    Dang my mouth is dry

I'm home and high as a kite on pain meds. Pretty sore but it wasn't too bad. They did use general anesthia instead of just a local with sedation. He went in thru the same incision site so that was nice. It turned out to just be a kinked tubing. He removed the scar tissue and unkinked it. And bonus - he did a fill right on the table. Can't tell much but I feel a bit full on half a yogurt. Seems to be staying down fine. Hard way to get a fill but glad it's done. Thank you all for your prayers and well wishes. It helps so much to know you have such good friends on your side.

    Protein Only

I avoid starches and added sugars, not all carbs. I choose yogurts, etc. with the highest protein to carb ratio. Danon Light and Fit Greek, Fage, etc.

Wow really? I still have to have liquids. Though I mix a lightly sunny side egg up now in my cream of wheat cause I hate cream of wheat and that actually is good. No broth for me. The sodium content is out of control and I don't want to retain Water. I have 1/2 cup of Greek yogurt with cinnamon, 1/2 cup cream of chicken Soup ( tonight I did cream of potatoe with pepper and garlic powder yum!), sugar free Jello snack pack, two six ounze skim milk cellucor Protein shake and 1/4 cup of cream o wheat. I eat a TON of sugar free Popsicles and super cold crystal light. I try and walk as much as I can a day. Day 2 was a block but day 8 I can do 1/4 mile. I sleep majority of the time. I can't wait for baby food in a week and have a variety up in here! 23 lbs today!! Day 9

    Come on June 8th

@@alindsey June 2nd here and I am ridiculously excited. Right now I'm in the "try it before you buy it" stage...or should I say try it before investing in a 60lb tub of it. LOL Two months ago I started "training" myself to like yogurt and that has been going very well. I started with the yummy whipped sugary and have worked my way to down to plain greek yogurt with a bit of flavored crystal light powder stirred it. It has become a "habit" now and I can now relax about greek yogurt being a part of my daily menu...without wanting to gag! I'm working through some unjury packets that I bought to try...and they are tasty and mix up beautifully. I really like the chicken flavored broth! I'm also working through some Syntax nectar flavor samples...Fuzzy Navel is yum yum yummy! I want to make sure I make it through the pre/post-op liquid stage without having to think too much. I just want to be able to go to my kitchen and know whatever I grab to pour in me tastes good. I'm not waiting to be in the middle of it to have to figure it out!

    So THIS is restriction...

Got my second fill last Friday, and what a difference!! I can feel yogurt and shakes going down now. I was able to eat broccoli, chicken, chili, and pickles before, but I doubt I'll be able to next week, when I go back to solids. I foresee a lot of liquids in my diet for the next few months.

Vitamin D deficient and anemic. Yikes

Yes, they started me on a weekly Vitamin D supplement. Yogurt is very slow for me to go down. I can eat it for a snack over a period of 10-15 minutes or so, but not with a regular meal.
  7. I really despise the taste of Protein powders. I've tried several brands and they all smell and taste like formula. We can't get Isopure in Canada and I've really been struggling with protein intake so I've started to make my own. It's around 370 calories but it makes a lot and has 23g+ of protein and lots of fibre. 1/3 cup oatmeal (I grind it to powder in food processor and soak overnight in the milk) 1 1/2 cups skim milk 50g Greek yoghurt 1/2 cup frozen fruit 2tbsp ground flaxseed Blast it in the blender and drink it all day. I only use a little yogurt because I don't like it. That and my allergy to cheese are the main reasons I'm struggling with protein. I find that it's sweet enough as is but you could add some stevia, honey or agave if needed.

    Pre-Op Diet

I was told the point is to drink liquids/shakes. The liquid process is for the liver to shrink, so that they can perform the surgery more effectively. Additionally, to train you to survive off of liquids post-op. I was told that even though you are on a liquid diet you should still try to drink as close to 1,200 calories as possible. so 3 shakes at 160=480cal. And last thing they also told me that I can have some limited things; like vegetables (once a day), yogurt, cottage cheese. oatmeal, everything has to be plain. no butter, seasonings, salad dressing, sugar, etc. I got a lot of info from the internet also. Search "shrink liver" Lastly, NO soda or caffeine.

