5 Days Post Op and Here's My Story :)
Tippy2us posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi New Friends, I’m 5 days post-op and here’s my story… At my heaviest I weighed 265 and I’m 5’2. I’ve dieted my whole life and only twice Iwas successful enough to lose 50 lbs. The last time was in 2005, on Weight Watchers. I was down 50 and feeling great then in 2006 mysister, who was my best friend, died suddenly, our house sold, I got a new job,and bam it came back really fast. I wasso disgusted with myself and majorly depressed. One night I got on the computer and read about Lap-band surgery. Icontacted a surgeon and had the procedure in 2008. I lost 50 lbs. but hated itthe whole way. Lots of pain while eating and at the location of the port. It was never adjusted quite right, too tightor too loose. I also never lost more than50 lbs. after 3 years…So during my last annual visit with my surgeon in Januarywe talked about it and he asked if I had heard of VSG. Now, I had to pay $7,000 out of pocket forthe lap-band, but he said insurance companies are paying for VSG, and thiswould be a lap-band reversal as well, and he was right. I already know I’m going to be happier. I’m pretty sore, especially where the portwas removed, but I already feel better. I’m happy I found this forum and I plan to stick with you guys all alongthe way. Thanks! Fast Weight loss Online at the Weight Loss Center -
I used to suffer from sinus and upper respiratory problems *constantly*, as did my youngest son. Then, about 15 years ago, I discovered that eucalyptus essential oil kills airborn bacteria. So I bought one of those little potpourri crocks...looks like a crockpot but only holds about 1 cup of Water. I put half a cup of water in it and about 10 drops of eucalyptus oil and the water warms up just enough to give off the aroma but not enough to burn off the oil quickly. I also put some straight oil into a mister bottle (you can get them in the hair care aisle at the supermarket) and when I change the bedsheets, I mist the mattress pad and the pillows. I do this in the morning so by night it just smells fresh. The purpose is to kill dust mites (yep it does that too) but the bonus is that the smell will go through the whole house and kill airborne bacteria. I'll put about 1 Tbs in the rinse water when I wash the sheets to do the same thing (kill dust mites). I can't remember the last time anyone in our home had a sinus or respiratory problem. Oh, and my son and I are both asthmatics and don't have a problem with the aroma from the oil. Since you already have a sinus infection, you might try putting a few drops of the oil in a bowl of warm water (warm enough to give off steam (but don't boil the water!), put a towel over your head and the bowl and breathe in the vapors through your nose...assuming you can. Most places charge an arm and a leg for this stuff, but you can get a 16 oz bottle at Rainbowmeadow.com for about $14. Last time I priced this at a health food store, they wanted $8 for a little 1/2 oz bottle.

Ok, this is more of a vent because I'm sure some people on here can relate or sympathize since my husband doesn't really understand. My husband noticed that I've been a bit depressed lately so he said he would watch the kids and gave me his credit card to go clothes shopping since I've been living in the same 4 outfits for almost a year. Any other woman would be ecstatic, but I on the other hand, HATE shopping for myself. I stood in the dressing room with my size 24 capris and 3x tops wondering how the hell I ever let myself get this heavy (tipping the scales at 290 and im only 5'3"!) I cried the whole way home and gave the hubs a horrible attitude as I walked in the door. Now I'm sulking in the living room while he eats dinner with the kids. He says my weight doesn't bother him, but how can it not? He's so handsome, has a great body and could probably land himself something a hell of a lot better looking then me. I know I know, he's a great guy and loves me for me. But what he doesn't like is that I've simply stopped caring. I'm a stay at home mom. A FAT stay at home mom. I rarely get out of my pjs never mind do my hair or makeup. I need this surgery so badly. 3 more months! I just have to make it through 3 more months. I have an apple body, so it's all in my stomach/arms/face. How do you ladies (or gentlemen) make yourselves feel better? What can I do to help to "care" about myself until I get my surgery and lose this weight? Any specific clothing types that flatter plus size women? I bought some jewelry and makeup and I'm going to try to put the effort in for my husband. And to think when we met, I was the hot college cheerleader!! Ugh, thanks for listening to my extremely depressing rant!

