    Why did you choose bypass?

I'm only 2.5 weeks post-op. I chose bypass for a lot of reasons mentioned above. It has so much solid, long term data studies backing it up whereas the sleeve is more recent, and I only wanted to undergo surgery once (hopefully!), not get the sleeve and risk it not going well and wanting a revision. I was borderline diabetic as well. My sugars were normal and they took me off Metformin before I left the hospital, and my blood pressure is now super low even though I am taking 1/4 the dose of inderal I was before surgery. This still kind of blows my mind. It's early and I have a long way to go and I'm still scared, but I wanted to go with the procedure most likely to prevent me from ending up diabetic ( it's in my family) Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  2. I just had a revision to rny. I love it! So much better!!! CHose that because I had reflux with the band so the sleeve was out.
  3. Hello Everyone, In 2000 I had a Vertical Gastric Banding here in Oklahoma City by Dr. Mason Jett. Over the years I've had several symptoms that have been disconcerting. Is there anyone else out there looking into getting a revision? What are you looking into...sleeve or a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass? Thank you in advance, Amy

Pain where my port used to be

My pain went away too after my revision, give it some time
  5. My surgeon refuses to do it in one procedure. She did note that other surgeons do it in one, but I went with her because I trusted her track record and she was in-network. I waited two months between procedures. It was a pain to take additional time off of work and such and I was pretty disappointed when I first heard about two surgeries. But I'd had two bands, the first 17 years ago, so I was a little concerned about what she'd find going on in there. We only talked briefly the day after the sleeve surgery (saw her colleague for the 2 wk follow up) so I only know that I had to have a hernia repair (hadn't expected that again) and that there was kind of a mess of stitches or something that had to be undone from my band revision seven years ago. I just feel really grateful that all went well. I'm loving being sleeved. The experience is so much different than with the band.

    Which procedure to choose

I think if my doctor recommened me to do the lapband, i would run screaming at the top of my lungs the other way. In fact, when i went in to the office in Nov to discuss removing the darn thing (banded 2010), both told me right out that the majority of doctors are no longer not only not recommending it, they are no longer performing that procedure. I had my revision on 1/23 from the band to the sleeve. I say skip the band and opt for the sleeve if those are your choices. Best of luck.

    Approval Question

I had no problems getting approval for the band removal and revision to sleeve or bypass. I have Blue Cross. Good luck, hopefully it will come through for you shortly!
  8. Hi, Had my band in 2010 and my revision to a sleeve 1/23/17. I can tell you so far so good. Surgery went well per the doc. Was in the hosptial over night & home the next afternoon. I'm allergic to pretty much all narcordics so i was in a bit more pain than probably should've been. Still it wasn't that unbearable. Biggest thing i've learned this time around is that i'm truly not hungry, even before the surgery. I think it was the premeir Protein shakes, they did their job. I realized though that we just eat out of habit at home. My biggest struggle right now is getting the 64 oz fluids in and i believe that's because i wasn't taking my time sipping. I've slowed down and things have gotten better. On the pureed food as of yesterday. I down 26 lbs as of this morning and plan on getting back into the gym next week and on full gym routine by the start of March.
  9. Hi Misty, i had my revision from the band to the sleeve on the 23rd. Please feel free to PM me anytime. I just started my pureed foods yesterday and hoping to get back to the gym next week to at least walk & back to routine by the end of February.

Pain where my port used to be

I had the same pain when I had my band. I could always feel the discomfort where the port was exspcially at night. I feel a 100 times better since my revision. I am 10.5 weeks post op. I felt the same pain discomfort till about week 5ish. Then one day I just noticed it was gone. Completely pain free in all surgical areas now. Good luck it should feel better soon Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N910A using the BariatricPal App

    Anyone 370 lbs or more?

