    69 yrs old and unsure..

Good luck to you! I'm 64, really glad I did the surgery, even considerding I'm a slow loser! A couple years back, I was already fluffy at 185 pounds, had to go on streoids for about 2 years and put on 40 pounds, All my labs went up! HGA1C was so high I was one pound away from being diabetic. I'm now normal blood sugar, cholestrol normal, off blood pressure meds, down 46 pounds. But at 9 months out I still need to lose another 20-30 pounds. I'd like to get down in the low 150s. This is not about looking good in a bikini but getting health again. I do not regret having the surgery at all. I wish I had done it sooner, but it does have to be the right time to put the time and energy into it. I do worry about the 15-20 pounds they say is normal to regain right after you hit the bottom weight. The hair loss that started at 3-4 months post op is slowing down, good thing becuase I only have so much hair.

    OFFICIALLY LOST 100LB

Congrats! That is wonderful, I don't think I'm going to get to 100 pounds. I'm 9 months out, down 46 pounds and still working on 1-2 pounds at a time. If I could do the protein shakes for 3 weeks I could probably dump a huge amount of weight at one time. But thats keto and hard to stick to! Some people can do it, I get to low energy. I'm trying one day a week do just protein drinks all day! I'm encouraged by all of you!

    Regained it all

These are great videos! Thanks for sharing. I'm still 9 months out and trying to hit the 50 pound loss! I was down 47 pounds, was able to eat a few more carbs, but apparently ate way too many carbs and back up 2 pounds. I would love to lose another 25 pounds. For myself, I've had to re adjust my mind, get back to daily mediatation, I cant increase workouts from injuries, so I just keep doing what I'm doing there. I will cut back on carbs, increase my protein and go back to using the app to keep track of what I'm eating. Its so easy to fall off the wagon! Plus, my appetite is slowly coming back. Some days I'm eating 3 meals plus a snack. trying to have more salads and healthy soups. I don't think there is any easy way out, its always the same old thing, eat healthy proteins and low carbs, lots of vegtables. No processed foods. Easier said than done. It feels so overwhelming sometimes when I think about, what can I eat, what can't I eat, but it always comes back to the same thing. I wish you the best in your juorney to lose these extra pounds!

    Missed period

Hi ladies. Any updates? I ask bc I’m kind of starting to panic. I have regular periods, and I’m now 2 weeks late, and I’m 5 weeks post opp. I do ovulation tracking with sticks and so far no LH surge has been detected. I also have taken 2 pregnancy tests and they’re negative. I don’t feel pregnant (I could tell with my child before before even testing) but I’m still nervous. We do want to add a baby in the future but not unless and before the weight stabilizes. I really hope it is the Hormonal changes from the surgery.
  5. Was your surgery for bypass? I just got my revision done last week just wondering how the weight loss goes after. Thanks for responding. Sent from my SM-S906U using BariatricPal mobile app

    Sleeping

I stayed in a hotel for a few days after - I just did pillows around myself to stay on my back. By about week 2 I was able to sleep on my side again. Sleeping after that surgery was easy compared to Tummy Tuck 🤪 I need to have legs and back elevated, and my back is so sore. (I’m only a week out)

Another stomach sleeper here. I slept in my own bed from day 1, I did have an extra pillow and sometimes one under my belly too, when I slept on my side. Either side was sore at the start, changing position was sore and getting into and out of bed was sore but once I got in a reasonably comfy position I could sleep. I didn't take pain relief other than a little paracetamol either. The pain lasted a couple of weeks, mostly in my left side, and then I was still aware of discomfort in certain positions for another couple of week. From about 6 weeks on I was back on my stomach and I have remained there ever since.

    October 2022 surgery support

Hi Snetsky! Mine is on the 24th as well. Best of luck to you and to all us surgery buddies scheduled on the last week of October week 🙂
  9. Hi David, Well I have some gerd with weight gain with my vsg surgery which was in 2018. So last year I asked if I can get resleeved due to the weight gain and slight gerd issues. and i was told in California they don’t do that the only option I had was bypass, So I went with that..my surgery was cancelled at 0100 last year due to my iron levels. I had to do the 10 week class as part of the revision requirements. So I’m all cleared now (this year) i plan on doing things way different this time around and actually puttin in the work..with my sleeve I didn’t workout or anything (I don’t advise that all) plus we were in the pandy sooooooo crossing fingers that I find things that help me along this new journey so I stay consistent but it’s all mental Honestly!

