    Jan 21

Jan 21, 06 -- Saw Dr. Billy on Thursday and he gave me the all clear. He and I discussed what I was doing now opposed to what I was NOT doing with the band. I am doing the Nutrisystem meals and counting my calories like mad. I am ever so gradually getting back into my exercise routine. He also wants me to start two lists. SIGH!! One list is of the "thing" that are keeping me from losing weight. Something like eating after 8p, or eating too many calories, etc. Then state how I can correct that issue. Make a plan on how to correct the behavior. The second list is of all the foods I love to eat. Once I have exhausted my pea brain of the items, he wants me to begin with the first item and learn everything I can about that food. He wants me to take a picture of the food per the serving. If chicken is my first item then get a pic of a serving (4 oz) both cooked and uncooked. Learn what the calorie and protein values are of that serving. Take the pic and the info and put it into a folder or notebook so I can refer to it. Do that with all the foods I list. Pic one food a week to learn all I can about it. This will be an exercise in diligence. And consistency as well. SIGH!! OH If I had just done this while I was banded. All in all he was very pleased with my progress while on Nutrisystem. He wants to see me in about 8 weeks. We did not even discuss my options post band removal. I guess it really is too soon to discuss that. In the meantime, I have just completed my Video for the Biggest Loser. YIPPEE!!! I will get that mailed off in the next couple of days. I wanna tweak it some.

    Before 10-10-2011

From the album: Journey (Original Title!)

Another before picture, taken about 6 weeks before surgery. Weight about 275.
  4. Getting excited and nervous! Surgery approved and scheduled for September 4th with the possibility they may move it to the 3rd due to a cancellation. All my pre-op lab work and testing is done and without any concerns. Same for my psych eval, barium swallow, chest x-ray, EKG, and EGD. Did all my pre-op nutrition appointments (I was fast tracked, so there weren't as many as most of you had). Did the pre-op group class where they explained my pre-op diet and what to expect at the hospital and post op. Started my bariatric vitamins last week. Purchased any food/supplies that I think I might need for the first couple weeks post op (my husband even told me to get him a new bigger TV so I can have a TV in my room the first couple days lol... and he got a 65" screen out of it lol). Today I did my final pre-op weigh in and doctor visit. Saw another doc first (teaching hospital), then my real doc. Signed my surgery consent. Too my surprise, the doc also told me that it doesn't matter how much weight I lose now, I am totally approved for surgery (before I had to be careful I didn't put myself under a certain weight and disqualify myself). YAY! I also asked him about how much time I can take off work (I have 14 weeks of sick time saved up and a supportive employer- not that I actually want 14 weeks off, just didn't take all my sick time over the many years I worked there). He said a minimum of 2 weeks but up to 8 since I do have a fairly physical job. YAY! I could probably get away with going back early, but why push myself when I have the time and support? I would rather heal, adjust to my new diet(s) over the next month or so, and slowly build a new fitness routine before going back to the craziness that is work. Not sure how many weeks I will actually take off, but good to know I have options. And then finally, I went to a pre-op anesthesia appointment. Answered all of their questions and signed their consent. So... all that is left is to call and confirm the time of my surgery the afternoon before! And how did I celebrate? I got my last meal of my favorite Indian food. Yum! And my husband is TRYING to be supportive of all of this, but he really doesn't want me to have what he considers to be elective surgery. I understand where he is coming from, especially since every one of his surgeries has had some sort of complications. But my surgeries have all been routine and without complication. And I really need to improve my health and this seems to be the only way to get me there.

    Vitamins

It varies from doctor to doctor. Mine is on the conservative side. I take a multi 2 x's a day, Calcium Citrate 2x's a day, D3 1 x a day and B12 sublingual once a week. Pretty sure if there's a zombie attack vitamins are the least of your worries.
  6. I would like to know your Vitamin schedule and how to take these bitterly crushed pills. I was informed by my NUT that I will be taking pillls crushed for the first 6 weeks. Suffering through the bitterness of it all. She has me taking Prilosec OTC, 5 Calcium citrate w/vit D, B-50 complex, Ursodiol (for prevention of Gallstones empty the capsule), plus 5 other prescription tablets. (These are the things I have to take crushed each day). I also take 2 chewable Centrums a day and a sublingual B-12 once a week. This is my ideal day of taking Vitamins Take chewable Centrum upon waking About 2 hours later, I try to take 1 calcium citrate, B-50, and Ursodiol. After another few hours, I try to remember to take another 2 calcium citrate About 5:30 or 6:00 I take the last 2 calcium citrate and my prescription meds. About 8:00 or 9:00 take the last chewable Centrum. I have not yet figured out a way to take these without having to suffer through the bitterness. I just crush them all, make a little paste with Water in a small dose cup and try to get it down as quick as possible. I can't believe they haven't yet come back up on me after taking them because the taste is horrible. What ways did you use to get through crushing your meds and taking them?

