    Sleeve or lap band

I am hopefully revising to the band in the next month (last visit on Friday, then praying I get approval). I've had the band since 2010. I did well in the beginning with no fill. Then I stopped losing and tried getting fills, I started losing again but only because I really couldn't eat anything until late afternoon, even then i would still vomit things up at dinner. I never was able to find my sweet spot. I had my fill removed and by the time I got courage to go back to my surgeon I am the same weight as where I started . I did not originally want the sleeve or bypass because of the risks, but I know I need it now, so I'm willing to risk it. My coworker has the band and she lost weight and was even under weight, but I think she keeps hers tight as I see her eating soft foods at work a lot of the time (I could be wrong). But now she's gained some weight back too and seems to be struggling to lose it again. It's all up to you, but from my experience I would not recommend the band to anyone. 2. I forgot to mention in my previous post that I had my RNY in 1997 & my lapband revision in 2010. I do not regret getting my lapband whatsoever! I wish I got it sooner! Good luck & best wishes on your journey of improving yourself. Never give up trying! Sent from my VK700 using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve or lap band

I had a band and was just revised to the sleeve in Aug. I had nothing but bad luck and suffering with the band. Even my surgeon said the band is a terrible surgery and I had so much scar tissue for just having the band 2 years.

    Nervous

Yep we are all in the same boat. I am somewhat dismayed that people are still getting banded today. But live and learn. Find an expericed surgeon with revisions and youll be like the rest of us wishing you had done it sooner.

    Older people doing gastric sleeve

I was 69 when I had my sleeve revision from a band. It was not as easy a recovery as the band. I am 2 years post op now and have reached my goal but not without several conplications. I had dehydration and had to go back in the hospital two weeks later. I also have chronic diarrhea to this day. My internist can not find a reason for this but I think age plays a part.
  6. Thanks Gail..... I have so many concerns about this procedure, and don't want to go through it and potentially create other issues that make me regret my decision. I originally went with the band/plication because I knew it could easily be reversed.....or, undone. The bypass is a whole other animal, and being that I'm self employed, I do not have the time for trips back to the hospital. As I'm scouring for info through this site and other places online, I'm also thinking (for the gazillionth time), maybe I'll start Weight Watchers. I cringe that I'm even thinking about going back down that road.....which historically, leads to nowhere. Ugh.....I'm in such turmoil. Thanks so much for reaching out. Though we all share a common thread, it's nice to hear from another 1955er.... Physically, things are a lot different now then they were at 45 I am 61 and had my revision surgery on 12/9/2016. At this point, I am down 33 pounds, with weight loss the first 3-4 weeks very slow, but then picked up momentum. Like Travelher, I have found my pouch is bigger than those who have not had a revision, so I measure and watch what I eat. There has been some emotional adjustments I was not aware of until I joined this forum (I love this forum) but it absolutely has ben worth it! At my age, excess skin is already a "situation" but my health is so much better. I recommend you do it as I would do it again. since we are the same age, I would be happy to be your "buddy"! Gail

