  1. Finding doctors to provide post-op treatment as needed can sometimes be a problem as most docs are wary of taking on the liability of other doctors' patients (this can apply whether the original surgeon is in Mexico or the US). Routine follow up like labs and such are not usually a problem and can be done thru ones PCP and are usually covered by insurance as routine health care. As to which procedure to get, do as much research as you can on them. I'm no expert on the bypass or mini, but there are reasons why the mini bypass has never been accepted by the ASMBS or the insurance industry in the US. It has been around for a long time - some docs were promoting it when my wife and I first got into the WLS game some fourteen years ago, and in the meantime both the DS and the VSG have been accepted as mainstream procedures, but the mini has not. This also plays into any "plan B" that one may have in that since it is not well known in the general bariatric community, this makes it more difficult to treat and/or revise in the future if such is necessary. I would certainly stick with a more mainstream procedure (though a case can be made for a newer procedure like the SIPS/SADI which hasn't gained acceptance due to its novelty and a track record hasn't been established, as opposed to the MGB that never gained traction despite it having been around for a while.)
  2. OK so i was initially submitted to insurance for approval(revision from lapband to vsg) in Dec 2016. I was initially denied because they said I didnt have enough documentation stating it was medically necessary to remove my band nor that I had followed up with the post op diet recommendations after my lap band. I went to meet with my surgeon and he submitted more info per BSBS request. Well they denied it again, this time I was told they thought my band was removed in July 2016.. ummmm no this damn thing is still in me. Sooo they submitted again.. so where along the line a peer to peer happened(which no one even told me we were at that stage), apparently that was denied so now it's in the appeal process!!! It's been like 2 weeks and still no answer!!! Has anyone ever had to go through all of this I have BCBSIL???? Please tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel. Has anyone ever done an external appeal? HELP!!!! #tiredofbeingfat #thissucks #i'msofrustrated
  3. @@JerseyJules Have you already had WLS? It states your surgery date is Jan 2015. Are you thinking of having a revision? Kate
  4. Hello, everyone. I am a long time stalker, first time poster of this forum. I got the lap band in 2012 at 302 pounds (my heaviest ever, at the time.) After getting banded, I lost 35 pounds but I had to fight for every ounce to come off. I never felt like I was in the ‘green zone’ that the clinic continually talked about. I went in religiously for fills but never felt like I could eat small portions only three times a day and be satisfied. I even questioned my sanity and if head hunger really had that much control over me. After a year and only 35 pounds lost, when I needed to lose at least 150 pounds, the NP told me that I could not get any more fills. I was experiencing some stuck episodes but the NP said that my band was already at 8cc’s in my 10cc band and it wouldn’t hold any more fluid. So I left bawling. Here I was – a year out from surgery, having paid out of pocket for this device that didn’t do bunk to help with the hunger like it claimed to. So, I quit. I stopped eating healthy, I stopped trying, I stopped caring. I did that for a year and kinda maintained my 35lb loss but that was it. I eventually went to my primary care doctor who wanted me to start Metformin ER, but they are massive horse pills and because I needed the extended release, I couldn’t crush them. So I went back to my clinic and had all the fluid removed to take the Metformin. Well, long story short, I’m now sitting at 325 pounds. So I’ve gained back the 35 I lost in 2012 and have since packed on an additional 25 pounds. Last month, I had family in town and many people taking pictures - full length, unflattering angles, kinds of pictures - and posting them online. I had a coming to Jesus moment when I literally didn’t recognize myself. I’ve never seen myself as big as I am. Last year, I had two friends get the vertical sleeve and both get phenomenal results. I’m finally ready to take care of myself and finish what I thought I started in 2012. I’ve contacted the clinic that both of my friends went through and have a consult set up for next Monday. Does anyone have any advice or a similar story? I am almost frozen in fear when I start thinking that because the band failed for me, the sleeve will too. I cannot pay out of pocket for a second bariatric surgery and not get results. I don’t think I can mentally survive that.

    Band removal denial...

Can you appeal. I had been denied for lap band and appealed and won. I have since had it removed and revised to sleeve. Your band needs to come out for sure. Good luck. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  6. I had a lap band revised to rny. I love it! Good luck with your surgery.

    burping? Kink in the sleeve?

