  1. Post op Day 20...

I haven't posted an update for a few days because I was feeling blue. Mostly TBH- having a pity party because the scale had not moved in a few days. I also was reading too many post on here and sometimes I would compare myself to others, or chastise myself for not counting the calories more. But honestly most of the food I I have been eating is at 1/2 a cup or less. I have found for me to get in my protein I am needing to continue to drink at least 1 Premier Protein drink  a day. Sometimes I also add an isopure, because I am so scared of not meeting that goal. Plus I noticed some hair coming out in the shower...not much. But it has been soooo long since I lost hair (to be exact since 2010 when I had my son) My husband has been so helpful...and encouraging. Last night I made vegetarian chili with three different types of beans. It was much more satisfying then having a little bit of sweet potato (which I never liked until after surgery) I do not really care for my post op diet. It has me eating a lot of  low fat cheese/ diary products and beans. I am not really a fan of diary to begin with. I am just getting tired of not having real protein I suppose. I am ready for some grilled chicken!! On a side note after I cooked dinner and read my son a book I got on the treadmill....I am noticing I cannot walk as long (my back starts killing me and my tummy hurts) but at least I walked. I know this isn't very motivational but I want to remember the highs and lows.

Hang in there! The further out you go and as you have more options for food it gets so much better. Everyone has their own journey, and even though comparing is understandable since so many people post their food/weight/workouts, you gotta focus on how much better you are doing since preop. That is the comparison that matters IMO.

Today I was out and went to Boston market the onl u pureed they had was mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes which both I didn't want. I order the kid size turkey with gravy. I mashed it to pieces and chewed into I wanted to gag to ensure it was liquidfiedl. I got down a few bites without no problem.

  2. Sure.

I'm vegetarian (but eat fish) so I don't eat any meat products at all.

    On Tuesday, I ate:

    Breakfast:

One cup of coffee with a tablespoon of sugar free vanilla caramel creamer

2 ounces of Cracker Barrel Extra Sharp Cheese

    Lunch:

1 Amy's Texas Veggie Burger Patty (plain, no bun or anything)

    1 medium Kiwi

    ...

  3. Hey there! Yea for March 31sters! Yes, I am on a stair-step diet. Right now I can have stuff like yogurt, milk, creamy soups, protein shakes, etc. On Wednesday, I get to have scrambled eggs and oatmeal, mashed potatoes! WOW I can't wait for that, lol. You know, I could never be a vegetarian, I miss meat :)

So, how did your surgery go? Mine, being the first surgery I have ever had was smooth as silk! Pain was minimal, tolerable. I went back to work yesterday, maybe a little too much excitement, but doing o.k. You?

  4. Well, I let my Food MOnster have free reign tonight. I told him this was the last time and we shook on it. I ate and ate and ate. And now, I am done and I feel sick. Meanwhile, the best tasting protein bar I have ever had is SUPREME protein. They are awesome. I have to get some because I start my pre-op diet in the next couple of days. Just waiting for it to come in the mail. Supposedly low-fat veg. I was surprised by this since most people had low-carb, then liquids. But I guess my doc thought I was still a vegetarian since I had mentioned 13 past years of it. Anyway surgery scheduled for Nov 30th! Faster than I thought.

  5. Hey! Nov. Bandster here :) I read that you drink Almond milk and I just wanted to say so do I (by choice) I am a vegetarian and I try to not drink dairy (I'm not perfect) but I'd love to become a vegan some day. Anyways, I drink almond milk, and hemp milk, and rice milk etc.

    When's your surgery date?

    Any vegetarians?

