20% Long-Term WL?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to songsmith's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have never seen any information about projected/expected weight loss for bariatric surgery that bases it on initial weight. All of the studies/data I have seen base it on excess weight. -
just want to know I'm not alone....
VSGAnn2014 replied to kranky813's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it gets better. In fact, it gets much, much better. It gets so much better you cannot even BELIEVE right now how much better it will get. :) This is the sucky time. So go find some "one year anniversary with pix" threads here and read those. And imagine you being one year out and at or below 140 pounds (your weight loss goal) and wearing a size [insert your dream size here] and looking 15 years younger and having more energy than a baby goat. :) The first week is really tough. And the first month may not be so great either. But after that it'll all seem so much more normal. And within months you'll be able to eat (gradually) everything you couldn't possibly eat right now. But just not as much. But you won't freak out over that either because ... you / we / I all ate like pigs before VSG. Do you want to eat like that again? No, I knew you didn't. Instead, you want to wear Size [yeah, that one] and weigh [yeah, that weight] and look like [just imagine it] and be so proud of yourself you could bust. :) Feeling better yet? -
The mighty scale
Dub replied to highfunctioningfatman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personal philosophy is good to establish on the subject, I suppose. The scale is simply a tool as far as I'm concerned. It shows one single metric.....my weight. As a weight loss surgery patient, I find the scale a damn important tool. Clothes can lie....as we all can dress with larger or smaller cuts of clothing or even change colors and the look/fit is different. The scale, though, shows the cold hard fact of whether or not I've lost or gained. It's gonna be a huge tool when I reach the fighting weight I want to live with, too. It takes only a few seconds to hop on it and get a reading each day. Trends can be countermeasured in a swift and easy way. I'll keep fresh batteries in my scale and look forward to the weight readings at various doctor's appointments. It's a number that I'm proud of and will remain proud of. That was sort of the point of bringing out the big guns and attacking my weight with the aid of wls. It is a priority in my life and one that drives many other aspects. Keeping it under wraps will better ensure that all else goes smoothly. I need my scale and the data it can provide. So do my doctors. Being defined by my weight......nope. I get what you are saying there. I was a jovial fat guy. I still am. Just not quite as fat and hell of a lot more healthy which makes me happier. A smile now isn't forced....it's genuine and full of relief. -
Closest thing to 6 months out as I have...

You, my dear, look beautiful! OMG that is an awesome loss too! And you know what? whatever we are this Christmas it's going to be so much more better than last Christmas -
vitamins and other supplements - I get my vitamins at Walmart. Citrical chocolate chews and Centrum chewables early on, (now I just swallow pills) but get a "petite" variety when I can. Protein shakes - Syntrax Nectar Iced Lemon Tea, later, Quest bars and PowerCrunch bars. I lost my taste for milky, thick shakes for a while and preferred a water mix product. Skin products for sagging - I try to remember to moisturize with a product containing cocoa butter daily. Not sure if it's helping but it smells nice! Exercise IS helping some especially around my arms and legs. Hair products for hair loss - Been taking a biotin supplement since 3 months pre-op. Never really saw much hair loss and my nails are in GREAT shape!

How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
Tiffykins replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I followed a very basic, low carb/high Protein meal plan. I ate 4 meals per day, each meal had a minimum of 15gr of protein. This accomplished 2 things; 1) kept me within my calorie/carb/protein guideline 2) kept me from snacking which is heavily discouraged. My plan stated 600-800 calories, NO more than 30-40gr of carbs (and this is ALL carbs, good/bad, white/complete/whole grain etc, a carb is a carb), and at least 60gr of protein. I ate lots of meat, cheese, greek yogurt, and eggs once I got to regular food. Carbs are my enemy when it comes to weight loss/gain, and like I said, I don't care what source of carb they are classified in. I had a totally boring meal plan, but a little creativity and recipe tweaking made things much easier. -
You look great! Such a dramatic difference but very natural looking. You look at least 10 year younger! Excellent job on the weight loss too! Congrats!!