Hello Vets, I've been having increased burping and I'm almost 5Yrs post op. Its been fairly smooth sailing so far in terms of complications (only limited ones not worth mentioning). Now I'm burping uncontrollably. I do not have any any heartburn "typical" symptoms. I'm taking Pantoprazole along with just starting on Carafate. I did not have any GERD prior to surgery however Dr. Aceves told me that I had a hiatal hernia that he fixed during sleeve surgery even though I had no idea I had it. I'm told I may possibly need a revision sleeve to bypass which I do NOT want to do but the new surgeon doctor (I was operated on by Dr. Aceves so I can't see him about this unfortunately, may he RIP... ) told me I may have a "kink in my sleeve". Apparently sometimes they put a stitch or two in to keep the sleeve from floating around. My sleeve was not stitched into place to keep it from flopping around so I guess it may have a kink. I'm supposed to get an endoscopy scheduled in the next few weeks with a GI and the (new) surgeon doc wants to be present to see what she's working with. Has anyone ever had this happen this far after surgery? Confused and concerned...
  8. In 1999-2000 I had a Vertical Gastric Banding (mesh) by a Doc Mason Jett in OKC. Over the past 17yrs I've countlessly struggled with vomiting, avoided meat, bread and Pasta due to everything getting "stuck" or anything spicy due to terrible reflux. Also, I've had some serious issues with not being able to have bowel movements. So I've constantly been on fleet pills, suppositories and other devices to be able to go. Needless to say I'm terrified at what they are going to find when they do a scope. My abdomen is always very distended especially up top above my belly button. BMI is 33.3. I have my 1st consultation on Thursday 2/9/17 and I will have to be a self pay so I'm certain I'll be able to arrange the revision surgery quick. After the research I've done I'm going with the roux-en-y gastric bypass. Crossing fingers that this will be a better solution for a life long way of living. If anyone is in a similar situation I would love to buddy up. Please reach out, Amy Thank you in advance, Amy
  9. I'm 5'4 and was 189 day of revision.

    So many questions about MGB

Hi. I know this is an old post but I am a current VSGER considering being revised to a MGB. I'm 5"6 and 220 lbs and I've just been wondering if I would be considered large enough for the MGB. My BMI is 35. I've heard of some Mrs not approving the MGB because patient wasn't overweight enough. I will also be going to Tijuana mexico btw. Thanks for any input.

    Sleeve with GERD?

I was concerned about that. I do have gerd that did get better when I had a hiatal hernia repair with my band. Now I'm waiting to hear if I get approved to revise to sleeve (had my last appointment on Friday, yay). I had asked and my surgeon said it can be controlled with meds if it happens. Not that I want to be taking a PPI for the rest of my life. But maybe I won't have to and I'll b ok Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

    Sleeve with GERD?

I ask the staff about my worries about getting sleeved with gerd every time I go for a weigh-in. They assure me that most people experience improvement after the sleeve. I have a hard time believing that after all I have read. They said if my gerd becomes worse that they can do a revision to a bypass. Sigh. I should be scheduled around the end of April-early May. I drink almost a whole box Walmart brand fruit punch (crystal light) a day. Pink lemonade was my favorite, but it was giving me severe gerd. I take dexilant 60 mg a day. 13. Ok peeps, there are enough posts about people needing sleeve to bypass revisions due to GERD, that I'm not sure which path to take. I am planning to go with Dr. Illan in Mexico. I do not have a history of significant heartburn or acid reflux. I sure don't want the surgery to start it! (I live with someone with terrible GERD, and it is awful!) What do y'all think? 14. Hey guys, I was banded in 2008...never any problems with vomiting or reflux. Also, never lost past the first month after surgery. Began having sternal pain radiating down in to both left and right rib areas in 2012. Surgeon decided it was my gallbladder so out it went. During the gallbladder surgery the surgeon checked the band and cleaned up some scar tissue. Did well with no pain until Nov 2016. I had the lovely gastro virus and vomited 5x and since then have been having the same sternal and rib pain again. I had also had acute reflux and difficulty swallowing my meds in the morning and they felt like they were just sitting there all day. Went to my surgeon and he unfilled the band. Checked under fleuro with everything looking ok with the exception of a slight "backing up" of the barium before it continued on through the band. He told me to take Pepcid complete and return back in a month. He also doesn't perform the sleeve but I spoke with him about going elsewhere for a revision. Fast forward and he sent an inquiry to insurance to have the band removed due to my issues for a later revision to the sleeve. In the meantime I had a consult with a new surgeon who performs all of the procedures and he wants the band out as soon as possible to allow healing before the revision and thinks I will do well with it. Well, right after I had the consult I received a denial letter from Anthem (from my original surgeons inquiry) stating that it was not medically necessary and there was no evidence that the band was the cause of the issues and basically that I suck because I only lost 35lbs with the band and have since gained it back. A week later I get another denial from Anthem from my new surgeons request for approval. This letter was slightly more positive but still a denial stating basically they need more info to prove the band needs to come out. Insurance lady, the bariatric nurse and the Dr plan to have a meeting to discuss where to go next with me and will let me know soon what's up. So here I sit in limbo not knowing if this will happen or if I have to keep this ticking time bomb in me causing me pain all of the time until something life threatening happens to it. Does anyone have any advice on where to go next? I did start taking Prilosec and plan to document the pain daily but what else can I do or suggest be done through the Dr? 15. Appointment went well. Dr says that he is ready to do bypass, of course he wants me to do some strange things, like go to an info session again (seriously!? I have been bariatric since 2009, I know how this all works). But I can get in for that next week and they are going to submit to insurance early next week. I am coming to peace with my decision. He says reflux will be gone. I hope! He also says that insurance should not be a problem for 2nd revision because it is not due to lack of weight loss. He also said to expect 20-25 loss with this one. I weigh 149 now (5'2") so I guess I can deal with that.
  16. Hello there! I had a VGB in 2000 and going for my first visit with a new surgeon on the 9th to discuss a revision to RNY. I'm hoping mine goes as smoothly to surgery date as yours. Thank you in advance, Amy
  17. Hi all. I have had a lap band since 3/2009. Although I have maintained a 70 pound weight loss, the band has been progressively tightened to the point that now I have esophagus irritation so it has been determined to be "failed" and now I need it removed. I started my journey at 320 pounds, and now I am at 250. Goal weight 180 pounds. On Monday I head into surgery to have the band removed (it has been released for two months) and a gastric bypass performed. My question is how many that have has this procedure done were unable to do it in one surgery? The surgeon only gives it a 50/50 shot as apparently the underlying tissue associated with the band site may not support correctly creating the new pouch. I would really hate to have to do this in two separate surgeries several months apart, and apparently I won't know until I wake up how it turns out. All pre surgery checks including a barium swallow and an endoscopy all indicate the band is still properly placed, but apparently they have to be inside during the surgery to know for sure if there has been any erosion. Thanks in advance for any input! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  18. I had a low bmi too! Thanks again please keep me posted about the new revision Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  19. I started out with a low bmi so I did not have that much to drop. I'm 5'8 so 166 is perfect for me. I just haven't been able to maintain it. My entire pregnancy with the boys I only gained 35 lbs and they were twins. End of the day, I'm glad I did both and hoping the next revision is approved! I work out 5 days a week and eat fairly well! Good luck! Please let me know if u have anymore questions. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  20. Wow that is a lot, so once you had the revision you really didn't lose a lot more weight right away? Did you have to have a ph balance test before hand?