With both of my pregnancies now (currently almost 10 weeks pregnant) I was only able to keep my 'green zone' fill level in until last week. My body swells when I am pregnant and I get so tight I cannot keep food down. I had half of my Fluid taken out last pregnancy and gained 60 lbs! This time around, I only got 1.5 cc taken out so I can try to maintain some of the weight loss and not gain an excessive amount. I'm using My Fitness Pal again as well to try to keep myself in check. I know there are people who can go through all or most of their pregnancy without getting an unfill and some get it all taken out right away. It really just depends on your surgeon and your body! I wanted to wait longer to get an unfill, but I just couldn't do it!

I know how much myself and everyone else love comarison pictures. I hit 50 pound loss a couple days ago (HW 230 CW 180) so I thought I would take update pics. Also have bare belly and arm pics for those that are curious about loose skin along our journeys. So far with just 50 my skin is good, arms are flabby but still alot of fat hangin in there and I've always had very large arms, also skin on abd is good so far, I can tell a little more give in skin on upper abd but I'm hoping over more time that it will keep tightening and I can avoid the plastics in the future. 30 pounds til goal now Hope these help those that are very newbies and those considering surgery -
Hi! I'm Kathryn and this is my story...
Tatinkg posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hi everyone, I'm Kathryn and I'm new around here so please forgive me if I'm not too familiar with how things go around here....so let me start at the beginning, I guess... I've always been fat...even as a child. I weighed 8lbs when I was born and apparently that was unprecedented in the Philippines. And as I grew...oh did I grow...and it just did not stop. It took me a very long time to accept myself the way I am. At one point I was able to lose about 29lbs after my divorce by watching what I ate...not even exercising. But then a great big stress happened. My youngest brother was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer in 2013. He recently passed away in July 2016. I was his caretaker. After he was diagnosed, I just let go of the healthy habits I had like watching what I ate and I was just not eating healthy. Of course this brought sadness to our family and at the same time the weight came back and more. Right around his funeral I just noticed I have not been able to do more physical things like getting on a treadmill, walking for long distances, kneeling on a church pew--something as simple as that. Thereafter I went to my doctor who referred me to an orthopedist. He told me my right knee needs replacement and that was the only thing that would improve my knee. Meanwhile I was only 39 years old. I did some physical therapy which made it better for a bit. I then realized that maybe it would help if I get weight loss surgery. Around the same time, a friend was also in the process of getting hers done. A doctor friend advised me to do it and said she would support me and even offered to medically clear me for surgery. So here I am...since May 2017, I have been going back and forth with appointments with specialists and with dietician visits at Harlem Hospital. My appointment date with the surgeon is on November 9th. I believe thereafter, they will decide a surgery date or what have you. I guess I'll wait and see. In the meantime, thank you for the platform and support. I will be perusing the forums with things that may interest me. Best of luck to all of us. And thank you for the opportunity. -
IMO, too much of a fill is worse than not enough restriction. It's unhealthy and your weight loss slows, because your body is holding onto every thing you put in, because it's so little. I put up with being too tight for a month and finally went back and he a bit taken out, OMG, what a relief that was and is. That was over a month ago, and I have no desire for a fill any time soon. I have the small band too, 4cc. Don't try to be a hero if it's too tight, get a little taken out so you can eat properly.

I also posted this on the Doctors/Hospitals board, but wanted to put it here as well - hoping to find some people who can answer my questions! Can anyone tell me about the surgical weightloss program at Brigham and Women's hospital in Boston? I'm registered in mid-December for one of their information meetings on weight loss surgery, I know my insurance is accepted at this hospital, and should approve my surgery. But I'm wondering about details about this program - how long do things take (initial meeting through surgery), what other appointments or tests do they require, any comments on the psych meeting, which I think is pretty mandatory with all of the surgical programs? Really want to have Dr. Vernon be my doctor - can I choose? Basically, I'm a fairly anal person, and really like to know what to expect at every step of the way - also would be interested in talking to others who have had their surgery done at this hospital. Thanks!!

