Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
Truckerchic replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I was going to go with the sleeve but got RNY ....first longer history with the rny, sleeve is still considered a newer procedure as far as long term results... revisions, in my year of classes and research I have talked to a lot of people who got the band or sleeve and still ended up getting RNY including the friend that told me about the sleeve. I only wanted to have it done once... I am a food addict and wanted the most restrictions and limitations on my eating as possible, I have sleeved friends on my fitness pal that eat junk, yes it's their choice not to change their food habits but I didn't want that option of being able to eat a lot of greasy, sugary foods and although many of them have lost great they are very strict on themselves as not to backslide...I am 5 months out and I haven't dumped, I have had no issues with any foods, my blood work is good. I am down 78 lbs and feel great... if you have no medical issues that require one over the other the choice is up to you. Recommended reading The Big Book of Gastric Bypass and there is also one for the Sleeve and Band very detailed pre op, the surgery itself and first few months post... good luck!! -
Sleeve to Mini Bypass, The Good & Bad?
Hello2018 posted a topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I’m considering a sleeve revision and heard good results from a mini bypass (mgb) rather than full RNY. I’m targeting an end of Mar 2018 revision date. Help please!! I’m at 205lb, 6yrs post vertical sleeve. 1) does is help with reflux? 2) what your weight loss total so far? 3) side effects? 4) positives? -
Breaking up with my band and mourning the loss
elcee replied to SkinnyKathy's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I could be you , I had a band in 2009 lost all my excess weight, kept it off for ages and then it stopped working. I had a band to bypass revision in Jan and haven’t looked back. All my excess weight has come off - I now sit around 49kg and my diet is so much healthier. I can eat steak and chops and salads and there are no stuck episodes. I no longer waste nights out in restaurant loos because my first bite of food got stuck. To me my RNY does what the band was marketed to do. I know when i’ve had enough, I don’t get stuck, full is in my stomach not my throat and I can eat small amounts of healthy food and be satisfied. Sugar causes me issues if I’m not careful but that is a good thing. Good luck with whatever you decide to do but when deciding don’t write off the RNY, it is so much better than the band. -
How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to PhenomenalWoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My first go round (dec 2019) I went from 279 to 264 (15lbs). When I had my revision for gerd (aug 2020) I went from 220 to 212 (8lbs). Both were 2 weeks long. Edited to add- my plan was 3-4 protein shakes a day, all the celery and cucumbers I wanted and 1-2 cups of broth. -
How Much Weight Loss During Liquid Diet
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to PhenomenalWoman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I did go from sleeve to RNY. It did eliminate the gerd but I still take the protonix once a day when I wake up until I talk to the surgeon at my next appointment in July. I’m 9 months out from my revision to RNY have lost about 60lbs and I’ve been maintaining at 150-155 for almost 4 months now. -
The peso has also gone way down, that's why the pieces have dropped in dollars. I just went to Dr. Aceves for a fill on Saturday and the cost for the flouro was only $60 instead of $75 because of the exchange rate. As for why I chose the band over the sleeve, I was not interested in cutting off a perfectly good part of my body. I realize it takes longer to lose the weight and you have to work at it, and it requires follow up but I was OK with all of those things. With the band everyone has their individual "sweet spot" yet with the sleeve it's an irreversable one size fits all. That just seems odd to me. The potential for revision from band to sleeve is there but not the other way around. I'm just a chicken, what can I say! LOL. With that being said, Dr. Aceves is the best choice for either (and yes I'm biased ) I believe he is doing more sleeves then bands now because of the demand. The day of my surgery I was the only band and there were 2 others getting sleeved.

Gastric Bypass or Sleeve? Need feedback, please!
volkitteh replied to kpay10's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I went with the gastric bypass due to my diabetes. And it so far has worked to that affect. I am 3 weeks post op and have not had a single shot of insulin since 2 days post op. I had originally asked about band to sleeve revision but if you're diabetic, bypass is the way to go. If not it's probably a personal choice but any of these are just tools and we have to stick with them or they're all able to be defeated if the wrong habits return. -
Revision Surgery Scheduled
elcee replied to Mark.olypenn's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I was revised on 1 surgery. Life with an RNY is so much easier than with a band. I don’t get stuck and I can eatlots of good healthy foods. I just have to be really careful with sugar but that is a good thing -
Anyone exerienced soreness almost 3 months after surgery?
Rev Me Up! replied to poohmsg's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
No, I don't have that experience. I am a lap band revision and my old port site is a little tender if I push on it, but I heard that is normal. You should call your doctor just in case and make sure there is no damage. -
Not 1 person has told me it looks like I've lost weight! I'm sad :(
marfar7 replied to marfar7's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got the surgery at 174 lbs cuz my lapband slipped (started at 248 lbs almost 4 yrs ago) and I knew I'd gain every lb back that I had lost without anything. I probly wouldn't have gotten wls for 44 lbs. There's quite a few of us here that revised to sleeve from band at a lower bmi (mine was 28) but we still needed it. -
I had a band. Wish I never had. They are only temporary, have to be replaced in 10 years. Mine caused permanent stomach and liver damage. Ended up having to revise to RNY. Good luck.