what is your weight loss at 3 mos post op?

What I can tell you is there is no norm on what people lose in a certain amount of time. The factors already stated above influence - age, starting weight, etc. My signature below shows my weight loss the past 13 weeks. I have lost almost 50 pounds since surgery (5'7" 236 starting weight and today I weighed 187.5). I have never hit a stall, but I've consistently lost at a snail's pace. Please note it took me 7 weeks to get through the 190's!!! I started walking on the treadmill for 1-1.5 hours daily the past few weeks. While the scale isn't reporting much, my body composition is changing. Exercise makes a HUGE difference! I found that I was becoming skinny-fat. Don't just base success on what you weigh. I found I was losing a lot of muscle weight and everything was just sagging. Not anymore. Exercise plus my slow weight loss has meant I have very little sagging skin! I have learned to accept my slow weight loss. Comparing myself to others loosing 3-7 pounds per week just leaves me feeling discouraged.

    7 days out and struggling

you're down to your original surgery weight because, like most of us, you probably "gained" weight while in the hospital because of all the IV fluids. It can take up to a week for them to work their way out of your system. I've heard of people "gaining" as much as 10 lbs while in the hospital! fluids go through our stomachs really fast since our pyloric valves were bypassed, so I'd be very surprised if you could stretch your stomach from fluids. Maybe you could if you REALLY slammed them, but 40-50 oz over the course of the day isn't "really slamming" them. I've never heard of anyone doing that from drinking fluids, and we were never warned we could stretch our stomachs from that. So...I'm not sure what to say...

How Do You Journal Your Food

Initially i wrote all my food down plus my weight and how many hours of sleep and exercise. I really like being able to go back and see how I progressed and also what I was eating when I did well and not so well. I too have used my fitness pal and have enjoyed the many features. I especially like when you finish logging in at the end of the day it says " if every day is like today, in five weeks you will weigh XXX pounds". I find that motivating. Even though I like it, I am back to writing down everything as I have put myself back to basics. I have stopped calorie counting as I was getting in to the crazy diet mentality head space again. I went and bought a pretty little notebook that is the same size of my iphone and write in there so it is not a big deal to throw it in your purse or pocket. All the best to you!

    Swimming in a pool

My surgeon was on the conservative side, 6 weeks but usually once your incisions are totally healed. That way there is no chance of infection.

    Exercise

I joined planet fitness on the same day as my two week follow up appointment when my doctor cleared me. I worked out for about an hour and once I was done with some heavy cardio and weight lifting, I had to grab on to my best friend because I thought I was going to fall over. Turns out, I wasn't ready for such intensity and was more eager than my body could reasonably handle while having been on a liquid diet for a month. Plus, I could barely drink water at that point, so I wasn't getting in my fluids every day and I know I wasn't getting in my protein. The next day, I returned and made sure I had my protein that day before working out. I did the same routine and still was feeling exhausted afterward. My friend told me I had to take it easier, so I decided it would be best to wait until I was eating actual food before I returned to Planet Fitness. I've been going this week now that I am off my short term restrictions and I've not had any issues. I feel much better now and can drink more water at once than just a sip or two, so that is huge for me. I say to trust your body and work your way up.

    "The Rules"

Thanks to everyone for the replies. Everything mentioned is what I've heard, but I didn't know if I was missing something. The biggest rule for me to follow right now is the excersize. I have started excersizing 30 minutes a day right now, and my legs are screaming at me. I know that in a week or two, the pain won't be as bad, but I so want to stop. To keep me motivated I made a poster out of a cartoon that says "What fits into your busy schedule better? Excersizing 1 hour a day or being dead 24 hours a day." To everyone good luck!
  15. Hey all, I am getting close to 4 months post op and I am only taking in 400-600 calories a day. I don't feel hungry, even when I do, since I don't crave anything I don't want to eat. I know I've not been taking in enough protein and when I remember to try and 'catch up' its later in the day. I can't eat at my desk at work and my work never gave me any accommodations to help with meeting liquid and food intake which makes it a lot harder. I feel like I've gone off the rails but also having a bad mental night so focusing heavy on the negative which I was doing well at combating the last couple weeks.

