Just wondering if anyone from NC
Frustr8 replied to Lena809's topic in Duodenal Switch Surgery Forum
Seems North Caolina is a hotbed for DS on Bariatric Pal, do you just have an disproportionate of surgeons doing them? -
Come to think of it so does my bariatric clinic, intimidated me at first, you see I spent years being weighed and found wanting, yeah it sounds biblical but I don't mean it,exactly like that. You I ow I would try and try, make my paltry losses and there would be an undertone I hated " You know you could do better. You just don't try hard enough!" And,i was always trying level best hard as I can.! And like the Biblical King, I was not good enough for what God planned. Now post surgery it is :-,finally,my fist bump time, and that is pleasing.. Some thing,i do fear, and maybe I should not verbalize it,but I shall. I understand the rational of an anorexic, the sense of power as pounds melt, away rapidly, it is finally like you Can Have Finally Control, it is a thin thin line between health and sick applications here and I feel teetering,on the knife edge. You know I did watch this show a lot of furst, same sick fascination many, people have at an traffic accident, just cannot help watching, even though the. pain , wounds are so evident. Now, Tomkitten still likes watching, I will not turn to TLC willingly. It just doesn't feel, right to me anymore.

PSA!! Do yourself a favor and buy the Bariatric Advantage vitamin chews and calcium chews. Life changing vitamin experience. They are almost a starburst. I was struggling with everything about my current vitamins. Make sure you can have them at what stage you are on food wise. You can order through their website. Today I had my 6 week post op appointment and was cleared for all foods except beef and raw veggies!! A good day!

Iโve been watching the show for a long time as well and I really didnโt always believe everything was real, but after joining this app/forum I have read so many of the same traits...the struggle is just real...my heart goes out to most of them, some on the show are just stubborn, set in their ways and donโt want help. Now the Asanti family wow...serious issues beyond. Smh I love Dr. Naw ๐๐ฝ tough love Btw: it was funny because when I went to my first Bariatric appt with my team and they had the same scale with the handles, it reminded me of Dr. Naws office lol

Roux-En-Y Gastric Bypass ADELAIDE AUSTRALIA anyone here from Australia
Hop_Scotch replied to New&Improved's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Hi Mikeyy and welcome to BP I am in Tassie, but not a RNYer. Take some time to read through the bypass subforum here and you will probably find the answers to questions and even unasked as yet questions. There a few Australians about here but if you are on FB, I could send you a link to an Australian based bariatric group which is fairly active. If you are concerned about FB privacy and friends, you could set up an alias profile. Let me know if you would like the like. -
Post OP- Difficulties getting in liquids
Swanton_Bomb replied to SleevedBelle25's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm struggling a lot with this. My NUT told me that Crystal Light or water with added electrolytes seems to settle better in the stomach for a lot of people. I was skeptical because Crystal Light is so acidic (and I don't particularly like it either, I prefer plain water these days) but I tried it today and while I am still having issues I have definitely been able to drink more today. I had good luck with Bariatric protein cocoa last night, win-win, protein+fluid, far too sweet but not as gross as the shakes. -
Can I still eat Keto/LCHF after RNY or sleeve?
CrankyMagpie replied to ๐ บ๐ ธ๐ ผ๐ ผ๐ ธ๐ ด๐ บ's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
You can definitely do keto, but it might not be especially high fat for a while--most bariatric nutritionists seem to favor a low-fat, low-carb diet for new patients. And very few people get through the first few weeks without something artificial. (I relied on sugar-free jello, sugar-free popsicles, and SO MANY PROTEIN SHAKES.) If you're really dedicated, though, you could probably minimize most of that. For instance, Eggface suggests "double milk" (1 cup Milk mixed with 1/3 cup Nonfat Dry Milk Powder = 16 grams of protein per 8 oz. serving) as one option. Most plans won't force you to eat beans or fruit or high-carb veggies, though; the focus is very much on protein sources, mostly animal-based ones. If you're worried about dumping from high-fat keto, you might consider discussing the option of the sleeve instead of the bypass with your surgical team. (There are people with sleeves who experience dumping, but it's pretty rare.) But like Matt said, not everyone who goes bypass has a dumping problem from fat, either. -
Looking for other Anthem Blue Cross PPO experiences.
๐ บ๐ ธ๐ ผ๐ ผ๐ ธ๐ ด๐ บ posted a topic in Insurance & Financing
My company was bought and our insurance will change to Anthem Blue Cross in January. The plan is called Prudent Buyer. My new employer is California based however I live in Texas. We havenโt enrolled in our selected plans yet however my HR person gave me the EOC for this year explaining all the coverage and stated nothing will change. Bariatric is covered and the only stipulation is that it must be deemed medically necessary and performed at a BDCSC facility. There are absolutely no other requirements listed like wait times, nutrition visits, etc. Anyone else have experience with this plan? -