How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
Tiffykins replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date weight was 263 as well, and at 5'2" a BMI of 49. I low carbed it, and pushed Protein for the first 6 months until I got to goal. You'll have to find what works for you, and your body. Plus, I'm over a decade older than you. Follow your surgeon's directions. The "average" of percentage of weight loss in 12 months with the sleeve is only reported to show about 65% from my recollection, but you can read in the "Success Story" section of the forum that many, many, many of us have lost 100% of our excess weight in the first 6-9 months post-op. Best wishes ! ! ! -
How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
ldydrgnkpr replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had asked the same question. I am not that far out from surgery. The difference is as leeblewb stated a lot of women are much younger on here. I'm 46, starting weight 233 5,1 my bmi was 43-44. I am seeing an average monthly loss of 8-10 pounds give or take. I am hoping to be at my goal before end of October or damn near close. I too do low carb. No white carbs what so ever. Exercise 3-4 times a week. Everyone is different on the loss that they experience. Adhearence and following your surgeons guidelines is key. Good Luck!!!!! Keep us updated. Deb -

Kai Congrats!! By the time you read this you will be sleeved!! So happy for you, it is an amazing tool! Wishing you a smooth recovery and speedy weight loss!! -
I completed my 3 hour class about the surgery. It was very informative and the instructor was amazing. Our instructor had the Gastro surgery so she knew first hand about this journey we all are taking. I am glad I made the decision to do the lap band. A lot of what she said made sense. She gave us names of different protein shakes that didn't taste too awful, so I will be getting that shortly. I had my one on one with Dr. Clark and he answered all of my questions. Now in the class it says no BREAD , no PASTA and NO RICE. I love those three things, but I will not eat it because you may eat just a tiny piece of those things or have a tiny bit that you think is a small amount but once it's in your stomach it becomes bigger, so if you think a spoonful of rice is nothing, it could actually become bigger once it's digested. Also I learned that you can chew gum but don't swallow it, if you swallow it, it may become stock and block food from digesting properly in your stomach. Also I like the analogy the instructor used, she said if you eat too much you could vomit it all up, sort of like if you continue to fill a sink up it will soon overflow. If you guys are in Hampton Roads, I recommend the Weight Loss Surgery on Jefferson Blvd, newportnews, Va to you, because they are very informative and supportive. No question is a dumb question. I'm excited because I have a supportive team near me! Also I learned if you have any negative people near you, you must dismiss them, you need all the support you can get!

Hairloss question?!?
MichiganChic replied to estrob85's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Do a search through old threads for hair loss. This topic comes up several times a week, it seems. It strikes fear in our hearts. I had an extreme case, and even I didn't go totally bad, though you could see my scalp all over. My hair fell out for at least 8 months, and really severely for 4-5 of that. It was very slow to come back. I had surgery 12/12, started losing hair 4/13 through 12/13. Didn't notice much growth for the next few months, though it was starting to come back for the first 6 months of 2014. In the last 6 months of 2014, it started to come back a little faster. Now, at 26 months post op, it's almost all grown back. You can't see much of my scalp anymore except at the part. I never missed a day of Protein or Vitamins. I went to dermatologist, got shots in my head, topical solutions, and bought shampoos "systems" that cost hundreds of dollars - each. I do think that those products and trips to the doc did help, because that when things started turning around. The other thing that helped was increasing my calories to over 1000. I had a lot of weight to lose, so that contributed to the prolonged hair loss, I think. -
How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
Tiffykins replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
How much do you have to lose???? I had over 100 pounds to lose and around 5 months out I had dropped around 90-95lbs. There is no average since the percentage of weight loss is the primary indicator for weight loss surgery patients and not actual pounds lost. A patient that has 100+ pounds to lose might lose more number of pounds as someone with only 70 pounds to lose, but it's the percentage of weight loss is what is used to figured "average weight loss" for bariatric patients. -
I only lost 3 lbs from the time of my first post op appointment, to my first fill three weeks later. My nurse said: "Three pounds.... That's GREAT!!!" That still would be less than you've loss in a month. Focus on your accomplishments not your "apparent" failure. You're right on track.

Congratulations!10 pounds is not too shabby, especially in a months time! My doctor told me that I may not lose much until I start getting some fills. I had gained weight the first couple of weeks after surgery as it was a time for healing. You should not be shy or embarrassed about going back in, they should be your coach and cheerleader! Average weight loss should only be about 1-2 pounds per week. You are doing great!

