    Starting to get scared!

Real common! I think especially for us introverts. Part of the attention is because you are changing and ppl who know the "old" you are commenting about the change. When I have lost weight in the past this drove me crazy! But I'm handling it better this time. Can you continue your therapy? This is exactly the time it helps to have professional guidance and coping advice. In time, you will get used to the extra attention and the changes will be your new normal but this transition period can be tough. Hang in there!

    Starting to get scared!

I had to find something that counted on me being smaller and meant more to me than the pain of going through being noticed and even what the numbers said on the scale. When I couldn't make this journey about me or my health, I made it about getting smaller so that I could ride my horses and get back into competing on them. You can't be as competitive as a rider when you are bigger. It's not fair for your horse to carry that extra weight -- you're not upholding your part of being the best you can be as part of that team. Granted, I like how I look in the mirror now that I've lost 40 pounds but just looking better for me is not motivation enough. I'm actually dreading getting smaller and having guys hit on me. It makes me uncomfortable if they are way over the top about it. One of the perks of being fat is being invisible and it's hard having to learn with how to cope with stuff like that. The only way how I know now to get through that discomfort is to remind myself that it's important for me to get smaller for my horses and for what I want to do. I cannot let my embarrassment or uneasiness about how I look trump me getting fit for them. It has to take a back burner if I want to do what I've dreamed about for so long and stopped doing once I was bigger. I don't know if it's a healthy approach from a medical standpoint but it's the only one I know that's going to work for me so far. I've tried working with therapists to figure out why I sabotage or have those feelings of being exposed more when I lose weight but I never figured out why. I wasn't abused in any way and didn't have any really bad dating experiences. I'm just uncomfortable being judged like that. So I had to find something that meant more to me than having that discomfort. Riding horses is my lodestone that keeps me on track.

    Anyone from dundee or nearby

Thanks Sadie. I actually work in Carnoustie. Congrats on your weight loss, thats really great. I'm struggling just now but think I'm just needing a good fill. I checked with the Spire Murrayfield but I think it was about £300 for a fill, does that sound right? Great to hear from you.
  4. Greetings November Sleevers..... I've had some difficulty getting enough liquids and Proteins, but today is the 4th day and everything seems to be settling down. My sleeve feels pretty comfortable and I'm moving around pretty normally. I didn't have any difficulty finishing my 30g Protein drink this a.m. and am sipping a nice chai latte now. Feels pretty normal. Not hungry, and feeling much more like I will be "myself" soon. But, get ready for this: I went downstairs to weigh myself this a.m. because I am/was convinced I must have dropped a few pounds since I went in the hospital. I have GAINED 4 lbs! I know it must be Fluid retention, no BM yet, but it was a shock, I have to tell you. I have barely eaten anything (maybe 400 calories/day?) so I wasn't expecting this. I am not alarmed but I am shocked. Has anyone else experienced a weight gain after coming home? Jeez.
  5. Totally normal. .. that water weight will leave as quick as it came.. hang in there

    Port site discomfort

I've noted the periods of 'more discomfort' on my port, are related to those times when I've rammed that part of my belly into something which serves as a kind of blunt force. First time about 1 year postOp I was loading yard debris into a utility trailer where the side was just a little below my port. By that evening I noticed along with the discomfort was a little bruising, which coincided where I would lean over the side rail without thinking about it, and subject poor Mr. Port to some kind of fulcrum-wedging. The last few years the only port discomfort I've had, is a bit of tender skin over the port area, which the more I rubbed it seemed to make me less happy. I changed that little habit and over the last 6 months have had no complaint....well....HARDLY none. Sometimes my fantasy is it would be nice to move it....yet it seems perfectly placed and perfectly installed. Mine is to the right of mid line half way to the lateral side of body, and about 8" above my navel. Perfect access for any fills I've had, as it is well stabilized and easily palpated. When I lost my first big amount of weight, it was rather like a smooth quarter-sized pebble that became easier to notice as the glacial fat melted away. Now it's noticeable as a roundish lump under my t-shirt when I'm out flexing on the beach.