Just had surgery yesterday - Pain, Food, Drinks

MOOD: Very positive:smile2: I had LAP-BAND® surgery yesterday, 11/9/09 at Lenox Hill Hospital. I weighed in about 11 lbs less than at my last doctor visit before surgery so I felt good about that. Surgery went smoothly - Dr. Roslin said it took 11 minutes - and I was in recovery before I knew it. The nurses were really great. Cute anesthesiologist too. Dr. Roslin told me he filled my band with 3ccs already. I walked out of the hospital with no problems early in the afternoon. So, what about pain? The pain yesterday was all related to the CO2 used to inflate the abdominal cavity. It felt like someone was pushing my lungs or standing on my chest. After a couple of percocets, it mostly went away. I did not get the shoulder pain that is common with laproscopic surgery and they used a local on the incision sites so nothing there beyond a twinge when the dressing pulled. Today, however, I've got muscle pain in my abdomen, diaphragm and neck and a sore throat and mouth, probably from the breathing tube. I am trying to get by with Aleve but if it doesn't subside I may go fill the percocet prescription. I just ate my first "solid" food since Sunday morning - 2 days ago. I had about 2.5 ounces of fat free greek yogurt with 1/2 packet of Equal mixed in. I served it in a children's bowl and ate it with a small coffee spoon, like the kind you get with espresso. It only took me 10 minutes to eat it and I was trying to go slowly. No pain yet so I guess I did it right. The temptation to drink something while eating is very strong. I think this might be the hardest thing for me when eating, especially since my throat is sore. We'll see. So, day one done. Day two off to a good start. I've got fat free cream of chicken soup lined up for lunch and dinner but I'm just not hungry enough to think about it right now. I'm sure it will be good though. And, my first protein shake is chilling now.

Day 3 post surgery and I think I've lost 5 lbs!

CURRENT MOOD:  My neck is feeling better after getting some percocet last night. I still have no idea what they did to it - maybe some vigorous adjustments when they put in the breathing tube? I did something wrong today. I'm not sure exactly what it was but probably coffee and vitamins at the same time. I took my time drinking the coffee and had only chewable bariatric vitamins...didn't matter. I got pain like really bad indigestion and it lasted and lasted. Finally after a couple of hours I decided to try a little yogurt and that seems to have worked to cut the acid. I've just come back from a walk and think it may be the cure for gas. Had the best burp while out walking and felt instant relief. But, maybe I didn't take the surgery thing seriously enough - got a bit winded and sweaty and now feel more tired than I should from only walking a mile slowly. Hoping tomorrow will be better when I get to start the day with some food. It would be nice to poop again some day too.

    4 days post-op

Hi All, I had my surgery on Thursday, 10/15 - late in the afternoon (2PM). I stayed in recovery until 8PM when I was moved to my room. I was able to do a walk down the hallway and back at 10PM and began drinking Water as soon as I got into my room. I am thrilled to say I have had absolutely no adverse reactions. Sure I would get a little fluttering in my stomach and tad bit of nausea but never came close to feeling like I needed to throw up and the gas pains were minimal - I never exprienced the gas pains in my back or shoulders that others warned about. I was sipping decafe coffee, chicken broth, and Jello for Breakfast the next day and did two more strolls down the hallway. I was discharged at 4PM the following day and opted to walk out vs. using a wheelchair. I will admit that walking out of the hospital and into my house wore me out and made my legs weak for about 24 hours. I have continued to follow my doc's orders and diet. I began full liquids on day three - again no problem or reactions other than a little fluttering in my stomach which I took as a sign to stop eating. I've been eating cream of wheat (mixed with unflavored Protein poweder), greek yogurt, protien shakes, and homemade blendered tomato Soup (with protein powder). I even took a small trip to the grocery store (didn't drive) yesterday. Again it wore me out and I napped for 2 hours afterwards but then had plenty of energy after the nap. Overall I am extremely pleased with how my body is responding. I am giving a lot of credit to the fact that I am sipping the Isopure bottled clear Protein drinks for my main liquid intake - I even made jello and popsicles out it. I'm taking all my suppliments too. The only odd side effect I've had is taking my cholestrol meds - I take a lot - 3 different prescriptions but 6 pills in total. The first night I took them I spaced each pill out by 10 min but that didn't seem to be enough time as I was burping up a bad chemical/medicine taste about 30 min after taking the last pill. So now I spread them out throughout the day and have not had that problem. What about weight you ask? When I got home that next day I got on the scale and I was 5lbs heavier than when I went in for surgery - realizing it was mostly trapped gas and all the IV fluids in me I didn't freak out. As of today I am 5 lbs lighter than the day of surgery.

    getting enough protein.......

My doc has said 60-70 as well for protein intake. I plan 1 snack a day but again that was his instruction. I do have the unflavored protein powder from GNC. I do my best to get most of it via food .. eggs, quiche, tuna, cottage cheese greek yogurt however also add it to the cottage cheese, tuna, even DD ice tea.. it litterally has no flavor so I can make almost anything high in protein.

    getting enough protein.......