Welcome to VST. It is a great community. I am glad to hear you are starting a cardio class. It will DEFINATELY make a difference. Not only with weight loss, but general attitude, too. I feel soooo good after a good sweat session. I had good sweat sessions when I was morbidly obese, but never felt good about myself. Now, I do. I hear you about moving off of liquids. After not eating anything resembling solids for so long, the thought of challenging your new tummy can be a little daunting. My advice is to just take things slowly. I think it is inevitable to push yourself too far. At some point, I think we all did at least once, just to see where the edge of the envelope is. If something doesn't feel right, stop. Be sure to chew slowly. Put your utensil down between bites. Don't drink while eating ... ya know. You just want your tummy to heal completely. Good luck and let us know how things progress.

Ok I haven't been on here for a few months. Since probably December. I've lost 45 since surgery, but have a total loss if 80lbs. I was worried about not losing enough after surgery(I'm currently 215 started at 294). My doctor at my 3 month check up said it was awesome. He said "l'm not worried about numbers, I'm worried about healthy habits." My triglycerides have improved to normal, which was my only comorbidity other than the weight itself. I hope everyone else is gaining the same success. I do mess up and have bad days generally towards my period (oh, my pcos has improved as well having a 28 day cycle). But I know I try to do well but I do have my days. I don't give up like I use to. I keep going! I'd upload pictures but I don't know how.

Hi all. I'm not sure if I'm panicking over nothing, but I thought I'd ask.... I'm 16 days out of surgery and I've lost about 30 lbs since I started my pre-op diet. However, I stopped losing weight 6 days ago--I haven't lost a single pound since Friday. I haven't been doing anything differently. I'm still on full liquids and I haven't introduced anything new into my diet. I've just been drinking Water, Protein shakes, and some low-sodium liquidy Soups. Is this something I should be concerned about? Is this normal? Shouldn't it be a steady, progressive weight loss? Or are all bets off for the first couple months?

First Digit of Weight is Finally a 1!
NewStarter posted a topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Today is such a happy day for me! Finally, I'm down into the 100s, and I don't ever want to go back to the 200s. My history is that of a "yo-yo" dieter. The last time my weight dropped below 200 was in 2008, and it only lasted a couple of months. (phentermine prescription weight loss program). I've been very eager to get here and frustrated because most of August for me was a "stall" period. My weight see-sawed around 204-202-204-203-202. The truth be told, a few weeks ago, I was probably taking in too many carbs and snacking a bit too much, but I also think right around the low 200s is kind of a "set point" for me. It just seems to be a threshold that's been hard to cross. What I did when I finally got disgusted at losing no weight was, for a couple days, go back to protein shakes and super-light fare... something like the soft and mushy diet of cream soups. After just a couple days, that seemed to "shrink" my sleeve a little, and it became easier to get full faster. So now, the scale is moving down again, with a 3 pound loss this week. I am SO DELIGHTED with the sleeve and the results I've seen. Being 54 years old, I am not seeing weight melt away super-quickly like some of the younger people, but almost every week since the surgery (except for the August fluctuation) has brought me closer to my goal. I feel so, so, so much better! I don't dread getting dressed in the morning. My clothes are starting to fit again and hang right on me. I no longer wear black stretch pants every day. My life no longer revolves around being obsessed with what there is to eat in the refrigerator or whether I can get away with hitting the drive-thru at 3 in the afternoon. And, my husband is starting to be proud of me again. I'm so glad to have done this. It was expensive but worth every cent of the cost. My next goal is to weigh less than my husband (he weighs about 190). Yippee!! Happy Day!! -
Wow Damo you've had quite an experience. I'm glad you are starting to feel better. Congratulations on your loss so far

I have had my gallbladder removed, and also have back issues due to my chest size. I figured my back issues would get better with the weight loss in my chest. Maybe I just need to give it more time.

My guess is hormones. Your body just went through a major trauma and is probably going a little haywire. Fat loss also results in tons of hormones releasing from said shrinking fat cells. Sebum, the naturally occurring substance that provides oil to the hair, is produced by the sebaceous glands in the scalp and throughout the body, providing moisture to the skin, keeping Water in and fending off bacteria. For teenagers and young women with oily hair, overactive hormones may result in equally overactive sebaceous glands. This also may occur in menopausal women because of the transition their bodies are undergoing.

How to stop weight lost.
Trayjay33 replied to foodfighter78's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
@@foodfighter78, I'm glad to hear that today was a better day for you. The scale going down can get addictive. But remember the alternative of continued weight loss possible G-tube, etc. it's not worth it. You will be fine and you have good reasons why you did this surgery just remember them.
