    Lotion & surgery area

At my one week post-op appointment my doc told me it was okay to use scar creams or cocoas butter or things like that. I have been using vitamin E cream every few days and my scars are healing very nicely. I wouldn't woory about what you use too muc nless it irritates it or you hvae open wounds still. Hope that helps.
  2. Hello all! This is a wonderful forum. So many questions answered and others popping up for me. I have Cigna insurance and I am not sure if it will be three or six months of prep but I am willing to jump through the hoops as long as I can see a VSG at the end of the tunnel. I am 57 year old female. I have struggled with anorexia and binge eating, both ends of the spectrum. I have been able to lose weight in the past, but have never been able to keep my weight down. The last five years, what worked for me before is no longer working and I get nowhere. Last year I saw a dietician for four months and lost three pounds and I exercised like a fiend. 90 minutes, five days a week. Three pounds in 16 weeks. It becomes very discouraging. And my company did not cover ANY weight loss services. Last year I hit rock bottom. This year I petitioned the CEO at my company and she immediately agreed that Bariatric surgery is something that a healthcare organization should offer as a benefit to its employees. Starting July 1 this benefit will be added to our coverage. So July 1 I am applying to start the process. Wish me luck! I will be here a lot looking for, and offering, encouragement, validation and support.

    Pain from drinking

I am 9 weeks post op and I still have major stomach spasms. I even take a prescription medicine to try and calm the spasms down, but it never fails whenever I eat anything, I get the spams. I'm definitely going to be talking to my surgeon about this on my next visit. This feeling cannot last forever.

    Hello LGBT friends!

  5. Congratulations, JoJoLYC! I'm a 'newbie' too - I joined the forum 2 years ago, but only now had the courage to book my surgery and start making the changes my body has been so desperately craving. My surgery is December 18th. So I'm just a few weeks ahead of you. Hey - we can keep each other posted on how we're doing! Way to go!

    Help I'm scared

Thank you all David I am on australia so it might be hard I am seeing my GP on Monday to get another dietician It looks like I am sound what you have all been told....except for the time I ate far to much soup! I was worried that the home made soup may not have been classed as a liquid...I suppose it would go up a thick straw! But then others are on Jello which doesn't go up a straw? That is what has me most confused I will be two weeks in Monday so I will try and contact my suregeon again! But it sounds like I'd I wanted to have a couple of mouthfuls of scrambled eggs that would be ok? I have plenty of Protein shakes so I will just stick to those for another few weeks What's done is done with the soup and I'm not sick yet!
  7. So I am 12 days post sleeve I have had a pretty rough time The pain the first week was just awful Things have improved but I still on pain killers occasionally and get some sharp pain when I eat I have had very little instruction or support from my surgical and dietician team I know I am to be on fluids, but the Optifast is so disgusting my mother in law made me some purée Soup, I have only had one small bowl a day 2 days ago I had some cream of chicken soup made with Water and skim milk and I think I ate to much to fast and became very unwell Although I did not vomit I felt like I need to and had to lye down for about half an hour until it passed I have attempted to contact my surgeon but no one ever rings me back I so scared o have damaged my sleeve I seem to be hungry all the time and the hunger pains are painful I still have occasional left shoulder pain...although I think this is muscular and am completely exhausted I have no nause now and no fevers Plus I went back to work 2 days ago I don't know what to do
  8. I was sleeved on December 10, 2012, and I just returned from a 5 day business trip to China during the last week of February 2013. I scheduled my surgery in December hoping that I would be well enough to travel, and I am happy to report that everything went just fine. Here are couple of points that may help future travelers: - Overall, my recovery from the surgery has been trouble free, and I feel that I could have easily made this trip at the end of January. - I was a little nervous about carrying all of my Vitamins and meds (Multivitamin capsules, D3 gels, Biotin, Calcium chews, and Prilosec) through security, but no one even asked about them. - I did not bring any Protein powder, but I did eat 3 or 4 Quest Protein Bars during the trip. - I had no problems getting enough to eat. Most mornings I had an omelet in the hotel for Breakfast, and I had chicken and vegetables for lunch and dinner. I avoided some of the more exotic food choices, but I did try Yak meat for the first time. - All of my colleagues know that I have the sleeve, so they were generally supportive of any special needs such as eating half of a Protein Bar for a mid-afternoon snack. - I did not use this suggestion, but I read in an earlier post that some travelers sent Protein Powder and other food to their hotel by FedEx so that they would not have to carry it through airport security. - I thought that I was over eating during the trip and promised myself that I would get back to my normal eating practices as soon as I got back home. However, I was surprised when I found out that I lost 5 pounds in 5 days. - For exercise during the trip, I walked on a treadmill in the hotel everyday for at least 45 minutes. Good luck to all.

