes you wear, the time of day. Generally I weigh myself first thing in the morning, butt naked before breakfast. This tends to be my lowest weight. My clothes, coats and shoes can add 5 pounds to my weight. So generally the weight at the doctor's office is higher. The problem may also be due to your scale. After I had surgery, my scale was giving me all types of bad readings. I would step on the scale and weight myself and then repeat a couple seconds later and get a totally different reading, sometime a 5 pound difference. So I replaced my scale with one that was accurate to 0.2 pounds, repeatable readings, and a large visible backlit digital reading. I am half blind and since I weigh myself with my glasses off, it was difficult to step off the scale and bend down and read the results before the scale went off. Some digital scales will give erratic readings when the batteries are low.
  17. Yes, there is approval to go through. Your first stop is to a wl surgeon and tell them if U have any acid reflex, weight gain, throwing up, etc. it was nice at my surgeons office they have the machine that you can watch swallow test. I went back cause I started gaining weight and discovered my esophagus was dilated and would require the band be removed. The scope was next to see what the band and everything looks like. After that it was submitted to insurance. I hope this helps.
  18. Sorry it took me so long to get back on here. Where in Cali are you originally from?? It is definatley something to get used to being all the way over here. I am from Sacramento, and miss my home too. But if i never came here, then i might have never known about the surgery. Wow, thank you for telling me about being denied for surgery if you gain even one pound on the supervised diet. I think thats crazy but understand. Have you lost any weight on your diet yet? and if so, how much. I was just trying to compare progress, even though i have pretty much made NONE!! lol But at the group meetings, they don't talk about weight gain during the program. I would have never known until i came upon this site. Well i hope you have a great Thanksgiving!!!!!
  19. Woah buddy!! I go from perfectly fine one minute to "duhhhh" the next, to "get the heck out of my 1 mile personal space bubble NOW!!" In no time flat. Took a shower to go to the family Easter get together and in the last hour have decided I'm just not going. I don't have energy to put forth toward being smiley with everyone and I don't have to!! What the heck!? I know the hormonal changes during weightloss make a person crazy. Add on top of that that I'm a female and dang!! I really wasn't expecting this. Are there tips to keep this under control? Might call about an anti depressant tomorrow. Maybe. Are there antidx that don't have weight gain as a common side effect?
  20. I am curious how often you weigh yourself and what if you see the scale go up, what do you do? I officially weigh in on Monday's and last week I gained 1 lb. So I've been very careful with food and have been going to the gym each day and been feeling Great! SO I've been watching the scale. I went down on Tue and then up by 2lbs on Wed and back down 1lb today? I know that we shouldn't weigh everyday but it's so hard to not watch where I'm at. I'm not really understanding why I am not losing a good number again? Can it be that after not getting in enough Protein for almost a whole week and two weeks with no work outs that it will take a couple of weeks to get back on track?
  21. I was at the doctors today talking about JUST this topic... There are some definite pors and cons to this. Pros: higher chance of fertility at a lower weight healthier pregnancy, lower risk of pre-eclampsia, high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, etc Less chance of depression and weight gain issues/self-esteem etc-it is tough enough being pregnant and carrying extra weight, imagine carrying another 30-50 pounds and how you will feel? You can easily drop 30 pounds to get in a healthier weight range INSTEAD of the sleeve by joining a bootcamp/doing Jillian Michaels and following a strict diet regimen. You will have to follow a strict diet after the sleeve anyway, so it is NOT easier...you could probably do this in about 3-4 months. In reality, you will most likely lose 30-40 pounds in the same 3 months, only your TTC has to be pushed back CONS: You MUST wait 12-18 months as if you are in rapid weight loss phase, you can and will risk your health and the baby's health as you cannot take in enough calories a day and you are burning. Also, there could be issues with leaks, etc. You are at a high risk to gain the weight lost back and it would have been a waste of your time and money You do not know if you can concieve on your own and if you wait another 1-1.5 years to find out, you are then 32,33...you need to try for at least 6 months or a year Ithink (not sure) to go to a specialist, which puts you at 33-34...to have your FIRST baby. Having babies are tough on your body, and weight gain happens! My doctor said that it is riskier to have a baby overweight than to have the sleeve and get pregnant a year later> Of course, I have three little ones already and want to have my fourth...in a year If I were in your shoes, I would probably just do the diet and exercize thing, and try to make that work. Fitness is so important while you are pregnant anyway, so you are giving your body a head start, without the 6-8 week down time you will have if you get sleeved. Then, after the baby making is complete, go get your sleeve if you still need it, or maybe a mommy makeover....they offer those in Mexico for about 7K and will do up to 5 areas of your body....wooot!! Good luck with whatever you decide, it is such a personal decision and I am sending lots of baby dust your way!!!

    "Problem" areas for sleevers...

I hate hate the spare tire. I have a big one and it goes big to small. That is my weight gain spot. I struggle with skinny jeans and I can never wear thirts. There is this little pocket around my belly button that hangs and it looks gross. It makes me sooo self conscious when I am being intimate with someone that I rather lay flat in bed so it doesn't look weird. You can't tell if I am standing but if I move it wiggles. I hate it. Inner thighs.. well forget it. Nobody sees those anyways. hahaha Also, under the arm is challenging.
  23. Hi everyone - just wondering if anyone else experiences this? I think this is really the first time I've actually gained weight during my period. I generally always experience a loss before hand (which happened this time...over 3 lost pounds in the 3 days before), but I usually don't gain and this morning the scale said I was almost 2 pounds up from my lowest before my period 3 days ago. Im trying not to get stressed out but its a little upsetting...I've been doing my regular workout (cross training or 55 minutes on the elliptical and walking) and have been sticking to 950 calories or less. Any reassurance or advice is greatly appreciated!

    Band to sleeve...gaining weight

Hi this doesn't have to do with your weight gain but I am waiting for my approval. I am having my band removed as well and they are doing the sleeve. How are you feeling, compared to the band?
