Pregnancy before the one year mark?
gryffen replied to dr3am3rstarz's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah 18 months minimum here in Scotland and any pregnant woman who has had wls is automatically high risk so consultant led. (No waterbirths, midwife led etc) I defo know people who have had lapbands and fallen pregnant under a year in, they had to get fills removed and their band shifted due to the baby. NHS denied them a revision as they went against the protocol and risked it. Fridge Pickers Wear Bigger Knickers [emoji200] -
Anyone else afraid this is temporary?
summerset replied to ryan_86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
... is not a magic bullet. If it was there wouldn't be the need for WLS. Yes, I'm afraid as well that this might be only temporary. However, I did quite well maintaining with the lap band before I got revision so I have hope that I will doing quite well with maintaining after MGB again. -
Warning eat your protein/vitamins!!!!! 8mths post op Gastric bypass
1Day1Life4Now replied to curlysue86's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@curlysue86, I understand exactly what you are talking about. I'm having some difficulties with taking my Vitamins and getting in my Water and Protein. It is definitely hard. I am 3 months post op with my GB and I am struggling. I had the sleeve 3 years ago but because of severe reflux I had to have a revision to GB. I did great with the sleeve and never had any problems so I thought I could breeze right through the GB. Well, not so. The GB is 10 times more difficult. I still can't eat meat and there are only a few vegetables that I can keep down. If it weren't for the Protein shakes and Soup I'd be in trouble. I hate swallowing pills so I have been terrible at taking my vitamins and I can tell a difference in how I feel, and its not good. My skin is so dry... even moisturizer doesn't help that much. I need to drink more water. I've bought some more vitamins and I plan on getting back on a plan so I'll be healthy. The weight is coming off but it's so difficult to eat and there are so many times the meals just don't agree with me and I end up throwing everything up. I never ever did that with the sleeve. Hang in there and we will all get through this . We must remember that this is not a diet... it's a life style. -
Kickstarting weight loss after 2 years of maintenance
Amy* posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi all, I have had a lot of success with my bypass (revision from lap band). I successfully lost 30kg (66lbs) in the first 6 months post op, and I am proud to say I have maintained my loss for the last two years. I am looking to lose the last 10-15kg (22-33lbs) and I am struggling. To be perfectly honest, I feel like I've learned how to 'cheat' the bypass and what foods I can eat to not feel like I'm on a diet, but also not gain weight. I've been doing it for so long now, that any sort of restriction in calories or intake feels like a diet (which I haven't done in so long!) that I'm struggling to stay on track. Is there any advice for someone like me? I don't have a whole lot to lose compared to what I've done already so I want to go slow and steady. Thanks in advance! Amy -
Looking for people who are likely to get surgery in Spring 2017!
Kim Benton replied to boogie_badd8nt_she's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm starting the process with Gastric Sleeve to RNY conversion. If I knew in 2013 what I know now about the sleeve I would have went with RNY to begin with but here I am. Hoping to have my revision in April/May 2017. My insurance requires all the original criteria including 3 mo of nutrition counseling. Anyone else have sleeve to RNY? Would love to have someone to talk to. Thanks. -
Thanks James. I really appreciate the comprehensive list and the support! This is interesting and sounds as though it may be an ulcer and not a hiatal hernia. They want to give me a possible revision to gastric bypass however I'm thinking that maybe I should wait it out to see if the carafate takes care of the ulcer. I read it can take 4-8 for Carafate to heal an ulcer, does that sound right? I hate to rush into surgery if I don't need it and don't want to get a bypass unless it's my only choice.

I had reflux so my surgeon put it this way that I'd hate him for doing the sleeve and I'd be back for a revision to bypass. I had some damage to my esophagus already so the sleeve wouldn't have been a good option. He also said bypass has more research and better long term results. Why did you choose bypass?
O-Town Body Rock replied to jdk524's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You are my sleeve twin! I had the same experience; lost about 90lbs, gained it all back plus GERD. Just met with a surgeon for a revision. I had an upper GI done a few weeks ago so my surgeon wants to see the film before confirming which surgery to do. I have Aetna POS and I am praying they approve the revision. -

