Why no preop diet?
laceemouse replied to teacherjen's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon only does a 3 day pre-op diet, and I can have yogurt, low fat Soup, and cottage cheese as well as Protein shakes, etc. He does a liver biopsy during surgery because most obese people have a fatty liver. I don't know if I have one now, I wonder how many people even know before surgery? Is there any other way to diagnose it?? -
Failure, forgiveness & getting real

I concur. Eat! Eat your protein! Are you tracking your Protein and calorie intake? And if not, how do you know what you need to do to get your weight loss moving again? You're at the 'easy' 65-70% of weight loss that's touted as the average loss with WLS. To get to the goal line, you've got to work harder and smarter. Your body is now complacent, and you need to shake things up. Increase protein, fluids, calories and activity. Eat ONLY lean protien and veggies with every meal and only protein rich Snacks like cheese, nuts, Jerky and greek yogurt. Get rid of the sugar and carbs. Try to steer clear of processed food. Everyone is different, but at a year out you should be at at least 1000-1100 calories and 80-90 grams of protein. You follow those guidelines, and I gaurantee you'll get to where you want to be in no time. If you really want it, you get there. -
How did you survive the postop 2 week liquid diet
bitingcat replied to Meggiesmom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Variety? I really liked hot bone broth (fairly high in protein) and would get different flavors or have my husband doctor it up and strain it. chicken bone broth simmered with a Parmesan rind; beef bone broth with a spoon of miso paste stirred in after heating (bonus probiotics); or some of the flavors like chicken and ginger, maybe with a splash of soy. He'd put it in a thermos for me and I'd just work on drinking a couple of ounces at a time for hours. If I was having a hard time with Protein, he'd add extra Gelatin to the Soup. I should have seen if the Pho place could have sent plain broth... I also liked the ... Sleepytime Peach Tea, maybe? I think it was Celestial Seasoning. It was chamomile and peach, with a little mint that soothed the stomach. No protein, but good for staying hydrated. Hot liquids were a lot easier in my stomach, though I also threw in a teaspoon of collagen powder sometimes. If you're low on calories (and it's not a gateway drug, I mean food) you can always add a quarter teaspoon of raw honey. I also liked the Syntrax nectar fruit flavors, really watered down. They're just so much thinner than most Protein shakes and more like flavored Water. I also really liked the Ultima Replenisher (stevia sweetened/no cal) electrolyte powder for getting hydrated, and would sometimes add a scoop of the Syntrax Medical Unflavored. As I improved, I added Greek yogurt with a few drops of flavored stevia (couldn't stand it that way before) and kefir, sweetened the same way. Jello was great for mouthfeel, and Eggface has great recipe where she combines it with Greek yogurt for a creamy, jello salad kind of thing. You can mix Protein Powder straight into Greek yogurt (I think I used a Nectar fruit flavor) but it was a little thick/weird. Eggface also tells you how to mix SF pudding into protein powder to get it to set up. (Seriously, her website is bomb and she has a whole section on liquids and purées.) But yeah, an hour at a time and weeks of doing nothing but eating, drinking, and moving around to get rid of gas. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -
At your stage I ate a lot of soups with added protein powder. I add avocado to everything I can to incorporate healthy fat. I drizzle olive oil on anything I eat that it tastes good with. I love healthy fats and it's easy to get in calories with it. Fats are not evil if they are good fats. I add nuts to Greek yogurt and chia seeds to protein shakes and smoothies. It's easy to get to 1200 calories, even staying in plan with a restricted ability to eat. I make the calories healthy and count.

I am going to up my fluids even more see what happens. I drink one 30g Protein shake per day, and have a protein whip greek yogurt plus chicken, fish, and/or eggs for lunch and dinner. Still on soft foods for a few more days but I get at least 60g of protein a day per my tracking. As for weight loss, I think I am on track. I'm down 46# since pre-op diet started 09/19 and 34# since surgery 09/29. Thanks for your input.

