  1. How do we get those neat weight tracker bars that everyone has in here?
  2. I decided when I started this journey in May 2015 that I wanted to live. I wanted to physically live to see grandchildren, but I also wanted to fully engage in life. I have been doing that pretty well for 60 years but I didn't want to decay bit by bit as I saw family members age with health issues. So I had surgery in late September. Part of the process was going to be a trip to Europe with my just graduated college child. She has been my biggest supporter (this morning - mom, I can Heimlich you now as she wrapped her arms around me for a hug). We just got back from three wonderful weeks in Great Britain. I climbed every one of the hundreds of steps in each castle. Walked five to 10 miles a day. Had a flat in London that was two flights up. Up and down stairs in the tube. At one cathedral I thought I had reached the top, only to find another staircase even twister and steeper than the first few. I looked up and could see no end to it. I turned away and started back down. I stopped. Did I do all this to not go to the tip-top of the cathedral? Of course not. I deserved the whole experience and that included the breath-taking view from the very top. The best though was passport control when I arrived. The immigration officer looked at my passport, then me, and said, well you've lost a lot of weight. Good job. I smiled and told him thanks. And made a mental note to get a new passport. I have many more trips ahead and although I enjoyed his noticing, I want all future immigration officers to see a face that matches the passport! Oh, and I lost five pounds!

    hunger??

That means the band is working, it's doing exactly what you want it to do. Eating too fast was a big problem for me pre-banding, and I'm very glad that it keeps me from doing it. That's the key to my losing weight--I'm eating slowly, thoughtfully, and as a result can stop when I've had enough. It's not good to let it happen too often, since having the food come back up can put stress on your band and your esophagus and lead to problems. If it's happening to you a lot, try to change your eating habits. If it's still hard to eat solid food even if you're chewing a lot and eating small amounts at a time, you may be too tight and need a small unfill.

    Is VSG appropriate for me?

What other vitamins would I have to take? I already take Vit D twice weekly and B 12 injections every other week. How long did it take you to lose your weight?

    First Fill And Still Hungry

I just had my 1st fill. I'm at 6cc's. I'm feeling the exact same way. Seems to be a "normal" feeling. (It's just more of lap band hell) Everyone keeps yelling at us to be patient. I say... screw 'em. Time is money! ahahaha --- We will lose the weight. We just have to be............ patient. (I'm so sick of hearing that!!) Hang in there.

Help me with my macros please

Looking back at MFP diary, it looks like a lot of 25/35/40 carb/protein/fat lately. I am a bit concerned for my kidneys with maintaining such high protein over the long term. I should also say that I'm just as concerned for overall health as weight maintenance, so I do want a good macro balance. I don't seem to be super carb sensitive. My surgeon tests metabolism again at 1 year, so I have a few more months before getting a precise measure. So for now I can only estimate.

    Vitamin Water ?

In addition to Protein shakes, crystal light and coffee I am really starting to like Vitamin Water. The thing is 1 bottle has about 250 calories in it !!! I can't drink a whole bottle at 1 time , but was just wondering if anyone had thoughts on vitamin water? Do you think the extra Vitamins are worth it or is it just sugar water ? Right now I have it on occasion as a treat & it hasn't affected my weight loss but I am not sure that it fits into my new healthy lifestyle
  10. Does anyone have a maintenance plan for when they reach their goal? Or are there any vets out there who have kept the weight off for 1…2…3 years or longer? If so how did you transition and from losing to just maintaining.
  11. I will have my 6th visit on August 9. Calm down! Anything good is worth waiting for. When I started, I told my doc that I really wanted to establish new eating habits. It was hard sometimes. I ate right and exercised. None of that was fun! My weightloss was slooooow and steady. Since then, I have lost 35 lbs. :cheer2: Somedays I was ill......especially when I didn't lose weight. Hindsight.......I am glad I did it. It allowed me to prepare for my new eating and especially learn a lot about calories and serving sizes. The biggest plus......I have 35 less pounds to lose. Take it in stride and learn to eat better. Your Insurance Company knows...only the strong survive!!!:fencing: Before you know it, you will be approved and scheduled for surgery. You will have to adapt to eating better after the sleeve anyway.