    12 years and NO success

I hear you!! I am in the same boat! I had my surgery in 07, starting weight 292, currently 276 (274) and I am SOOOOOOO frustrated with the minimal loss!!! I don't want to have another surgery, I just want the surgery I had to WORK! I understand that I need to work with the band, but clearly I am able to "eat" around the band and that sucks! My current insurance is not the same as the one that covered the surgery, so I have to do some research and are some calls to see if I can get a fill or consultation to talk about a possible revision surgery for a new band or even the sleeve.
  9. Well with this surgery I was at 371 and yesterday I weighed in at 296. But I actually had gastric sleeve done in 2012 and my heaviest weight was 470 but the sleeve wasn't a great success, wasn't done correctly so I had a revision to rny in September. So total weight loss at this time is 175. Sent from my XT1585 using the BariatricPal App
  10. I'm considering a Lapband/plication to RNY revision and combing through the various posts online for info. I'm reading a lot about reactive hypoglycemia, and how many start having it anywhere from 6 months to several years post-op. I'm concerned because I already deal with RA, but I'm able to control it with diet. It sounds like it can become a runaway train and very tricky to control after this surgery. I think this scares me more than anything else because I've dealt with it for years; long before band/plication surgery. I'm interested to hear from anyone dealing with blood sugar issues since their bypass.
  11. I had my revision from lap band to gastric bypass at 62 and I am sooooo glad I did it! I never lost the weight with the lap band like I am losing with the bypass Not a tremendous amount but YES DO IT
  12. Notinks, I totally agree on all counts.....thank you. I do believe that the band will have to come out at some point, and I would like to do a revision before I gain ALL of my weight back. Though a bypass is the only revision I would consider, there is something about it that scares me. The sleeve scares me even more and it completely out of the question. I think the idea of changing my plumbing freaks me out a bit and I don't know what to expect. I'm self employed, and if there are any complications, I couldn't put work on hold for anymore than two weeks; I would lose my clients! Although, I work from my home office and could rest when necessary. That in itself is a blessing!
  13. I had just turned 50 when I had mine revised. I would definitely do it. It will be harder to carry the extra weight around as you age. Why not do what you can to stay active as long as you can. Also, if you leave the crap band in, you may end up HAVING to have it out later on when you are even older. Best of luck to you!
  14. My advice is to get back on the wagon by starting with the basics. Meal planning measuring and tracking. I measure and weigh everything! I portion things out and only eat my portion. When eating out do the same. order a to go box when you arrive and portion out your food and put the rest away...do not eat from a common plate (share appetizers) those things encourage you to over eat. As a revision patient I know my pouch is double the size of a normal bypass pouch. so I'll always be able to eat more than other bypass patients. This is why I portion and measure. My meals generally consist of around one cup of food. 3oz of meat and 1/2 cup of vegetables. I make amazing Snacks using my premier Protein chia seeds and a couple of tbs of pudding mix. anyone can eat around any surgery...people eat around the band by eating sliders. Food addicts will find a way if you let it. Also, pay attention to your cravings...mine always happen around my period...so I can tell myself this week...there is an explanation for it, I don't give into it all the way (will have fruit chips instead of chocolate). but it helps me recognize this starving feeling is just going to last for a week and not the rest of my life and there is a reason. it helps me keep control and not feel victimized by it. You can do this! don't make yourself a victim and take control. I can recommend a good facebook group called "recipes for weight loss success". I follow the plan and it is working for me. lots of recipes on there to try to change things up and keep things interesting. you can add me on myfitnesspal as well. I'm travelher on there as well. Join the New Years weight loss challenge to set goals and help stay accountable.
  15. Don't see what age has to do with it. if you need a revision get a revision. I'm only 49 but never would have considered my age as a factor. so thrilled to be rid of that miserable piece of junk that was permanently damaging my body. there are tons of people in their 60's and older who have had bariatric surgery. so I think you are probably fine. if you do a search of forums in here you will find them. good luck with your revision.
  16. I'm close to making a decision to go through the revision surgery. I am concerned that I'm doing this somewhat late in the game. Is there anyone over 50 or 60 that has done it? I'm healthy, but I'm also 61 and wondering if I've lost my mind for even considering this!
  17. I too am needing encouragement . I had my revision surgery on June 6th, 2016. I lost 30lbs over the next 2 months. Then I "fell off the wagon" so to speak. I have gained back 8lbs. It seems I have no "full" switch after a few bites. I have days where it feels like I'm starving and could eat a whole buffet by myself. I had more control with my band (I would throw up if I ate too much). I lost 60 lbs with my band. I had to get my revision because of Gastric Reflux. So far I'm not impressed with the Bypass at all. I feel it has done nothing for me. My husband has even made the same comment I watch "My 600lb Life" and think good grief! Look at those people - they can loose an unfathomable amount of weight and you cant even get rid of 50lbs. I'm sooo disappointed in myself, angry at myself, and embarassed to be seen because people know I have had surgery and think I should be skinny by now. I feel like a failure. I realize the surgery is only a tool - the rest of the work has to come from me. I dont know how to get "back on the wagon". I'm afraid I have stretched out my stomach beyond fixing. I have asked my surgeon for a "buddy" or "mentor" but it seems like here in "small town" Colorado no-one wants anyone else to know they have had surgery. After failure - I guess I can understand why. Any help, advise, suggestions, lectures..... or whatever is necessary I would greatly appreciate. I'm tired of crying and feeling like such a failure.

