Hi I've just been searching for this topic as I've recently realised I have just started showing symptoms of Reactive Hyplogylcemia. I'm exactly one year post-op sleeve surgery and I had no idea us sleevers could suffer these symptoms. I'm a vegetarian so trying to cut out carbs has been a huge challenge for me and must admit that recently they have come back into my diet and my weightloss has also stalled. I now find that if I try and exercise in the mornings I have a massive hypo attack, the shakes, sweating, low blood sugar, feel like I'm going to faint, need to sit down and then an urgency to eat something. I then continue to feel terrible for the rest of the day like I'm all washed out and very tired even though I've done almost nothing. This is a very worrying new complication of the sleeve surgery that I did not sign up for and I'm trying to find out as much as possible about the condition so I can learn how to manage it. I'm confused as to whether I need to cut the carbs or increase them? I've been eating about 1,000 calories a day but burning around 2,700 cals per day (I wear a BodyMedia monitor so I know exactly what I'm using). I'm now really worried about this new development.. I'm seeing my surgeon next week for my one year review, I will be asking about this as from what I've researched, it seems as though there are a lot of people post bariatric surgery complaining of the problem and not much can be done from what I know??. Mine so far has been manageable but I am very worried it might get worse and I've read some people having their Pancreases removed which seems very extreme!. Any help or advice would be gratefully received. Prior to surgery I had PCOS, under-active thyroid and had been told years ago that I was insulin resistent but I never had diabetes. I must say, had I known about this complication it would have made me consider very carefully whether I should do this? Please has anyone any advice as it is worrying me a lot??

Follow my Gastric Sleeve journey from Day 1 post op!
dreamscometrue posted a topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Good evening, all! I thought I would take the advice of @@LuminousLife and journal my story for therapeutic reasons. I have chosen to only tell my husband, mom, and 2 best friends (from different states) and I figured since I've been getting support for months here from all of you, I could maybe assist others! I will first give a little bit of my background. I am 27 years old, married with no children (yet)! I am not on any medications, blood pressure and cholesterol, etc are all great... I just need to lose weight! (About 125 lbs to be exact.) I officially started this journey back in August, however had been researching my options for about a year before that. I was sleeved this morning at 9am and my surgeon said everything went perfectly! Honestly, I had been expecting the worst... Gas pains, stomach soreness, not being able to pee, etc... I have had NONE of that. Knock on wood, other than a dry mouth, I feel so blessed to have today go as well as it did. I got to my room at about 11am (I believe) and I felt sick to my stomach for about an hour and kept falling asleep. At about 2pm, I noticed I already felt way better. I've been taking advantage of sleeping when I want (I literally did not sleep all last night bc I got sick from this stupid tofu Soup I ate for lunch. Gross.) I've been using my spirometer when I can and been taking laps around the Bariatric unit every two hours, each time feeling better and better! Any questions/comments are greatly welcomed! -
I agree about the protein bars. I've never heard of these. I don't consume any protein bars, so I'm unfamiliar with them. There's a "10:1 ratio rule" and it is a guide to use to determine if the calorie to protein ratio is bariatric friendly. For every 1 gram of protein, you should have no more than 10 calories. So in the almond butter Perfect Bar there's 320 calories, but only 13 grams of protein. For a food that has 13 grams of protein per serving, to be bariatric friendly it should have no more than 130 calories per serving. Sent from my SM-G991U1 using BariatricPal mobile app

For Anyone Debating To Convert To Sleeve
Jean McMillan replied to msaprildawn's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I know lots of people who had to wait a few months between band removal and revision surgery, usually because their stomaches needed that time to heal. I tried to do band removal and sleeve revision in one operation this spring and my surgeon wasn't able to do the sleeve because she found an esophageal stricture we didn't know I had, so I ended up waiting about 3 more months for my sleeve surgery. My surgeon says that any kind of revision surgery is riskier and more difficult than a first surgery. And unless the patient is himself a bariatric surgeon, I doubt he's qualified to decide whether a one-step or two-step revision is safe. Nothing wrong with telling your surgeon that a one-step revision is your preference, but if your surgeon says no, I think you should take his/her advice. If you don't trust your surgeon to make the right decision for you, why are you letting him/her operate on you? -
I Lived Through This Surgery, My Sister Didn't.