Started my journey at 426. Had my band to bypass revision at 390. Six months post op, I am 281. I still have a long ways to go and weight loss has definitely slowed, but it's still working and I am going to see it through until I reach my goal.
  12. I am also currently going through this process. I had my sleeve about the same time as you, Oct 2014. I was a band to sleeve revision at that time. (Had band 5 years). I was having reflux at that time and my dr said sleeve may or may not be a problem with reflux. I have not been able to get off of the nexium and my endoscope last month showed Barrett's esophagus in 4 spots and I actually refluxed for the camera. After seeing that damage, I felt better about the bypass. My dr explained the process and said it is virtually physically impossible to have reflux with the bypass. I have come to peace with this as I really need to get off the nexium and the attacks in the past 6-8 months have still been very severe. I have my appointment tomorrow to finalize everything for insurance. Good luck, and if you need someone to discuss your situation and fears too, let me know!

I do NOT want to tell my dad.

I can understand in the sense of someone not being able to keep a secret. I am hopefully revising to the sleeve from the band. I few years after I got the band I found out my mom told my grandparents, her sister in law, etc that I had surgery. I was so mad as I am a private person and didn't want anyone to know. I unfortunately have to tell my parents, as I need their help to and from the hospital and taking my dogs for the night. But I really don't want to, I do not want them to tell people again. Which is why I'm waiting until I get approved (hopefully), but I'm going to reiterate that this is my business and no one else's Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  14. I wanted the sleeve so bad and my surgeon told me I would hate him if I went through with the sleeve. I have no info to give you, but from the articles I've read bypass seems to be the cure for reflux. I had damage from years of reflux so bypass was strongly suggested. He told me I'd be begging for a revision if I went with the sleeve. I just wanted to say best of luck to you. I know this is a tough decision. I will say I've had no reflux since surgery last week. 15. I'm 2.5 weeks out from band to sleeve revision. Let me just say...yay! Totally totally different. Very happy. I had a band for 5 years and the port discomfort never truly disappeared during those years. I didn't always feel it but sometimes it bothered me mostly getting comfortable at nighttime in bed. I just feel like I always knew it was there. I think the pain I'm having now is where the port used to be?? It could just be bc that's the biggest incision?? Did any of you have this?know it's still early but I'm hoping this will heal and eventually feel normal. Also this far out which position should I be sleeping in? Sleeping on my back hurts my back sleeping on my side hurts that previous port area. Sigh. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  16. I can defintly frelate to what you are going thru, my hubby has been going to the VA for his medical treatment. They never told us that he had Cancer in his Kidney. They knew for 3 years before he was tiold. My hubby has struggled with his weight forever. He had a Lap Band that eroded into his liver. They were going to dp a Revision to a RNY but he ended up with abcesses and was so sick for 10 months, 3 of which he doesn't remember. HARD TIMES!! After he got his dignosis they told him that he needed to lose 150#'s before they can do anything for his Kidney. So we went to Mexico for his WLS. They couldn't do a RNY because of all the scar tissue he has. His whole right side is almost solid scar tissue. He is trying to lose it and he is well over half way. But it is like he takes 1 step forward AND 2 steps back!! I am so scared for him!! But I may not be a genuis but I do know he has to do this himself!! I try in every way to help him, and then he just eats stuff he knows isn't helping him. They told him if he did nothing he had 5 years with the lasdt 2 being hell!! It has been over 2 years now. If only he would take things as serious as I do. But that isn't his personality. I'm the worrier he is the happy go lucky guy. Hopefully, he will make up his mind and GET ER DONE!!!
  17. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to post this in 2 places, but I am...(It's also on the gastric bypass page) Hi there, it's been a very long time since I've been on the boards. However I had gastric sleeve surgery in September 2014. It has been very successful, I've had virtually no complications. I only need to lose 20lbs to be at my goal weight. However, I had acid reflux prior to having this surgery and for whatever reason, the person that did my endoscope prior to surgery ok'd me for the sleeve and I stupidly thought that once I lost weight and was eating right, the acid would somehow go away. I was wrong...I don't know if it's really worse than before surgery but it is certainly not any better. I've taken prescription medicine for about 20 years for acid reflux and I still continue to need it now. I've had a few attacks in the last 6 months that have been what I would call sever. I am also concerned about new reports linking dementia and osteoporosis to acid medicines. I went 2 weeks ago to see my gastric surgeon about this and I didn't really know what to expect at that visit, however once I told her what had been happening she said here are your options. First, thing was do nothing up your acid medicine and the second thing was revision to by pass. The second one, I was not expecting, it never ever crossed my mind that I would need a revision. Now the surgeon explains how the bypass would get rid of the acid, however I have a friend that has had a bypass or still takes acid medicine. I go tomorrow for a PH balance test and an endoscopy to see what things in there are looking like, however I'd like to know after bypass do you still have acid issues? If you do, I'm not sure what the point of revision would be. Also if I were to get the revision, how much more weight would I expect to lose? I don't have much more to go and I would worry that then I'd be to thin....(never thought I'd say that:)) Anything you'd be willing to share would be appreciated.
  18. I'm almost 5 years postop. Its been difficult. I began going through a divorce with in 3 months, then my father got sick, then other stuff started happening. I didn't stay focused and began eating bad.....I never made goal and I have since gained another 25 pounds. I am looking now at a revision or mini gastric bypass. If I had it to do all over again, I would have done the bypass first...

