I wouldn't jump into things your body isn't ready for. For one thing, I wasn't cleared to do anything other than walk for the first four weeks - and I had to wait eight weeks for strength-training. Plus you want whatever fitness routine(s) you select to be sustainable. When I was still over 300 lbs, my fitness routines consisted mostly of walking and water-related stuff (swimming and water aerobics). I can now do pretty much everything, but at that weight, some exercises were too hard on my joints. I eventually was able to do them, though. so wait until your body is ready - and pick things that are enjoyable so you'll be likely to keep up with them.

Hi, can I get a little guidance please? I had a gastric bypass 6 months ago. I've lost 4 stone so far. I've recently got back from a holiday (where I lost 6lbs) but since I got back its all gone a bit odd (see pic of weekly weigh in). I don't know if this is all normal or if I'm doing something wrong? Am I panicking over nothing? I've got some epic toilet issues (chronic diarrhoea) that Ive got a referral to gastroenterology for so there is that factor. I am also not overly concerned about protein goals, as directed by my nutritionist as my stomach is struggling with everything at the mo. I have low potassium and am due to start vit b12 injections tomorrow. The first weight on the pic is on return from holiday, I fully expected a small gain when I returned as I went back to my normal food and it wasn't as hot. I don't know if I should: A) eat less (I have 3 meals a day, rarely snacks) exercise more C) do both of the above D) stop panicking and wait for my body to catch itself up? Hopefully someone can ease my worries. I'm UK based. Thank you in advance 😊

I'm 2 weeks post op, and I can ride the exercise bike on resistance level 9 (out of 15) and I can walk on the treadmill at speed level 3.5 (out of 5) for 20 minutes each. But I'm impatient because I see so many others doing all kinds of awesome workouts and lifting weights and doing all kinds of things I've only dreamed of being able to do. But I'm still restricted from lifting anything and I can't run just yet (still too heavy, and again, was told not to try before 6 weeks post op). And I have to be honest, I'm so impatient!!! I'm already off 4 meds and stable and I just want to build muscle and strengthen my core and lose even more weight lol I know, I know....I have to take my time and let my body fully heal and follow my surgeon's advice. I know, and I will. But have any of you felt this way? Like before you were totally cleared at 6 weeks? Were you impatient and excited and chomping at the bit to get started seeing what your new body can really do??

Eating every 3 hours....
Crisscat replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At this point Im willing to try anything lol. I do not get to walk just yet as I have a bad right knee. I am pending a knee replacement surgery when I lose enough weight because the Dr will not do it at my current weight. That being said I am up and moving more than what I was previously. I need to maybe try and push myself and do the walking and see how it goes -
I have those horrible bat wings, too. And because I have PCOS, I hold a TON of weight in my stomach, so I already know that there will be a lot of skin to remove from my arms and stomach. I want my boobs done because they got demolished from having kids lol So this is as good a time as ever to get em fixed, The panniculectomy I want to get done first since it's covered by my insurance, and it'll take care of the whole skin slapping when I walk or work out lol

Eating every 3 hours....
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It might be because you're not eating enough protein. If you don't have enough, it can slow things down. You also need to make sure you're getting enough calories. If you're walking or working out but barely eating, your body will think it's starving and hold on to every bit of weight it can. I would still celebrate those 14 pounds!!! And it looks like you have a total of 36 total gone from pre and post surgery, which is amazing!!! You also maybe have hit your stall early. 9 days seems super early for that, but it might be possible. Not sure, tho. -
February 2019 weight loss buds
gabybab replied to TheMarine79's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
3+ years. Wow! I've never achieved the weight-loss my doctor predicted I would lose. I'm disappointed in myself because I've cheated and not stuck to the plan. I admit I am a foodaholic. I still have a lot of restriction, but have taken to drinking sugary drinks. I have an appointment with my surgeon tomorrow to discuss if I should have a revision. I'm 255 and my lowest was 240. My surgeon thought I would get to 180. I'm embarrassed to see him tomorrow. Has anyone else done a revision? My dr originally wanted me to do the DS and I said no, so I just have the sleeve. I'm probably looking at the same process to get surgery. About 6 months. I'm 57 and feel if I do this surgery it might give me extended life. Hope all of you are doing well in your new life-styles. I'm happy that I've still kept 85 pounds off. 😊 -
Eating every 3 hours....
Crisscat replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery 5/3 and I feel like that. I dont care to eat at all and often I dont realize how much time has passed and before I know it 4 or 5 hours have gone by and Im still not hungry at all. My brain will suddenly get a thought of oh wish I could have that or cant wait until I want to eat food again or sometimes I will get a craving. Odd thing is I have stopped losing weight. I lost 14 lbs in 9 days and nothing since a big 0!! Im beginning to wonder what the heck. I barely get in 400-500 cal per day. I have an appt with my dietician tomorrow. Im getting discouraged -
My insurance will cover a panniculectomy (literally just the removal of the skin on the lower stomach that hangs down). No tightening of muscles, no lipo, nothing. So I will be having that done once I hit goal. Once I'm a good 18 months out (or stable in my weight for at least 6 months past hitting goal) I'm going to have a tummy tuck, arm lift, breast lift and augmentation. Not sure if I'll do my thighs or not. Depends how my legs look after all that is done, I guess lol

Keto Diet
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to lizardskelter's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I lost 100 pounds over 9 months and then when the weight came back, I gained it all back plus an extra 11 pounds. I just sat and cried, and that's when my PCP suggested WLS. -
Ditto! I did keto as well. I didnt lose as much as sleevediva2022 but I did gain it all back as soon as I stopped tracking everything I ate and I got back up to my highest weight again. I believe I had lost 40 lbs and gained 45 lbs back.