I am so sorry for your loss! I'm wondering what the bariatric surgeon dis that made it so difficult for her to get help? Why didn't they try to convert her to rny or remove her stomach altogether if he couldn't fix it? So many questions... I will keep your family in my prayers -
Flavorless protein powder to add to foods?
BetsyB replied to LindaD's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
Bariatric Eating (BariatricEating.com - BE, Inc. The number one bariatric website for Protein, Vitamins, and success.) has a line of Proteins that is awesome. It's called Inspire, and it includes many really great flavors. They are designed to be added to a small volume (4 oz.) of food or fluid--so it's easier to fit the protein in. My favorite is their unflavored PURE (that's its name) whey protein isolate. I use it so many different ways--in shakes, in Soups, etc. When mixing with something hot, you have to first mix it with a bit of cool Water, then VERY slowly add the hot food/liquid while stirring constantly so that the protein is tempered and does not clump. (This is typical of proteins in general.) I can't recommend the stuff highly enough. It's light years better than the GNC stuff, IMO. -

I have a feeling that this "advice thing" is becoming a pet peeve of mine. Who exactly decides what is "wrong" or "right" advice anyway? As far I can see there simply is a whole truckload of conflicting advice/rules out there because there is no real standard available on diet, pre-/post-op regimen etc. Simply compare the rules/advice your own surgical team gave you with any other member who got surgery at a different hospital and you will notice that at least some rules will contradict each other. So talking about "giving wrong advice" is IMO very difficult because in the end who exactly decides what is wrong and what is right? It doesn't fit our own view of the bariatric world so it must be wrong? Can't be that simple, or can it? Let me clarify what i meant... Advice as in solid concrete advice backed by medical data/known knowledge.... not someones interpretation of what should be done because of their personal opinion... Eg.... eating solids 3 days out, overdosing on Vitamins that cause physical harm, or doing something against their surgeons instructions etc There is very big differences in plans... and everyone should stick to it.. if they have a question, medical advice should be sought from their practitioner not some random person on a forum. (You can supplement advice given here, but confirm with your practitioner if its okay) Eg. We were allowed purees as soon as we were discharged from hospital, but i would never tell anyone to stray from their own plan, even when i know it was safe for me to do so. I have done this in the past... i always take the advice given and confirm with my surgeon that its okay.... Unfortunately some people nievely take all advice as truth and that can be a problem with so many varying opinions.. its just plain dangerous to do so. -
They had wanted everyone to pick up their records before she left (back in October). I'm not sure what the process would be now that the office is actually closed. There might be a way to contact her via the old website (Michigan Bariatrics Surgery Center of Excellence P.C Lap-Band). Good luck!

I am a claims RN who works for Anthem. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up about a couple of things: Anthem does not determine whether or not they will pay for the surgery. It depends on whether or not your employer or your spouses employer purchased the weight loss surgery rider. Although you are correct in that there iare general medical necessity guidelines that Anthem follows concerning bariatric surgery ,first your policy must have the rider. If you or your spouses company did not purchase the rider, then you will receive a contractual denial since it's not a benefit that you have :ranger: Talyn

Anybody in South Jersey
bbjerseygirl replied to Cpudoc6's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I didn't use Dr. Goldstein because I had already chosen a doctor, who actually was very good but he is a general surgeon and doesn't have all the support stuff afterwards. I hear great things about Dr. Goldstein. His office is in Voorhees, but does surgery in Virtua, Marlton - not too far from you. Also a Dr. Patel in AC has a great reputation. I know a few from him and they all love him. My doc is Dr. Manigat in Voorhees and he did an excellent job, but like I said, he doesn't just do bariatric surgerys so if you want all the glitz and glam from a center, I wouldn't use him. But he did great for me. Good Luck -
Hello, I am so glad I found this forum. I am looking into being banded October 27, 2008. I have been in contact with Patti Lissberger of The Bariatric Group in Dallas Texas, can any of you tell me any concerns or great success you had with this group?

Scared I won't qualify!
Frustr8 replied to jennifer47's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
And it may sound sneaky but I have known of cases that are billed as Hiatal Hernia repair instead of bariatric surgery especially if you have one of the insurance plans reluctant to cover VSG or RNY, and sad to say even in this enlightened age, there are insurance providers that think Bariatrics are only "Vanity Surgeries". Wish they could walk in my moccasins, they would quickly see the error of their ways! Oh I was fortunate that Medicare/Medicaid only asked for need and a BMI over 40, I sure didn't need the co-morb I already had, my presurgery BMI at first consultation was nearly 52. And not to be rotten about it, my current one is 31.1 9 months out. So your could say my life turned around JUST in Time, now at edge of mere overweight, instead of obesity and morbid obesity. 👍🌸😝🌺, as small or smaller than I was in 1967 when I got married. Hello I am 23yrs old. I am a patient in the bariatric program and have been going through this process for little over a year now. My highest weight was 497, I was scared that I would hit 500. Having that fear I decided to start committing more and put the effort in. It's been a couple months of progress, but I am down to 440. I met the requirements and was finally approved for my surgery. I know I've been wanting this surgery for a long time so I can have a more comfortable life. Knowing that its actually coming up I have had some concerns/fears. First I have never had surgery, so I am scared to go under. I know it's a fast surgery and recovery doesnt seem that long, but still going under for first time is frightening. Then my main fear is loose skin. I know a lot of things contribute to the amount of loose skin and then ways of preventing, but I know at my size I will lose a good amount of weight. I am scared that I will have such excessive loose skin. I know I can do a skin removal surgery, but again I never had surgery. I want to lose the weight, but don't want to see myself with the loose skin. I know my goal weight is 250. I dont know If that makes a difference for it, but yeah. I just now keep looking up ways to prevent all the time. It is really scaring me.