    Pompeii Surgical (Dr Quinones)

I was sleaved by Dr. Q on 1/18/17 along with my friend that had a band to sleave revision. Everyone was really nice. Dr. Q is great. I would do it again. Good luck in your journey. Sent from my SM-J320V using the BariatricPal App
  19. First of all you look amazing. I had the sleeve done in 2012 and 11 months later I got pregnant and pretty much ruined my sleeve. So I just had a revision to the gastric bypass. Just be careful with your sleeve. From someone who knows all to well, you can stretch it back out. Once you start to feel full, so eating. Research why we don't eat the things they tell us not too easy, that's one thing that hurt me. I was unaware that diet soda would stretch my stomach. It's the little things, so make sure you understand why you don't eat certain foods. Learn what your trigger food are, foods that trigger your sweet tooth and avoid them. How I've helped a little. 20. Hi! I'm 3 weeks post revision band to sleeve. My surgeon was able to remove my band and give me a sleeve in the one operation. The surgery itself took longer than expected as my band had quite a bit of scar tissue around the band and a pouch. Thankfully she was able to perform the sleeve. Recovery wise, I've had a lot of nausea. I stayed an extra night in hospital to get it under control, but still get some rolling nausea now. It's getting better every day- I'm just one of the unlucky ones. I have no interest in food- in fact, I have to set an alarm on my phone to remind me to eat. Pain was managable- I kept up my meds until the prescribed ones were gone (mainly used at night) and took paracetamol to assist with pain and inflammation. I'd say it was a little more uncomfortable than the band, but still managable. I took 4 weeks off work and go back Monday. My scars are healing beautifully and I'm down 20 pounds from pre-op.

    Post surgery follow up care

I had my RNY July 2, 2013. My Surgeon was great for surgery but...his bedside manners left sxo much to desire. He did mine and a attempted a revision from Band to RNY. His band had eroded intyo his liver so they couldn't finish the RNY. He ended up with abcesses and the DR dropped him right in the middle of everything. He was deathly sick for 10 months, 3 of which he doesn't even remember. I had Strictures (kind of like scar tissue) so I needed him to do 4 ENDOSCOPES with 3 dialations. He called us "THE PROBLEM CHILDREN"!!! So I fired him. I went to another Bariatric Center they performed my last endo with a dialation. Haven't had any more problems. Hubby eventually went to Mexico for his WLS. They don't offer aftercare either. (BAD CHOICE) Our PCP's are doing the extra bloodwork that is needed and then I have them fax it to the new Bariatric Center so if we have a problem they catch it. I have a list odf what they need to check so I don't need to travel 5 hours unless needed, Good Luck in your journey. Keep is posted on your progress.

    Nervous

I had the band in 2005 then revised in 2011 due to slip and never lost with it the way I was supposed to, I then got the band removed and rny same day one surgery. At first you might say what the heck did I do. After your body heals and you follow the rules it will be the best surgery you can have. I am almost to goal lost 90 pounds in a year and that's . Band patients lose a bit slower than first timers. I couldn't be happier!! Good luck and follow your heart it will work as long as you listen and follow your surgeons advice Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  24. I'm not sure that anyone is "perfect" and it hasn't been easy, but I'm almost 5 weeks out and 23 lbs down from surgery. I had a 2 week stall in there where I lost nothing. It broke and I'm down!! I get 60ish Gm Protein and 80oz of water/liquid daily. I workout 5-6 days per week for at least an hour. I'm just doing cardio right now, but stepping it up after my 6 wk appointment next week. I am almost down 100 lbs and was very successful with the band, but had a revision due to complications. Don't let imperfection break you and don't compare yourself to anyone. Do exactly what your dr says to do! You will be successful! 25. I had revision from sleeve also, surgery was Thursday night, I flew home Saturday and went back to work Tuesday. My energy was very low but I managed. I ended up with double pneumonia (prob from the flight home) but had it not been for that which kept me feeling crappie for about 4-5 weeks I would have been fine.
