Sorry to hear you are having such a hard time. I've read too many times about people's bands giving them trouble. It makes me wonder why it's still a WLS option. :lol0: Anyway, I had a hietal hernia that I didn't even know about that Dr. Aceves repaired while doing my VSG (free of charge :lol0:). It would be good if you could have yours repaired at the same time of your revision. Good luck!

Need Revision to a Vertical Gastric Banding
Travelher replied to amyjane79's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I just had a revision to rny. I love it! So much better!!! CHose that because I had reflux with the band so the sleeve was out. -
The yahoo group says it's a lap band group but he really isn't doing many bands these days. He is doing more band to sleeve revisions than anything else.

Under 50 lbs to lose - would you recommend the sleeve (after band removal)
certifiedcoder replied to Cleo's Mom's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I can relate to your journey. I had my band in 2005 and a revision in 2009. I also have a dilated pouch and esophogus inflamation. I am scheduled for a revision to the gastric sleeve in 11 days! I am so excited. My band has been opened and refilled an now completly opened after my pre surgical Endoscopy which showed all the damage. I have gained 20 pounds in 4 months and it is killing me. I sustained 100 lb weight loss all these years and instantly - BAM I am gaining! I am very encouraged by the posts and reviews I see from people who have converted. Seems like a second chance to really reach goal without shutting down to liquids only... I loved when my band was tight. I could barely eat at all and I worked out like a fiend! It is not that I am eating BAD foods now as I mostly eat very clean, I just eat too much! I cant wait, I am counting down the days! -
It was too late...
Threetimesacharm replied to BeautyInProgress's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had surgery in Mexico and it was the best thing I could have done. Have surgery now when you are young and have your whole life ahead of you. Don't wait; after my Mom passed I had plastic surgery and again the best thing I could have done for myself. I am sure your father is with you now and would want you to be healthy and lead a long life; try bariatric pal surgeons I am going again for a revision and using Dr Zavalza. best wishes -
Gain 3 years out. Considering revision. Help
WLJourneyJ posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
i was sleeved in 2012 and lost 110 lbs within 10 lbs of goal weight. Did plastics and was loving life. About 6-8 mo back though I noticed less and less reStriction ( I could easily eat a whole sub sandwich Before it was maybe equivalent if ¼. I rarely if ever eat breads Etc. sometimes if Out I'll have a little piece of baguette but anyway). I'm hungry and I could eat way way more. I've now gained back enough to where my bmi is getting up there again ( 20 ish lbs) and am considering revision. Resleeve? Other option? Has anyone done this? I'm active several times per week and with the exception of an occasional night out with friends am a salad and Protein girl. My work schedule will allow time off for a redo in August if needed. But I'm not sure what to do. Master all this hard work and all the plastics too I don't want to go backwards. I feel a little failure even though i do feel my diet is pretty solid -
Our time has come! I have been doing clear liquids all day after my 10oz of magnesium citrate ugh!! Anyone else have to do this today? I just packed for the hospital. Packed clothes for my little ones to stay at grandma and grandpa so that hubby can just be with me. Now this is real. I'm so nervous today. All I have been doing is praying that the revision goes well and that I could be back home with the kids by Wednesday. I have never been away from my almost 2 year old for more than 1 night and that just happened a few weeks ago. So I just hate leaving the kids. Prayers going up for all of us soon to be sleevers tomorrow. I know there were quite a few of us! Good luck everybody!!

@@honeysmash I'm glad you'll get to have a revision. I get my band removed and revised to gastric bypass all in one surgery in January 2016 (soonest insurance will approve it). Keep me posted if you don't mind. Take care!

Welcome! I'm sorry you have to have a revision but I wish you a great outcome. At least you've been through this before, so you know the drill (although it's a different procedure, I know).