What is on your Trader Joe's Shopping List?
Vinasu replied to OutsideMatchInside's topic in Food and Nutrition
TJ'S bruschetta was a staple during soft foods. They have single serving brie packages that I have to fight the kids for. Their fresh edemame is wonderful. I drink the kefir because it's significantly higher in Probiotics than yogurt. Their roasted seaweed is a delicious, low calorie, savory snack. And I adore their riced cauliflower. Their creamy tomato Soup got me through liquids. I also buy my sublingual B12 there. Sent from my SM-G925V using the BariatricPal App -
Cake or no cake? Cake substitution?
florence_faerie1515 replied to Boudala's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Happy early birthday! I had my surgery October 7, the day after was my 35th birthday. I get it. I'll be having a birthday celebration this weekend with family, cake free, and will probably put some pumpkin pie spice in my yogurt and call it a day. The surgery is my birthday gift to myself and I don't want to do anything to ruin it. I am looking at it as a tool to help me change my relationship with food and be healthy. Whatever you decide, I would suggest stay on your surgeon's recommended plan of what you can eat. If it'll be too tempting for you, I would ask to not even have a cake present. Maybe have a sugar free Jello or pudding as the dessert. Hopefully everyone in your circle will be supportive. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Full liquid suggestions?
Boudala replied to mollydeez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I was where you are now... I was sleeved on 10/6. I ditched all the Protein that everyone suggest prior to. I went and got the pre-made premiere shakes which were a lot more palatable and easier to get down. And one 11oz shake has 30g of protein! But you can now make low fat yogurt smoothies... you can do cream soups strained ... it's going to get better I promise. Cottage cheese... I swear I can say I was you. It will get better. Hang in there! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Heightened smells and gag reflex
melrey521 replied to sarahblu's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 1 month post op and feel the same way. I am at my breaking point today because whatever I try to eat grosses me out from the smell. I am struggling with meat and can not eat cottage cheese or eggs which I use to love. I am snuggled in bed knowing I ate yogurt for Breakfast and a tablespoon of mashed potatoes for lunch. I attempted chicken for dinner and couldn't get through the first bite. Please say this gets better?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Has anyone tried the baked parm zucchini "fries"?
QueenOfTheTamazons posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I used to love fried zucchini with ranch. I thought the parm zucchini fries with a greek yogurt ranch would be a diet friendly way to get similar flavors. Anyone try the parm fries? How did they come out? Flavor and in apperance/texture. HW 385 SW 359 Sleeved 10/5/16 -

PorkChopExpress replied to mollydeez's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
There are other options for protein. Get some of the flavorless powder like Genepro and mix it with other liquid stuff you're eating, like yogurt or even Crystal Light. It works well and gives you a nice change from those shakes. I agree, after four weeks of almost nothing but shakes, I was ready to be done with them. -

@@PLEZ Can I ask why it's not cutting it? Are you hungry? Before my op I did my research on the highest Protein sources and I keep a list in my journal for easy reference. For Snacks I would recommend Greek yogurt, a hard boiled egg, 1/2 cup cottage/ricotta cheese, or edamame... I don't think there is anything wrong with snacking on a few nuts BUT almonds are 3.9 grams of protein per 20 gram serve which is around 120 calories. Plain low fat Greek yogurt however is 16.5 grams of protein for a whole tub and depending on what brand, is around the same calories as 20g of nuts. So you're getting 16.5g protein vs 3.9g for the same calories, and yogurt will fill you longer. *sorry for the novel :/ Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

How do you take medication post op?
RonnieBob replied to bostonmama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was advised to take them with unsweetened applesauce, however, I soon began to add them to Oikos Triple Zero Greek Yogurt and that added an extra 15 grams of Protein in the morning and another 15 grams in the evening. I have a mix of pills with some needing to be taken in the morning and others at night before I go to bed. -
This is that time post op when everything begins to change. Firstly the first 6 months portions change from 1/2 cup to more like 3/4 to a full cup. In addition you begin to recognize slider foods. I am two years post op and usually consume 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups of food depending on what I am eating. I can eat more salad than meat but meat keeps me fuller longer even though i eat less of it. The things that fill me up and keep me full longest is: Full fat cheese lunch meats Dense meat like chicken breast and fish Nuts - however just a 1/4 cup and no more Cottage cheese Raw veggies and full fat ranch dip Salad with Protein on top like chicken or cottage cheese Foods that seem to slip right through Yogurt Protein shakes Any carb items that I shouldn't have anyway and try to avoid pudding Every once in a while I have a bowl of Cereal and talk about being hungry again in 20 minutes.....i keep that to maybe once a week if that.

Beware.....scolding in progress. Here's the thing, you just had major surgery on your stomach. No matter how bad the head hunger is, do you really think eating chocolate at all is wise a few days after surgery? I am guessing your answer is no or you would not be on here in scared mode. Honestly you should be scared. You should pick up the phone and immediately call your therapist. Having WLS is 90% head, 10% if that surgery. You can eat around your surgery from day one. and if you do, why bother going through all the pre work and pain? That is called self destruction and you need to get a handle on it now. For me, sugars cravings have never gone away. I have had to learn to deal with this. Sometimes you give in and have something but never ever just when you get home from the hospital. Lastly I would say that baby food does not have the nutrition that homemade prepared purees have. Not to mention they taste like crap unless you are eating all the fruits which have carbs in them. Why not simply make some of your own purees, eat greek yogurt, cottage cheese, Protein shakes, ricotta bake. There are a ton of bariatric friendly pureed stage options available on pinterest. I really wish you the best but you are definately going to need some help to get your head hunger under control. When those cravings come up the best thing you can do is try to get your mind off of it. Firstly, you cannot possibly be feeling real hunger at this stage. Dehydration mimics hunger for us. So if you feel it keep sipping your approved liquids until that feeling goes away. If you have met your liquid goals and still feel that way, you are likely feeling some reflux if you are a sleeve patient. If not those two things it is definately head hunger and you need some coping mechanisms. I use distraction techniques....go wash dishes, do some laundry, take a shower, do something with your hands like crafts - knitting, crocheting....etc. get your mind off of food. Lastly do NOT watch food porn shows or commercials, they can make head hunger terrible. Go see a therapist they will provide lost of techniques and get at the bottom of why you are already self sabotaging.