Hi there, I am a vegetarian and was banded on 3/11/09. I guess you need to decide how "vegetarian" you want to be. Some people eat just chicken or fish and no other meat. Some choose to eat dairy, and some use the soy products for their dairy. I don't eat any meat whatso ever, but Ill use skim milk and egg beaters. When I can eat solid food, Ill use the soy burgers (Boca Burgers or Veggie Burgers) and different legumes for my protein. I would recommend reading up on it as much as possible. There is a book available in the public library's called " Vegetarian Book for Dummies" its a really good book and has lots of information, it was one of the best books I read when I made the transition.
  7. I'm 9 months post op, 98 lb. weight loss and was feeling wonderful until last Monday. I had just had my Dr. visit on Friday, and everything was great! Except my hair loss is getting worse and so noticeable:( Has anyone had success with stopping hair loss? After dinner on Monday night I had a trip to the ER after having a severe gall bladder attack. I thought I was having a heart attack! So scary! It has calmed down, am now following a vegetarian diet plan. I see my surgeon on Wed. so I guess the decision will be made about GB surgery. As of now, I don't know how many gallstones I have. My regular doctor told me one was 4 milliliters. I would live to hear from any fellow gastric sleevers who have had these problems too.
  8. I will be in Mexico this time next week! I am so excited! I started my pre-op today, i am a vegetarian....so high Protein low carb is SOOOOO hard for me! I had about 40 carbs today....pretty good for a start i think....it's so hard, but i can do it. I can't even begin to imagine life afterwards, I hope to be so much happier and healthier! Thank you to everyone for the encouragement and advice! Anyone have any last minute tips....or maybe a list of must-haves for the hospital??? Love to all of you!
  9. Whenever I visit my friend, a former vegetarian, he often makes this for a light supper or late night snack. It has become one of my favorite dishes, so I decided to try to make it WLS friendly. I plan to try it once I get to the soft food stage. I hope you like it! Chick Peas Gratin 1 15oz can Chick Peas, drained 1/2 Medium Chopped Onion (about 1/4 cup) 1/4 c. Chopped Celery 1/4 c. Chopped Bell Pepper 1/2 c. No Sugar Added Tomato Sauce 1/2 c. Canned chicken Breast, drained 1/4 c. Low Fat Shredded cheese Drain and rinse the chick peas until they are no longer "foamy" Chop all vegetables finely. (For the mushy stage, I plan to saute them until soft in a little chicken or vegetable broth) Drain the chicken. (I listed canned chicken as my surgeon allows it during the mushy stage, but left over baked or grilled chicken, chopped, could work as well.) Mix all together with the tomato sauce in a shallow casserole dish. You may use a bit more of the tomato sauce, it is used just to coat everything and provide a little bit of cooking liquid. Add salt and pepper to taste. Top with cheese and bake at 350 until the cheese is bubbly and the chick peas are cooked through, about 15-20 minutes. Enjoy! The original recipe calls for A LOT more cheese and does not contain chicken. I added the chicken to up the Protein and cut back on the cheese for obvious reasons. :biggrin2: You can season this with salt, pepper or even a little garlic, basil or oregano, as per your tastes. I ran this through a recipe builder to get the nutrition info and for four servings, this is what I came up with: Calories 219, Carbohydrates 28, Protein 14 Fat 5 This used only "generic" brands and NSA Tomato Sauce was not an option, so you may want to check it against the nutrition values of the brands you use.
  10. Hello All, I am having my vsg on April 7th and am looking for a mentor who is a vegetarian and/or interested in organic foods. I myself am a pescatarian (my main source of Protein is fish) who also eats eggs/dairy as long as they are humane-certified. Anyone who can share their tips/knowledge will be very much appreciated! Blessings, Denise
  11. As a vegetarian I eat mostly veggies and fruits (salads) but this chart I came accross shows that there are PLENTY of alternative Protein sources that DO NOT require you to eat animal meat, dairy and the like- It was more of an FYI for previous nay-sayers... I agree the morningstar things are very good as are the boca and other brands- Great things have come to fruition on the world of vegan/vegetarianism....
  12. I hear ya!!! I can not stand to drink another nasty shake and I am a vegetarian to boot. I got Isopure non-flavored protein poser and mix it into a cup of decaf coffee. It is an instant 26 grams of protein. I also love for Jamba Juice...I get the pure fruit smoothies with a double shot of protein.
  13. Just add what you like. I start with Isopure unflavored - 26gms Protein, add anywhere from a whole to half cup of FAGE 0% greek yogurt 23 -12gms protein. Maybe a ¼ cup of Water to help blend. Then toss in anything you want. tbsp almond butter, a dash of cacao(chocolate) powder, some fruit, some chopped spinach. It's a big protein boost to start the day and takes the pressure off the rest of the day. My big meals are Breakfast and lunch because I am most active those times of day so if my calories go a little higher I am more likely to burn them off. Most evenings my dinner is a small vegtable salad with black Beans and an egg as my protein or Soup with a half a scoop of Isopure added. I've never been an evening/late night snacker. I might have a cup of tea or some fruit in the evening but often I don't have anything. I don't know if it's because I am a vegetarian or not but my calories tend to be a lot lower than most people's are at 6 months. I still get in between 700 - 900 calories a day. I don't think Larabars are really high in protein. I think at most they have between 9 -11gms of protein. I just keep those and nuts(typcally almonds or pistachios) in the car for on the go days so I don't turn to fast food. French Fries are my weakness. This was another thing I started doing pre WLS.
  14. Well... I have to have my Gallbladder removed on Tuesday.. It's full of stones and is only functioning @ 30%. I have a constant pain on the right side under my rib cage. Sometimes when I eat I get sharp, stabbing pain.. So I'll finally give in. Did it hurt as much as the sleeve? Is it pretty much the same as the sleeve? Just going home earlier? Are there certain foods you can't eat anymore? If so, why? I've a vegetarian so I get A LOT of my Protein from cheese... will that be a problem? Any any other tidbits you would like to share... Thank You!!! -Kelli

    3 meals a day

My doctor does not want us to have shakes at all. LOL! I'm a vegetarian, I may need to drink the shakes secretly. Every doc is different.

