  1. Hello my name is jeanell and back in March of 2005 I had RNY surgery in Denver, CO. My doctor was Michael A. Snyder. I lost a total of 110lbs but gradually started gaining 5yrs post op. I started noticing that food was causing digestive issues no matter if it was healthy or not and I was getting no Satiety with food. The symptoms got worse and exercise and diet was not stopping my weight gain. I finally decided to go back to my surgeon 10yrs pot-op and after gaining 60lbs. I found out that I definitely had issues with my stoma being enlarged and that a revision would be necessary. It has been 5 days since my revision surgery and I hope and pray I get back on track. I will definitely make sure that I follow all the rules of the tool and pay attention to my body. I actually had a hernia that required repairing during the revision surgery. My plan is to get as much support as I can because this procedure and journey is very exhausting mentally, emotionally and physically. I am excited that they have apps and forums like this to assist with this journey. I look forward to discussing my journey. Regards, Jeanell
  2. Hi All, My Dr's office submitted my paperwork to my insurance company Blue Shield last Monday. They came back requesting more info pre and post weight/BMI? We finally understood they were asking for my info pre and post lap band. I had it placed in 2006 and removed in 2009/2010. I removed it since it just didn't work and we wanted to start a family. My question is do any of you have any experience with insurance companies denying based upon past failures? I don't feel this should even be an issue for them and not sure why they ate linking into it,so any insight would be great thanks. Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App
  3. The band isn't the greatest thing either, and most surgeons don't do it because of crazy complications like eroding. As for your complications they could get better. I have a friend I didn't even know was sleeved before she told me she lives a normal life eats pizza and more stuff, moderation is what works for her. Idk how far you are, but give it some time, and if your GERD is that bad you can't live with it revise to Bypass. On the other hand I appreciate you giving a different outlook because everyone needs to know what they're up against, but the way you do it doesn't make sense. You try and turn people away as if WLS is sooo horrible which it isn't it's life saving for many, and of course there are complications, and something else you should add if you're going to talk about complications is the percentage of them that happens. I'm sorry that you're going through them, but maybe change your approach to how you do it.

    Starting Over in 2012

i am so sorry to hear this. i just had a revision and i can't imagine what it would be like to have to live with a slipped band. can you appeal the insurance now that you've gained the weight? before my revision i was living on soups and ice cream too. i totally get it. luckily, i only had about 6 weeks of living that way. you really need to push for the surgery. there must be a way to make them see that it IS necessary for your health and well-being! that said, i am impressed at how you are taking the bull by the horns instead of letting it kick you in the rear. i am rooting for you and i'm here if you need support. f
  5. Omg! Just got call yesterday that insurance finally approved lap band to sleeve revision! I'm scheduled 12/15 which is less than 2 weeks. Starting my pre-op diet now & freaking out that I've got so much to do with Christmas coming & so little time.
  6. How soon after revision surgery can you start swallowing pills??
  7. I had my revision 3 days ago, I'm feeling GREAT,no pain at all!! Doctor said I had a some scar tissue but everything went well. I was discharged the next day. So far,so good! Banded-02/02/2012-252 lbs Revision to Sleeve-04/01/2015-213 lbs

    Goal question?

Hi. I am 6'2" tall and massively built. My wrist, with no fat on it at all, is 11 inches around. I have a very long torso. The BMI chart says I should weigh 194 pounds or less. When I was 17 years old, I was only 5'10" and weighed 194 pounds. I was still built like a boy back then, not like a mature man, yet I fit into men's 32X32 slacks. I am 4 inches taller, and much "thicker" than when I was a young man, so I did some soul-searching and decided to revise my goal weight to 225 pounds. Technically, that makes me "Obese" under the BMI guidelines. Oh well, if I hit 225 I think I will have more than achieved my goal.
  9. Hello everyone, I'm 38 years old with a lapband...I've had my lapband since 2009 I've lost 50lbs (I still need to lose another 100+lbs) and have been nothing but miserable since day 1. I've been in the ER twice when the band has suddenly tightened up on me and I haven't even been able to drink water!! It's been so miserable...so I had my husband put me back on his insurance so I could start looking at revision surgery. I'm excited...I just hope I can get insurance to pay for it. Anyone been successful with getting this approved?? Any advice would be much appreciated.

    So sick today!!