I'm super happy to hear that the unflavored has no resemblance to the rtd. I still have a few Isopure rtd that I'm saving for after surgery when/if I have issues reaching my Protein goals. They taste horrible, but good lord they have a load of protein. At the moment I'm loving Syntrax Nectars. Premier rtd banana is an everyday use for me, I'm hoping I can still stand it post surgery. I've been debating about picking up some Unjury chicken vs Bariatric fusion chicken. Maybe I'll get both. I'm in my 2 week pre-op diet and warm liquids make me feel like I'm not starving. Diet Changes After Nutritionist
Creekimp13 replied to Jerseygirl4523's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was very lucky to have a nutritionist who was used to serving a diverse populations of people with very different nutritional preferences and cultural diets. (Kosher, Halal, Vegan, Vegetarian, Etc.) She asked me what my favorite diet was....I said Mayo Clinic/Mediterranean....and we looked at some key factors of the diet and made a few adjustments to prepare for bariatric surgery, but mostly I was able to stick to my preferred plan....and even praised for it. (I do hit a higher protein goal than I was used to, but I do half of it in plant protein) I also reduced my carb side dishes to 1/4 cup instead of 1/2 cup. If it's a Vegan main dish, that's different....but a side of rice or potatoes with a protien is a much smaller portion now....and often omitted. I'm discouraged when I hear about dietitians who only offer one approach and doctors who believe Keto is the only way to go. It works very well...but it doesn't work for everyone. I think patients are more compliant with plans they are comfortable with, and can maintain for a lifetime. Glad to be working with a group that offers more than one way up that mountain! Jersey, I'm a big fan of apples with natural peanut butter, too Had some for a snack tonight. LOL...I understand chicken fatigue! Maybe try to switch things up with fish or turkey? Congrats on your 14 pound loss! -
Can fills and unfills cause band slippage? I'm concerned that I may have slippage and can't get to my surgeon for a few days yet. My symptoms are not as severe as most I've read, though. I'd be interested in hearing more about symptoms, corrections and recovery times. The history (if you're interested): I was filled to 2cc's for 4 months with only a little restriction and went to a local NP for a fill. He's assistant to a local bariatric surgeon and sounded like he knew what he was doing. He gave me a 1cc fill. It was WAY too tight, so we unfilled the next day to 2.5cc. I could eat that evening, but the next AM I could hardly get Water down. I thought maybe it was swelling and waited a few days. Dehydration sent me back, and the NP completely unfilled me and prescribed Prednesone for the swelling. A week later we put back 2.1cc's. Again, I could eat thick liquids that day and drink anything. The next AM, same story. Again, waited a couple of days for swelling to go down, but no go. Back again for an unfill down to 1.75cc's. Kept to liquids for almost 3 days, then tried thick liquids (cream Soup, yogurt) and vomiting occurred (though not retching). Now, in the morning I have trouble getting even liquids down sometimes. Other times I can eat yogurt. At times (though rarely, and usually in the evening) I can eat softer foods and even crackers, but most of the time I can't eat anything.... That's where I'm at. I can't get to my surgeon until next week.

