Well I met with my surgeon yesterday and I'm scheduled for surgery on April 26th. I'm extremely happy and nervous all at the same time. I already see a change in my attitude (I'm happier) just knowing I'm going to have a better and healthier future. But I do still question if im doing the right thing. Im not Severely overweight. Im 5'6" and weighed 218 yesterday. But Im have other health concerns and I'm trying to address this quickly instead of waiting. But With the what if's. What if Im the one out of so many with the complications. Like bad heartburn, I do some acid reflux now but I don't have to be on a daily medicine. The complications are scary but not living happy is scary too. I'm not trying to bring myself down. Did anyone have this scared feeling if your doing the right thing and come out of it with or without regrets

Good luck! I had gastric bypass on Monday -no complications so far! Have been in a great deal of pain because they kept giving me the wrong kind of pain meds. Finally got percocet and it has helped a lot. Will be going home today, Lord Willing! My very best wishes to you!! -
Bypass revision after sleeve? 8 years post op Sleeve
Tufflaw replied to Tink22-sleeve's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I was sleeved in Dec. 2016 and did extremely well at first - I dropped about 120 lbs in about 6 months, reaching my goal weight. I had some personal/professional issues including losing my job, starting and losing my business, health issues with my kids, etc. and I slacked off and just started eating like crap again and gained almost all the weight back. I had GERD both before and after the surgery but was maintaining it with esomeprazole. I got the revision to bypass in Nov, 2021 and as of today am down a little over 65 lbs. and the GERD is gone. As for your questions: 1) Your reasons for conversion from the sleeve to bypass. - My doctor said I was eligible for a second surgery and that he needed to do an endoscopy to see if the sleeve was dilatated (enlarged). If it was, I could resleeve or switch to bypass. If it wasn't, I'd have to go with bypass. They checked and it was enlarged so I could get either one but he recommended the bypass due to the GERD and potential future complications with long term use of the medication or effects to my esophagus from the GERD. 2) What was the post op period like compared with sleeve? - About the same. I think I felt a little worse right after the surgery because it was longer. My sleeve surgery was 26 minutes, the bypass was about 3 hours. It was supposed to be a little over an hour but there was an issue with one of the stapling devices not being able to reach a certain area so the doctor had to suture by hand which took longer. I believe I felt much groggier and a little more nauseous, but after the first day it was pretty much the same as the first time. 3) What is the best and worst part of having the bypass? - Best part is losing weight again and feeling healthier. Worst part was having to go through the surgery again due to my own screw up. Also this time they put a drain in my stomach for a week which wasn't fun. 4) Any dumping issues? - Not even once. -
I actually had severe diagnosed GERD for nearly 20 years pre-surgery and took ridiculous amounts of PPI. I also had my heart set on RNY because I was under the impression that VSG wasn't an option. My surgeon gave me the choice, saying that post surgery, once I lost the weight, the GERD would go away. I chose VSG. I'm glad I did. During my surgery I also got a hiatal hernia repair and a fundoplication. Once I lost my weight the GERD was GONE. In total transparency, I've had a small amount of regain and it DID return but I'm working my way back down so meds are also gradually decreasing. The main reason I'm glad I did VSG is because I had absolutely ZERO complications, no healing issues, had no malabsorption and just felt great in general. I did eventually develop lactose intolerance, but I'm told that can happen with either surgery.

Sidebars - can BP help nudge users to fill in their info?
Guest posted a topic in Website Assistance & Suggestions
It seems like more and more new users forget to use the sidebar with surgery info and progress. While it's obviously anyone's choice to keep the information private, it makes it so much easier to help with questions when you have an idea of where people are in their journey. I'm wondering if it's simply because more users are mobile-only? Maybe they don't see the sidebars (I use BP on desktop only)? Maybe they don't even know it's there? It's especially helpful when someone asks about nutrition, complications, phase-specific worries and stalls to understand right off the bat where they are in their journey. There's a world of difference between stalls happening for a BMI52 duodenal switch patient who had surgery 7 weeks ago and lost 10 lbs total and then a sleever who's a year out at BMI24. It's getting harder and harder to tell as fewer and fewer new users use the sidebar. Maybe we the site could help nudge people to fill in the info? -
Post op day 4 complications
Nifer72 replied to gabbykittyvsg's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
So sorry about the complications. You are in the right place though, where they can figure out a plan to get you on the mend! Thinking of you! -
Yeah it sounds like it could be a kidney stone. Been there, done that. As bad as kidney stones are, I guess it's a good thing it's not a complication with your sleeve. I hope you feel better soon!

