Heartburn Questions
blackcatsandbaddecisions replied to SunnyinSC's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had heartburn prior to surgery- generally I had it about 1x a day, sometimes more or less. I always controlled with Tums. I have been on 20 mg of Pepcid since I had surgery in early November and *knock on wood* I haven’t had to have a tums since. I am not sure if it is the Diet change or the weight loss or just the Pepcid, but it has been a welcome change. I’m honesty kind of concerned about tapering off the Pepcid in case it’s that because this is the longest stretch I think I’ve had in years without heartburn. So, so far so good from my perspective. -

OOTD: hair Edition! A milestone of sorts today...2 years after cutting off my hair into a pixie, my hair is finally long enough to all be put in a bun! Well, two buns...its not quite long enough to put in just one, lol. Buns were my hairstyle of choice when I had long hair, and the bun "donuts" where my fave bun accessory. I realize I look like an anime character, but whatevs, my hair is in a bun(s)! -

So I had my consultation with my surgeon on Monday. Based on my own research I had thought gastric bypass was the best option for me. However my surgeon said that at my weight (I'm currently 265lbs at 5'3.5") and given my heartburn/acid reflux isn't bad enough to warrant daily medication, he feels like a sleeve would be the better option because there is less risk involved and the weight loss expected would be about the same. I now have an endoscopy scheduled for later this month so they can see if there is a hernia in play, and check damage/issues with my esophagus to confirm my issues aren't severe. This was thanks to the nurse, who was sort of advocating on my behalf for double checking the issues weren't severe. After the endoscopy we'll make a decision on bypass or sleeve then. I'm self pay though, so I'm really nervous that we'll go with sleeve and then my heartburn issues will get worse and I'll need a revision (which I'll also have to pay out of pocket for). So I wanted to check with some folks that have had the surgery about heartburn after. Currently I get heartburn/acid reflux 3-4 times a week and I medicate with tums/milk. It started when I was pregnant and didn't ever go away (even though I lost some weight while pregnant). Usually issues happen if I eat too close to bedtime, eat too much at dinner, or eat acidic foods. Sometimes it's bad enough that I'll wake up coughing in the middle of the night, feeling like I have stomach acid in my lungs (this is when I attempt to drink some milk to get the throat burning to calm down, not that it works well). If you have had similar heartburn prior to surgery, and went with the sleeve surgery, did the issues worsen? Did they get better with weight loss (my surgeon suspects it's a weight issue and will go away after the weight is gone)? Am I being reasonable in my concern or should I just listen to the surgeons recommendations regarding which surgery to get and keep my own fears out of the decision?

Anyone for October 2020?
Koko.G replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Sleeved 10/16 5'3" starting weight was 213 day of surgery, currently at 165. I also need to find ways to incorporate more protein and drink more water. My hair is falling out like crazy, that started about 3 to 4 weeks ago although it does seem to be slowing down a lil bit. My multivitamin also makes me nauseous so I make sure to take it right before I fall asleep so I sleep it off at night. How's everyone else currently? -
First, looks like you are almost at goal...congratulations!! Second, the last 20-30 lbs I personally found to be the most annoying in the clothes department because a 5 lbs loss at a lower weight makes a much bigger difference in clothes sizes. I felt pretty sloppy during this stage because I didn't want to invest in more clothes that fit that would really only be usable for a few weeks. With that said though, I am a big proponent of dressing up a little to boost self-confidence...and this usually means properly fitting clothes. And I mean FITTED. I find baggy clothes actually makes one look bigger. The other benefit of fitted clothes is that it holds everything nice and firm. High waisted leggings/jeans, Tops with fitted arms (at least to the elbow), wrap skirts/dresses that you can cinch at the waist, v-necklines. For swimsuits, before plastics, I was IN LOVE with my high waisted bikini bottoms (i still did wear regular ones, but the high waisted ones were more flattering on me). If bikini's aren't your thing, one-peice suits are also really good cuz they hold all the stuff in. If you are comfortable with it, high-cut leg bottoms also give the illusion of longer legs and slimmer hips. Underwire cups pushes the boobs up and together and result it some serious cleavage. And don't forget the magic of high heels. Makes you taller, your calves look more shapely, and pushes out your butt. Lastly, you are probably your own worst critic (we all are). You may not think it, but you probably already look effing fab in others' eyes. ❤️