Vegas? Was it Blossom? They're good, but they're a high volume bariatric farm; the "love 'em and leave 'em" school. If you want them to take responsibility and help, you're gonna have to get pushy\aggressive. i.e. Threaten to blast their name all over the bariatric forums and Yelp. maybe even get a lawyer involved. Unless you make noise, they will not help you, which is BS. Whatever is going on with you, it;'s not normal. They need to step-up and help you through it. -
My doctor's office specifically recommended that I take a vitamin for bariatric patients. I have had no issues swallowing, so I take the capsule form. I believe it's the Bariatric Advantage Multi.

flatus, my days of foetus, Praise God, LONG OVER! Oh for an editing ability on Bariatric Pal, be5a app doesn't have it! -
Hey there fellow bariatric pals. I am looking for advice or anyone with similar experience. I have GS March 2014 with top weight of 250 at 5'6" BMI 41. I lost about 55 lbs which my lowest weight has never exceeded about 185. (Goal weight about 165) So, at this time, I have gained back some weight and am at 200 lbs. So about 15 lbs back again. My doctor recommended perhaps having the Duodenal Switch/Revision to continue to take more weight off. But, I really only need to lose about 30-35 lbs. I am afraid that I will get under 160 lbs and be too thin. Has anyone had the DS after the sleeve? Still researching and trying to make the best decision. Thanks to all for your time to read and comment. NY1966

This is the continued work with bariatrics. Recognising and confronting old behaviors. Finding strategies to get back into weight loss mode. Great advice from the above posts. Snacking: keep healthy options on hand get rid of temptations Eating larger meals at night: Larger meals can still stay within your calories for the day. With your protein, load up on salad, steamed or roasted veggies. The office and food holidays: Many people will appreciate healthy options. (I'm sure there are others watching their weight) Veggie and fruit tray, meat and cheese platter, Hummus dip, Spicy edamame, Salt n vinegar cucumber slices, Chicken or turkey meatballs. deviled eggs. My favorite is my dieticians white chilli. My dietitians bariatric site for some inspiration: http://insidekarenskitchen.com/bariatric-friendly-recipes/ -
I was sleeved 7/4/17, so I am a little over a year out. I was sleeved in Mx, so I haven't seen my bariatric team since my surgery (as far as post op checkups, etc.) . My weight loss has slowed down quite a bit and I have been between 173-178 for the past few months (30 years old, 5'8 and trying my best to exercise 3-5 times a week). I was hoping that some people who were about a year out could tell me how they are doing and what their approx. macros are. I have been trying to follow bariatric keto for a few months...but it really doesn't seem to be a good fit for me. I had the ketone strips and joined a special "bariatric keto" group on Facebook and they provided me with macros, but according to the strips I never got into ketosis Any advice or support would be greatly appreciated. I know I have come so far and made great progress, but I would like to continue this journey and get to a "normal" BMI before adding on to our family. Currently, I'm eating anywhere between 1,000 - 1,200 calories a day. Protein : 60-80 g Carbs: 0-50g (total, not net) Most days typically under 25g Fat: 25-65g Water: 80-100oz