Whats Wrong With Me?/
Katie713 replied to newgrandmother's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you. I consider myself a slow loser, but I guess I am the tortise and not the hare! I don't care, I still have a ways to go...just six months out, this isn't a race and I am pleased with my skin, sometimes if you lose too fast, you have major loose skin issues...I do have some, but I am pleased that in some places, it is getting better and not worse, like my thighs. I have lost about 60% of my excess weight, so I am in line with what my bariatric doctor said is considered a good success rate for the 6 month mark. I am on a very restrictive low carb diet right now and it is making me a little cranky today though!! Not cheating though...just craving -
136lbs in 8 months and this loose skin is starting to suck
penman53 replied to dandeegan's topic in The Guys’ Room
I'm not the young studs like you guys are i'm 61 in September but I never in a million years thought that the excess skin would look like this. I think I look terrible without cloths on. But there is no way in the world I will invest the kind of money you have to do to get rid of it. My good friend across the street from me works for a surgeon who specializes in bariatric skin removal procedures. Maybe I can get her to throw me a bone huh? -
i am in nj. medicare covers bariatric procedures but what you have is medicaid...and yes they cover them too. i have horizon nj health as well and i had my surgery on november 17th with Dr. Jordan Garrison. awesome doctor and awesome experience. you have to choose a doctor on the health plan that covers bariatric surgeries and go from there. if you are in northern nj i seriously suggest my doctor, Dr. Garrison. i wish you luck in your journey--you can do it!

Adding calories is super easy even with a lot of restriction. Go for things with high fats like nuts, and sugars, like raisins. For someone with a condition bordering on being underweight you can probably even go get a GOoey high end organic treat from Whole Foods and get 500 cal just from that. If you had a need for the surgery at one time, then you know how to put weight back on. I would also consider doing everything I can to increase my nutritional intake-less focus on calories and more focus on organic vegetables and fruits. Just intuition based notions I have. It's amazing to me that anyone who is overweight enough to need bariatric surgery can actually get too thin. This is definitely not been an issue for me, and I can't imagine what you must be going through from one extreme to the other. You can do this! Just ask your body what she needs. Nutritional tracker/calculator App?
GrrlAnn replied to BDutchess's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I LOVE Baritastic! It's a tracking app specifically for bariatric patients and it's the best tracking app I've ever used! It's tracks everything - food, water, exercise, steps, measurements, weight, bmi. There are even timers to remind you to drink or to wait to start drinking. Even inspirational quotes. It's the best!! Sent from my XT1585 using BariatricPal mobile app -
Sleeve101, I just read all your posts and learned: * Pre-op, you were anemic (low red blood cell count), and your Mexican surgeon almost didn't do your surgery, but relented and did it anyway. * You may not be measuring or tracking your food (although not sure about that). * You have had a tough time emotionally post-op, but haven't yet sought medical or counseling support for your distress. * You have federal BCBS insurance, which has pretty good insurance coverage. I strongly encourage you to find a counselor or therapist who's familiar with bariatric patients' issues and journeys who will support you through this tough time you're having. As you know you can't get your original stomach back. So it's time to learn how you can move forward with this new lifestyle. Many, many people have done very well post-op. You can, too. You don't have to remain miserable. It's your choice.

In FW - Best way to get a loan if you are self-pay..
Iulizbug replied to dallasgal's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
There is nothing scary about going to Mexico as long as you pick out an excellent surgeon. I was banded by Ortiz and have nothing but wonderful things to say about him but Rumbaut and Kuri are also very good too. As far as your aftercare each of those surgeons bariatric coordinator should be able to give you a list of docs in the US who will take you as a patient for fills. Or you could contact Inamed and they will help you. That is key to being banded in Mexico though, make sure you already have that straightened out before you go. *(Unless you live in Cali or close to Mexico where you can drive there). I don't know of any docs in the States for as cheap as 8K but I have heard the Wish Center doing it for 10k. I have also heard good things about Capital One for financing for surgery from others. I got a 0% credit card and put my expenses on that. $8500 was the total for Ortiz and it was worth every penny. Good luck on your upcoming surgery! ~Liz~ 03/10/06 241/167/160 5'7'' -

Star Jones....leaving "the view"
chameleon replied to piercedqt78's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I never cared one way or the other for her, because I don't like the"view" to begin with and she was just the token fat black woman...they killed three affirmitive action birds with one stone by having her on the show! And they tried to manufacture her into a star. No doubt in the world that she had some form of bariatric to acheive her weight loss, but who gives a crap...and why should it be anyones business....least of all Rosie o' (mac) donnel...I mean really talk about the pot calling the kettle black! If they think star is tacky wait'll they get a load of rosie trying to be real. One other comment...My sister bought that book that star wrote and I agonizingly managed to drag myself through 75% of it before the nausea became to much to bear. That book is the biggest load of ---- I have ever had the misfortune of wasting my eyesight on! I mean think of all the perfectly good trees that were wasted! It takes women back 100 years..please "I don't let my man see me without makeup ever...that's what you gotta do to keep a man" o my goddddddd! What a bimbo! Star I admire you for your weight loss, but girlfriend ya got the wrong idea about most everything in life.