So I've had three surgeries in three weeks (mini gastric bypass, plus two emergency surgeries for bowel obstructions due to internal adhesions from the gastric bypass...). I'm a stomach sleeper and planned to sleep in a recliner if necessary, but after the first surgery, I was fine propped up with extra pillows for a couple of days, and then within 4 days, I was sleeping on my stomach again. Healing from the last emergency surgery is taking much longer (I don't think I was meant to be cut open THREE TIMES), but I was still able to sleep in bed the first night home (3 days after surgery), as long as I was propped up. It wasn't so much pain, but more that the swelling from the surgery seemed to press more on my stomach when I wasn't flat on my back.

    New, Dazed and Confused

Yeah I developed it in my teens too. No I'm a revision due to... GERD. I had Lap Band first. Zero Yelp ⭐ Do Not Recommend. I would be the incredible shrinking lady if I lost 180 pounds in 3 months, lol. The sidebar stats here don't really give the opportunity to show that you've had revision, but you can see it if you click to read a persons profile... if they've updated their info.

Wow, now that's worth considering. I've had IBS since my teens. Thanks. I just noticed your weight loss - 180lbs in 3 months? Wow, just wow.

    Sleeping

I slept in bed from immediately after my surgery. No need for extra pillows, a wedge or anything. I’m a side sleeper & often sleep with a twist so my bottom half is 3/4 over & slept that way in hospital too. Didn’t have any issue getting in or out of bed either. Was careful though just in case. I do have a high bed which may have helped 🤷🏻‍♀️ but I could get off my couch without issue too. Was the same after I had my gall removed. I guess it’s another one of those individual things. Like some find they need a binder & others don’t. It may depend on your surgery & whether you had anything else done like a hernia repair. It could depend on how much weight you carry & where you carry it (like a lot in your abdominal region). Who knows???

    Bariatric friendly alcoholic drinks?

i stopped drinking in the first day of my 2 week pre-op diet. And no, i didn't have to take a blood-alcohol test at any time. Had my first drink (2-3 sips of red wine) at around 3 weeks post op. Had my 2nd (partial) drink around 2-3 months post which gave me one of the worst dumping experiences i have had to date (it was a sugary soju-sake cocktail). I had maybe 4-5 (partial) drinks during weight loss phase: vodka sodas or very dry red wine. Now im just a normal regular drinker for the most part (but i still try to stay away from overly sugary drinks). Im 4 years post op.

    Sleeping

i took one of my couch's back cushions and brought to my bed to prop myself up on to sleep. Did this for a few months. It took a couple weeks to get used to cuz i was a stomach sleeper prior to surgery. At first it was for ease of getting out of bed as well as to alleviate abdominal pain from surgery. Later, after i healed, i used it to alleviate any middle of the night regurgitation... i was very susceptible to this in the early months. Im 4 years out now and i sleep with regular pillows...in every position imaginable lol. Edited to add, i do sleep with a small pillow underneath my stomach/hips (if im stomach sleeping) now to avoid back pain in the morning though...now that my stomach bulk is gone, i seem to hyper-extend my lower back when on my stomach so the pillow helps.
  17. I don't think it can be avoided. Some people get gerd after vsg and others do not. But, people who do get gerd after vsg, it is not their fault. Unavoidable. Of course if you eat right before going to bed, it doesn't help the matter but here is a good link that explains in layman's terms why 35% vsg patients get gerd. https://sampadocs.com/2019/12/23/reflux-after-gastric-sleeve/ Here is another very recent study if you would like to read it. It goes into the 3 reasons which contributes to gerd post-vsg, one reason is the shape of the sleeve. It is a hot topic now. https://www.jnmjournal.org/journal/view.html?uid=1643&vmd=Full

    Sleeping

I tried all three (bed, recliner & propped up). I'm a stomach sleeper, so I knew going in to it that the recliner and propped up don't work all the well for me. Obviously stomach sleeping right after abdominal surgery is problematic as well. Day 1 -- I tried the recliner and it was comfortable enough, but I didn't sleep all that well Day 2 -- Moved to the bed, propped up. This didn't work for me either because I kept sliding off the pillows and eventually worming my way on to my stomach. Day 3-5 -- back to the recliner for a few days Day 6 -- With the surgery gas finally gone, I was okay sleeping on my stomach again and have done so since. I guess my thoughts are: if you don't have a recliner, it would be silly to buy one just for this. I have heard of people renting a medical recliner or even a medical bed from a medical supply house, but this seems like overkill to me. You could always check on the cost of this and decide if it's worth it to you. A bed wedge may work better than just pillows if you have that available? Your overall success here may depend on your preferred sleeping position.

