    Heart rate recovery question

Hi all! I am 11 weeks post op. I have a question about how my heart feels after an overly strenuous activity. When I do cardio for 30 minutes at the gym I am fine and my heart seems to return to resting rate after about 20 minutes. However, on a couple occasions I have attempted to hike with my husband, I am sure I am over-doing it. We hiked Monday (4 days ago), a 4.2 while hike with an elevation gain of 1100 ft, first 2 miles up, then last 2 miles down. it was in high-desert so the top elevation was 6800 ft. Did it in about 2 hrs. I was exhausted. My heart rate took a few hours to return to resting. However, for the next 3 days, my heart pounded hard with any sort of action...getting dressed, getting out of the car, short walking, raising out of bed. I thought perhaps it was dehydration? So I drank more Water that usual and now 4 days after the hike I finally feel normal, no more hard pounding heart. I used to experience this occasionally pre-surgery, when I was 50 lbs heavier. I had a full cardio work up and they found nothing wrong with my heart, thank goodness. Now being lighter I didn't expect to feel it. Could it be that I just am not in cardio shape enough to exert myself to this extent? I know I over did it. I worry about my heart/cardio because my brother had a heart attack at age 45. Just wondering if anyone has felt this pounding heart sensation days after hard exercise?

I've been on and off prednisone and with my meds it's so hard to lose weight (my lupus meds) so I'm praying they don't consider my yo yo weight an issue bc I hopefully file this week. I follow the diet 98% of the time and try to get my steps in and I've quit smoking!

    Revision

Hi! I just had a revision and hernia repair on the 2nd. The scale is showing I gained 6 pounds from the morning of surgery. How long does it take for all the fluid to get out of you?
  5. I had my band out on 10/27. I had some strong gas pains and tenderness the first 5-7 days, but really saw them disappear by the end of week 2. My doctor had told me no more restrictions from a day to day activity after week 2, including no weight restrictions but to take it slow. At about 2 1/2 weeks post op, I had a fairly active day, running errands, walking, etc. I did scrub a couple floors and did lift a box that probably weighed close to 40 lbs. That night I noticed when sleeping if I attempted to roll to my side, it instantly felt like I was ripping/pulling something in my stomach. When I got up the next morning, any movement had the pain sharp pull/ripping feeling in the middle of abdomen, very close to my largest incision (believe this is where the port was). I gave it a couple days and when it didn't improve I called my surgeon. They indicated it is probably just scar tissue or maybe I pulled something and to take it easy. To call them back if the pain didn't decrease over the next 2-3 weeks or if it became acute, or if I developed a fever. It has now been an entire week and the pain has not decreased. I called again yesterday and they still are not concerned. Told me to give it another 2 weeks and take it slow. I haven't been doing anything beyond day to day and walking my dog. Gave me the same guidelines to call them if the pain became acute or if I developed a fever. I haven't developed the fever and frankly, struggle with defining "acute". I tend to have a very high pain tolerance and threshold. What concerns me most is that until a week ago, all pain/discomfort had disappeared, and then suddenly a week ago, abdomen pain when I move, which isn't improving. And now the last 2 days, heartburn is back. Thoughts? Any one experience anything similar?

    Surgury date is set...

Congrats! I go in on the 20th. Good Luck. Hope to follow your progress and celebrate your weight loss victories.
  7. I know what you mean, I hope goes will for you as well. At least you have a record of your weight, I haven't been to my primary care for quite some time (I forgot to mention that earlier). I hope I get approved for this. I am on pins and needles and the process hasn't yet to start yet. I have to stay positive.
  8. @@sbg224 I am so excited for you! I did it not too long ago. I remember seeing those numbers and being so very thrilled! I am very happy for you. I have had an ACL reconstruction and a partial knee replacement. Both times in rehab the therapist had me on the stationary bike to work on range of motion. Do you do that? I know both times I actually lost weight and I think it was the bike that did it. How is your knee by the way? Seems you are still having some pain. My aunt had one a few months ago and on day four, she answered her door with no crutches. She hadn't been on them except for one or two days, if that. Shocked me? I was on them a while if I remember correctly. Rehab has really advanced. Were you on crutches? Good luck with everything!!!
  9. Saw my Dr. yesterday and got the results from a blood draw last week. My A-1C(blood sugar average for 3 months) was down to 6.9. It had been 7.7 last year, 7.2 early this year, and 7.1, 4 months ago. That doesn't sound remarkable, except all of the 7 numbers was when I was taking 120 units of insulin and 2000 mg. of Metformin a day. The 6.9 has been since I have been taking 10 units or less a day and no Metformin at all....1/12 the dose. My good cholesterol was up (40) and my bad cholesterol was down (62) and my dosage of the statin drug has dropped to 1/2 the regular dose every other day (so 1/4th of what I was taking). I didn't have any idea what my results would be........but I am sure one happy camper. The VSG did what I wanted it to. I also had been plateauing between 190-192 and yesterday that was broken as well as I hit 189. Which makes my weight loss at 47 pounds on the sleeve and 98 total. I am re-enthused!!!:P:P:P:P:P:P:P
  10. You are doing great. It sounds very much like my recovery 10 months and 7 lbs from my goal weight. Keep it up! It works if you work it!

