    May Sleevers! Almost there!

I'm also May 1st!! Just one more day of pre op. I've done well with it during the week but the weekend was challenging. I didn't do horrible, but I don't think I'll make the 10 pounds in a week mark :/ But my starting weight (November 27, 2012) was 304, and this morning I was 262, so if I don't lose a total of 10 this week I don't care Good luck everyone!

    Almost 5 months out

I lost weight rapidly the first seven months, then I stalled...now at a yr and a half I gained 10...I need to lose 20 to reach my goal weight of 140, I don't want to be a stick figure, at 118 id look like I was a stick figure
  4. I was banded on 12/21 and I got on the scale two days later and had gained 6 pounds!! I cried!! Then I followed up with my doc 1 week post-op and I was down 7 pounds from the surgery day weight. I go up and down one to two pounds every couple days. I currently sit between 226 and 223, I'm ending my mushie stage and heading into soft food. The doc told me this is to be expected and to make sure I'm making good food choices, getting in my protein, following the diet to a tee. And, getting my exercise. He said I may even gain weight before my first fill because I haven't been eating anything of substance for weeks! So, I make sure I avoid all slider foods (and believe me I love my ice cream ) and follow the diet plan too a tee. I eat my 4 oz, and thats it. It will come off, I know, I've seen it happen. Best of luck to you!!!!
  5. If you cant get satisfaction from the bathroom scale, look for it in other areas. Start walking or running or lifting weights and set goals to either lift more or go father. Meeting those goals will help you feel some satisfaction.

    Another banded newbie

Welcome! Sorry about the bleeding trouble. I'm sure your scars will fade to nothing-much. Mine did. I had 5 incisions twice and only about three of those are visible. Don't be in too much of a hurry for that first fill, you are still healing. It's important to let yourself heal completely to avoid trouble down the road so follow your doc's instructions about exercise and foods to the letter. (please) I'd bet you will bypass your goal weight and keep going. I'm 5'7" and 150 and you are just a tiny thing. (soon to really be tiny) I'm four years out from my surgery and the best advise I can give is to be patient with the process and with yourself. You are attempting a major lifestyle change and that is SO difficult. Cut yourself a break when you falter. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and get back on the "bandwagon" without recriminations. It takes a long time to lose a pound of fat. That's a deficit of 3500 calories. Unless you workout like a mad fool, losing 1-2 lbs a week is just fine. The band really helps with the patience. It keeps you from the "oh what the heck" moments that wreck a weeks efforts. Good luck on your journey,

    Weight down = feeling fat

Have you been building sufficient muscle? Your body fat percentage might be way different than it was in high school, and that can make a huge difference with how you look at a given weight. Here's a progress pic of a woman (admittedly thin to begin with) who gained ten lb of muscle: http://i.imgur.com/uqHFK.jpg
  9. My name is Cindy. I am going to be 55 in August. I have battled weight all of my life. I have to do something as I can't live the rest of my life gaining weight. I've done all the fad diets, weight watchers and have lost weight but can't keep it off. I have probably lost and gained over 1000 pounds in my life time. My insurance won't cover the surgery. Self pay around here is about $22,000. My daughter had the bypass a few years ago. I went to meetings and have watched her so i know what I am up against. I have told my 2 kids and they were skeptical at first, but my one daughter is getting married the end of August and wants to help me pick out a dress I have been researching, reading, looking at youtube videos for a few months now. I chose Dr Kelly at the Florence Hospital. I liked his credentials and the hospital, the number of surgeries performed and success rate. . This morning I took copies of all the paper work and credentials etc to my pcp. He is a big health nut. He organized a program for our town to lose weight and a walking program too. He looked over all of my paperwork and had a few questions. I told him my husband is on board and when I quit smoking he smoked elsewhere till he quit himself. This will be good for him also. He is very supportive. The doc said to go for it. That the benefits outway the risks and wants to see me 1 month post op. I'm so happy for this. He wasn't skeptical at all. I sent in my paperwork this morning. I really don't see any problems and hope to schedule real soon. I was nervous at first, but am so excited...especially since I have all those blessings.