    Lifting and calorie intake

Here is my 2 cents worth: I work out 6 days a week, 3 days 1 hr. cardio (HIIT and Medium mixed), and 3 days weights with 30 min moderate cardio. I eat about 1900 cals a day and it breaks out to about 30% carbs, 50% carbs and 20% fats. I found that this is a 40% deficit in cals, based on my activity levels, and have been at same scale weight for 30+ days. I have seen lower fat levels and slow muscle growth, so I am not too concerned. I have 15 lbs. of fat left to lose, and plan on cycling my calories/carbs soon and I feel my scale stall is partially associated to some metabolism slowing. (Been in big calorie deficit for 9 months now) My revision seems to be much looser and allows me to eat much more than many with RNY do, so getting this much food in is only a little challenging with 5 meals a day. I mostly focus on getting in proper protein, and making carbs fibrous, except right after training, so I am not too concerned with the totals values. My fats come from clean sources only, mostly coconut, flax and olive oils, and lean meats, and I feel high fat levels of the right fats is OK, if we can handle it. It has taken me a while to get to this point and a lot of trial and error to get the right fit, and I am sure you will need to do the same. I suggest tracking your diet and any changes and measure the affect every week or so and adjust again as needed. No trainer know you like you. Best on your journey. . .

    Road to revision

Has anyone had a revision without having the band? I had my gastric bypass in August 2013 and I lost 107 lbs but have regained about 20 lbs. I'm up and down right now but I'm thinking about a revision. I'm in Charleston SC if there's any mentors in my area, pls reach out to me. Sent from my SM-G930T using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve or lap band

Do not get the band!!!! The research says if you do your chances of another surgery are about 50% by year 10 and continue to go up thereafter because of complications. I personally never would choose a surgery with a 50% long term complication rates that are severe enough to require surgery. Unfortunately that data was not available when I got mine so I became a statistic and had my band revised to bypass last year. Love my bypass.
  23. Hello, getting a revision from a band and am starting to have some questions. For a person who suffers from constipation which revision would be best the sleeve or bypass? Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  24. I was revised from band to sleeve in one surgery on 1/23. My surgeon said there was a lot of scar tissue but everything has been fine so far. Maybe it depends on the Dr. My dr is the chief of bariatric surgery at a hospital and I do trust him. I did not want two surgeries but in case you have too, I really felt all my pain from the port removal. Anyone that I have spoken to that has had sleeve only said they felt great the next day and could return to work within a week. Hope this helps. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