Did your surgeon give you a script for reflux? Sometimes even something as simple as allergies and drainage can affect the band because it's thicker than saliva. If you're weak, just keep your fluids up. There's a liquid clear Protein called Isopure that you might try as the weakness maybe not enough protein in your system. The Isopure is 40 grams of protein and fruity flavored. I have a slipped band but I still will not give you any negative feedback...the vomiting isn't the best thing for the band but sometimes unavoidable. I will definitely be more intuned to my band with my revision. I just thought vomiting was part of the game but if it happens a lot that's not normal. But yours sounds like nothing to worry about. Just keep liquids and protein up. Good luck!! Trisha

    RNY to DS revision

Unfortunately my insurance in NJ Direct and I am a teacher in NJ and a state employee. I am limited with my selections. I was grateful that the state at least had one surgeon. My husband has been unemployed on and off and I carry insurance for him. So I am gathering up my operative reports and my recent EGD and will let him evaluate it. I mentioned to him that I used to work at Morristown Memorial Hospital where I had the original surgery and he takes revisions from that hospital. So my guess is that he does the distal on "as needed basis", evaluating each case as it comes. He only does open and there is a preop liquid diet for 2 weeks so I am aware that he wants to shrink the liver and open makes will be easier for him to access organs. DS is major surgery and you need to be committed to a lifetime of Vitamins. Mentally I am just trying to absorb the information that he provided. I have 130 pounds to lose and I feel that DS would get me to my goal weight.

    Starting a second journey; Questions

I am revising band to bypass later on this month. My doctor is not a fan of going band to sleeve because the sleeve is typically positioned over the scar tissue from the band, which has an increased chance of leaking versus him being able to work around the tissue to create the bypass pouch. He also thinks with me having a hormonal co-morbidity that causes weight gain, I can use that extra push of caloric deficiency. That being said, tons of people go band to sleeve with great success! The biggest deterrent I see from the sleeve is if you have any problems with GERD or acid reflux, they often don't suggest the sleeve because it can make those worse causing people to ultimately revise to bypass to help alleviate the reflux. Your doctor can help you make the best informed decision for you, but in the meantime, there's plenty of revision experiences on the board, so I'm sure other people can give you better insight! Good luck!
  13. I tried the band first and am one of those old people almost "50" and have type II diabetes, hypothyroidism, sleep apnea and developed HBP, high cholesterol and GERD after being banded. It just wasn't the right procedure for me and had it removed after 14 months. My 20 yo daughter had RNY a year ago and has dropped 140 lbs and developed a new life. It can be really difficult to find the right surgery to have, there needs to be a better way of figuring it out! I am hoping that with my revision to RNY I too will be successful! My daughter has never had dumping syndrome and some people never do. I think the percentage is 40%. She takes four pills (supplements) a day for life. You're required to have blood work taken at increments to make sure you are not lacking in anything. I have a 40 BMI but many co-morbs and know now that my only chance is the RNY. I wish I could have done it with the lap band just wasn't in the cards! Good luck to you!
  14. My answer to your question is completely different then the others. First I should say I had RNY in 2005 and did fine until 2009 when I started to regain weight. I am now having revision surgery. I work very closely with my nut who specializes in bariatric nutrition and has a focus on Vitamin deficiency. She has taught me that in the last few years research has proven that the Vitamins that we all think of like Centrum, Citracal etc... are not effective for us because we do not absorb them at all, hence we don't get the benefit from them. This makes very good sense since the reason we lose weight in addition to pouch is because of the malabsorption of calories, fats etc... If we don't absorb food nutrients we aren't going to absorb the vitamins. Check out the company Bariatric Advantage. They are the leaders. I understand you are very concerned about the cost and these vitamins are not cheap and you must take vitamins for the rest of your life (the doctors aren't just saying that!) Before meeting my current nut I was taking centrum, citracal, Iron complete from GNC, and sublingal b-12. After getting my blood work it was revealed I have some severe vitamin deficiencies Especially Vit D which has caused some damage that can't be reversed. I don't mean to sound scary or anything. This is just my personal experience and as I have learned throughout the years is that every surgeon has different standards/practices and requirements for their patients. I always believe in following the directions given by your own doctor but please research what they are saying and asked about bariatric specific vitamins.
  15. Thanks guys! I'm more calm now. I'm sure I'll continue to ride the emotional roller coaster between now and the 6th. I just keep reminding myself why I'm doing this. I think I just wasn't expecting to schedule so fast! Insurance was just approved yesterday afternoon! I decided on rny because my BFF just had her band removed today. It made her really sick. Then I thought about the sleeve but I worried about heart burn/acid reflux since I already have it. I didn't want to end up having to do a revision. So I said go big or go home lol. Just talk to your dr. There are people that argue for and against all forms. The hard part is determining what's best for YOU! Good luck! Feel free to contact me anytime. Maybe we can support each other's craziness! Haha!!