    Pre-op diet

I was on a liquid diet for 2 weeks pre op.. optifast 4 small juice boxes of it a day and a optifast bar. I was really worried about it because I was afraid I would be hungry and fail.. But I wasn't hungry on it.. it was fine. I did get a little hungry the second week and called the nutritionist and she allowed salad with balsamic vinegar and 3oz of tuna a day that really helped. It was not as bad as I had worried. I just kept thinking I wanted this surgery to save my life! I could do two weeks of dieting so I wouldn't have to diet for the rest of my life! It is amazing how great I feel and you will look back and realize how easy it was. You can do it. Just remember you can do anything to be there for your kids. You will be adding years to your life by losing weight and this was my inspiration. Good luck and God bless!

  12. Most surgeons place everyone on some form of diet whether it be full liquid, high protein, low carb. My surgeon does not use any diet other than do not gain, try to lose 5-10 lbs. I am 6 wks from surgery and I am eating high protein, low carb but will also have things I know I will not be allowed to have for quite sometime.

  14. I don't know why people think this is the easy way out...it's not! It is the last resort for those of us who have struggled with every diet on the market. I had my VSG a year ago and I have never regretted it I have learned how to eat out at restaurants, although in the beginning it was very difficult. I mention this because, that is my main entertainment with friends and family. We all know that food is a major part to most people's entertainment! I have learned how painful it can be if you over eat...and now I don't. But I have to admit, on the whole this was a very easy venture for me....not all people are as lucky. Maybe your husband needs to read some of those topics. My biggest problem now....I still get hungry more often than I should.....So nothing is 100% and we still have to work on watching what we eat forever, if we wish to remain at the weight the sleeve has allowed us to get to. Good luck with your surgery, if you decide on it, and remember it is not the easy way out, nor are you copping out!

    Psych evaluation in the morning

My eval was pretty basic I answered about 1000+ questions about depression, suicide, healthy eating, support and addiction. Then I talked to the Dr. For about 10 mins he asked my highest weight, where my husband worked, if I knew I would look and feel different after the surgery and that's about it. Good luck everyone

    HELP

It's brave of you to expose yourself and be honest about what's going on. If it were me, I wouldn't tell the doctor. I had an experience recently when I was 2 days before surgery and my doctor flipped out, mainly because I didn't know to stop NSAIDS but also because I told him I had a bite of a brownie. In my case, the NSAIDS was certainly a problem, and surgery would have to be postponed a week. But his flip-out was so bad that I wasn't sure I wanted him be my surgeon. Doesn't sound like you've done all that much to be beating yourself up. And you have a whole week to turn that around. I feel for you about even doing a week-long pre-op. My plan, this second time around, is to do the absolute best I can. My doctor will know by my weight loss whether I've been dieting. You can't reduce your eating drastically and not lose weight. There are two things you should do. One is stop beating yourself up. The other is use periods to end a sentence. It's hard to figure out what you're saying when all the words run together. Good luck. Do your best, and think twice about "true confessions."
  18. I've been tracking my calories and protein the good old fashioned way...paper & pen. Calorie intake around 1100-1300 (based on dr recommendations following metabolism testing) and exercise (elliptical for an hour 5 times a week). Water intake 100oz/day. Protein intake 60-80g/day. So I see on the boards that a lot of people use & recommend myfitnesspal.com for tracking. Thought I would give it a shot....surgery was 5/4/11 and I've been stuck at 10 pounds pre-surgery loss and 10 pounds post-surgery loss (in first month and none since) and I've had one fill (that provided no restriction/hunger control). My question is....after you've entered all of your data (age, weight, goal, exercise, lifestyle) and it gives you a recommended calorie goal for the day.....who follows that and if you do, have you had success? Based on my input (lightly active) and current exercise, it recommends I eat 1950 calories a day. WHAT????? I know that what I've been doing is not dropping any pounds so I'm wondering if I should slightly eat more and meet the dr recommendation and the myfitnesspal.com recommendation in the middle and see how that goes? Needing feedback...thanks!!!!