70? I guess different doctors recommend different amounts? My doctor said to shoot for 45 grams for non menstruating women and 55 for those who are menstruating. I eat a lot of chili - thats great protein! (large chili at wendy's has 28 grams) Also you can buy non flavored Protein powder at walmart and put it in anything...applesauce, yogurt, shakes, etc. I like to make a choc Peanut Butter shake with my herbalife choc mix, a tablespoon PB2 (powdered peanut butter - can use regular lowfat) and then add extra protein - it is like a heavenly chocolate dessert and I feel like I am getting something fabulous like dairy queen. LOL I use the vanilla herbalife shake and put in frozen fruit, skim milk, and extra Protein Powder, too. I know they tell us not to drink a lot of our protein - but I cannot eat more than a cup at a time and even then sometimes I can't eat much - so this is the only way I can get in my protein....and since I hit my "sweet spot" I am never hungry anyway... Good luck to you! Kim
  15. I was recommended to blend and strain lite soup, I did that for about 2 weeks post op and then went on to puree. I also had sugar free popsicles and light yogurt smoothies. It seemed to work good for me in the beginning. My problem started with the solid's.

    Post op nutrition

That completely depends on what foods your surgeon allows you to eat. 8 days post op I was allowed protein shakes, drinkable yogurt, and clear liquids. I had a protein shake for breakfast and dinner and strained clear soups for lunch. 10 days post op I was allowed to switch to strained cream soups. I really didn't bother with "snacks" because I wasn't hungry and because the sugar-free jello and popsicles I was allowed didn't have any calories, so why bother?

    is it normal~

I went to see him yesterday and he was concerned because I have been afraid to eat and drink...He said you have to get your protein in to heal...so today, I drank an 11 0z protein drink then a 12 oz diet iced tea, followed by the 5 oz yogurt..i did do it all slowly, waiting for a sense of fullness which never came...i dont know what is normal and what is not and havent had much help from the doc except a sheet of paper with a list of approved foods at different stages....
  18. to drink and drink and eat 5 0z of yogurt and not feel any kind of fullness at all at 9 day post op...Im nervous cuz I havent felt any kind of fullness since surgery...
  19. I'm coming up on a year with my Band and I feel terrific, having lost 60+ pounds. I'm at the perfect tightness and I quite think I'm going to maintain around this weight. My problem? I'm having trouble coming up with anything different to eat day-to-day! I have 2 Protein shakes, one for Breakfast and one mid-afternoon to make sure I'm getting my protein numbers. I DO generally have yogurt or a cheese stick mid-morning. Then I have a mini-meal at lunch (1/4 cup leftovers, i.e. baked Beans, spaghetti, sloppy joe) and about 15 wheat thins (or other crackers). My real problem is with dinner: I find I have such trouble with EVERY type of meat except ground meat--cannot do chicken, beef, or pork--and I am even at the point that I can't do refried beans. Of course, no breads, but I can easily do meatloaf, hamburger, sloppy joe, spaghetti, chili. But then I find myself eating potato chips and dip as a side dish! (They go down so easily!) My dear husband, who really really roots for me, even mentioned tonight how many times he's noticed that I'm eating chips and dip for dinner--and that can't be right--it's easy, but I KNOW I've got to get away from it! I have trouble with mashed potatoes and mac & cheese--should I just steam the heck out of vegetables? I'm still losing--but I KNOW I've got to go for nutrition. What do you long-time banders have daily?? :tt2:
  20. I am 3 1/2 weeks post op. I have never been one to nap and usually have good energy. However, for the last week and a half (since I went on pureed foods) I am struggling. Yesterday I slept so much I missed a meal and some liquids. I am bone tired. I am out of work until the beginning of January so I have time on my hands. This morning I slept until 1030. Usually I'm up by 730. I am taking all my Vitamins. I admit Protein has been a bit of a struggle so I have gone back to one Protein shake a day with added greek yogurt to up the protein grams. I am pretty close to 60 grams a day as recommended. I have been Water jogging with weights every day except today when I went in to lie down for about a half and hour and wound up sleeping 3 and a half hours. This is so not me. Anyone else experience this?