Anyone gone to Blossom Bariatric (self-pay) in Las Vegas?
wjhollifield replied to kmn1109's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
I had the surgery at Blossom on 5/5/2021! I can’t say enough good things about the docs and the surgery ! I had NO pain .. NO nausea and NO complications . Very professional group of physicians and staff . Very compassionate , very supportive. I would highly recommend this group to anyone . The only regret I have about the surgery ... is not doing it sooner . -
Yesterday I started having some pain but didn't think much of it. 2 am hit and I knew something was wrong. I tried everything I could think of but nothing made it better, walking and changing positions made it worse. So I finally called the on call surgeon and he said to head to the ER. They did labs, EKG since my heart rate was high, and a CT scan with 2 types of contrast. Turns out the site where my small intestine is hooked up to my stomach is swollen shut. There's some other concerning thing that showed up on the scan also that will need to be addressed. So I'm back in the hospital, on the same wing I was in earlier. I have a lovely NG tube from my nose to stomach. This thing sucks!!!! Literally and figuratively. Every time I move it moves too. I can't eat or drink anything. I have the same night nurses I had one night right after surgery. They rock so it's good! The ER nurse was awesome as well. She told me that lately they've been having to ship people out due to lack of beds. Part of the reason for bed shortage is they converted all rooms into single occupancy. The surgeon I saw in the ER was the one who placed the NG tube, he was nice about it but man it was horrible!!! The ER doc and on call surgeon both talked toy surgeon and she agreed with their plan. I'll probably see her Monday. I have no idea how long I'll be here. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app

I had VSG on 2/22/22 and have been in the hospital 9 of those 12 days. Right after surgery I had extreme nausea/vomiting (blood), but it passed and I was able to go home on 2/24/22. Once home I started having horrible reflux and gas cramping and had a hard time getting anything down. On Monday, 2/28/22, my doc told me to go to ED for fluids since I couldn’t keep anything down. I had 5 bags of fluids before I started to pee again. Then the pain came. I could not ingest anything without extreme spasms in my stomach. Doc did a CT and showed what they think is a blood clot in my new pouch. Fast forward, I got a PICC line and TPN on Wednesday this week. Now doc is saying I’m all good to go home even though I still have extreme pain when drinking and haven’t had more than 20 oz of fluid on my own since last week. I’m weary to go home just to have to come back again.

Dr Ortiz practice is scary. I myself experience just today with the practice. They have sake coordinators that aren't medical and review patients medical history and decide what medical surgery is best. In my exable I had few doctors here in the US recommending a certain surgery but a coordinator didn't like hat I ask to speak to the doctor about my health. The coordinator felt threatened and stated I am not qualify. The practice may have a better success by reviewing patients medical records to avoid complications for the patients. Unfortunately you can't sue malpractice.

Hi Lizzie, I’m in a similar situation. I’m getting gastric bypass in April and my bmi is 30-31. This was recommended by my doctor due to my GERD. You can maintain your weight until then by eating healthy, high protein shakes and lifting weights. This will help maintain muscle mass that you will need while you lose the weight. The rude and inappropriate comments by the jerks were unnecessary and clearly were spoken without thinking. You’ve done nothing wrong and don’t let them believe that for a second. Anyone can lose weight as evidenced by a mandatory liquid pre-op diet (to shrink the liver), but not anyone can maintain it without surgery. This surgery aids not only in long-term reduction from obesity, but long-term reduction in the health complications that come from it. It’s also better for your metabolism and lean muscle mass to have a long-term solution. I’ve watched many of my patients die from obesity. Do what is right for you and your family per your doctor’s recommendations.

Sleeve or Bypass? Apprehensive...
Splenda replied to MissNicole's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was in a similar boat where my surgeon told me that either RNY or VSG would be fine and left it up to me. I considered the pros/cons and worried about the effects of RNY. I ultimately went with RNY because I wanted the surgery that gave me the best chance to lose the most weight. If you know you will be self-accountable for your Vitamins, you have already drastically reduced the chances of long-term bad effects. Obviously, there are no guarantees that everything will turn out OK (and that weighed on my mind when I was on the gurney, waiting for my surgery to start). But long-term complications are relatively rare in people who are committed to taking their Vitamins, hitting their Protein goals, etc. And taking the Vitamins isn't difficult -- get a good bariatric multivitamin and find a workable routine for taking it (I keep mine at my desk at work and take it when I get to work). I am very happy with my surgery. I am 41 and am in the best health/shape/weight I have been since college (it has been at least 20 years since my weight was so low). I was also a sweet tooth and addicted to food. But I have to say that not being addicted and not being constantly tempted by sweets is such a liberating feeling. The surgery definitely changes the hormones in your stomach in ways that change how you feel about food. I am 6.5 months out and here is my response to most foods: meh. It's there. It has nutrients. It will taste fine. As someone said in another thread, I no longer feel like my body is fighting against my efforts to lose weight. -
Self pay questions
liveaboard15 replied to RaisnHL's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
LOL Yea cheapest was $15,500, One reason i chose this hospital is because they do offer a type of insurance that covers any complication that may come up during surgery because my insurance will not cover anything involving bariatric surgery or complication. But yea USA hospitals are very expensive compared to the rest of the world and yes most doctors do drive exotic cars. One doctor near where i live use to drive a McLaren. tho a few years ago that doctor was having his car transported by a semi truck and it got stuck on railroad tracks and got hit lol. -
Dang. World-class private hospital here in N Europe, self-pay, nothing covered by public or private insurance - 8,500 for a more complicated procedure than sleeve. Your doctors must be Ferrari'ing around over there.