I got tired of seeing CARPETS of hair all over my bathroom floor (as well as the trail of hairs I left everywhere else) so I cut off my boob-length hair to a bob, and then soon after, into a pixie. It helped alot (when styled) to hide my scalp which was clearly visible. If you are looking for a dye job, my suggestion would be to get it done in a colour as light as possible (or you can stand) so that the contrast of hair colour to scalp is not as obvious. With that said, it DOES grow back for basically everyone...so take heart it's only temporary. I'm 2+ years out and its all back (plus more, i think...).

Hair Loss and Dye Job
Creekimp13 replied to EllaKop's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My hair grew back curly! It always had a little wave, but the curl became much more aggressive when it grew back. Isn't that bizarre? Yep, lots of greys...I just dye them at home. I use Garnier Nutrisse Light Golden Brown on my dark mouse brown and grey hair and it comes out looking pretty good for about $14 every couple months. LOL. -
I’m so there with you. Although I loved the weight loss, I really struggled with my loose skin. Last summer I spent all the warm weather days in long sleeves because of my bat wings arms. I had plastic surgery last month, a tummy tuck, breast lift & augmentation, and arm lift. I’m looking forward to being far more comfortable this summer! However-now I’m getting fixated on my thighs. They don’t match the rest of me! They are saggy, baggy, and disproportionately chunky compared to the rest of my body. I’m scared of the thigh lift procedure-looking at before & after pics on Real Self it doesn’t seem to make a dramatic difference like other procedures, and I believe thigh lifts have the highest rate of post op complications. I’m trying hard to strengthen my legs hoping that I’ll see some improvement. In the mean time I’m working on acceptance of my current state.

Hello everyone! Mostly a question directed toward the ladies of the group. My hair has been falling out at a steady rate for the past six weeks. my baby hairs are growing in at the same rate. I am 5 months post op. Have any of you gotten your hair done during this time? I have tried to avoid it but at 33 yo my hair is growing back wicked grey. Curious if anyone had an appointment then regretted it after. I expect additional hair loss but definitely don’t want to speed up the process lol. Thinking a cut may help too. What have your experiences been? Thanks so much.

What are some Sleeve friendly foods/meals(Regular Diet) at chain restaurants and FF Restaurant?s
mswillis5 replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Don't rule out protein powder for drinks when you are traveling. The single serving pouches stuffed into a mixing bottle is a great way to go during the weight loss phase. -
First, welcome to Arizona and the warm temperatures that await you. You will be able to get warm weather clothes when you get here as that is pretty much all that is sold in the stores here. I have been having a tough time with clothes recently as well. I have been wearing a XXL and size 44 shorts until recently. This is after 100lbs of weight loss and I thought it still looked good on me. My family on the other hand has said otherwise and told me to go get new clothes. I recently went shopping and bought a 38 size shorts thinking that these would be my new size. I took the shorts home to try on and they fell off without a belt on, there were multiple inches of clearance. I went back and exchanged them for a size 34 and they fit. It is amazing that the sizes go so quickly. I also bought a few size L shirts but they were still too loose so I went back and grabbed a few M and they fit perfectly. I still am in shock that I am wearing a M shirt and 34 shorts now when it has only been a couple of months since surgery. I haven't been this weight in a very long time. My wife and I just had surgery together in November and have lost a lot of weight so far. She is also having to buy new clothes and she does not like shopping at all. The only reason she goes to get new clothes is because the children that she works with tug on her pants and she doesn't want them to fall off. Body dysmorphia is no joke and I agree that this whole issue is just a massive head game.