    using myfitnesspal.com

I also use MyFitnessPal. It has helped me tremendously. I know what you mean about the amount of calories. On a day with no exercise it says I can have up to 2,230 calories day to maintain 1 1/2 of weight loss per week. If I exercise that number is almost 3000. I never get close to that number. I am not interested in losing weight really fast. I am more interested in gaining perspective of what I put into my system and keep a nice controlled weight loss. Plus I don't really want that deflated look. I am working with a nutritionist and they say it is the best way to go to keep off the lbs for good. Everyone is different though and no matter how you use it MyFitnessPal is a great product and service. You can add me on there if you like. My username is djtheeo thanks
  20. I was just curious to see how long did it take for you to start loosing weight consistently after post op? I know some people don't lose any the first 6 weeks, during the healing time. So when did the weight start coming off consistantly, was it after you first fill? Second fill? Thanks!!

    Calorie Itake?

Thank you all so much for your kind words! My excersises now consist of Monday wednesday and Friday I do an hour each of yoga, Pilates, step class(or sometimes my gym offers a basic stretch class that's really nice to take instead of step class) and then I do an hour of this really fast paced fitness class where we do a total body work out. Then on Tuesday Thursday and some Saturday's I do an hour of cardio. 30 min on bike or elliptical and 30 min on the treadmill. And then an hour of weights.
  22. I'm slipping between a hole in the cracks. I'm afraid to call my Doctor, or nutritionist.. Obviously I will call very soon.. I need to know if anyone else has had this problem.. Need Help Badly

Just go and get a fill. There's nothing to be afraid of, that's the way its SUPPOSED to work. As you loosen, you will eat more and your appetite increases. And you will get looser over time both from weight loss and evaporation. Its easy fixed.
  24. Well here goes...I was supposed to do this on 8/30 but the surgery got moved up so wow good! I am 5'1.5" and currently weigh 232 (at doc's office last week). Have been on Optifast for 7 days and I don't want to step on the scale til preop on Wednesday. Whoever made this stuff should be forced to drink it for life *lol*. Amazing that the first 3 ingredients after Water are all sugars. O well I did not die from 7 days of optifast. When I finally decided to just risk it for the biscuit so to speak was when I realized that no matter what I did my morning blood sugars were not going down and I DON'T want to be on meds for the rest of my life. I am 50 yrs old and raising my 5 yr old granddaughter. I need to be around for her for a long time. I had been looking at wls for over 6 years, but could not bring myself to band - I would feel like a beach ball with air coming in and going out! When I finally decided to do this in May I just sucked it up and decided the sleeve was what I needed. I don't want to be able to overeat. Tonight I amazed the husband by going to Boston Market and not eating. He was shocked. But I am mentally preparing myself, I wish I could do this and not have surgery but I know that at some point I will over eat again, and I know that I lose weight at 1200-1300 cals (I experimented a few months and found that at 1400 kals i GAIN weight - no matter how much I walk or run). I did not win the genetic lottery ..so this is my do - over - everyone should get at least one do-over in life! I am looking forward to drinking my homemade vege juices again. Right now I am happy, nervous, and scared. Most of all I am ready to plunge, even after viewing the video of an actual gastric sleeve *s*. Thank you for listening!

    Wow, getting excited

I had a Dr appt with my surgeons office yesterday too, and they told me to just concentrate on maintaining my current weight so I don't fall below the 40 BMI. My surgery won't be until August sometime. I originally thought it was going to be June or July, but my first "consult" with my surgeons office doesnt get counted toward the 6 month wait. )
