    August surgery buddies!

Congrats!!! You are losing fast! I am the same with my protein coffee. Have to do it that way. And my tastes have also changed big time.

    Anyone for October 2020?

I settled around 135-140. I get obscenely tired if I eat bad food, too much, or too fast - like so tired I literally feel like I will die if I don’t lie down!!! I feel like it is my version of “dumping”. I avoid high fat and sugary foods on work days to keep this from happening at work. When I eat too many carbs over a few days I get very lethargic. If something isn’t going to agree with me I start burping and get the hiccups within about 5 mins. I cannot eat ice cream 😭😭😭 It is the only sweet food so far that I cannot touch without feeling like death! Not even a bite or two. Also, I need to have a drink with electrolytes twice a day. I have noticed a huge difference in my mood and energy level when I don’t have them. I drink 60-90oz a day. I didn’t end up with much loose skin, but my boobs hang super low haha 😂 . I also have “four butt” (like four boob, but on my butt). Any underwear I put on has part of my cheeks inside and then the rest of it hanging below the panty line. Four butt cheeks 🤣. A guy in my support group developed bad dumping syndrome between 2 and 2.5 years out. He said he could only eat 12 grams of sugar in one sitting or else he would dump. You may want to check how much you’re having - you may still be able to eat some sugar if you count it out.

    OFFICIALLY LOST 100LB

Woop! Conrats on being a fast loser!

    Regained it all

Look into Mounjaro. It is a diabetes med that is showing early success with weight loss. It's currently in fast track FDA trial to be approved as a weight loss drug. Patients using it report appetite suppression, decrease in food thoughts and slowed gastric emptying. I think it has the potential to be revolutionary.
  5. +1 i had like 4-5 partial drinks during entire weight loss phase. Now, i am what one would call a regular drinker (some may even, dare i say, call me an alcoholic). I was a drinker before surgery as well. (Though before surgery I would drink lots in a short amount of time, every few weeks, now i drink less at a time, but more often). My increased drinking frequency had a lot to do with Covid lockdowns starting in 2020 though. From a weight-loss perspective, what little i did drink during weight loss phase did not seem to affect ME in getting to goal. Nor does the amounts i drink now seem to affect my ability to maintain my current weight (note though that i simultaneously keep an eye on my total calories - alcohol or otherwise- , so there’s also that) I get tipsy quite fast post-wls (and on small amounts), but I also sober up in record speed. As others said above, if you really want to, try it out and observe how you react, and then decide if want to again. Or, don’t. Up to you…you know yourself best. Sincerely, An alcohol-drinking-DRINKER (from Canada). (i also smoke, drive above the speed limit, and am late paying my taxes this year…)
  6. Doctors are all over the map with their opinions on drinking post WLS, probably similar to their views on drinking to begin with if I had to guess. My team said it was okay at three months for a special occasion. I have to say it’s not the same as it was pre WLS. I may be one of the few willing to admit but when I drink I do it to get a buzz, lol. Post WLS the buzz comes and goes in like ten minutes for me. I can’t drink fast enough to maintain it and probably would kill myself trying. It’s almost not worth it to me. Waste of calories. That being said my real advice is if you do decide you want to do it try it at home first. Your body may react welrd and the last thing you want is to feel sick or get sloppy drunk on your birthday off one drink. And make sure there is a designated driver around. I still worry about how long it stays in our system and all that being different than before.

    Carbs yes or no

doing low carb of 50 total carbs now for pre op diet and it’s hard!! (If i could minus fiber it wouldn’t be so bad) and it has caused some intermittent issues due to reduced fiber intake (consuming some supplements now that i don’t count towards my 50 total, but would much rather use dietary fiber in foods) i went through the “keto flu” back in August (foggy head, achy feeling , low energy) in about three days. I also was ravenously hungry early on. my brother suggested that I increase my fat intake and that did the trick. I made cream cheese and peanut butter “fat bombs” with sugar free chocolate chips and monkfruit… scooped them with a 3/4 ounce scoop and ate two of them a day as snacks and it made the hunger disappear! i do not think i could do this low long term, personally, but will be integrating the low carb approach into my post op dietary lifestyle. Being very selective with any sugars, flours and starches is fine.. but it’s hard for me without being able to have much beans/legumes/peas/etc. I would kill for a big bowl of refried beans for dinner, but the total carbs are just too high pre op unless I am super cautious all day.

    Food confusion

I found the standards I was given were quite strict and still reasonable. These are used Provence wide here and I found little deviation to different plans offered by other hospitals here in Ontario. My hospital is involved with The University of Toronto medical school as several hospitals are all involved together. A large group or team gives me confidence in their work and structure they offered me. I was also given the option to vary my plan slightly but I personally recommend being a bit more strict with yourself and allow your body to transition and heal. Time and your body mechanics will tell you when to progress. It is a long journey we are all in. I spent 30 years being fat and unhealthy and I will not loose the weight in fast succession. It will take lots of effort and time to make real permanent changes. I wish you all the best on your weight loss journey to better health. From Canada Cheers!

    Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?