What are some Sleeve friendly foods/meals(Regular Diet) at chain restaurants and FF Restaurant?s
RickM replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I don't do much fast food these days, or even before, but what I preferred when I needed to during my early days - loss phase and early maintenance - was a Chipotle order of soft tacos, whatever fillings you like but I biased it toward the basic meat, cheese and veg. Early on just ate the filling out of the tortilla, but later included that, too (I never was big on the low carb game - just give me nutrition.) One taco was enough, and I would save the other two for future meals. Generally when we ate out we went to regular restaurants, more often independents rather than chains, and just ordered the healthiest things that looked good on their menu - nothing really special as ?bariatric food" - and split things up to take home the leftovers. Even today, ten years out (call it 16 for my wife) it is disappointing not to get two or three meals out of a typical restaurant meal. -
Scared and Nervous
Delta Lisa replied to Delta Lisa's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I chose it because it has the highest percentage of loss of excess weight and it does not have the dumping side effect. I think I get scared because of the dumping, etc if I eat wrong but the goal is not to eat wrong and of course that would keep me in line for sure. I think it is like pre wedding jitters. LOL -
Very nervous, lots of questions
Creekimp13 replied to heyhiitsme's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Your BMI is low (at 33) for bariatric surgery. Most bariatric surgeons have a cut off of 35 with comorbidities. 40, without them. Have you found a surgeon willing to do someone with your health and BMI? Will your insurance cover the surgery with a BMI that low? Many won't. "If I could do 3 weeks of healthy eating then why would I need this surgery??" this line in your post concerns me a lot. Commiting to the surgery and doing the recovery safely...requires a hell of a lot more willpower than simply eating healthy for 3 weeks. It's a months long process of severe diet restriction. Three weeks of "healthy eating" would seem like an indulgent feast to many of the folks in the process right now. I don't mean to scare you off....but you really should research the foods you're allowed to eat and for how long after surgery. Also, the many hoops you have to jump through. The surgery doesn't do the work for you. You can regain every pound and more. It's a tool that helps you get closer to your goal faster. Once you're there....finding a way to permanently change your habits is daily effort. What does your general practioner think of you having weight loss surgery? -
Some struggle for a while with a lot of inflammation and resultant high restriction, getting in only in the low hundreds per day for a while, and others have a more nominal recovery and can consume somewhat more (not that one shoule necessarily be eating as much as one can!) I was around 900 within a week or two and settled at 1100 for the rest of the loss phase - but that's with a decent guy's metabolism and it still provided a large caloric deficit to drive the loss to its conclusion. Others, particularly women but some heavier guys too, need to stay a little lower - 6-800 it often sited - to ensure adequate caloric deficit through to goal (loss rate tends to decline over time as our total metabolism declines some with declining weight, so it's good to leave some margin.) My general philosophy on it is that if you have a decent idea of what your metabolism was prior to surgery (ideally from tracking your intake over time, rather than those weight based calculators which tell you what it should be rather than what it actually is,) that can be a good guide as to how far you can permit yourself to go calorically over time My weight was stable in the 26-2800 calorie range prior to surgery, and dropped with my weight to where I am now, stable around 2000-2200, so I still had a healthy margin to play with keeping at 1100 to lose. Some whose metabolism started around 16-1800 has a lot less margin to work with and needs to stay somewhat lower, and would seriously struggle at 12-1400 as some programs advise. It's not a one-size-fits-all world.

Aetna New Requirements: What documentation for 12 visits?
JaysWife replied to greenchilegoddess's topic in Insurance & Financing
I started my whole journey in August 2020. I did 12 virtual classes as fast as they could get them out to me. My case was submitted to insurance with all of the required info at the Beginning of Nov. for a tentative Dec. surgery. It came back a week later denied stating that I hadn't completed 6 months of a supervised weight management program and they didn't send 24 months of documented obesity. (I've been obese since I was a very young child) So my nut. added on 4 more months of classes which I finished the first week of Feb. my claim was again submitted with all required info for a March 22 surgery date. I called today to check the status and once again was denied with the same thing being the cause again. I am at a loss of what Aetna wants because my surgeons office says they sent it all. All I know is I am devastated right now. -