I had to do keto as my pre surgical diet - 2.5 weeks. That was enough. I can’t stand the high fat aspect. Never been good with fatty/oily foods regardless if being good or bad fats. So it would never be an option for me long term. Bedsides I really don’t like bacon. 😉 The reading I did about it & conversations with my dietician all pointed to it being fine for the short term (like a kick start to a diet) but not the long term. Plus it can mess with your sugar levels, cholesterol, etc. There will always be fervent advocates of any diet. But no one diet works for everyone. If there was no one would ever have a weight issue. Use the time during which you are losing to start to work out a plan that works for you. It needs to be sustainable (you can do it long term). It needs to complement your lifestyle. It needs to support you to maintain your weight without you feeling like you are being punished, missing out or making too many sacrifices. Plan a way of eating not a diet. But talk to your dietician & do your own reading (avoid the pro keto ones though). May be have a look at Aitken’s as a lower fat alternative to keto if you are drawn to it. But look into lots of eating plans including what nutrition your body actually needs to function effectively.

I had my surgery RNY on May 10th and have my first follow up appointment. Now I weighed myself and it said I gained 2 pounds and I don’t know if that is because of swelling still or not.

Keto Diet
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to lizardskelter's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Only if you can stick to it for life. It's more a lifestyle change, not so much a diet. I did it, and I lost 100 pounds. But in my case, I have PCOS and couldn't keep the weight off no matter how hard I tried. If you do keto and then go off, you will gain all the weight back quickly, and the more you start and stop, the less effective it is. -
Kinda annoyed and confused
Gracie Stanley replied to SleeveToBypass2023's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I’m at 2 1/2 weeks from gastric and I have the same issue I was told just limit to 1/4 cup off soft food. Not good I ended up with bad stomach aches and I was told to go back to liquids. So far I have not lost any weight nor gained. I have no clue what to do. So I know what you are going through. Good luck!! -
What Is the best body scale to purchase?
Harley31 replied to Lsoto81's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I went to CVS and bought their health brand one. It comes with an app you can sync with your phone. Measures weight, BMI, water intake, muscle, bone Mass and much more. You can track all of that on your phone. -
Heartburn after Allurion Balloon
Loopy Lou 04 replied to Loopy Lou 04's topic in Gastric Balloon Forum
Oh hell me too - it’s keeps making me really sick. Of course I’m losing weight but it’s grim 🥺. How are you doing? -
I have taken melatonin from the week of my surgery with no issues. The tablets are so small and dissolve quickly so I see no reason why you wouldn't be able to take them. I have also been taking vitamin capsules and my normal meds (up until I no longer needed them after the weight loss). My doctor told me if I could get them down comfortably they are fine to take.

How often do you weigh yourself after WLS?
Joshmaul replied to Possum220's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't, mainly because my bathroom scale doesn't handle going above 300 all that well, heh - most of my weigh-ins have been at either my PCP's office or the weight-and-wellness center where my surgeon is based. They properly calibrate their scales. -
6 weeks out - I'm very worried - could I stretch my sleeve with this amount of food??
vikingbeast replied to bestdecisionmade's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I also was able to eat more than your average sleever. But also, I suspect my surgeon made my sleeve a bit bigger knowing how active I was even before surgery (it's hard to be so active when you can't eat enough!). When I was three months out I was restricting myself to 800 calories and my center's nutritionist had an absolute conniption at me. Said I was ruining the tool and if I wanted to just gain all the weight back, that was my business. I was devastated for a hot second before I absolutely lost my temper at the top of my lungs and fired her so loud they heard it in the surgeon's office across the hall. A friend of mine recommended a nutrition program she used, and I am so glad I found it. Immediately my nutrition coach (who had coached other bariatric patients before) upped my calories to about 1200, still prioritizing protein. Over the last six months she's increased it to 1600-1800, and we're just now backing off a little bit because I feel like all I do is eat. I have just a few pounds left to lose, so they will be harder to shift. I expect maintenance will be around 1600 calories depending on activity level. -
Anyone have Mast Cell Disease?
SleeveToBypass2023 replied to one4sorrowtwo4joy's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I can't speak to the MCAS, but I can on a few other things. The pills: I had to crush mine (except for 2 capsules that can't be crushed or broken - I have MS and those are MS specific meds) for about 12 days. On day 13 I could take them without being crushed at all, although I still can't take all my pills at once like I used to. Exercise: There needs to be some kind of exercise. Walking is the #1 to prevent blood clots and work out the gas pain (break it up and help it go away). It also helps with the weight loss. The other things you can do are total bonuses that will also be great. Never try to do more than you safely and comfortably can, but do try to do as much as you can. Diet: Can you have cottage cheese (since you can have dairy)? Have you tried avocado spread, non fat refried beans, mashed potatoes, plain hummus? There's also protein pudding, protein oatmeal (I just bought them on the BariatricPal website here), and of course protein shakes, protein smoothies, and protein flavored water. Also, try bone broth (variety of flavors). That also has protein in it. And of course eggs are great, too. There's lots of ways to get your protein in. You may not be able to get off the protein drinks like the rest of us can as we move into solid foods and get our protein from there, but you CAN still get your required protein in other ways. -
*trigger warning* My Dad
Dave In Houston replied to Tatt's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
From what I understand, my weight loss surgeon wants to see me once a year for the rest of my life. I'm going to the 1-year post-op visit today. So I'll always have a doc to call if I need one. -
yes missing meals and letting yourself get too hungry is bad. So before I go out, I always bring a high protein yogurt and cut up veggies or tuna and crackers and eat on the go. Which also eating on the go after surgery is never a good idea! I hope you just hit a stall and keep loosing until you reach you goal weight!!!

Nina, I am so glad you had a better experience the 2nd time around. Me too! They weight is coming off a little slower for me but still making good progress!