    Meats

I am a vegetarian and haven't had any problem with any vegetarian forms of protein--you can do tofu, tempeh, Morningstar soy products, Greek yogurt, low-fat cheese, etc.

    Any vegetarians?

I'm semi-vegetarian, pescetarian - I eat fish and eggs but no meat. I have to stay away from dairy too because I'm lactose intolerant. I'm a week away from transitioning to whole foods and still on soft food but here are some meal ideas. At each meal I have one of 3 proteins: eggs, Beans or fish. - last night I adapted a recipe for lentil meatballs, haven't tried them yet, but they look good. Google NYT veggie balls. I omitted the parm and used chickpea flour instead of breadcrumbs, and almond meal instead of walnuts. (I made them soft by then leaving overnight in tomato sauce.) - omelette with 1 oz of sauteed veggies - premake the veggies for the week - like a batch of sauteed mushrooms, onions and spinach - chickpea flat bread - made with chickpea flour which is 100% beans, no grain. I make it thicker and cook it less than recipe so it stays soft - google chickpea bread and a ton of recipes will pop up. then I eat it with a side of veggies - poached fish in coconut curry sauce with 1 oz of veggies on the side. sooo easy, veg broth, a can of coconut milk and some curry paste in a deep frying pan. when at a simmer, add fish. As soon as I'm ok'd for solid food, I'll go back to roasting veggies like broccoli, cauliflower, fennel, asparagus, and brussels sprouts in the oven. I love the way they get caramelized and it is so easy, drizzle with olive oil and salt, put em in the oven and walk away. In the meantime, I've been boiling or steaming veggies and then drizzling them with a tsp of flavored olive oil - i have a lot of flavors: garlic, lemon, rosemary, cilantro. There is an olive oil store near me and the quality and flavor are great.
  18. Hello, sleevers! I am so happy I found this place and looking forward to sharing our journeys. I've been overweight for 30 years (since age 8), but never considered WLS. I've gone on every diet, tried every weight loss med, been a vegetarian, a raw foodist, and an exercise nut. I never lost more than 15 pounds. I am capable, however, of gaining 30 pounds in a month. I do not have PCOS, thyroid issues, or even insulin resistance - my body just doesn't want to let go of weight. Most recently, I spent four months in residential treatment for binge eating disorder, where I was treated like an anorexic. They took away all my exercise (had JUST gotten into a regular cardio/resistance routine), told me it was ok to eat Cookies, candy bars, and ice cream every day (so I did - all three - every day), and drilled into me that there was no reason to be afraid of food (I never had been, other than the fear of not having enough). I gained 20 pounds in treatment and was told I hadn't gained at all (we were not allowed to weigh ourselves or know our weekly weights). The experience was great for my head, as I learned many valuable tools for dealing with my emotions, analyzing my thoughts and behaviors, and communicating with others, but bad for my body. I've gained 15 more pounds since leaving treatment in November. I still overeat - I just don't feel guilty about it anymore. I've never felt like a fat person and I know I'm not meant to be this heavy. Now I'm starting to have knee and back pain on a daily basis and I have bruises all over my body from bumping into things (I'm that unaware of my recently increased size). I resisted the idea of surgery because it was unnatural, like many people who've never struggled with weight, I thought I just wasn't trying hard enough. Then I realized it was no different from having LASIK or dental work; I am grateful for every day I wake up and don't have to put on glasses or deal with contacts to see, and I'm glad I have straight teeth, not the crooked, overcrowded mess that would have resulted if I'd never had those teeth pulled. Now I see WLS for what it is - a viable shot at freedom. Thanks for reading.