    August surgery buddies!

I am 8 weeks out as well. I've lost 29 pounds but can't see it at all, either. I am down about a size, though. I'm not too worried about body dysmorphia yet. I'll be concerned if I lose all the weight I'm shooting for and still think I am fat. I had a roommate in college exactly like that, in the days before we knew what eating disorders were. I was stalled for 3 weeks, then lost 5, now stalled again. Frustrating, but I guess normal. I agree it's helpful to have others going through the same process. I spend a lot of time here and on Reddit.

    I just don't know

Hello all its been years I think since I've been on the boards. Weight loss wise I am doing well maintaining my 100lb plus weight loss from my sleeve surgery on Mexico 3 years ago. Relationship wise things have been great until recently. A little background we have been married 20plus years and have adult children. My husband was okay with my surgery and very supportive of the surgery. We work in the same industry and for the past 6 years have been working together in a predominantly male dominated field. This has never been an issue until now. My husband recently was switched from the shift we worked together and moved to another one. When he was notified he'd be moved he had them move me as well so we could continue to work together....no big deal whatever even though I was very happy where I was. So now we are on the new shift and not in the same building and it is eating him up he has become very insecure. He doesnt question what i wear or anything like that he is jusy super insecure. Since we are on a new schedule and delegated to specific buildings he can't pop up in my work area anymore and lay eyes on me,we don't have lunch at the same time, and he is attempting to get that changed. He hasn't said anything to me directly but he gives coworkers mean looks when they look at me and tries to stay stuck to me as much as he can. I'm genuinely not understanding why he is behaving that way and it's very shocking. I don't plan on leaving him I'm just concerned as to why he is doing this all of a sudden. Anyone else dealt with an issue like this where you work with your spouse and they became insecure? I think I'm gonna talk to him about it soon I just wanna vent because this is coming out of nowhere. At first I told him about things coworkers would say to me because of transparency but now if I feel it's too much I'd just go to hr if it's bad because I'm sure he would blow his fuse. Lately anything I tell him a coworker says he wants to confront them. I have convinced him not to but this puts me in a bad position and I wonder if I should continue working with him or find something else. Advice?

    Anyone from Minnesota?

New to the group! Hoping to get my approval from insurance in the next week. I’m nervous as heck as I’m worried they will deny it even though I meet the requirements!
  22. Surgery was on a Thursday, back to work that following Monday. I worked from home for a week & the following week I went into the office. No one knew a thing lol!

    September 2022 surgery buddies

I had a banded gastric sleeve on 15th September so I'm just over 5 weeks post surgery. Things are very different over here in Australia I first saw my surgeon in July and a few weeks later booked a date that suited me based on what days the surgeon operates at my chosen hospital. I am not insured so I was able to withdraw the funds from my superannuation account. I had 2 weeks of pre op diet which consisted of 2 meal replacement shakes and then dinner of approx 100gms of protein and 2 cups veggies so found it quite easy to follow. I'm currently on a soft diet slowly reintroducing foods to see what I can and can't tolerate it's certainly a learning curve. I take 2 multivitamins a day which have everything in them that I need. So far I've lost just over 20kgs since I saw the surgeon and 11 kgs since surgery so 21kgs all up. I'm really happy with the changes so far and don't regret having the surgery at all. I journal most days and weigh myself once per week. I also take measurements. Everyone will cope differently. Some of you will lose tonnes of weight quickly others may be a bit slower. I'm going to try and not compare myself to others. Good luck to you all on your journey Sent from my SM-S906E using BariatricPal mobile app
  24. Surgery is in two weeks!! It's been a HELL of a road getting here and now it's finally coming!! I don't know whether to laugh or cry lol. Anyone have anytips on what to bring to the hospital? Or good things on Amazon to get?

    Gas Pain

Walk, walk, walk. You can also march on the spot, lift & lower your arms, do some deep breathing & heat pads can help. The gas, which is in your abdominal cavity, tends to rise & gets trapped under your diaphragm pressing on your phrenic nerve which causes the pain. It can take up to a week for the gas to be absorbed into your blood stream & then breathed out. (It doesn’t escape your body by farting or burping as many presume.)