    Throwing up

I'm 14 days out and on purée. I agree getting my nutrition from food alone is just not possible. I still am having 2 Protein shakes a day giving me 40 grams of protein strait out of the bat. The foods that have worked best for me are Greek yogurt, tomato Soup, and puréed chili. But with those I only get between 50 to 100 calories per meal. My favorite Protein Shakes a unjury and chike. I found the. Both on amazon. I really look forward to them. Best of luck!
  22. With my anti-gall stone pill and Nexium pill I eat 2 bites of cottage cheese. Per surgeon I need to take with dairy. Breakfast is Protein shake Morning snack: eggs with canned ham, Rotel (canned diced tomatoes/green chilis), tiny bit of cheese. (I made a batch and portioned out a few days worth) Lunch: Deli ham, 1 slice provolone Afternoon snack: Ground beef with Rotel and taco seasoning Dinner: probably left over Rotisserie chicken and broccoli Earlier in the week DH and I went to Outback. I had the Ahi-Tuna appetizer and mixed veggies (broccoli, snow peas, carrots.) I stole 2 of his croutons and nibbled on them. During a snow day this week I had an Avocado baked with an egg in it. Didn't care for the taste. But it went down fine. Last Friday I made Shrimp Alfredo with Linguine. I use low-carb Pasta. I had a few shrimp, 3 noodles and some broccoli. I like egg salad or chicken salad. I mix the salad using Hellman's light mayo and fat free yogurt to keep the fat grams down. I add a tiny bit of Gulden's mustard to the egg salad. I just cannot stand fat free mayo. I also only like Hellman's. I have had chicken breast but it has to be pretty moist or it is tough to get down. Rotisserie tends to be good for that. It is harder to not get grilled breast to be too "dry". I have had crackers a few times over the last week. At most I will have 2 club crackers at a time with either the deli meat or the egg salad/chicken salad. I had salmon a few weeks ago. I have some tilapia in the freezer that I will eat some of this weekend. I had some fresh fruit this past week- strawberries, blue berries, orange wedge. I avoided the apple as it had peels on and was finely diced so no way to avoid the peels. I have not ventured into trying lettuce or raw veggies yet.

  24. I am 54 days out from surgery. I have lost 28 lbs since surgery. I went in for a check up on the 5th of this month. I received a 1/2 cc fill for the first time at that appointment and now I am more hugry, sooner, than I ever was before. Was getting the fill a mistake or is this normal? My doctor wanted me to eat more solid foods, he said I was still eating a lot of what he considred soft foods (i.e yougurt). I normally have yogurt for breakfast just out of convenience and time. I have since changed to having two eggs in the morning around 7-8 am and I am starving by 11-12. I try to eat fish or something high in protein and a vegtable for lunch and I am starving again by 3 in the afternoon. I will eat dinner between 4-5 in the evening and have again, something high in protein like chicken or fish again and a vegtable and I am again very hungry before bed. I measure my food and weigh it carefully but it just doesn't seem to be enough to last me. What should I do? The doctor doesn't want me to supplement with protein shakes. Which I though was a great idea to boost my protein intake and keep me satisfied. With the 3 meals I eat a day I am not always getting a full supply of the protein that they want me to get to. I am so confused and hungry! I need help!

    food

My typical day: Breakfast: 1/2 cup oatmeal with 1/3 cup egg whites cooked into the oatmeal with 1/8 cup blueberries, 2 pecan halves and 1 teaspoon raw sugar, substitute breakfast, Greek yogurt with 1/8 cup granola ( I love crunch) or small tortilla with egg whites scrabbled with some peppers, onions and tablespoon of cheese. ( I have an addiction for Starbucks SF Nonfat Carmel Machatta on the days I indulge I have my coffee and a protein bar) Snack mid morning: small protein bar or shake depending on how breakfast went or how busy my afternoon is going to be Lunch: 2-3 ozs of lean protein, turkey, chicken, pork. or fish. (early days I ate a lot of thinly sliced lunch meat, other meats were dry and got stuck. 1/2 cup green veggies, or a very small salad with oil and vinegar. If I am going to eat a starch this would be the meal I would do it. Mid afternoon snack, small apple or banana with 1 tablespoon of peanut butter or a protein bar. Depends on how portable I need my snack to be. Dinner: Again lean meet around 3 ozs and a veggie. Snack: 1/8 to 1/4 cup of almonds or sometimes 2 cups of popcorn. I have ate this way for over two years, I have always done snacks, I was never able to do just 3 meals. It took me months to work up to a 1000 calories a day and I try very hard to keep my calories around 1200. I am at goal and I still eat this way but now I try to hit 1400 to 1600 calories a day and yes I still weigh and measure my food and I still eat off a small plate with a big fork. I do not drink with meals. I do not deprive myself of anything I want, if I want something that is high calorie and not as nutritious, I eat it and adjust accordingly. I say that now but I am at goal, when I was trying to lose, I rarely indulged. I allowed my self one splurge meal a week on a Thursday. I find weekends, especially Sundays difficult and exercise was the key to continued successful weigh loss for me. Good luck and hope this helps.