  12. The good news is there is no contract, where you have to sign on a dotted line! It can be amorphous and is easily refined! It's truly an evolution and extension of reality as you live that portion (or live the "new"). As a MO person most of my life, I had absolutely very little concept about how it felt to be "normal" or even skinny. I just knew this would be the "easiest" it would ever get to either approach that goal or capture the flag. I honestly still don't! I'm reasonably sure I will make 1st Goal. And anything beyond that, is up for negotiation, but NOT open to rationalization. I'm in "take no prisoners" goal mode. I set my first goal 150 based on my RD and doc. Their goals for me were 156 (60% of EBW if I remember correctly), or my doc was 160lbs cuz she said, it felt like a good weight for me. I on the other hand wanted to be my high school weight where I was the closest to being "normal" that I ever was in life. The 2nd goal for me is to be in "normal weight category" which is anything under 145lbs. I "think" I can reach it with continued focus and discipline. Beyond that, I enter into @Matt Z "almost absurd" mode (135lbs). Then finally "Barbie Dream Girl" mode (125lbs). LOL. Extremely unlikely. Through it all, beyond weight, I want to be fully healthy! I would like to be off all, or almost all my meds. I want to be able to exercise at will and be active and never have to worry about if I'm "too fat for xyz."
  13. I agree 100%. Another thing that will be nice is not having the doctor blame every ailment on my weight.

    Lifting and calorie intake

Here is my 2 cents worth: I work out 6 days a week, 3 days 1 hr. cardio (HIIT and Medium mixed), and 3 days weights with 30 min moderate cardio. I eat about 1900 cals a day and it breaks out to about 30% carbs, 50% carbs and 20% fats. I found that this is a 40% deficit in cals, based on my activity levels, and have been at same scale weight for 30+ days. I have seen lower fat levels and slow muscle growth, so I am not too concerned. I have 15 lbs. of fat left to lose, and plan on cycling my calories/carbs soon and I feel my scale stall is partially associated to some metabolism slowing. (Been in big calorie deficit for 9 months now) My revision seems to be much looser and allows me to eat much more than many with RNY do, so getting this much food in is only a little challenging with 5 meals a day. I mostly focus on getting in proper protein, and making carbs fibrous, except right after training, so I am not too concerned with the totals values. My fats come from clean sources only, mostly coconut, flax and olive oils, and lean meats, and I feel high fat levels of the right fats is OK, if we can handle it. It has taken me a while to get to this point and a lot of trial and error to get the right fit, and I am sure you will need to do the same. I suggest tracking your diet and any changes and measure the affect every week or so and adjust again as needed. No trainer know you like you. Best on your journey. . .
  15. Wow!!! Perfect response!!! AMEN!!!! And I will add, that I would never feel like I wasn't doing myself good by going outside and enjoying a good walk. Walking will lose weight, but WLS ensures that the weight will stay off.

Hi Carmen, I hope that I can provide some inspiration. I am 13 months post op - my new life (RNY) began on June 25, 2013. When I began my journey in January, 2013, I weight 331 pounds - I am only 5'2". I am 49 years old and was not able to work out. I had high blood pressure and used a C-Pap for sleep apnea. I was moving toward diabetes, but was not there yet. My joints, however, were horrible. I could not walk for more than a few minutes at a time due to knee pain. I saw a chiropractor weekly to manage my knee and back pain. Today I am at my goal weight - 127 pounds - that's 205 pounds lost!. I have a NORMAL BMI. I have never in my life woke up in the morning without the thought of how am I going to lose weight today. It is so very strange to be on maintenance! My RNY has been a nothing short of a miracle. I have tons of energy. I belong to the YMCA where I do Zumba, TurboKick, and BodyPump classes. I use the treadmill and elliptical trainer. I have absolutely no joint pain at all. My family traveled to the Black Hills of South Dakota over the Independence Day Holiday and we climbed to the top of Harney's Peak - the highest elevation East of the Rocky Mountains. I AM LIVING MY LIFE!! I am no longer watching from the sidelines as my family has fun - I am right there with them. It has taken hard work, dedication, and determination. I won't say that it was easy - and I still struggle with my relationship with food. But living life in this body is SO much better that I am determined to NEVER go back to the prison my obese body was before. If I can do this, anybody can!! Reach out for support here. There are terrific people here that helped me when I needed it. We are here for you!! Carol