Band vs Bypass aka What do you say when ppl....
Band_Groupie replied to hrtgoeson's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
This was my list vs. RNY. My reasons for the LB: - Safer surgery (no cutting other than the Laproscopic incisions, and fat tissue around where the band will go) - Unfill at any point needed and Reversible if needed for other health reasons - Less complications (dumping, hair loss, etc.) - Slower weight loss (easy to explain when you're not 'telling' everyone. I’m a lower BMI without severe comorbidities, so I don’t need to get healthy FAST). - Easy to get proper nutrition- I don't EVER have to drink a protein shake. - Continued interaction/accountability to the surgeon (ie. I had to sign that I would continue seeing my surgeon for 5 yrs. post-op, he covers 6 fills as part of the package so it's not for more $, he really wants you to be successful long-term) - Continued adjustments to stoma for life (RNY/some others- can stretch the stoma, some need revision surgery to retighten this.) - I'm more interested in a slow significant weight loss and keeping it off than a huge weight loss...in other words, if I don't lose all 100 pounds as long as I get to healthy and stay there that's OK with me. It's the keeping it off I'm most interested in. - I need portion control, not reactions to bad foods. I already know I can diet pretty successfully (I'm a professional dieter, just can't keep it off and I feel like I'm starving) so I'm not worried about counting calories etc. (I don't think I need the malabsorption). -
i was banded at 47 and then on my 49th birthday i was revised to a sleeve...best decision i ever made was to have wls....ive lost a total of 105 lbs

Survey: Adherence to Vitamins & Minerals Supplementation
CherryZheng replied to CherryZheng's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi Hilary, Thanks for your feedback! You made a very good point! However, the third part of the survey is taken from the SF-12® Health Survey, which has been validated, meaning that the researcher has come to the opinion that the survey is measuring what it was designed to measure. I cannot revise those 12 questions because it may jeopardize the validity of the third part of the survey. But as you suggested, it is a great idea to add a comment section at the very end of the survey, so that participants can put down their thoughts, concerns, and issues about the survey and the research topic -- more valuable information! Also, you reminded me that I should mention in the introduction section that the survey will be open until November 2014. So, such as your situation, you would have known that you could take it later when you feel the time is more appropriate Thank you again for taking time to participate and comment. Cherry -
Surgery in Feb, Weightloss at a standstill?!
Doer replied to Heidi Isales's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Seven weeks today - 21 pounds. Ugh, revision, the slow race! -
This whole situation is very disturbing. It could be that your wife is having major complications from the band. Perhaps her body is rejecting the material placed in her body. Inflammation is usually the body's response to a foreign object. I would hesitate to replace the band with another one without knowing why this happening to her right now. The situation is serious, and I would be asking as many questions of the surgeon and the rest of her medical team to find out WHY this is happening. It is not just from the trauma of the surgery. Yes the vomiting could cause her to have swelling, but to the point of almost having the stoma close is very extreme. Weight loss is not worth your life! Living the way she is now on IV and vomiting all the time is no quality of life. Reach out to other doctors, not just bariatric surgeons, maybe speak to an internist or a gastroenterologist as well to see what their opinion is on the swelling before making the choice to put in another band or revise to another surgery. Best of luck to you and your wife. Please keep us updated.

Hi. I will be going to Mexico on Oct 19th, with Dr. Aceves. Surgery will be on the 20th. I was banded in 2006. I will be having a revision surgery from band to sleeve. I will be getting a complete unfill this morning and going on liquids for 3 weeks preop. That's a little scary . My weight is 125 (up from lowest of 115). I hope to lose the 10 lbs and then maintain. I hope the sleeve will help with that.