It’s normal to be scared. Try to focus on how losing excess weight will help your physical difficulties. It certainly sounds like you’ve had more than your share. No one can guarantee that you won’t have any complications, but they are relatively uncommon. I definitely don’t think that you will come out worse. I know it sounds stupid, but try to think positive and hopeful thoughts. You have lots of support on this forum and you can do this! -

Went to the support group, now cold feet?
mrsjo replied to mrsjo's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you both for the replies! I feel like my mind was settled and then my husband started down this journey more with me and he says things like “well that doctor said you can gain it all back anyway so what’s the point” or he says “ these changes you have to make after surgery will make you lose weight anyway, just make the changes without surgery”. I honestly know with PCOS and as many diets as I’ve ever been on I think I need the surgery for true long term success. I am a different person now, already after 8 months in. I exercise regularly and have gained so much endurance and cardiovascular fitness doing CrossFit exercises. I do eat better and don’t see the “quick fast diet” mentality in my life anymore. I’ve made changes that I could’ve never imagined. At the end of the day I do fear the outcomes-what if I’m weak and malnourished or sickly? Or have complications? But then I remember I’ve been in this 8 months with only lost 25lbs AND I’ve never lost more than 40 on my own and never kept it off. My husbands rebuttals say but you’ve never changed your life like this before for this long. I think he keeps dragging me back to the fence lol! -
Any UK surgeon or hospital suggestions or recommendations please?
summerseeker replied to bombshellocks's topic in Weight Loss Surgeons & Hospitals
Hello and welcome to the forum. I think most UK companies are reputable. They get their practices checked regularly. I chose Spire, They are offering Bariatric packages at a price I could afford. If you have complications and need more days in hospital or more x-rays or a CT scan, You are not going to get a bigger bill than you expected. I had to stay 6 days instead of 1. 5 days for nausea and vomiting and 1 day for the storm that outed the power in our county. The doc wouldn't let me go home to a cold house. If he or she has a Mr or Mrs instead of doctor in front of their name then they know their stuff, they are consultants. Good luck. P.s there is a Uk forum in the drop down boxes -
Today is two weeks past surgery. Recovery has gone well with no complications. My surgery was a revision from sleeve to bypass for hernia and GERD issues. I've dropped 10+ lbs in the two weeks which seems right in line (I was only at 227 on date of surgery). Per my surgeon's plan today we could progress to soft solid proteins, so it was great to have an ounce or two of sliced deli meat for lunch. Only downside is that they do an internal stitch to hold things together and that pain is real. I'm told it'll go away 4-6 weeks following surgery but until then it's the only downside to an otherwise good recovery so far.

As one wise anesthesia doc told me, if you're going to have a reaction or complication, the hospital is the best place for it to happen. They keep such close watch on every little thing so they can take action at the first hint of something wrong. During surgery you have anesthesia, the surgeon, the surgeon's assistant, and nurses all dedicated to keeping you safe. Sent from my Z6201V using BariatricPal mobile app -
Help 9 days post op
Arabesque replied to Haloheather's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Definitely get in contact with your medical team or go to your local medical centre asap! Dehydration is a big concern with many complications. You’re only managing a third of what you should be having. I had swelling to begin but it passed after a couple of days but it made swallowing difficult & painful. I did find warm drinks much easier to sip: more soothing on my throat & easier on my tummy. I even heated my protein shake. On day 9 most are still only on fluids - protein shakes, broths, cream soups. Make sure you’re only having a sip at a time & waiting in between. If your shake contains lactose, it may be upsetting your tummy because you may be a little sensitive to dairy post surgery (this is not uncommon & is usually temporary). Look for lactose free shakes. All the best.