    Wondering About Food Processor?

I have a food processor but I didn't use it much to prepare food for my postop diet . I made Soups but I blitzed those with a hand held blender. For mushies I ate foods that were naturally soft e.g tuna, avo. mashed potato. I think the only thing I used it for was to grate veggies to make veggie lasagne or to add extra veggies to sauces. If you will get a lot of use out of it later on then go ahead and buy one, but if you are only going to use it for 2 weeks of post op diet then it is not worth it and you can easily manage without it.
  10. Amo32112..... more protein?? maybe just a little more vege perhaps to your Soups??i was desperately hungry for three days, im 9 days out, but im not hungry anymore. i found that the more flavour i put into my soups (not necessarily more bulk ) the more i was satisfied. i dont have a sweet tooth but crave savoury. interesting how the extra taste took care of my hunger. i dont feel im missing out anymore.
  11. Going to crow here -- I have never had a stall. Mostly because I stay off the scale. I won't have one in my house (I am compulsive, and if one was in my house, I would weigh every hour). I weigh at the doctor's office, and lately at the gym -- but only every 2 weeks. Keeps me honest, but sane at the same time.
  12. I'm doing the same thing as you. I pretty much weigh every day unless I don't have access to my scale (ie: vacation) and I only record the losses (here and on mfp). I'm also tracking my loss in a graph in excel (I log my weight on the 15th and last day of the month) so I have a visual of the loss. I've lost 48 lbs in 9 weeks (including 3 day pre-op diet) which is an average of 5.3 lbs/week. If I back out the rapid weight loss in the beginning, I'm losing about 3 lbs per week now. That's pretty good (which I need to remind myself since I haven't lost anything in the last week!). Yes, stalls do stress me a bit but I'm trying to take them in stride. I was hoping for more but I'm happy especially considering my diet isn't super strict. I'm around 1000 calories per day and I exercise with a trainer at least 3 days a week but I do eat sugar (the real stuff - no scary chemical sweeteners for me!) and some days my fat intake is a tad high. I'm usually at 60ish grams of Protein per day and around 6 glasses of Water. I could be better but for now, I'm doing what's realistic for me.
  13. Well it took me 7 months to get restriction so I was going in every 3-4 weeks to get a new fill. Now that I am at restriction I have not been there in 4 months. My insurance has changed so I no longer have bariactric coverage. If I was having trouble however I would go in! One of the biggest issues I have seen on this site is people who keep their bands too tight and end up having a slip. My doctor says if you can't eat 3 oz of solid protein and veggies you are too tight. Some people want to be tight so they can't eat pizza or other junk food. This is a bad mentality. Look to the band for help in controlling hunger not as a storm trooper.

    Freaking out!

Oh no, I hope they don't postpone it for you either! I've been so worried about that myself, that would be just my luck..I'm getting sleeved in less then 2 weeks and everyone at my work is coming down with something and I'm so worried I will get sick right before my surgery! Best of luck to you..
  15. OK, odd question! I got banded 8 weeks ago, all going well, and I've got back into kickboxing for exercise. But a good friend has just started a grappling class, and is raving about it. I'd love to take part, but I'm worried about the port - namely if there is 'grinding' contact, can that cause problems? There is a lot of force involved when I grapple with 'the big guys' and I worry about the port getting shifted about a bit So has anyone gone back to wrestling/judo/bjj post op?