    LIQUID DIETING - arrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhh

Well I don't think anyone is reading this blog but I figure that is OK .. it's somewhere to come and vent .. I love reading the other posts though and it's kinda cool to be ahead of some people now rather than before when I was pre surgery and completely new to this. It's now 10 days since I had surgery and I am still on a liquid diet as per instructions. I tried soup but I really dont like soup and so I am eating err drinking Sustagen which is kinda nice and Optifast and I have been sneaking a banana into that shake as it's 'anything you can drink with a straw' right and so I like having the banana. Having jelly and diet custard etc . I am not really that hungry and I have lost 29.4 pounds to date. Which feels good but also doesn't feel like I've made much change but then that's because I am morbidly obese not just fat. If I was a skinny minny I think 10 kilos would sure make a difference but now I find my rings fit better on my hands and some shirts I stopped wearing I can now button up and they look nice. So I guess it's small steps for now. I am a bit over the liquid diet but that can stop next Tuesday I think after I see my surgeon. I have tinned spadghetti all ready to squish up and have and I am not craving meat at all .. I was thinking of becoming a vegetarian just to avoid all the issues with trying to chew meat. I love fish and I could have eggs etc just no red meat perhaps? Thats what I am thinking anyway. Some days I have drunk a lot of my shake and it feels like I've overeaten so it IS a case of really watching what you consume. I was worried about the fill and how it feels but there is a great You Tube lady who posts under the name 'thebandinme' and she speaks about fills in one of her many videos and she's so upbeat and positive that I am no longer worried but actually see it like she does as a way to control and be in control of my health and what I eat. Good luck to anyone getting banded this week 10 days into it and for minimal pain, minimal discomfort and small adjustments to the way I eat it's really not been such a hard road as yet and I am hopeful it never will be
  20. Hi I just wanted to follow up with you. We have really similar stories and I can completely relate! I’m 36, currently 202 lbs (after WLS), I was NEVER a meat eater and was a carb/snack Queen. Anemic, a mostly vegetarian but on a non balanced diet just ate all the wrong stuff. Nobody though I “needed” WLS, but I felt old, tired, loss of energy and my happiness was slowly slipping away. I needed naps, and always was exhausted beyond belief. I didn’t see how I could make all the changes, I was already too tired! I made a decision to set my mind and commit 100% to this process. Yes I had doubt moments beforehand but I dismissed them and followed everything that was asked me to. Once I started the protein supplements I felt great! I didn’t realize my way of eating was making me feel so terrible. I’m 1 1/2 weeks post op and never felt better. I track everything, my energy is up and my addictive hunger cues are silent. Yes there’s pain, there’s intense recovery but I couldn’t be happier. If you want this, tell yourself you can’t fail, put a positive mind on and don’t look back. If it’s not for you, there is great info from nutritionists that’ll help you fix your diet and feel better. Best of luck to you.

    Day 2: Pre-op Diet

June 14, 2008 Down 4 pounds in 24 hours is quite amazing to me, however, I realize that the pounds are going to just drop off here at first. Yesterday was my first day on a Pre-Op two week diet. I had 1 Slim Fast Optima, 1 Weight Control Quaker Oatmeal, a serving of grapes, 1/2 an apple, 1 can of vegetarian vegetable soup, one 8 oz glass of skim milk with a packet of Carnation Instant Breakfast (no sugar added) mixed in, and 1 cup of no-fat cottage cheese. Oh and of course plenty of water, which I love. Actually, it wasn't so bad. I kept myself busy with reading, computer work, laundry. That's the key. I need to redirect my life. I'm looking into starting my own web site so that will take some time. This morning I got up at 7:00 and took a walk with the dogs. We walked down to the pond, which is a little ways away, downhill. The dogs loved the water and romped and played. So they got their exercise too. The trudge back up the hill was a killer, but I know it will get easier with time. If I consider my alternatives, (heart attack, stroke, diabetes, death), I rather like this hiking up and down hills. The Slim Fast tasted better this morning: Strawberry Cream, which I thought would be delicious, turns out NOT to be. Plus I had a yogurt, Activia, which I didn't get in yesterday. All the foods I mentioned are all that I will eat for the next two weeks. This was given to me by the dietitian. Why, I bet I lose 20 pounds even before surgery! The dietitian explained to me that the reason for this diet is to help the liver to lose weight. Fatty tissue built up around the liver is not good and hinders absorption of proper nutrients. I know there is more to it than that. I will need to research that again. So, I'm off and running. Well, actually, not running yet. That will come later, I hope.
  23. How do others do with being vegetarian when getting the gastric sleeve surgery? Any other forums or places to get advice out there?
  24. This is one of my favorite warm-weather recipes. The prep's a bit tedious, but you can cut up all the ingredients at once and store them in the fridge in tupperware for several days to make fresh rolls in 2 minutes whenever you feel like it. You will need: grilled or boiled pork tenderloin, thinly sliced, with each slice cut lengthwise once again cooked shrimp - shelled and cut in half lengthwise cucumber - cut into matchsticks carrots - cut into matchsticks fresh basil - just the leaves fresh mint - just the leaves cooked rice stick noodles rice paper peanut sauce - you should be able to find this at any Asian grocery store or in the International Foods aisle at Walmart or other big grocery stores. You can also make your own, it's fairly straightforward, just Google it. Get a decent-sized working space, arrange all the ingredients within reach, and fill up a big bowl with warm Water. Put a sheet of rice paper in warm water for about 1-2 minutes until it's completely wet and pliable. Be careful handling them, they can tear easily. Spread the sheet of rice paper on the table and arrange all the ingredients (minus the sauce, of course) lengthwise. Example here: chicken and shrimp, just chicken, grilled fish, or you can make vegetarian/vegan options and add avocado or grilled tofu. If you are going to make a bunch ahead of time and store them, it's best to wrap each individual roll in saran wrap - otherwise, the rolls will stick to each other and tear when you pull them apart.