    6 month supervised diet... really???

I've been trying to get this surgery for over 2 years now. I've done the 6 month weight loss routine 3 times already just for the doctors to tell me last minute that they did not take my insurance. I've went to several seminars, support groups, dietitians, and psychartrics and it's become overwhelming. As you can see I have 3 times the amount of knowledge then Most because they went thru it once and I think it's a waste of my time. I'm jus spending, spending, and spending... Hopefully I don't get a repeat of the last 2 years this year.

    Surgery tomorrow, some questions.

we've all been there...yo-yo'd...I have been "maintaining" for a year now... I would like to lose more, but I have physical issues (soon to be addressed since I have lost enough weight for surgery) ... once my knees are replaced, plan on go...go...going! the tool you recieve with this surgery is such a gift... I can't even begin to tell you how it's turned my life around so far!!!

    Surgery tomorrow, some questions.

relax! You are not clear on how you think you rushed the surgery option. I can tell you, I wish I did this DECADES ago... I feel so much better and more in control than I ever have. I was SO READY for the surgery, I couldn't wait! You don't list your weight or specifics...but all I can say, if you have been approved, go for it and follow the program, it is meant for success, as are you!

    Confused

Stick to what you think is right for you. Neither surgery is an "easy" way to lose weight. You are going to have to work at it with either procedure. My experience has been that doctors that push the bypass are the surgeons who either don't do the band or don't do it well. My SIL had bypass surgery about a month after I had my band. I have lost more weight than she has. Why? because I work at it harder than she does. She doesn't exercise, eats six meals a day (actually I think she grazes all the time.) and makes poor food choices. I try to make wise food choices, only eat three meals a day, make sure I get my Protein in every day, and I walk 5-7 miles a day. There are many people who have been successful with both procedures and many people who have failed at both procedures. Do your homework and then stick to your guns about what you will or will not do to your body. For me, it has been the best decision I have ever made for my health. A year ago I couldn't walk 1/4 mile without using my inhaler. Good luck on whatever route you take.

This is a personal choice of yours. If you want the gastric band procedure tell the surgeon that. Fact is that the bypass surgery is a higher costing surgery then the gastric band surgery is. I am a person that needs to lose more then double my body weight. I have a bmi of about 58. I will have to lose well over 200lbs. I have chosen the lapband because it is a tool to help me lose the weight. Not the miracle cure that I often times get the feelings that surgeons try to pass off the RNY as. Fact is you will lose weight with any WLS surgery if you do what you are suppose to do. It's still on you to follow through. At least with the gastric band you are not hacking up your body to do it and it is something that can be adjusted until you hit that sweet spot unlike the RNY being toted as the one size fits all miracle cure.

I chose the band beacuse it has a lot less complications. I am 5'2 and started out at 318lbs I now weight 228. I have lost 90lbs and still losing. It is a slower process, but I know my insides are all in tact and that if there is a complication the band can be removed. I have 4 friends who have had the bypass and 3 of them have gained over half of their weight back. With the band after I lose all my weight and I start to gain. I can go back and get a fill. Do your homework about both surgeries. It is your body and your decision not the doctors. Good luck on your journey.

    out of control.