    Gained 10 Lbs This Week

I got on the scale this morning and showed a weight gain of 5 lbs from last week. I have not been overeating, but I have eaten foods high in sodium, have not had enough water and ran out of my water pills for my BP a few days ago, so I know it's all water weight. I'm picking up my script tomorrow so I've decided to wait until later in the week for my "real" weigh-in.

    Gained 10 Lbs This Week

Time of the month, Sweets....it makes a lot of us put on and hold on to Water weight before our cycles, and during, sometimes, too. I can easily gain 3 lbs the week before, then my body flushes it all the week I have my period. I agree 100% that there is physically no possible way to gain 10 lbs of FAT in one week after this surgery. I am guessing a moody, picky scale, water weight, and like rootman said, solid waste retention, maybe, too....or all combined! I'll bet you'll be on here in a week saying that 10 is gone, plus two more!!

    Any New Mexico Banders?

Anyone considering this doctor needs to check with the medical board and see what information they have on him. It's not good. We need to be our own advocates and listen to what other banders can say about their own doctors. Be careful. I lived in ABQ until 2006. Moved to Littleton at that time and was lucky enough to be banded by Dr. Kirshenbaum. He, however doesn't take insurance. His self pay cost is $9,950.00 total and that includes everything - plus first three months of fills. He's in Aurora. It's about 450 miles from ABQ. Check out his website www.lapbandrockies.com. He's the best! I know, he saved my life!

    Swelling day 7

Mine was swollen for a couple of weeks. I would just double check with your doctor about your concern. I did not use ice or anything, just tried to avoid hitting that section. Good luck.

    What do need?

Don't stock up on too much of anything, except vitamins. I bought a lot of vitamin B (sublingual), vitamin D (I tend to be deficient), and Biotin whenever CVS had buy 1/get 1 free sales. Your tastes will change drastically following surgery and you don't know what foods you will like or tolerate. For the first week or two I had greek yogurt, cream soups, sugar free pudding, sugar free Popsicles, sugar free jello, broths, and samples of flavored and unflavored protein to mix into them. I'd get two meals out of a yogurt and three or four out of a can of soup. I bought Atkins ready to drink shakes because I had always liked them and it was a quick easy meal in the early days. After I was cleared to drive I was able to go shopping and began looking for and trying different things w/protein that I could tolerate. I found most foods didn't taste 'right' especially in the first month after my surgery. I threw out a lot of food in those early days. Eventually that effect faded away but even one year out I still don't eat enough of any one thing to make 'stocking up' worthwhile except my favorite protein. It took a lot of trial and error to finally find one I liked (I threw out a lot of protein too!). :-)

    anyone consulted a lawyer?

I am presently in the process of finding a lawyer and bringing a suit against the doctor who put in my band. It was done in Mexico, and was not sutured in place, so was slipping around and causing pain and nausea. It had to be removed back here in the states a week after it was put in. Of course my insurance company here won't cover the bills because they were related to a "non-covered" procedure. So including the initial surgery fee, I now have $38,000 of uncovered bills, oh yeah, and no band! Legally, it is more complicated since the surgery was done in Mexico. I will post when I have more concrete information, but right now this is in the preliminary phase.

    unclear on exercising

Wow girl! You are an exercise fool. I thought I was until reading this. It sounds like you are very determined to get the weight off. Good for you. I go to the gym 4 days per week and ride my bicycle most nights after work and on my days off of work. I ride anywhere from 10-30 miles, just depends on how much time I have. You go girl:thumbup:

    Hello from Australia

Hi Chris... best thing ever... banded on 19th August and really loving the freedom that comes from it.... already lost 33 lbs (24 of that on the pre-op optifast diet) so 9 lbs in four weeks yesterday - seem to be over the hurdle of post-op gismo's... If you are sick and tired of being sick and tired as another bandster said... then this is the only way to go.... Cheers and Good Luck... Trish