    Slow weight loss

Hey, hopefully your stall has broken and you're on you way back down. I have a question for you though. You mentioned that you gained most of the weight back after your pregnancy. I'm just curious how much did you gain and how did you gain it? Were you eating not so great foods (carbs, sweets, etc)? I am really concerned about this because although I'm only 3.5 months post op, I want to have 2 more children once I'm in maintainence. Lol you have made me realize my worst fear. No offence to you but I'm so terrified of gaining the weight after pregnancy. Please if you can elaborate on what happened and how did your weight come back and lead you to a revision I would greatly appreciate it. And good luck getting back on track! 17. I wish there was a "revision" surgery option. I lost the majority of my weight in 2009 after the lap band and kept it off all these years until I had my revision. It sure looks weird to see my weight loss and having sleeve surgery 8 weeks ago.
  18. I lost most of my weight with the band but gained some back when I started having band problems. I weighed 167 the day I had my revision surgery and I weigh 130 now. I basically had no recovery. I was walking around outside the hospital the day after surgery. I had surgery on a Wed. and went back to work on Monday.

    Body rejecting my lapband

My symptoms are constant stomach pain, nausea and just not feeling well. They did a fluoroscope X-ray and everything was as it should look. My abdomen is swollen and bloated all the time. It is to the point that I can no longer eat anything solid without a horrible pain. So until my revision I am sticking to soft mushy foods and protein drinks. My lapband surgeon's aftercare is horrible. He also told me the revision needed to be in 2 surgeries if I was going to try and go through insurance. That was a huge red flag for me. My current surgeon was recommended by my PCP. They use to work together at the same hospital. He is wonderful. So totally different from my lapband surgeon. I feel totally at ease with having my surgery in 2 weeks.

WLS coverage will depend on the terms of your particular policy. I have excellent insurance that covered both my band removal and my sleeve revision. My understanding is that insurance may cover band removal if it can be shown to be medically necessary - that is, causing complications. If your policy includes a single WLS per patient's lifetime clause, it's much harder to appeal insurance denial. A few years ago I served on an ask-the-expert panel at a WLS conference. I sat beside Walter Lindstrom, MD, a surgeon and sleeve patient who recently established a WLS patient advocacy company that can help with an appeal should you need it. Their service isn't free, but it probably costs a lot less than paying for a revision out of your own pocket. Here's a link to the company's website: http://wlsappeals.com/how-we-help/fight-your-wls-insurance-denial/

  22. Tabbie, welcome to our forums! Your story sounds so familiar. I had almost the exact same problems as you. Towards the end though, it was more of not being able to eat anything at all, even with very little fill in my band. I wasn't losing weight either, because I was living on ice cream, it was the only thing I could keep down. If you are able to stick to a healthy eating plan, then another restrictive surgery, aka, the sleeve, would probably work well for you. I revised to the sleeve and the difference is like night and day. I no longer spend just about every waking moment of my life wondering if I am going to be able to eat or not, avoiding social situations in fear of embarassing myself by pb'ing, etc. You don't have to worry about fills and unfills. The sleeve just works. I don't think about it at all. I eat, and when I no longer feel hungry, I stop. That is it. For the most part, I make healthy choices and I do exercise. I am very pleased with my weight loss thus far. Please let us know if you have anymore questions, and what you decide to do.
  23. CAPS FOR SPEED, PUNCTUATION FOR YELLING.... MY FIRST SURGERY WAS A LAP-BAND, IN 2012, BY A DOC WITH A "WHO GIVES A SHIT" SMILE, AND A TON OF DOUBLE TALK ABOUT MY POST-OP INFECTION, AND DISTENTION - WHICH TURNED OUT TO BE A HERNIA, YET TO BE REPAIRED - MY FILL PORT FLIPPED, TWICE - THERE'S NOTHING MORE SOBERING, THAN WATCHING YOUR DOCTOR STICK THAT NEEDLE INTO YOUR ABDOMEN, AND IT BENDS - I WENT FROM 426LBS, TO 350LBS, TO 396LBS - FROM DAY-1, I HAD NO INTAKE RESTRICTION..... 2014, I HAD MY CONSULT FOR BAND REMOVAL, AND THE GASTRIC SLEEVE REVISION; I GOT DOWN TO 350LBS, USING A NUTRIBULLET, AND WALKING - 02/2015, AT 324LBS, I HAD MY SURGERY, GOT DOWN TO 288LBS, AND PLATEAUED - KNEE AND BACK ISSUES HAMPERED EXERCISE, AND "JUSTIFYING" POOR INTAKE CHOICES HAS ME CURRENTLY AT 290LBS.... I'M PAST BEATING MYSELF UP, AND HAVE EMBARKED ON A PATH OF EXERCISE AND PROPER EATING..... STAY TUNED!!!! Sent from my SM-G928V using the BariatricPal App

    As Anyone

I had my 1st RNY in 2004, I had fertility problems conceiving my oldest daughter. So I was VERY surprised when I came up preggers in 2006. It was 2yrs after my initial surgery. I've regained 80lbs and just had a RNY revision to correct the opening from the stoma to intestine. Good Luck conceiving. I believe my Dr suggested to wait at least 18 months after surgery.