I put on 10 lbs before surgery-and then had to loose 18 lbs before they would perform the surgery My Dr counted the weight I had on the day I first saw him, the weight I had to loose was initially 8 lbs but because it takes a while to do all the testing and getting approval I gained 10 more lbs. In April I had to start dieting I had 5 weeks to loose the weight by my pre op check in-or surgery would be cancelled. I did manage to loose it thank goodness

    Jan 21

Jan 21, 06 -- Saw Dr. Billy on Thursday and he gave me the all clear. He and I discussed what I was doing now opposed to what I was NOT doing with the band. I am doing the Nutrisystem meals and counting my calories like mad. I am ever so gradually getting back into my exercise routine. He also wants me to start two lists. SIGH!! One list is of the "thing" that are keeping me from losing weight. Something like eating after 8p, or eating too many calories, etc. Then state how I can correct that issue. Make a plan on how to correct the behavior. The second list is of all the foods I love to eat. Once I have exhausted my pea brain of the items, he wants me to begin with the first item and learn everything I can about that food. He wants me to take a picture of the food per the serving. If chicken is my first item then get a pic of a serving (4 oz) both cooked and uncooked. Learn what the calorie and protein values are of that serving. Take the pic and the info and put it into a folder or notebook so I can refer to it. Do that with all the foods I list. Pic one food a week to learn all I can about it. This will be an exercise in diligence. And consistency as well. SIGH!! OH If I had just done this while I was banded. All in all he was very pleased with my progress while on Nutrisystem. He wants to see me in about 8 weeks. We did not even discuss my options post band removal. I guess it really is too soon to discuss that. In the meantime, I have just completed my Video for the Biggest Loser. YIPPEE!!! I will get that mailed off in the next couple of days. I wanna tweak it some.

    Before 10-10-2011

From the album: Journey (Original Title!)

Another before picture, taken about 6 weeks before surgery. Weight about 275.
  22. Getting excited and nervous! Surgery approved and scheduled for September 4th with the possibility they may move it to the 3rd due to a cancellation. All my pre-op lab work and testing is done and without any concerns. Same for my psych eval, barium swallow, chest x-ray, EKG, and EGD. Did all my pre-op nutrition appointments (I was fast tracked, so there weren't as many as most of you had). Did the pre-op group class where they explained my pre-op diet and what to expect at the hospital and post op. Started my bariatric vitamins last week. Purchased any food/supplies that I think I might need for the first couple weeks post op (my husband even told me to get him a new bigger TV so I can have a TV in my room the first couple days lol... and he got a 65" screen out of it lol). Today I did my final pre-op weigh in and doctor visit. Saw another doc first (teaching hospital), then my real doc. Signed my surgery consent. Too my surprise, the doc also told me that it doesn't matter how much weight I lose now, I am totally approved for surgery (before I had to be careful I didn't put myself under a certain weight and disqualify myself). YAY! I also asked him about how much time I can take off work (I have 14 weeks of sick time saved up and a supportive employer- not that I actually want 14 weeks off, just didn't take all my sick time over the many years I worked there). He said a minimum of 2 weeks but up to 8 since I do have a fairly physical job. YAY! I could probably get away with going back early, but why push myself when I have the time and support? I would rather heal, adjust to my new diet(s) over the next month or so, and slowly build a new fitness routine before going back to the craziness that is work. Not sure how many weeks I will actually take off, but good to know I have options. And then finally, I went to a pre-op anesthesia appointment. Answered all of their questions and signed their consent. So... all that is left is to call and confirm the time of my surgery the afternoon before! And how did I celebrate? I got my last meal of my favorite Indian food. Yum! And my husband is TRYING to be supportive of all of this, but he really doesn't want me to have what he considers to be elective surgery. I understand where he is coming from, especially since every one of his surgeries has had some sort of complications. But my surgeries have all been routine and without complication. And I really need to improve my health and this seems to be the only way to get me there.

    3 weeks Post Op

@ Mikeross. My starting weight was pre op was 317#. As of 02-12-13 I am @ 287# ! I am trilled at the weight loss, so far, but really can not wait to see the possibilities that lay ahead. I will say that I had lost a lot of weight prior to surgery also I did a 7 month pre surgery program, for insurance. My original starting weight was as of 02-21-2012 was 347# so on the program I lost quite a bit. Total down so far is a whopping 61#!!!!!! I need to get new clothes soon!!