    12lbs in 5days

First stall for me was at 3 weeks...it was depressing! I think I'm into stall #2 since I'm at the same weight for almost 3 weeks now (but I'm at 3 months post op)...had a good run, and hopefully this too will pass.

    12lbs in 5days

I don't weight myself regularly (last weight-in was a month ago at drs follow up) so not sure if I hit a stall or not, but noticed that clothes were fitting better and I was constantly updating my wardrobe, plus everyday I feel so much better about health and well being and have gained so much self confidence.

    Final question

I'm getting some loose skin that I didn't have before weight loss. Also I don't really consider it a problem but my stomach does tend to rumble and grumble a lot when I am eating and for about an hour after. It's getting quieter and quieter as time passes sinces surgery though. And it's just making some noise, not causing me any pain or even discomfort. These are the only things that come close to problems. Physically I feel terrific and everything is in good working order

    Postop - May 9th Sleevers

Awesome. I'm May 31. I'm finally able to tolerate chicken without pain. So happy. Very close to my protein goal. I had a protein shake for breakfast and 4 oz chicken salad for lunch. I should be there after dinner. I have my 6 wk post op appt this Thursday so I'll get any official weight. I also went for a nice walk earlier today and over all I'm feeling pretty good. For as much regret as I initially had, I am glad I made this choice. I'm already down one clothing size and even though it's not alot, it's really helped me to feel better about the way I look. I'm glad you're doing good. My teen daughter started weight watchers to track her points and had been walking with me also, so I think this change will benefit the whole family.

    Nervous BUT Excited

Congratulations on the best decision you'll ever make. I had my surgery 3 years ago in March and have lost 80 lbs. My beginning weight was 265. I feel great, I exercise and "it is" the best decision I've ever made. Good Luck. You're going to do great!
  22. I contacted my insurance company to find out what their requirements were. I then saw my primary care doctor who asked for a referral to my chosen surgeon. The medical group turned me down, as I had not done a 6 month supervised program. I appealed. This was the only time I provided my own documents. I supplied weight watchers records and journals from years past showing prior attempts at weight loss. I won the appeal. After that my surgeon and primary care doctor coordinated all tests and made the applications to my insurance. The only other thing I had to do was the psych eval. I went to a doctor recommended by my primary care doctor, but I had to make the appointment, get the letter, and take it to my surgeon's office. That was it. It took several months, but was relatively painless. Best wishes in the journey. Denise
  23. Hi Everyone, I am super excited to start this new journey to become healthy . I was skinny as a teenager and in my twenties. But after several back and neck surgeries, i started putting on weight. I have two adult children and my husband who are very supportive. My EGD is tomorrow 9/25 and surgery (Gastric Sleeve) is scheduled for Oct 2. My surgeon is Dr. St. Laurent in Cypress Texas. If anyone has any helpful hints that they would share with me, I would greatly appreciate it.

    HAPPY DANCE! 199 lbs!

Huge Congrats!!! My dream is to be at 199 - it's my goal weight, although I want to try for more once I get there. I just can't wait.
  25. Just FYI'ing ... went to my initial information session. Seemed like a lot depended on insurance, but they tried to lift up the ones that had insurance that required the 6 month diet plan. They said, start tomorrow, start scheduling all your necessary appointments, which aren't going to be *tomorrow*, and then by the time you are done with them, the surgery will really only be realistically weeks away. On the other hand, they said, if you are a 45 year old female, 100lbs overweight, high blood pressure, some type 2 diabetes stuff coming on, but otherwise in good shape with no other majore stuff going on, good stress tests, etc. ... they said could be 8 weeks from first session. They did also mention that if you are a man who is 300+ overweight with lots of other stuff going on, you could be 12 months from surgery and a required 100 lb weight loss pre-surgery. I am soooo calling tomorrow.