    Nervous

I'm nervous too but I have my first consult to the revision on the 9th. Thank you in advance, Amy
  22. Let's see, starting weight 240, sleeve on 12/26/12. I'd say I dropped to 183. Revision to bypass 8/14/14 starting weight around 183. No reflux after revision. So here is the doozy, I got pregnant and had twins oct 2015. As of July 2016 I was 166. However, as of today I am back to 183 (my body is obviously comfortable here), even though I am not! I noticed weight gain from July until December (166-181). I had an upper GI done and my stoma is stretched. My pouch is fine, not stretched at all. So my stoma is rounded now which allows good to pass through too fast, so much so that I'm allllllways hungry. So now I am in the insurance stage for approval for a revision. At which time if approved my doc wouldn't either redo my bypass or staple the stoma so it doesn't gather food and push it through quickly. Revision was easier than sleeve, mainly bc I knew what to expect and the pain meds I had the first time didn't help so I knew what they needed to give me from the start of recovery. My sleeve I was supposed to do one night but bc of pain I did two. My revision was two nights bc it was a revision and they needed to see how my body would react. My second revision would be one night stay. The issue I am having now with my stoma is rare, don't let it scare u. Oh and days off of work, sleeve I did two weeks but it was over xmas vaca so I had the time and just took it. Revision I think 4-5 days and mainly bc of being tired not bc of pain. Please ask me anything else!!! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  23. Ortego07, thank you for your reply! I'm having problems responding directly to responses. How far into your sleeve were you when you had your revision? Also did you lose more weight? How long were you off work? What about hospital stay? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks Ren Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App
  24. So sorry not sure what happened to the reply I wrote, lol. But anyway thank you for responding! I had my endoscope yesterday. She found that I do esophagusitis at LA level B, which I had to look up, lol. But basically I have lesions on the esophagus, showing signs that the acid is doing damage. She also inserted a Bravo capsule, and I'm currently wearing a PH balance monitor until tomorrow evening. Bad part is I can't take any acid medicine until this monitor comes off! I'm dying from the burning! So once I return it on Monday, and she reads the results I'll know more! How did your appointment go for finalizing your revision? 25. I was banded for 17 years (one revision 7 years in due to slippage). I got sleeved 7 1/2 weeks ago and so far I'm thrilled with the results. I'm being very cautious about what I reintroduce into my diet, though. I'm on 2 Protein shakes a day, cottage cheese or yogurt, some sort of protein ( like shrimp) and a few bites of vegetables. I plan to stay away from bread, Pasta, and rice for as long as possible. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
