    Ulcers

According to the internet: Nausea and vomiting are the most common complaints after bariatric surgery, and they are typically associated with inappropriate diet and noncompliance with a gastroplasty diet (ie, eat undisturbed, chew meticulously, never drink with meals, and wait 2 hours before drinking after solid food is consumed). If these symptoms are associated with epigastric pain, significant dehydration, or not explained by dietary indiscretions, an alternative diagnosis must be explored. One of the most common complications causing nausea and vomiting in gastric bypass patients is anastomotic ulcers, with and without stomal stenosis. Ulceration or stenosis at the gastrojejunostomy of the gastric bypass has a reported incidence of 3% to 20%. Although no unifying explanation for the etiology of anastomotic ulcers exists, most experts agree that the pathogenesis is likely multifactorial. These ulcers are thought to be due to a combination of preserved acid secretion in the pouch, tension from the Roux limb, ischemia from the operation, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use, and perhaps Helicobacter pylori infection. Evidence suggests that little acid is secreted in the gastric bypass pouch; however, staple line dehiscence may lead to excessive acid bathing of the anastomosis. Treatment for both marginal ulcers and stomal ulcers should include avoidance of NSAIDs, antisecretory therapy with proton-pump inhibitors, and/or sucralfate. In addition, H pylori infection should be identified and treated, if present. So generally what this is saying is 1) stay off all NSAIDs such as aspirin and excedrin that contains aspirin. 2) use a proton pump inhibitor such as prilosec (omeprazole). My surgeon recommended I take this daily for the first year so that my stomach would heal properly. At the end of my first year I discontinued it. I am now 5 years post-op. 3) make sure you were tested for Helicobacter pylori infection. This is a very common infection, one that is somewhat hidden because of a lack of symptoms. The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily protein, fluid and vitamin requirements. Food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight. So my first concerns are not focused on food but rather to make sure you are meeting your daily protein and fluid requirements.