Low Profile/Port Revision Questions
willowcrown posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Hello! I have reached my weight loss goal and will be having surgery next month to remove excess skin, tummy tuck and breast implants. At the same time, I have asked my Lap Band surgeon to do a port revision because the one I have now is a bit bothersome in some clothing (ie - tights, nylons, some tighter waistband pants/skirts). He's agreed but I'm wondering about any insurance coverage issues. The pain is really not a concern, since I'm going to be pretty miserable from everything else - what's a little bit more? lol Anyway, has anyone had experience with BC/BS PPO with regard to coverage on the low profile port placement? Thanks! -
I recently got out of an outpatient surgery by Dr. Duckett from Northwest Ohio Surgery Specialists to repair my lapband. I was originally banded on September 2006. Over time; I lost quite a bit of weight- but during the last year; I noticed a sudden to gradual loss of restriction in my band. I found Dr. Duckett of Maumee and made an appointment with him after noticing some weight gain. I told him that I felt that I had gradually lost the restriction in the device. He checked the device and discovered that I was correct under the scope. The band had leaked at the port location and throughout. I have two incisions currently. The first is where my port is located under the left breast- the second is through my belly button. After having the tool for six years; I am glad to get a fresh start and start the journey for a second time. I plan on using this to my convenience to lose weight before my first pregnancy and to lose the weight after I deliver

I was a revision from the lap-band, so the questions I had would probably be different from yours. Dr. Barker was very good with explaining exactly what the surgery was once I started telling him I didn't like the band (gave it a good 3.5 yrs). I know Dr. Kim and Dr. Davidson have great reviews from others on this site for other DFW area docs. One doc I can tell you to steer clear of though is Dr. Glenn Ihde. New to WLS and very dishonest. You'll want to know how long the doc thinks your post-op recovery will take, how often you should get labs taken to check that you're getting all the nutrients you need, if they have a support group (if you think you'd need it - Dr. Barker has one I know), what their schedule is regarding your post-op diet (how long on Clear Liquids, mushies, etc.), what his complication rate is, how many sleeves has he done, stuff like that. Good luck on finding the right doc for you!

Am I The Only One That Wasnt On A Pre-Op Diet?
Tiffykins replied to jiggyjen1982@yahoo.com's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I only had to do low carb/high Protein for both my band and my revision. There's no scientific evidence to prove that the "liquids" only diet does anything more than low carb for a pre-op diet. Nor, did I have do the 6 month wait, or lose any specified amount of weight before either surgery. -
Band to Sleeve...how will this be different?
piercedqt78 replied to lapbandlex's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am a band to sleeve revision and to me that does seem extreme. You will feel hungry, not starving like before, but hunger still happens. You don't want to restrict yourself to shakes (they get old trust me) and then binge on the wrong foods. I would make a plan for lean Proteins, and some veggies. Protein shakes are not going to provide you with complete nutrition, and it worries me that a NUT would be ok with that plan. I would run it past your surgeon and see what they have to say. -
How Many Times Did You Make Yourself Sick....
Threetimesacharm replied to Curvy Girl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My best advice is to put down your fork wherever you are home, work or out with friends. When you are chewing focus on that, do not talk, just do your chewing, put down your fork. Wait then to speak when you have swallowed that small fork of food. It takes some work but you will get very used to it. I have been doing this with my band for years, revising to sleeve on the 10th, and you get so used to it you don't even realize that you are doing it!! -
Today is my 1 year Surgiversary!!!
Healthy_life2 replied to Myhorseisfattoo's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I apologize to the original poster – I’m off topic. @AchieveGoals So, I just checked out ALL your activity on the site. Your comment on this post stuck me as odd. You said " until GERD kicks in" You posted ” So a little bit about me, I was lap banded when I was 17 years old, got it taken out when I was 22 because of pouch enlargement. Now I am thinking of getting sleeve done. But the GERD part scares me, it's like exchanging disease states for one to the other. It helps get rid of Diabetes, but you acquire GERD, so severe to the point that people need revisions to another sleeve or another bariatric procedure. I would be scared to get an RNY or a Bypass, I am happy getting a Sleeve (and this was a decision I thought a lot over to even get to it), so the thought of so many revisions due to GERD scares me to even get this done in the first place. It makes me wonder if I will be one of those who undergoes this too, I don't have current GERD right now, sometimes I do get heartburn maybe three times a month, but I'm not taking anything for it chronically. Anyone have any thoughts? Thank you so much! You are assuming everyone has Gerd on needs revision? Not everyone acquires GERD or needs revision after surgery. Know that many of us have no complications and are doing fine years out. (I’m five years out) Your surgeon would be the one to talk to about having heartburn three months at a time and considering sleeve.
