3 years post VSG to RNY
Tomo replied to GreenTealael's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
That's right. So strange. I had the most difficult time getting treatment because how often they occurred. "Too soon for another prescription for antibiotics..." Etc. Over 1 yr. 2 months now, not one UTI (I would've had 3 or 4 in that time frame pre-revision. I have no idea why the sleeve gave me constant UTIs. Never heard of it nor read about it so at the time, I didn't think it was connected. I honestly didn't think it was the sleeve until a couple of months after my revision, I was like... Wait, what happened to my constant UTIs? So glad there is someone else out there that can identify with me. -
Revision from sleeve to bypass- questions.

Just a little update. Got my surgery scheduled for 11/30. I asked for refresh on the diet and am signed up for a couple of classes and online groups with other patients and dietician. Having really horrible GERD this month, I have vomited like 3 times this week from it. I’m so looking forward to the relief. -

How very glad to hear you're still doing great and almost there to your goal. I have kinda stalled for the last 2 months or so. But it's also cuz I have been travelling and wasn't following the plan to the T. I do want to lose another 10 or 15. Let's see if I make it. I am kinda happy with 120 but a bit wary of the 10-20 pounds bounce that can happen in year 2 or 3. Hence, I want to make myself steady around 105 or so, so even if I were to gain a little, I'll be alright. -
Hello lovely people. So im confused on how every forum including my own surgeons says all different times to start things after surgery. Some day week 1-2 u can have mashed pot some say no only creamed soups some say yogurts some say You can have some normal food at week 3 please tell me what you all did or are doing . My nutritionist even is saying different then what was on post op papers . I don’t want to mess this up but if I can attempt different things that won’t affect me and is “allowed” I sorta want to. Happy to hear everything went well! 🫂 Oxy and Zofran were my best friends for the first 3 days. I'm only 8 days post-op but the difference in how I feel now (mentally and physically) vs. 3 days ago - like a new person. It will 100% get better! Wishing you a smooth recovery with lots of rest 🤍 -
Spices (not heat) post op
catwoman7 replied to KimA-GA's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
my sense of taste intensified for awhile after surgery - sweet things tasted sweeter, spicy things tasted spicier. I haven't noticed that in a long time, though - not sure if it went away or if I just got used to it. But to answer your question, I don't remember being bothered by non-hot spices, like cinnamon. It was more the hot ones. Like hot peppers in various Asian dishes. I can eat them again now, but for a few weeks or months, they were too hot for me. -
Hi! From my understanding my surgeon has a 1 week pre-op liquid diet, so I'll start it right after the first of the year.

Week 2 finally over and saw my dietician today. Woo hoo puried. We went to olive garden after for lunch and I asked them if they could puree my soup and the kitchen said yes. It was delicious.

Back to work after one week??
SleevedandPleased replied to KRod6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had surgery on a Wednesday and was back at work on Monday. I have a desk job so that part was fine. I didn't struggle much other than being tired by the end of the day. A week off to rest and heal would have been nice but going back 5 days post op was completely doable for me. Sent from my SM-F926U1 using BariatricPal mobile app -
I pick up shirts now and I instantly think there's no way it will fit. haha We went to a show over the weekend and I wanted a shirt. I asked for a XL and when I picked it up to look at I was like that's not fitting but I will get it for later. haha I went home and put it on and SURPRISE! It fit, a little tighter than I would probably wear because of my skin rolls but another 10 lbs and it will be perfect! PS: I was a 3-5X depending on cut. So exciting to know I am almost out of the "X"s. haha

Lost 110 pounds but now at 1500 calories a day
Spinoza replied to bluebellblue's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I totally get your worries too - I have also been eating noticeably more in the last few weeks because I am hungrier, and I am fearful that it will just keep increasing and increasing until I'm back to eating too much of the wrong foods again and regaining everything. That's my big fear. And it does happen to some people who did really well post op. I think all we can do is keep tracking, keep observing the effects of a higher calorie intake on our bodies and try and get help early if eating does actually get out of hand again. There's lots of help here, and you should be able to ask your surgeon/dietician too. I really hope that you lose those final 20lbs, you have done so well it would be lovely to get where you really want to be. But even if you don't I hope you're fine in the long term and happy with all you've achieved - it's amazing. -
Holiday, Family, and Recovery