Creekimp13 replied to Tim C's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I wouldn't do this in the loss phase....but in maintenance it gets much easier. Honestly, these days I just eat 300-400 calories of whatever I want at fast food places. The other day I had half of an Impossible Whopper and a coffee. Couple weeks ago I had half a fish delux sandwich at Arbys. I really like the Turkey special at Cracker Barrel...bunch of roast turkey, I skip the dressing and biscuits and get carrots and mashed potatoes. Can get two meals out of a lunch portion of this. Big thing for me, is just keeping calories reasonable. I don't eat fast food a lot, but when I do, I make a point to enjoy it and not sweat the macros so much. I DO watch the calories, and make sure to eat a healthier dinner. Losing phase, you really need to restrict the junk more and hit your protien goals. In the losing phase....I sometimes had half an egg McMuffin. The whole sandwich is 310 calories and 17g of protien...it's really not that bad a choice on the run. Wendy's has pretty good salads with low cal dressings and grilled chicken... and you can get a half order. Some of the soups and salads at Panara's aren't bad choices...watch sugar and high calorie dressings. Blackened Chicken Tenders at Popeyes could be a good choice. 170 calories, 26 grams of protien. Very spicy! -
Anyone for October 2020?
Yray replied to barbieater's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
We are almost identical!!! Surgery 10/15 weight in 222 current weight 179.6. I swear I’m loosing inches more than weight! Eating around 700 calories. Feeling great. Only thing I can’t seem to keep down is my Multivitamin. So I’m back on the flint stones. My Hair loss is scaring me! I’ve been pretty active try to do full body workouts 3 times a week and cardio 2 times a week. I feel like my energy levels are really good good right now. Still wake up nauseous pretty much everyday. Started introducing alcohol I thought it would effect me more. Can drink about a beer and a half and it doesn’t do anything to me. The other day we went out to dinner came home and then decided to walk to a pub by the house and had a whole mojito that made me a little dizzy. Dropped from size 16 to a 12 YAY!!!! Noticed I’m not drinking as much water need to make sure I stay on top of that. Low sugar levels!!! It’s happed twice already where my sugar level dropped that does not feel nice, but I know why it was because I skipped breakfast. So just need to make sure I eat even if it’s a protein bar. -
NO pre-op Liquid Diet...Anyone else?
Arabesque replied to JazzyJess20's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
My doctor sent me to a dietician who put me on keto for the two weeks (was actually 2.5 weeks) prior to surgery. But he sent my friend to the hospitals weight loss clinic & she was put on their liquid meal replacement program. Another friend’s surgeon put her on two shakes & one meal (small serve protein & steamed vegetables/undressed salad) per day for four weeks prior. So I guess what I’m saying is every doctor has their own ore surgery requirements, some even have different plans for different patients. You just have to do what they advise. Being more careful about what you eat prior certainly won’t hurt. oh, just noticed this was posted last month. Have you had your surgery and if so how did it go? -
Weight Watchers for 1+ year post-VSG?
CarolC08 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am 16 months post-VSG and not quite to my goal (but surpassed my medical team's goal). I do eat protein first and get 90+ oz of water in a day, but I find that I am grazing more often and not eating on-plan sometimes. I know the "go back to basics" and the typical bariatric responses to keep going on my weight loss, but I'm wondering if anyone has thoughts/experiences/etc. specifically about Weight Watchers (WW+) post-VSG? Good, bad, opinions? -
As I near my 3 month / 90 day surgiversary, I'm reflecting more and more on how we got here on the first place. I feel like a broken record and I'm pretty sure I'm over thinking to avoid facing my true feelings. I have also reached out to a member here and I need to do a better job of keeping us accountable. My first couple months of loss were astronomical and now I've slowed down quite a bit. I find old hungers coming back but I'm also exercising 6 days a week. I'm trying to keep my water and protein intake high and my carb intake low. I figure if I keep my goals simple and work on making newer and healthier habits automatic, I'll be better off in the long run. If i'm going to be honest.... I've always known that the hard work was NOW and that surgery does NOT fix the head. Looking forward to any other words of wisdom out there when it comes to squashing the old sh1tty habits that all got us here in the first place.