    Port site discomfort

After 2 1/2 years, I'm nearing goal weight & have noticed that I'm starting to have more port site 'discomfort'. I don't know what triggers it. Could it be that I have less fat insulating it? LOL. Anyone else have this trouble? Is this something I should be talking to my surgeon about or is this normal?

    8 8 8 8

Yup, you guessed it, 8 more days! In honor of this enormous achievement I've put together a little list of 8 post band goals/dreams 8. Lose weight! 7. Feel good about myself again 6. Cholesterol levels in the normal range 5. Do a 'real' push-up 4. Run for 3 miles without stopping 3. Wear shorts 2. Start dating again 1. Wear a bikini!
  9. Someone posted that as women lose weight they release a lot of estrogen as it is trapped in fat cells. As the fat cells are shed they release estrogen into your blood stream, leading you to feel emotional, moody etc. similar to pregnancy hormones. I can personally attest to the fact that I have been more emotional, sensitive and have a much shorter fuse than usual. Since my hubby pointed it out I have been trying to be more conscious of it. I also have a very high stress job and between having surgery on 9/6 and my brother passing on 10/1; my priorities have really shifted. Family and self first.

The other day at work a woman who I hadn't seen in months walked right past me and then came back and said hi and that she didn't even recognize me at first! Then today at a family BBQ everyone made it a point to tell me how great I looked! Down 110 pounds in 4.5 months The weight loss is slowing down... And I've encountered a few stalls... I think three. But I've gotten through them Silly me at today's BBQ I had like 8 ritz crackers and a spoonful of relish and three chunks of pineapple. I thought I was fine... But I ended up in the bathroom for a little... Note to self... Don't mess with crackers or pineapple again! But all in all a good day

    April 2nd Sleeve_Suggestions

@@Nik1115 wow, i hear april 2nd is the best day in the world to have surgery!!! you are probably going through a bunch of mixed emotional feelings like many of us did being excited, scared, nervous, and back again suggestions.............. follow allll the rules you've learned from the board and your doc and NUT too !!!!! we are all wise beyond our years but we are not surgeons/docs/nuts we will support you - give you advice - but the final word should come from your doc/nut (even though we're frequently smarter be as prepared "mentally" as you can for having a "little" pain/discomfort after surgery maybe normal post op issues of gas/vomitting etc for the gas - walk as soon as possible in the hospital keep walking - that helps get rid of the gas if you are in pain - don't be shy about taking pain meds you might be tired for awhile when you get home get as much rest as you can, and then nap keep drinking, sipping - very important you can't afford to get dehydrated remember that you didn't wake up one morning and you were heavy you won't wake up one morning and be skinny either god grant me patience just hurry up about it!!!! take things slow expect the worse, and hope for the best!!!! all that being said - many/me had great recoveries hardly any issues many people returned to work within a few days, or a week never compare your weight loss/time period or anything with others "the one thing we all have in common is that we're all different"!!!! good luck wednesday speedy recovery kathy
  15. Hi all!! I am 22 years old and getting banded March 12th by Dr. Nimul of True Results in Scottsdale! I am scared out of my mind but also so excited! I have been overweight almost my whole life so it will be wonderful to finally get rid of this weight. Any information would be so helpful and so greatly appreciated! :mad2: I am keeping this a secret from most of my family and friends so I am unable to talk and express myself as much as I'd like!
  16. Bek...don't worry about the end result...work on getting healthy and along with weight loss will come a new found confidence. I am 5'7" (a little shy of that) and started this journey at 249#. I am a little below goal and have a flat tummy and minimal loose skin. I am 53 yrs old and came out of it all just fine. The only thing I notice is a little sagging of the upper thigh. My DH is the only one that sees that and if there ever is a complaint by him........he just won't go there anymore!!!!!! (BTW...he's been very supportive). Hang in there. Do this for you. You have every chance of coming out of this with great results due to your age. Good luck to you!
  17. I've been offline for quite awhile...moved...moved again...kept losing pounds slowly but surely...still working on it all...but...I just recently moved to an African country and pretty much all we eat is fresh foods...I'm having to completely change my diet based on what I can get and can't get due to my location...thus back online I go to make sure that I keep with my original weight loss goals and continue that slow loss down to my goal weight... I'm not complaining about eating fresh...most of it comes straight out of my garden, but since being banded I've struggled with getting salads/raw veggies down and keeping them down...so honestly, other than an occasional bite...I haven't really eaten raw vegetables for a really long time... Suggestions? Fills/unfills aren't going to happen...there are no docs where I'm at. Yes, I can cook them, but I'd like to figure out a way to get some raw veggies down my gullet. I've tried leaving out the lettuce...which really seems to cause me issues..but it doesn't seem to matter... I'm currently trying the chew to mush method, which allows me to eat *maybe* 1/4 cup...but that is all...and maybe that is enough... I'm just wondering what others experiences/tips/suggestions might be.