Anyone get bypass surgery for gerd?
CyclicalLoser replied to atomicbeing's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had terrible Gerd, then I got the lap band. All of the gerd went away (Or so I thought). I woke up in the morning spending the first couple hours clearing my throat. The surgeon told me it was probably "silent GERD". Right after my revision surgery from the band to the RNY, the throat clearing was fixed. I have a family member who was thinking about having bariatric surgery. They have GERD really bad, and the surgeon also recommended the RNY. He said that the sleeve is a high pressure setup which has a tendency to push up stomach acid. This is coming from a surgeon who does mostly sleeves, so I wouldn't say he was biased against sleeves in general. -
Drinking too much wine
scoutmom replied to imaginegirl's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Hi, I just found this thread - and I wonder how you are doing? Its been awhile since this post but it really resonated with me. First of all - opening yourself up on this forum takes a huge amount of strength and I give you kudos. As for me, I LOVE my chardonnay.....all my friends and family joke about that is my fav thing. (at my big birthday last year, every single gift had a chardonnay theme :-)) Everyone's drinking has their own level of what is "too much". I had a revision 5 years ago and lost 80lbs...on cloud nine, felt great and had an amazing experience. Four months after surgery, I started drinking again. I was able to "drink through" my sleeve and starting gaining the weight back year 4. Drinking for me leads to very bad food choices especially late at night. I also developed severe GERD and a hiatal hernia that were both so painful, and what felt best was comfort food. Today, I am one week out from a revision from a Sleeve to RNY. My surgeon suggested it as the only way to get rid of the GERD. If I could pass along what I have learned this past week - is that the challenge of not being able to reach for a glass of wine is real. It has shown me how much I was drinking. I won't say it is harming my daily progress to meet the protein, water and exercise needs. However, I will say it is making it more difficult mentally. Like a fly swarming around your head reminding you - "you can't drink right now!" Not a good distraction. Only you will know what is best for you - but I do wish I had stopped drinking all together at least a month or two prior to my surgery. This is a marathon not a sprint, and I am here to support you if you need it. I know exactly where you are coming from! -
Seriously considering making the change
sarbear1_2000 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was banded 9 years ago, and lost 60 kgs. I have recently started gaining weight about 14kgs, feeling hungry all the time, being able to eat lots to not much, some reflux and weirdly a few times woke up like choking on what must be stomach acid. I have had a barrym swallow which showed an over tight band and my esoghegous was slightly dilated. I have a meeting with my surgeon Friday and I am thinking I will just bite the bullet and get my band revised to a sleeve. Any advice?? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Hi! It's been a while since I've been online, I was waiting (what seemed like forever) for my surgeon to refer me to an experienced VSG surgeon, and I FINALLY have the consultation appointment this Tues 4/6 at UCLA with Dr.Mehran! I am so nervous, I am scared that they will reject me for the VSG because I am "damaged goods" since I had the band for 7+ years and when they took it out and tried to convert me to the Bypass, my previous surgeon said my insides were too scarred to do the conversion. She did think I was the perfect candidate for the VSG, since they would be cutting out the damaged part of my stomach anyways. Ok, so here's my question: What kinds of questions should I ask the surgeon at UCLA-I don't want to seem like a "know it all" cause I'm not, but I do know a thing or two about the way one feels after weight loss surgery, since I've been through it (and lots of complications). I am so worried that they will reject my case entirely because I am a revision and they have perfect statistics and may not want someone like me to mess up their stats (in case something goes wrong). I attended their seminar and they boast that they are super strict on who they pick to do surgery on- I'm pinning all my hopes on this-I really need this tool ! Since having my lap-band removed I have gained another 10+ pounds and that is with really watching my foods! Sorry to ramble on- Does anyone have some advice on what kinds of questions to ask, or how to let them know just how serious I am? I've got everything organized in a binder, including my most recent labs, and all of my medical history.

From someone who knows: Yes, over eating WILL stretch the pouch. It will stretch over time anyway and if you keep doing it, by grazing or over eating at a meal, it can and will stretch more. Yes, you can eat more, but the hope is that you've learned to eat only what you need; which is less than what we ate before. But if you're silly, like me, you over eat and end up having a revision. It's a tool; not a cure. An upper GI will show the pouch size, as would an endoscopy. You'd have to have a medical reason and Dr. order for either of these and it wouldn't be done solely to see the size.

NeedaBreak4Me replied to sarbear1_2000's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
The hunger feeling that you are having could be from too much acid.. ask your doctor for a PPI. As for the weight gain, if your band is too tight as your barrium swallow shows, it might be a good idea to get a large unfill, let it rest for 2 weeks then go back for a refill... I found that when my band was playing up an unfill would do the trick... But if you were in the red zone you wouldn't be able to eat much food.. unless you are eating soft slider foods. Because you were banded and lost a significant amount of weight be aware that weight loss is much slower when you get revised for a 2nd surgery... for 14kg i would suggest the unfill and refill technique and try going back to basics. What are you currently eating? How many calories do you consume? Are you exercising? Are you tracking your food? -
Sleeve to gastric bypass HELP SO TERRIFIED
1maryreigel posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hello my name is Mary. In 2008 I had lap-band surgery. I lost about 40 pounds and that was it. I had a lapband to sleeve revision in 2012. What a nightmare it has been. I have gone from 235 pounds to 140. I was down to 120 and still losing. I was so sickly looking. I made my own protein shakes that were about 1200-1500 calories a piece to be able to gain the weight. My problem is from the moment i had this surgery I have always thrown up. I was not even able to swallow my own spit for a while. I was so dehydrated the first week I had to have IV fluids. The second week I ended up in the hospital for 8 days. Another exploratory surgery where they found a piece of scar tissue and removed it. This did not help the problem. They even tried putting me on nausea meds that they use for cancer patients with no help. I had to have a pic line in my arm for a week. I finally was able to come home. I was so weak and sick I seriously thought I was going to die. I have threw up everyday for the last 4 years. I have had barium swallows, endoscopy and my bariatric surgeon wants to convert it to a bypass. For almost 2 1/2 years I have just refused. I once again had another endoscopy this morning and the gastroenterologist and my bariatric surgeon both said that I have a curve in my sleeve and only a small amount of food is able to pass through and the rest is coming up. I am 54 years old I can not even go out to dinner with my husband to eat dinner due to the throwing up. I am looking for someone who has had the sleeve converted to the bypass. How bad was it?- 5 replies