I'm 8 days post op and could probably entertain if I had to, but I just wouldn't want to. The challenge of the surgery wasn't physical for me. If anything, this is probably the easiest surgery I have ever had. After the first 3 days, the struggle has been mental. There is some isolation and feeling out of place when I have no food/or planning for food around my day. Its different when it's preop because there is excitement and all for the surgery and this short-term goal (and still possibility even if you don't do anything with that possibility). Post op you have permanently changed your life. You can't decide that you no longer want to follow a "diet". You have done it. And that's why I got surgery, but that realization is still hard. You have done something that you cannot realistically undo. I imagine at 17 days post, it would be roughly the same. Not because of physical at that point (for me at least-everyone is different), but because of the mental toll. People will need to eat and all, and I just don't want to have to deal with the emotional toll of being around family and not able to partake with them. I want to focus on my own healing. I know that sounds selfish, but I cried when my husband brought home pizza for him and the kiddo. I have ZERO hunger. I didn't want the pizza. I just felt lonely because I couldn't eat. That's a lot to deal with on top of a bunch of family and entertaining. -
I tried some creamy blended soup, but I got bad gas pain and bloating from it. It was Panera broccoli and cheese (blended to make sure no solids and watered down a little). Only had about 2 oz. Going to try a different one and see if that helps. Sugar free Jello makes me break out. So I am surviving on protein shakes and water. Which isn't awful because I'm one of the ones that have 0 hunger post op. I feel like I could never eat again and be ok. Which is great in some ways but also means I feel full whenever I try to drink anything. I'm looking forward to pureed/soft because I am craving normalcy. Sitting at a table with the family and taking a bite of something. I am dreading the 3 week stall, but I am happy to be on the road to a more normal diet pattern.

Revision from sleeve to bypass- questions.
redhead_che replied to lucielu's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had my revision done with the same person so the diet was exactly the same post op. Bonus was I only had a 1 week liquid diet instead of 2. I don’t feel restricted or get full cues so I have to weigh every single thing so I don’t over eat. Because I definitely have got sick/dry heaves when I was lazy and didn’t weigh. -
That chart gives me hope, I am 34.8 lbs. down since surgery... So I hit my 3 month goal at 2 months!

Help getting back on track
Muffinman1119 replied to Happy Stylist's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I too have been struggling with similar issues over the last two weeks. I’ve gotten away from logging my food into the Baritastic App, I’m not drinking enough fluids, and I’m definitely not hitting my protein goals most days. I also have found myself snacking on foods that I would’ve chosen pre-surgery and I really need to nip that in the bud. I think that it’s no coincidence that they harp on fluid and protein intake when you’re in the pre-op phase. I really think those two things are key for successful and sustainable weight loss post surgery. -
I think most people are all guilty of this to an extent. I know I was. I bought all this stuff to make milkshakes that I got he recipes for out of gastric sleeve cookbooks and I think I made all of 3 shakes. I even bought an immersion blender to help make them. Like Ben Franklin said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” You’re preventing being unprepared and it will be worth it in the long run.

6 weeks post op ZERO WEIGHT LOSS AND DEPRESSED
Muffinman1119 replied to crazycatladycanada's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I know this is hard to read and even harder to hear, but one of the worst things you can do is compare yourself to others (I am no different and have been having this problem for the last few weeks myself). You’re the only you and there is no one else like you that has your exact situation, weight, metabolism, etc. Just try to stay focused with your post op and doing the best you can. That’s all any of us can do. -
1-week post op; feeling all over the place
Arabesque replied to KRod6's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
First, congratulations on your surgery. Secondly, it’s okay not to be ticking all the boxes in the first couple of weeks. As long as you are making an effort & you are getting closer it’s okay. You’ll find some days are easy & otherwise more of a struggle. Your shakes, broths etc. all count towards your fluid intake and I used to dilute my shakes (doubled the water) to dilute the flavour & to up my fluid intake. Used to sip on them for a couple of hours or until finished. Also added a little more water to the soups & broths too. If you’re worried about your protein intake you can also add some additional protein powder to your shake & swapping in protein water for drinking water will help too. I embraced my dislike for sweet & used it to withdraw myself from sweet tasting foods & drinks. Once onto purees & more solid foods, you’ll likely find other foods, even old favourites, smell or taste bad too for a while. It passes. Vitamins can be a challenge. The taste, difficulty swallowing them, nausea, etc. I took capsules which were easier to swallow (once my swelling reduced around day 4). Some surgeons are strict on when you can begin swallowing meds & recommend chews or patches. So it can be a bit of trial & error to find the right ones for you. Expensive too. -
My endoscopy was yesterday. A piece of cake! The hardest part was the IV, my veins like to hide! Nurse suggested for the actual surgery I ask for ultrasound IV help as I/we'll have 2 IV's.. The did find a hiatal hernia :( but i think everything else looked good. Will know more next week at follow-up.. Good luck on your journey!