Really Disappointed With Such Poor Weight Loss-Insight?
Territravel replied to samomom's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sounds like your metabolism needs a jumpstart! I'm 15 weeks and i've been through two stalls. I had read somewhere, that taking in too few calories could hinder weight loss..I tried adding adding calories and fat to my diet, and lost three pounds..Same thing after the second stall. I'm not saying it will work for you, but it's worked for me. Good luck! -
Success in Inches, not Pounds from Current Bandsters
alicesandra replied to krps0930's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
My gym does weekly weigh ins. I got a print out two weeks ago with all my current progress (weight/body fat/inches/etc) and according to that I've lost almost 52 inches since I had my surgery. They measure upper arm/thigh/hips/waist/bust, so I don't have the individual inches for each thing, but just the all around total for loss is almost at 52 inches. Hoping for more when I do my weigh in on monday! -
Hi everyone! 1st I just want to thank everyone on here, you guys have been such an great encouragement ! I stumble across this website by accident while searching for information on wls. This site has really pushed me to making the first step in my new journey that I'm looking forward to! I contacted my insurance company(united healthcare) back in June about wls but never followed up. Got busy with work and school, I started weight watchers back in June and I'm trying but I really need a lil more help(lap band). My manager lost over 50lb with them and every day is track track track with her. We write the point values on everything thru out the branch lol. She has been such a great inspiration to be myself together and lose. Now I'm so ready for this journey and know that's its gonna be a be challenge... Reading people's posts on here and I so identify with them and realize that I'm an emotional eater, I'm a cancer and we are very emotional people and have struggle with weight problems all my life so food is a comforter. So I called my insurance company again last week and had to re enroll in the program again (hopefully I don't have to start the whole six month diet thing again and they say the last few months don't count ) I'm hoping to have surgery by the end of the year. So I got my first appointment next week Sept 5th at the center of excellence in Ny Presbyterian hospital( my employer will put $1,000 in my MRA account if I go there) !!!! Hopefully everything will fall in place and go smoothly. I do have some kind of mass in front of my heart(the found it last dec and don't know what it is, and I had a PE (clots in the lungs) and I'm on lovenox but stopped a few months ago and cuz my hair was falling out and the bruising but just started back again a few weeks ago and bruises r back so the dr told me to stop again n get more tests done to see if I still need it and the right doses.) so some of that might be a Lil 'hiccup' in my journey but *fingers crossed* it won't be Reading the post and people's experiences on here have me starting to prepare for the changes I need to make and more aware of the habits I have.

I have not stalled yet and I'm sure I will it seems like so many people do stall at one time or another. You really can't compare your own weight loss with others. We are all so different. Just know that we all loose at different rates. I bet you are not doing a thing wrong. Follow your plan and you will be successful.

can't remember the last time I felt pretty....

Amazing loss! I am so happy for you!!! -
Hi riverrat -- I would mention it to your surgeon...but tell them what you're OB said. Better to have your surgery put off than to them have a surprise once they go in or for your recovery to be more complicated, especially with a little boy to care for. Everyone experiences the nervousness you are feeling...it's perfectly normal. to answer your questions: I had my surgery on a Thursday before Labor Day and was back at work Tuesday. No regrets -- except I wish I'd been better about communicating with my surgeon when I was too tight after fills. The end result was that I did have slippage -- from vomiting, which came from being too tight. I had it repositioned in March and had my first fill since then on Monday. All that aside, still no regret. No hair loss. And, a PB is a "productive burp" which may or may not include the food in your pouch. Good luck to you. I hope everything goes well. Keep reminding yourself of how many of us were in the same place you are right now...and we all came out on the other side! Elizabeth