    Calf size

I can only fit in normal, knee-high boots when I am under 140. I started at 237 and I had mailman calves- thick, muscled, calves. As I dropped weight, I did a lot of running so I still had big calves, but they were slightly leaner. They still didn't fit into boots. It was only when I dropped beneath 140 that regular boots fit me and I tend to wonder if part of the reason for that is I was doing a lot of walking (recovering from plastics) as opposed to running and the muscle size was reduced. Some of us just have annoyingly thick calves, but at least for me they did eventually drop in size to a point where I can wear boots. As an NSV, this year when Target put all of their boots on clearance, I ended up getting about 8 pair. Part of the reason involved the fact that I was totally stoked that they all fit me, lol.

    hope I don't chicken out

I'm 5 foot 2 inches, & just turned 50. My starting weight at my first doctor's appointment was 213 so I know where you're coming from! I have been waffling since the beginning. I'm worried something will go wrong and I will be one of those low percentages they talk about that have complications. Ugh!

    Proud of myself

I just have to say that these "little" victories is what it is all about, just us becoming more conscious of our choices and habits. You did wonderful even though I know it is not easy or pleasant at times. Your weight loss has been awesome so it is apparent that though you claim you had a couple slip ups, you are staying on track and working your sleeve. I wish you the best! Big hugs.
  22. I'm about 6.5 months post-op; is anyone else out there an emotional wreck? I'm tearing up over stupid commercials and constantly irritated with my husband....I've read that estrogen plays a role when losing weight rapidly....but will it stop soon 'cuz this sucks!!

    I really need help

Use the "Surgeons" tab above to look for surgeons in your area. Call their offices to ask about making an appointment to discuss your band and, if can still work for you, how to get the most from it. People here at Bariatric Pal can do their best to help you if you put your messages in one place. You can choose the appropriate place by reading through subject headings in the "Forums" tab above. By the way, weight-loss surgery isn't like sewing a coat. Sleeves are not "put in." Gastric sleeve surgery is a matter of taking out.

    Wake Up Call!

Love your post. I too only focused on the weight loss. But when my blood pressure when from 170/100 to 109/72 or lower I felll in Love with my sleeve. You are doing a Fantastic Job. Here is to a sleeve with Benefits.
  25. I'm still new here & still reading some of the stories and still pretty new to the surgery part (I had surgery on August 3rd). I had a really hard time early on with food, and even still some days I find it very hard to eat anything without feeling disgusted. My weight loss has been steady (it has slowed but my dr said that that is normal). That being said I have worked at eating better, and being 4 months post-op now it is much easier on me as far as eating goes. Has anyone experienced a gain of just a few pounds despite not changing anything eating habit-wise? I had a small gain (3 pounds, give or take), and I figured at this stage is abnormal. I have recently begun exercising daily (walking on my treadmill, using weights). I have an autoimmune disorder that causes pain/stiffness in my lower spine/hips/knee that makes it so I cannot do strenuous workouts, so I have to stick to walking. Could the adding of exercise cause such a small gain? I'm sorry if it seems trivial, and I suppose to a lot it might be a petty thing to worry about, but in my mind 2 or 3 pounds can (and has) turned into 5 and 10 pounds if you get the idea. My next appointment isn't until February so of course, I will talk to my doctor about it, but what are some of your experiences at this stage? Thanks for any info/advice!