Kinda Sorta Gotta Date! (I Think)
raquelrdgz replied to lessofme's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I agree with DLCoggin BUT I wouldn't tell everyone and anyone before surgery because 9/10 will be negative about it and will try to discourage you. I love how the thin ones want to tell me I can do it on my own and that all I have to do is watch what I eat and exercise! IF it were that easy there wouldn't be an obese person out there and this option wouldn't exist. I'm having revision surgery due to a failed lap band but only a hand full of people know and until I'm losing the weight and I am asked-I will not put it out there. I'll avoid the negativity as much as possible. (my two cents ) -
About 4 months for me. The longest was the one month wait for the approval. Why does it take so long i have no clue. It should be 24 hours. Anyways June 23rd is my revision to bypass day

GET THIS THING OUT OF ME!
nightingale2u replied to Angelita33's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I've been banded for 9 years and I can't wait until April 1st to get it out! My I have been unfilled for 7 years as my stomach wouldn't tolerate them and my port site always hurts! I am having my revision done in Mexico as my insurance will not cover a revision to the sleeve. I had to refinance my house to pay for it but I think it will be worth every dollar I pay to get rid of this band and have a tool I can actually work with! -
Your story sounds so familiar. I was banded 10/2010. I had no problems the first 14 months, but only lost about 45 pounds. Then I began having increased reflux and I would also go from being able to eat nothing and throwing up if I did, to eating an enormous portion of something that I wouldn't have expected to be able to eat. I then gained back about 20 of the pounds that I lost. OUCH! My doctor began to talk to me about a revision to the sleeve. I knew that the band was hurting me, physically and emotionally but to be honest I was scared of another procedure where I would experience failure. It took me over 6 months to decide to have the revision. When the doctor went in I had severe gastritis and esophagitis and pre-ulcerated lesions, as well as the band having come up too high and the presence of a hiatal hernia. I just had surgery this past Wed. 3/20 and what was supposed to be less than two hours was close to 4 hours of surgery for him to clean out all the scar tissue, repair the hernia and do the sleeve. I was in pain and nauseous for the first two days but yesterday and today I am feeling much better. I don't know if this will be the answer for me, but I knew that I had to get that band out even if my insurance didn't approve the band, but fortuantely they did. I feel skeptical but guardedly optimistic that this will be a better procedure for me and I hope that it works well for you too!

The year following my surgery.
Tiffykins replied to excited2lose's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am sorry that he made those insensitive comments. I would be upset as well. Changing surgeons always scares me, but it's something that I know I will have to face because my surgeon is military. He is deployed right now, so I have to see the surgeon (Dr. Riley) that assisted him on my revision. I think very highly of both of them. Dr. Riley is phenomenal, and took care of me while I was hospitalized in July. He'll also be the one performing my GB removal surgery sometime this next week. I always have to mentally prepare myself that one day Dr. Michel (primary surgeon) will get orders to go somewhere else or my husband will get orders and we'll have to leave. As for follow-up care, if you want to change, I would find a surgeon that has performed VSGs. My follow up has been a little more extensive due to complications. I had labs done at 3, 7, and will have 12 month labs pulled in June. We've discussed him doing an endoscopy at my 1 year follow up, but I'm not sure if we'll actually follow through on that one. Once I pass the 1 year mark, my PCM will order my labs, and the only reason I'll have to f/u with the surgeon is if I have a sleeve related issue. -
Thank you, I had the bypass in 2001, & I've had lots of problems At that time it was fairly new. Just had a revision Monday not by choice but a have to case. They had to remove lots of scar tissue & part of my stomach. I feel so bad any suggestions on how to start feeling better. I know it's early

Revision success

Thank GOD. I can’t wait. I’m having my revision Tuesday. -
I recently got out of an outpatient surgery by Dr. Duckett from Northwest Ohio Surgery Specialists to repair my lapband. I was originally banded on September 2006. Over time; I lost quite a bit of weight- but during the last year; I noticed a sudden to gradual loss of restriction in my band. I found Dr. Duckett of Maumee and made an appointment with him after noticing some weight gain. I told him that I felt that I had gradually lost the restriction in the device. He checked the device and discovered that I was correct under the scope. The band had leaked at the port location and throughout. I have two incisions currently. The first is where my port is located under the left breast- the second is through my belly button. After having the tool for six years; I am glad to get a fresh start and start the journey for a second time. I plan on using this to my convenience to lose weight before my first pregnancy and to lose the weight after I deliver