Questions to the ones who Had GASTRIC BYPASS!

I'm still waiting for approval and my date too.. I'm not "freaking out" exactly but the thoughts have been in the back of my mind.. But Monday I started a 2 wk preop diet the doc wants me to do for 4 weeks and it's not going so bad.. I have a very small selection I can chose 6 serv a day from.. But no meat.. Drinking all my Protein.. I figure I quit cigz cold turkey because I want this that bad.. I got this! And I feel like reading these forums have helped me wrap my head more around it already.. WE got this! Munky I had a very similar pre op. 4 Protein shakes a day 6 servings of : yogurt, applesauce, sf pudding, oatmeal, v8 juice. Then unlimited non starchy veggies and 80 Oz fluids. As far as gas pains go I had some of the worst. They got stuck in my ribs and didn't want to move. I am now dealing with some major back pain that has sidelined me the last 2 days. I'm 4 weeks post op As far as hunger goes I'm dealing with a lot of head hunger and wanting to push myself faster to healing. I've been allowed to resume working out slowly. But I have to consume more than 800 calories a day to workout. With the pain I'm not getting in nearly as much as I need. Sent from my SGH-M919 using the BariatricPal App -
Is that something you can get at the grocery? Haven't seen them yet, would be interested to try them. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App Yes, at the grocery. I'm still trying to find protein I can tolerate. Greek yogurt is definitely a good source. I also use chicken Soup unjury. Everything else tastes like a sickly sweet vomit. Makes me nauseous as soon as it hits my stomach. I have nectar coming. Fingers crossed.

I've noticed that I feel hungry a lot. I'm 6 month post op RNY. I used to drink a Protein powder with milk and coffee in the morning but I've switched to having an egg with toast or yogurt with fruit, etc. but I've noticed I've been snacking a lot and I'm nervous about my increased appetite. What are some suggestions for foods that keep you feeling full? I actually consumed 1700 calories yesterday vs my average 900-1100 calories. Yikes! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Unless you have complications there is no reason you *need* to follow up with a bariatric surgeon. I don't know anyone who had surgery in Mexico who does. The standard advice I have seen is to see your PCP at 2 months, 6 months, and 12 months post-op. Have your regular blood and urine tests as well as vitamin and mineral levels checked. Weight and blood pressure checked and recorded. The lab work, without insurance, is what may kill you cost-wise. You may need to do some serious shopping around for that, but it's important. As far as food goes, I'm not much help as I tend to focus on eating for nutrition rather than to stave off boredom. I really don't care if I eat the same things over and over again, so I don't ever really think about "new ideas" for food. That said, here's mostly what I ate during weight loss phase: breakfast: chicken or beef roll-ups in romaine lettuce (with pickle relish, hot mustard, etc.) lunch: chopped chicken breast with green veggies and a little light salad dressing dinner: poached egg on refried beans, tuna salad bake, lamb chops, steamed curried scallops, steamed cayenne pepper shrimp, chicken breast baked in yogurt, turkey-spinach-goat cheese burger patty, sardines in mustard. Good luck!

How do you take medication post op?
elizabetholiver replied to bostonmama's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 3.5 weeks out and can swallow small pills. I first started with cutting them in half. I couldn't stand crushing them. I have one that i have to open (capsule) and i mix it in lemonade. You could also try mixing it into applesauce, yogurt, Jello, etc liz -
Well, glad to hear you are doing so well. In terms of Protein there are other ways to get it besides meat. Try Beans, cottage cheese, greek yogurt, Protein shakes. When you do try meats, make sure they are really moist and chew well. Take small bites. For me fish and chicken were the two meat items that worked the easiest but I had to cook them just to done and not over cook. Lastly its good that you cannot eat rice, Pasta or bread. They will actually stall you. You should be staying away from those items at least until you hit goal and then introduce them back slowly and minimally. For your carbs you should be focuse on veggies and a small amount of fruit.