    Seeing the shrink

I believe all psych Evals are different depending on the place you go. At mine they had me doing random stuff like repeating a set of numbers, remembering 4 object till I was asked what they were in order, addition like 2+2 up to 198+198, a depression test, talked about why I chose the surgery I did, talked about what I’ve learned about the surgery. They just to make sure that I’m aware of all things about the surgery. And finally a 200 question bariatric test where at least my psychiatrist sent to Indianapolis to receive the results. All this took 2hrs so prepare to stay that long at most. Hope this helps
  3. I have a silly question...those of you with no weight related conditions and a low bmi...how the heck did you get approved for coverage for the surgery?!! It was such a bitch (excuse my French) for me to get covered..first bariatric group I went with got me denied..and then 2 months later I went to an extremely reputable bariatric group in my area and they got me approved..I mean every insurance company is different but some of you have seriously low starting weights..I think my insurance company would have laughed in my face if I was 5'5 and 200 lbs asking to covered for wls lol (starting weight before my surgery back in march was 256 and I'm 5'5)
  4. Im at the point where the nausea is becoming unbearable so I'll give it a try. Thanks. The doctor I saw yesterday said it might be due to acid reflux, which I'm taking a 14 day course of omeprazole and still nothing. It was a waste of doctor visit, I just got a referral to a bariatric surgeon since I didn't get the surgery in the US.
  5. Hello Everyone, I just had my gastric sleeve done on 02/28. To date so far I have lost 13 pounds in on week. I have about a 130 pounds to lose but I am happy I am on my way. I really dont have much pain. I am little slow moving around because I still have a little discomfort. The first week was a little difficult because whenever I would eat or drink I would get a bubble feeling in my chest. After reading many of the posts I started taking prilosec. It has helped tremendously! I am getting ready to start walking everyday and once I am feeling better I will start running. I am not starving but the smell of food I used to eat does attract to me but I am still staying on course. My only problem has been the Protein shakes. I was taking the Bariatric Advantage shakes but they are just disgusting to me now. I also tried the Isopure but I cant stand it. So now I am doing the Atkins and muscle Mlike shakes. At first I was having some regrets but after seeing my weight loss in the last week I am feeling much better.
  6. I went to my first appointment with the bariatric surgeon today I had my mind set on Gastric Sleeve. The surgeon says well with you being diabetic and African American I would recommend the bypass studies have shown that bypass works better for AA females. She stated that I would no longer have to take my diabetes medication. She said it's my choice but she wanted me to know the best option for me. Has anyone with diabetes been successful with the sleeve?
  7. Hi, all! I'm new to bariatric pal and my consult is August 2. I will be setting a tentative surgery date along with scheduling tests my doctor requires. I've been educating myself on bariatric surgery and gathering information for a few months now. I'm still deciding between the gastric sleeve procedure or gastric bypass. I'm a patient care technician and I started my job back in April. I don't plan on having my surgery earlier than December, but I'm worried that requesting time off for an "elective" surgery would make me look like a bad employee. I also will only have 6 PTO (I work 9 days in a two week period) days saved by then and I'm sure I'll need at least 2 weeks off. My benefits are through this employer, so I want to stay in good standing and honestly? I really love my job. I believe the most time off I will need is 3 weeks. I hope to go back in 2 weeks and light duty for 1 week. Do you guys think my employer will have an issue with requesting time off for an elective surgery? Could I lose my benefits if I'm missing those three PTO days? How do I go about this process? I just don't even know where to start.
  8. Well, firstly everyone jumps at the financial issue. I am not talking about one or two people paying for someone to have surgery. What I am talking about is opening an actual charity along the lines of "Make a wish" but for bariatric surgery. People can donate anything, even $5 to the cause. Second, I understand that most people on here are having their own surgery and all that. I myself have no insurance and no chance for financing...am trying to save up for self pay. But, there are also a lot of people on here who are years out from their surgeries. Maybe if there were organizations or charities for people like us down the line others wouldn't be having such problems like we are dealing with. But, hey if people are too busy with their own lives and all that no problem. I am not looking to start this today...but just looking for some opinons to see if it would even be worthwile...I think I got the answer. Thanks Dahlia
  9. For those who haven't been following my story............... I was diagnosed with an eroded band in November of 2011 and had it removed in March of 2012. I had to wait for six months before revising to the gastric sleeve as my surgeon wanted to wait for me to heal completely and do medical tests before confirming that I would be a good candidate for the sleeve. I have complete those tests and he was satisfied that I could have the sleeve. We also found that I had developed another hiatal hernia (the first one was repaired when I had my lap band surgery). My predetermination request for the sleeve surgery was denied. They stated that I needed to complete a six month weight loss program in order for them to consider my request. I asked my surgeon's insurance coordinator to appeal based on the reasoning that this was a repeat surgery for a lap band that had medically failed me and that I shouldn't have to complete the six month medically supervised weight loss program. She filed an appeal but no where in the letter did it address the six month weight loss program so of course they denied me again stating that we still hadn't submitted the records they had requested. Frustrated beyond belief, I took the initiative to write my own appeal letter. I used language from the BCBS-AL bariatric policy regarding repeat surgeries and their rationale for requiring the six month weight loss program and explained how I had met that rationale just by having a lap band for four years and that my waiting for six months before revising to another surgery was not conducive to improving my health. I just got off the phone with BCBS-AL and they have approved my surgery!!!!!! I am actually shocked that I succeeded in my appeal. I fully expected them to deny me and had already started the medically supervised six month weight loss program in preparation for that denial (and have lost 10 lbs over a six week period which is nice). I'm excited, relieved and nervous! I've been through this before so I don't know why but I am. I was very successful with my lap band (losing 94 lbs). I remember how wonderful it felt to be thin and feel good about myself and how I looked and not to be in pain anymore from carrying around all this extra weight (yes I packed the pounds back on after my band was removed). I can't wait to be there again! Yeah me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  10. Oh yeah.those containers of frosting from Betty Crockers is the real deal.Dip a graham cracker into that smooth chocolate frosting...Makes a Bariatric doctor have nightmares..lol.its all relative.phsychologically speaking. If you or someone you know.Abuses Betty Crockers smooth frosting. There has to be other problems in ones life causing this penchant for smooth chocolate frosting.Usually it's a lack of closeness and love.so I went out and found someone to be close to and love. Now there is no more smooth chocolate frosting in my house.problem solved

  12. This is the first major goal I've been waiting for. I'm almost halfway there now. This dress will be WAY too big when I'm done! Oh YES I did!!! Maybe we should renew our vows while it still fits! --danielle
  13. I hope I have found a renewed faith in myself that I finally will make it through. I have found that I matter to others through Bariatric Pal, I was down on ME and about to give up and die FAT when I tremblingly reached out on here, read read others stories, some had come from much worse places in life than me, they had been a success and I started to think "Frusrt8, old but, imaybe just maybe YOU can do this too. I realized many life could still be lived and lived with more joy than I was having. And even now the stories of others inspires me. And in July 2018 my RuN should occur. Scared? Shoot No,I am looking to the days counting on down. Might not be anyone else's journey but it will be mine, and in long run I still do matter so much!😛🏣👍