October 2022 surgery support
MyDogsLoveMe replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
It is. I had mine on 10.11 too. I'm still on liquids the booklet I received says stage 2 is for 2 weeks and then this other paperwork I got at the hospital says 10 days. I can only have protein shakes, soups, water, jello, and Popsicles. I did blend up some soup and then put it through a strainer and pretty much nothing went through =(. I can't wait for applesauce, or yogurt even! Scared but excited. -
Howdy! I've been so busy enjoying this new freedom called get up and MOVE! I have joined a fun dance group called Body Groove and it is a fantastic way of getting up and get moving with low impact. It's an app you can download on your TV and dance along. Overall I have been able to resume normal eating, but the raw food are still kinda iffy. I think I'll wait awhile before introducing salads. I need to stay focused on protein and hydration. With my morning protein drink (coffee replacement) and adding liquid protein to my water, I haven't had any issues with meeting my protein requirements. I find more than anything is that I'm tired. I was successfully able to give blood and my iron count was 13.5 so I know my nutrients and supplements are absorbing. I go for my 3 month checkup soon and they'll be analyzing my blood labs a bit closer. Constipation is a real issue. even though I take a Dulcolax chew about once a week, I think I'm gonna have to up it to every other day. Suppositories work real well, but I hate when it has had to get that far. I also started drinking a green smoothie most days to get in my trace minerals in wheat grass powder, veggies, and adaptogens from mushrooms. Anyone else try Ka'Chava? I really like it My weight stalled around 207/208 for about three weeks but I dropped a considerable amount of inches. So far I am staying within the healthy weight loss bracket. I'm anxious to post my Onederland scale picture soon!!

(Warning: this is long) tldr; for ME, in MAINTENANCE, carbs consumption makes little difference to my weight. K. My NUT didn’t give me a carb goal/limit per se, but did instruct me to aim for my meals to consist of 25% carbs/starches (with another 25% being protein and the remaining 50% to be low-glycemic veggies). With that said, i did my own thing (and told her so): i ended up doing ultra-low carb, i.e., less than 25g NET carbs per day. Got to goal in 7 months, remained carbophobic, lost a few more pounds and basically still went out of my way to avoid them. I wasn’t ultra-low carb as during weight loss phase, but i was still pretty low. Eventually, i started eating more and nowadays (4 years post), i probably eat as much carbs as a “regular” person. I have remained under goal weight this entire time. These are my takeaways of going low-carb (and this is from MY experience, YMMV) 1) weight loss is rapid. but you need to remain low carb for an extended period. If i carb up on a day, the weight loss slows down or pauses. There is a science to this phenomenon regarding ketosis, the explanation of which is beyond the scope of my post (just google it if ur interested). Also want to say that i was also ultra-low calorie so obvs that contributed! 2) there is a period of a few days that, once passed, my cravings for carbohydrates went away. (Which is why once u start, stick to it because u may have to go thu the “white-knuckle” phase again to alleviate urself of the cravings (see note 1 above) 3) now here is the kicker: during MAINTENANCE (i cant say if this applies to weight loss phase because i didn’t try it)…i discovered that, for ME, it does not matter if my 1800 cals average i eat a day consists of 20g of carbs or 200g. My weight stays the same regardless. What does make a difference is CALORIES. So long as my calories stay at around 1800 (however it is comprised) then im good. 4) carb consumption affects my looks. When i low carb, my body is more defined (which i like) and my face more gaunt (which I don’t like). These days my face is lovely (lol), but my body could be better. Mind u i have also been slacking on the exercise front so that is also a factor, but i digress. In any case, the point is i am still basically the same weight as my low-carb maintenance days. And that concludes my dissertation for this evening lol. P.S. I want to point out also that i am NOT insulin-resitant, nor suffer any other medical conditions that affect my weight, nor take any medications that would either. So this may not be everyone’s experience. P.P.S. Sorry this was so long!

I work in claims so it really depends on what your company's STD offers. You could check with your HR. I took 2 weeks of STD and the first week of any STD is unpaid and with my company they made me use some of my PTO for that week. Mine is not divided out as Vacation and Sick. So one week was my time and the other week was paid by STD.

Hi! I’m almost 10 weeks post rny surgery. I keep having a long lasting bad taste in my mouth. (Yes I’m taking my reflux meds!) I was trying to pay attention to when it’s worse and I think it’s after I take my calcium chew! I switched to a different brand and it’s the same taste. I’m wondering if calcium citrate chews cause a bad taste for anyone else? Maybe it’s something else and I’m way off but I feel like it’s the chews! Thanks for your time!