I've started trying to get accustomed to just drinking some sort of spirit or liqueur on the rocks...I was a gin and tonic gal before and while I know many of you are able to handle bubbles eventually, I'm a year out and they still give me the ick, so no more. I find that I don't tend to drink the stronger stuff as fast and it tends to get watered down by the ice. LOTS OF ICE.

    Spatial awareness

I have something sort of similar going on, but maybe a little different? I can't walk a straight line to save my life! If I ever get pulled over and am asked to do a drunk test, I'd fail miserably, even though I'm stone cold sober. I'm thinking it has something to do with my center of gravity changing and my body not being able to adjust fast enough? Maybe that, combined with just being a bit light headed all the time from a drop in blood pressure? Whatever it is, I'd like to get over it soon!

    Carbs yes or no

This right here! I am the same, I can lose significant weight doing low carb, but I can't live the rest of my life like that. Or should I say, I don't want to live the rest of my life like that. I have taken the same approach of "smart-carbs" and limiting simple and highly processed carbs. I want my body to learn that no food is off limits and respond with huge weight gains. Overall trying about to be smarter about food choices, focusing on protein first. I'm learning that carbs aren't the enemy. But high carbs + high fat can go wrong fast.
  12. So what did your Drs advise you do as far as carbs? Mine says that they don't really limit carbs and that they believe that carbs will give you energy and then you will be more active which will then lead to weight loss. They believe that balance is the key. Looking though through threads and youtube, most of the people seem to be on a low carb diet like keto without the added fat. I do want to be successful but if I could be successful and still eat more carbs I think I would be happier. Carbs are the only thing I am craving but I'm only a month out from surgery and carbs to me seem to be a slippery slope and I'm afraid that if I allow myself to eat carbs then I'll start eating them too much and snacking on crackers or something. Since surgery I have limited myself to 40 or less carbs per day and yesterday I had my one month visit with the dietitian and he said I needed to up my carbs to around 30 per meal. So what did your plan say about carbs and if you were allowed carbs, did you lose weight fast or was is slower? The speed of weight loss I know is individual, but if it seems to be a factor I want to know.

    Help getting back on track

My therapist (who I got to help combat my food issues) said cravings usually last 30 mins or less. Try to keep that in mind when you are craving something. I think you are like me. I am going to have to be very careful around certain foods (carb heavy hitters like bread and pasta for me). If I start, I won't stop. Kind of like an alcoholic in recovery. Some people can have a little bit and not suffer from "withdrawals", but if I were to have a little bit then my cravings spike and can spin out of control fast. My recommendations: 1. Track what you are eating in an app if possible cause sometimes that will help reign it in 2. Wait 30 mins when craving something and drink water. Go for a walk or pick an activity to distract you. After 30 mins, see how you are feeling and what your body may really be after (protein/more water/?) 3. Try to find healthy substitutes for what you are wanting. Pizza? Find a low carb recipe that tastes good and fills that urge. Sweets? Are some sugar free options or low carb options a possibility? 4. Journal and track when these cravings are happening. What's going on when they do? Are you stressed/bored/angry? Are you around others who are eating things you want? Are you out of the house and having to do fast food as quick options? Etc. See where your weak points are and then start identifying ways to help deal with them. 5. Get a supportive therapist to help you deal with your mindset around food. You can outeat wls. For many of us, this is going to be a lifelong addiction that we can defeat but will always have to be mindful of.

Scared to go through with surgery

Thank you so much. I was so scared I was crying. It's been a couple days and I'm down 8 more pounds, putting me at 190lbs. I'm dropping so fast it doesn't seem to feel real. My body temp is finally up from 92F to 96F which I think is contributing a lot to things, and I don't always feel cold now. As everyone has said, I think you all are right. I'll change my PCP and find someone else. I really feel like he may be fat phobic and I'm not sure if the surgery will be good for me since my daily calorie intake is around 1200kcal normally. He said if I got the vsg I could get my calories down to 500kcal, and things just sounded off to me. I guess in my heart I felt like I had no hope and I couldn't get my PCP to take my concerns seriously because he would always say I needed to lose weight before I was allowed to discuss hormone problems with him, which turned out to be the case. I really appreciate everyone who replied. I'll update the thread with my progress. However, at this rate I may not qualify for a vsg. At least when I reached out to my nutritionist, she said I probably wouldn't qualify by the time my hormones equilibrate. Thank you so much everyone. 15. Thanks so much for the transparency and openness of everyone sharing their struggles! I have been researching (nurse brain here, lol) bariatric procedures for over 4yrs before finally being brave enough to seek out help. I’m almost 40 and have struggled with my weight my entire life. Have lost and gained back over 60lbs three times, but never in a truly healthy way. When all my scrubs were skin tight, and I was over the weekend gut limit for a bicycle, I realized I had enough - time wanted my entire life to change! I used to love bicycling, hiking, and strength training, but have gotten so out of breath all the time which made me depressed, and then I had to have a hysterectomy and everything really changed after that! so fast forward to now, I’ve lost about 10-15lbs since March/April and am scheduled for my sleeve provider in just three days!! good luck to everyone