  16. well that says it all! I'm starting a reset tomorrow because I'm once again off track. It just seems so easy for me to derail these days. I'm working SUCH a terrible schedule right now and my sleep is totally disordered. I find myself eating around the clock some days just to stay awake at work, and am sleeping terribly because of the weight gain. I thought I was getting back on track pretty well but i'm rolling down the hill once again! Going to just get a tight grasp on my entire situation before I find myself back at my staring weight!!! Wish me luck- BTW i'm doing the 2 day reset and then the BOT scenario from Bariatric Eating.
  17. Anyone having surgery January or February 2018 at Blosom Bariatrics in Las Vegas?
  18. When my husband and I met I was overweight but since we have been married I have put on a lot of weight, He loves me anyway. He has had a lot of serious health issues that we got through together. When I first talked about having WLS he was not totally on board because he was worried about the risks but after our first visit at the Bariatric center he felt much better. He has been right by my side through it all,I had RNY on 6/24, and I do not see that changing.

    Best Multivitamin for Gastric Sleeve

The awful smell from the capsules could be because your sense of smell can become more sensitive after surgery. It is only temporary. If they still smell awful to you this far out it could just be something in the Bariatric Advantage thats more specific to you. Like the smell of ramen noodle places & Red Door perfume makes me cringe.

    Best Multivitamin for Gastric Sleeve

My nutritionist did go over a vitamin regimen with me. They recommended the Bariatric Advantage Ultra Solo w/ Iron. They also recommended that I take a calcium citrate supplement either 1x or 2x daily. She said that it depends on if I supplement with a protein shake, whether or not I need to take 1 or 2 of those.

    Molina Insurance problem

Before even me going into with Molina about bariatric surgery, I actually had an idea of what the insurance entailed and what I had to do, as a matter of fact I told the referral coordinator how to do the process, let me tell you I was well prepared. The day of referral I started dieting and exercising so I was a head of my self, so like a week later I get a call from the Molina case manager and there it began, she was amazed how much I knew, and where I was going for physical therapy and nutrition counseling, I scheduled my visits, I was approved for 12 visits in nutrition, physical therapy, and behavioral counseling. I only did 6 visits with nutrition and the other 6 will be with the surgeon, so I'm at the end of the rope, I have my surgery date, now just waiting for approval. I completed all visits but 6 for the nutritional counselor. They will only approve 12 visits for each. The problem only problem I had thus far was that the counselor I was seeing did not want to clear me for surgery so I waited two weeks for that process. It can get frustrating, but it's well worth the wait. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Need Help With Hesitation Before Surgery

I didn't have months leading up to surgery, I had been working on improving my health and losing weight for about 2-3 years before surgery. Then I moved and had to get a new Dr. This Dr did a complete workup on my and my health was just tanking. My weight wasn't going anywhere, I was developing high blood pressure in addition to the diabetes I already had. My heart was enlarged and acting abnormally (that is genetic but the weight was not helping). All of this before the age of 40. Those are all old people problems. My grandparents didn't have blood pressure issues until their 70s. No one in my family is diabetic. I come from a family of slim athletic people. All my issues boiled down to my life choices. I decided enough was enough. Surgery was my last ditch effort to improve my health. I felt like I was dying slowly anyway, and I felt the worse outcome I could have with surgery would be a faster death. I felt like I had absolutely nothing to lose. The process to get qualified for surgery because of my heart went all the way from EKG to Cardiac Cath. No one my age should have been undergoing a Cardiac Cath. The fact it was happening to me just because I was basically crushing my heart with fat was just too much. Signing those waiver forms was a pretty frightening experience. So no after that I had no fears. I also didn't have months to wait for surgery. I went from first visit to surgery in 8 weeks. I saw my new Dr for the first time in early April. Attended a bariatric seminar at the end of April. Saw the Surgeon the first time mid May, had surgery mid July. Once I decided that was the path I was on I rushed and made it go as fast as possible. If I didn't have insurance I would have self paid at that point to make it happen quickly. Post-op early on I had moments of doubt because I had low carb dieted before, lost weight but plateaued. I had moments of doubt that this would be no different. The difference is there is no quitting your diet post-op. When you stall out and are frustrated there is no ordering a large pizza and downing it with a 2 liter (even though people that post here still manage to do it). You are just kind of stuck eating the same, so you work through plateaus and you keep losing. Even by the time I had my first stall though, my health had improved so much, it was already well worth it.

    Hair loss

Here is one of the explanations I found. Much of the info I found when researching this was pretty much the same. www.drdkim.net/ask-the-dietician/understanding-hair-loss-after-bariatric-surgery/
  25. I am unsure why at your height and weight it is considered elective... Did you have a sleep study? If you turn out to have sleep apnea, which you might, it should not be considered elective. The other issue is if your insurance pays for any weight loss surgery, elective or not. Good luck. Most bariatric surgeon know how to work with insurance companies, if it is not elective it might make a difference