    9 month pixs

Thank you! I see that we have about the same numbers. I can't believe you already had plastic surgery. How did that go? If I might say (and you already know this) but be patient, you will break the stall. I finally did. I went to my bariatric surgeon today and I'm down again. He said even if I don't loose in the next year, my body will still change, muscle tone, skin, etc. He doesn't want to see me again for another year. woohoo So I think I will wait a few more months before I see a plastic surgeon. Keep up the good work, the worse is over, IMO. We are AWESOME!!!!

    Pain in abdomen

Glad you are feeling good! I also felt really good by the end of the first week. The largest incision on the left was my sorest one. I believe they do the most maneuvering in that incision and it is the one they remove the stomach through. It was the last one to retain any soreness also... it had some soreness for weeks. As long as you have no fever or abnormal redness/inflammation it is most likely just the internal stitches, nerves and muscles healing. As for calories, you wont really be getting many until you start working purees and solids into your diet. My surgeon had no calorie goal to reach the first weeks... just getting in all my fluids and Protein. My 3 Protein drinks and liquids put me around 400-500 calories at that stage. Are you on Clear Liquids? Are you supposed to be getting a certain amount of calories? You could always have a Gatorade or some juice if you need get a certain amount.
  18. @@Aranks Thanks! I am going to try to just drink a ton of water and see where I am next week. Pheew. THANK YOU!
  19. Wednesday will mark 3 weeks for me. My start weight was 283 surgery date weight 270 and for the past week I have been between 250 and 253. I have gone up and down between those weights. My doctor cleared me for soft foods last Wednesday so I thought that would help get things moving. I'm frustrated because I hit a "stall" a few days before 2 weeks and now I'm hearing about a normal 3 week stall. I'm not noticing anymore NSV witch is frustrating to. Actually felt bloated the last couple of days. I'm also having an on and off again horrible pain on my left side closer to rib cage. Doctor said he has no idea what it could be but possible kidney stone. Also worried because I have NO problems with any fluids. I can drink a lot just have to remind myself to. And haven't gotten sick from any food I've tried. Yesterday and today I have felt hungry really for the first time also. ????. I have anxiety pretty bad and I think I'm over thinking all this so much! Any advise would be great. Thanks so much!

    Frustrating :(

Stalls are part of it all. I was sleeved on 12/15 and hit a stall 2 1/2 weeks later. It lasted a week then I started to lose again. Stick to your program and you will get through it. Can't help with the pain...sorry.

    How many calories?

Lorraine, Yes you are supposed to be on a liquid diet for 2 weeks prior and then just clear liquids for a little bit after, and I have been on my liquid diet for 2 weeks already, tomorrow is my surgery, I have been doing liquids only since the 5th, but you have to remember not all doctors ask for you to do 2 weeks of a liquid diet some ask for more some ask for less it all depends on your doctor and where you live. So just depends. But good luck, being new is a good thing, just make sure you talk to your doctor, and get all your answers. Don't leave anything on the table. I found that is the best thing, and if you have questions that you don't think you necessarily have to ask your doctor, ask people here, they are more than willing to help and answer whatever it is you have questions to.
  22. First three days are the worst! Keep yourself busy and think about the end result! It'll be worth it!
  23. I started the pre-op diet three days ago and I'm losing my mind. How is everyone else doing with the diet ?

    fever?

I did! I had low grade fever the whole entire first week. My doc said it was ok as long as it didn't go over 101 Today marks my 2 weeks post op still dealing with weakness, a bit of nausea, and not reaching my Protein goal

    fever?

I spiked a 102 fever in the hospital, they gave me Tylenol and a cool wet washcloth. It came down, and my white cell count was good. As precaution they had me have a follow-up lab to make sure the white cell count was still normal. My white count was good, and the fever stayed around 99.5 for over a week. Hope your recovery is smooth, and pain free.