dlkumes replied to amyjane79's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had a revision from band to sleeve on January 23rd. First week was awful. A lot of pain from where the port was which my dr said would happen. Almost three weeks out. So happy. Feeling good and down 13 pounds! Good luck to you. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Questions about bypass in Mexico?
RickM replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
Indeed, the sleeve provides more options down the road if necessary, while the bypass's options are limited to minor tweaks within the basic bypass architecture. It can be revised to a DS, but that is a complex procedure that only a half dozen or so surgeons can be trusted to do. One should be as certain as possible going in as to which procedure is the best fit for one's needs. Revisions typically don't work as well as a virgin procedure, so they should certainly be considered a "plan B" if other actions don't work out, but nothing that should be planned on "if I don't like" the first one. I know several who have gone the RNY to DS route and while they are generally doing better with the change, they would have done better still had they gone to the DS originally (most didn't know, or know enough about, the DS when they were sold the bypass in the first place.) Research, research, research. The sleeve can just as readily be revised to a DS as to an RNY but still usually has that performance deficit relative to a virgin procedure. -
My doctors office just called to tell me that my insurance approved my revision surgery to gastric bypass. I'm so happy and extremely nervous at the same time. My surgery is set for March 15th. I can't believe it's finally gonna happen. I've been waiting so long to be rid of this horrible band and feel relief pain wise. Anyone else having surgery in March?? The good, the bad and the ugly.
Travelher replied to alli.wakefield's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I revised to RNY. I had reflux with the band so it was a no brainer to go to RNY. I use Vitamin Patches and so far no issues with vitamin levels. I am not concerned. Dumping is manageable if you are even someone who does get it. I get it if I eat (or drink my Protein shake) too fast (large gulps vs sips...so I don't eat too fast, then I don't get it. Pretty simple. I haven' t tested out sugar (other than a bite of my husband's dessert) and that was fine. If i sat down and ate a whole dessert would I dump? Maybe...probably...i'm not going to try to find out. I did ask my Dr about dumping because that was a concern for me (still wanted to have avocado with sushi etc). he said none of that would be a problem. He described a patient who would eat a bowl of Pasta, wait 15 minutes and then eat another one etc as the type of behavior that would cause dumping. -
Questions about bypass in Mexico?
Berry78 replied to whitneyisfab's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I am also deciding between sleeve and bypass. (Don't want a mini since they aren't common in the US). I'm pretty set on the sleeve because it can be converted later if necessary. The bypass is one and done, but what if it is more than I need? The sleeve has a pretty good weight loss to complication ratio, and I am willing to entertain the notion of a revision later. The RYN bypass is definitely "one and done". I wouldn't entertain a revision later from that. Good luck! -
I've heard it from my surgeon, and many others that a good plastics surgeon will not do a procedure until you're at goal weight and maintaining for a bit. The biggest reason being that you could wind up needing a revision done to what you've already had. This puts more strain on the body and of course costs more. Most insurances do NOT cover plastics as they deem it as cosmetic surgery. So check into that before assuming it does (not saying you are). I honestly heed to this advice. As much as I already want my excess skin gone, I am waiting til I'm at goal (and personally until after I have kids) to get it done because I don't even currently know how I'm going to afford it once, let alone a second time. Plus, I've followed the journey of a few different wls patients who had plastics and while some seem to bounce back quickly, not everyone is that fortunate and it can take weeks and even months of recovery. For me, I use spanx to help. I don't always need them just depending on what I'm wearing, but they come in handy.

Would You Have Weight Loss Surgery Again?
summerset replied to Alex Brecher's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I would definitely doing it again. However, I wouldn't opt for gastric banding again. Back in the days there was only lapband or gastric bypass and nearly nobody would have performed a gastric bypass on a woman my age and weight back then in Germany. It also was hard enough to get approved for lapband insurance wise, let alone gastric bypass or the DS. Most people got gastric banding or vertical gastroplasty then, some had a gastric bypass. I know have MGB because I needed revision because of complications (reflux, migrating band). I don't know if the MGB was the right decision. Maybe a few years down the road I will say that maybe RNY would have been the right choice or the DS to whatever. I'm having problems with gastritis again. Maybe diagnostics will be necessary again. Ah, whatever... Bottomline is though that I would have WLS again . -
What am I doing wrong?
summerset replied to Cinnahs's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
This a 1000 times. It's so important to adjust expectations otherwise you're going to feel like a failure. This is even more important when you're starting at a comparatively low BMI. Someone with a BMI of 55 or 60 will lose weight faster than someone with a BMI of 40 or 35 or less. You'll also lose weight slower if you have lost quite a bit of weight pre-surgery or if you're a revision and already had a substantial EWL in the past. Seriously, people are setting themselves up for depressed mood with these kind of expectations. (I have to remind myself of this as well and need to follow my own advice here, currently stalling since a few weeks.) -
Two surgeries for revision?
Travelher replied to Nrro's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had both done at the same time. My dr said it depends on scar tissue. He's done hundreds of revisions so he can tell by eyeballing it if the scar tissue is too thick to hold staples (then you get leaks). So if too thick my option was sleeve because they can cut around it or come back for a second surgery. Erosion is an automatic 2-procedure situation. I was lucky. He said mine was pretty clean and got rny...my roommate ended up sleeved because he had adhesions etc. -
Two surgeries for revision?
jovi2673 replied to Nrro's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I am having my band out on Monday and revision to bypass at the same time. It sounds like I had similar issues. My surgeon will do bypass at the same time but said he would not do sleeve at the same time. He recommended bypass for me due to having a band and due to history of reflux. -
I had my band removed in august, revised to a sleeve. The sleeve is SO much better and I don't have the pain and vomiting I had with the band. I'm already down to a size 6

found out just before Christmas that I had an ulcer. Had 6 week follow up endo and it's still there, a bad one, and worse than it was 6 weeks ago even on the highest doses anti ulcer meds. Anyone have any experience? I am looking at bypass revision in a week or so. They will make my pouch smaller and remove my left over stomach Help. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Children after the sleeve?
tamara2333 replied to dfluke87's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I have had 2 friends that have had babies post Gastric bypass. They both struggled getting back down to a comfortable weight. One had a revision and is doing better and the other did not. From what I've seen it can be done but you have to be ultra on top of your game once the baby is born. No cheating and probably starting back at post op phase 1