    October 2022 surgery support

Arrived in Turkey and was picked up by my interpreter. Was allowed PIZZA before beginning my 24 hour food and water fast. Had my chest x-ray, blood taken for tests and my first blood thinner shot. EKG in the morning and if all is well, surgery is around 11 am. This is really happening!! I got to visit with another patient when I arrived who was going home tomorrow to the UK. Feeling very confident now, will be so hard to sleep.
  17. So happy to hear from you Letty! Tomorrow starts my second trimester. Everything is going good so far. My weight has stabilized but I’m not gaining. My nutritionist had advised me that I need to increase my calories by like 700/day. Even with the increase in calories and Protein (averaging 80g/day) I’m keeping level. Did you have sleeve or bypass? I had bypass and I’m really really hoping that heartburn doesn’t return - ever! Hopefully the next 8 weeks go by fast for you! Sounds like you’re going to have a Christmas baby!! Yay!!

    Liquid Diet PO

Can add collagen with no problem but just don't count it in your total protein goal since it is not a complete protein. Another thing, don't buy too much because the liquid stage will go by fast and you will be stuck with tons of extra you "won't want to look at for a very long time" type of stuff lol. I still have tons of protein powders, bariatric soups, shakes that are sitting in a box.

    November Surgery Buddies!!!

Surgery date Nov 22nd. I'm self-paid so everything is moving fast, just need to do a couple of mandatory classes and in 2 weeks get the surgery clearances. Can't deny I was thinking about Thanksgiving, but I will either be on preop or post op, and I would rather get it done that week that I may not be as busy with work.

    Stall on loss

This. I fit this pattern to a T. I am 14 months out. I'm working out hard, tracking calories, and have dropped into the 4-5 bs a month range. The fast loss is only at the very beginning for most people, and will slow down. You will have stalls and it will be frustrating unless you are someone very lucky. This is a long game, not a quick fix by any means.

    No cooking!!!

Hubby and I eat out a lot. I usually make something on Sunday that will last 2-3 days and we'll alternate that with take out. Of course, I eat much differently than I used to. In the liquid stages, Panera was my best friend. Their tomato soup is wonderful. I can still go to every single fast food place we used to, I just opt for better foods in much smaller portions. The other night we got Outback and I had about a 1/3 of a steak along with two small bites of mashed potatoes. Chick-fil-a grilled filets or nuggets are a favorite! I watch my sodium intake otherwise and track everything closely to make sure I'm not going over my fat limits, but I just don't eat a bun or bread with anything and choose high protein options.

    Food Before and After Photos

It’s where a “skinny” person eats foods that aren’t nutrient dense and considered unhealthy for most of their diet. Things like fast food, chips/crisps, fries/chips, fried foods, loads of fat and sugar, etc.

    Low folate, iron deficient anemia…

I got my Lap Band almost ten years ago, and I can't remember if they did pre op blood work and if they did what the results were. I'm almost three months post op revision Bypass now and this surgeon did do pre op blood work, but it was all normal. I've been on continual vitamins/calcium for nearly ten years, so that's probably part of the reason my labs were normal. It's not uncommon for obese people to be malnourished/have low vitamins & mineral levels. If you think about it, for most obese people, the choices that they make/made is part of the reason that gets a lot of us to wls. Fast food, pizza, burgers for the most part has very little nourishment as far as vitamins/minerals go (besides carbs, lol). I'm sure your team will get your levels up to normal before you have your surgery. As a matter of fact, after my pre op labs came back, even tho they were normal, I was started on chewable bariatric vitamins. It was standard protocol for pre op patients. So don't fret, you'll be fine! Best wishes!

    what surprised you?

I developed a wheat allergy. What they don't tell you is that if you have a surgery with a malabsorption element then you have a 3% change of developing a wheat allergy or Celiac's Disease. I found out the hard way, but honestly? It's been a blessing in disguise. It keeps me on track. I can't eat fast food which I loved before surgery and eating out is next to impossible because it has to be a place that caters to people with food allergies and where I live we have like 1 gluten free place.

    August surgery buddies!

Oh my goodness! I miss reading this forum so much! I've been trying to really focus on myself to heal. A week after surgery around September 6th, I had this horrrrrrrible pain out of no where at 10AM. It was the front and back of my right side. My boyfriend rushed me to the ER, and it was packed!!! I was screaming in pain and throwing up absolutely nothing. All the rooms were occupied and I was #3 to be triaged. I begged my fiance to lay down on the floor in the waiting room of the ER. As soon as I laid down they brought me to a different room to treat me, Well guys I had a kidney stone! It was THE WORSE PAIN in my entire life. I had my eyes close from the pain the whole time. TMI - Please be aware!!! Ever since surgery I was only constipated one day. Ever since then I've been having very very oily orange stool. Straight up like grease. When I had my sleeve in 2018 I was constipated every month. I can't even pass gas normally because it will leak out. My nurse and dietitian said I am not storing my fat nutrients. I'm excreting it way too fast which is not normal, I have to go in and possibly be prescribed a fat enzyme. Every time I eat I have to go super bad within 30 minutes. If i don't get it resolved i can develop IBS. I am soooo scared at this point, Also is anyone prescribed Ursodiol to prevent gallstone problems?