20% Long-Term WL?
Inner Surfer Girl replied to songsmith's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I have never seen any information about projected/expected weight loss for bariatric surgery that bases it on initial weight. All of the studies/data I have seen base it on excess weight. -
just want to know I'm not alone....
VSGAnn2014 replied to kranky813's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, it gets better. In fact, it gets much, much better. It gets so much better you cannot even BELIEVE right now how much better it will get. :) This is the sucky time. So go find some "one year anniversary with pix" threads here and read those. And imagine you being one year out and at or below 140 pounds (your weight loss goal) and wearing a size [insert your dream size here] and looking 15 years younger and having more energy than a baby goat. :) The first week is really tough. And the first month may not be so great either. But after that it'll all seem so much more normal. And within months you'll be able to eat (gradually) everything you couldn't possibly eat right now. But just not as much. But you won't freak out over that either because ... you / we / I all ate like pigs before VSG. Do you want to eat like that again? No, I knew you didn't. Instead, you want to wear Size [yeah, that one] and weigh [yeah, that weight] and look like [just imagine it] and be so proud of yourself you could bust. :) Feeling better yet? -
The mighty scale
Dub replied to highfunctioningfatman's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Personal philosophy is good to establish on the subject, I suppose. The scale is simply a tool as far as I'm concerned. It shows one single metric.....my weight. As a weight loss surgery patient, I find the scale a damn important tool. Clothes can lie....as we all can dress with larger or smaller cuts of clothing or even change colors and the look/fit is different. The scale, though, shows the cold hard fact of whether or not I've lost or gained. It's gonna be a huge tool when I reach the fighting weight I want to live with, too. It takes only a few seconds to hop on it and get a reading each day. Trends can be countermeasured in a swift and easy way. I'll keep fresh batteries in my scale and look forward to the weight readings at various doctor's appointments. It's a number that I'm proud of and will remain proud of. That was sort of the point of bringing out the big guns and attacking my weight with the aid of wls. It is a priority in my life and one that drives many other aspects. Keeping it under wraps will better ensure that all else goes smoothly. I need my scale and the data it can provide. So do my doctors. Being defined by my weight......nope. I get what you are saying there. I was a jovial fat guy. I still am. Just not quite as fat and hell of a lot more healthy which makes me happier. A smile now isn't forced....it's genuine and full of relief. -
Closest thing to 6 months out as I have...

You, my dear, look beautiful! OMG that is an awesome loss too! And you know what? whatever we are this Christmas it's going to be so much more better than last Christmas -
vitamins and other supplements - I get my vitamins at Walmart. Citrical chocolate chews and Centrum chewables early on, (now I just swallow pills) but get a "petite" variety when I can. Protein shakes - Syntrax Nectar Iced Lemon Tea, later, Quest bars and PowerCrunch bars. I lost my taste for milky, thick shakes for a while and preferred a water mix product. Skin products for sagging - I try to remember to moisturize with a product containing cocoa butter daily. Not sure if it's helping but it smells nice! Exercise IS helping some especially around my arms and legs. Hair products for hair loss - Been taking a biotin supplement since 3 months pre-op. Never really saw much hair loss and my nails are in GREAT shape!

How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
Tiffykins replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I followed a very basic, low carb/high Protein meal plan. I ate 4 meals per day, each meal had a minimum of 15gr of protein. This accomplished 2 things; 1) kept me within my calorie/carb/protein guideline 2) kept me from snacking which is heavily discouraged. My plan stated 600-800 calories, NO more than 30-40gr of carbs (and this is ALL carbs, good/bad, white/complete/whole grain etc, a carb is a carb), and at least 60gr of protein. I ate lots of meat, cheese, greek yogurt, and eggs once I got to regular food. Carbs are my enemy when it comes to weight loss/gain, and like I said, I don't care what source of carb they are classified in. I had a totally boring meal plan, but a little creativity and recipe tweaking made things much easier. -
You look great! Such a dramatic difference but very natural looking. You look at least 10 year younger! Excellent job on the weight loss too! Congrats!!

How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
Tiffykins replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgery date weight was 263 as well, and at 5'2" a BMI of 49. I low carbed it, and pushed Protein for the first 6 months until I got to goal. You'll have to find what works for you, and your body. Plus, I'm over a decade older than you. Follow your surgeon's directions. The "average" of percentage of weight loss in 12 months with the sleeve is only reported to show about 65% from my recollection, but you can read in the "Success Story" section of the forum that many, many, many of us have lost 100% of our excess weight in the first 6-9 months post-op. Best wishes ! ! ! -
How much weight will i lose (about) in 5 months?
ldydrgnkpr replied to jasleeve's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had asked the same question. I am not that far out from surgery. The difference is as leeblewb stated a lot of women are much younger on here. I'm 46, starting weight 233 5,1 my bmi was 43-44. I am seeing an average monthly loss of 8-10 pounds give or take. I am hoping to be at my goal before end of October or damn near close. I too do low carb. No white carbs what so ever. Exercise 3-4 times a week. Everyone is different on the loss that they experience. Adhearence and following your surgeons guidelines is key. Good Luck!!!!! Keep us updated. Deb -