One Year Out: Support, Motivation, and Tough Love

My doc uses a really good metric to keep me sane. He says that on average, bariatric patients can be expected to lose 50% of their excess weight. So based on what you've written, you were 310 and I'm guessing your BMI baseline would've been around 160(ish). So that's 150 lbs you would lose to go from pre-op to BMI-chart-approved, 50% of that is 75lbs. You've already lost almost 100lbs. That's not to say you shouldn't shoot for a goal weight 40lbs below what you are now - it's just a marker to keep in mind when thinking of failure or success. And based on the "50% of excess weight lost is the average" metric, you're ahead of the average. So don't beat yourself up. -
Any Dramatic Career Changes Post-Op?
JessaK replied to linlew's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Yes, I have experienced this twice. I seem to go through big changes in my life when I go through big physical changes. I previously had a lap band that took 6 years for me to start losing weight with. Once I did, my marriage fell apart. My marriage that I thought was super strong, to my high school sweetheart. Once my weight got down and I was maintaining it, I upgraded my job. I have always been in sales based interior design but now I was seeking and getting multiple job offers for a lot higher paying jobs with better benefits. I even got a promotion to manage my own design firm within 3 months of working for the company. Next was my tummy tuck and through that process I decided that I was tired of working for others and missing out on things in my kids lives. So I decided to open up my own business and work from home by the time I was done with my FMLA leave. My band failed & had to be removed and I gained back most of my weight. I just had the sleeve and although I donโt want to change my job bc the lifestyle it affords me is too good to pass up, I just donโt have a ton of interest in it right now. I am consumed by all things bariatric surgery. Iโm not sure that helps you but short answer, yes. -
Vitamins & water intake
johnsons13 replied to ZionGirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm 7 months post op and my dr doesn't want me swallowing any pill unless it's Bariatric formulate vitamins. However, I can't stand the taste of multi's and I've tried chewables and flavored ones. I do like the Bari Life powdered formula you can mix with water. There's no after taste. But like matt said, you will eventually be able to swallow water without sips. It takes me no time to finish my first cup of coffee in the mornings and then I sip to enjoy it but also drink plenty of water. Sipping in the beginning helps you from overdoing it and making yourself sick. -
Anyone get bypass surgery for gerd?
CyclicalLoser replied to atomicbeing's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had terrible Gerd, then I got the lap band. All of the gerd went away (Or so I thought). I woke up in the morning spending the first couple hours clearing my throat. The surgeon told me it was probably "silent GERD". Right after my revision surgery from the band to the RNY, the throat clearing was fixed. I have a family member who was thinking about having bariatric surgery. They have GERD really bad, and the surgeon also recommended the RNY. He said that the sleeve is a high pressure setup which has a tendency to push up stomach acid. This is coming from a surgeon who does mostly sleeves, so I wouldn't say he was biased against sleeves in general. -
I was working on an appeal and came across the 2017 Kaiser WA Bariatric Surgery program booklet. I don't know if there is an updated book for 2018 (or soon 2019), but I figured it would not hurt to provide the link in case anyone wants to download the PDF. It is: KP Washington 2017 Guide for the Bariatric Surgery Program

ย BIG NEWS! Several insurers are REMOVING supervised diet requirements
๐ บ๐ ธ๐ ผ๐ ผ๐ ธ๐ ด๐ บ replied to Walter Lindstrom's topic in Insurance & Financing
OMG! My new insurance plan starting in Jan 2019 is Anthem Blue Cross Texas. I know bariatric is covered in my policy and there was literally nothing else mentioned for requirements in the EOC aside the surgery needing to be medically necessary and performed at a BDCSC facility. This is awesome news!!! Thanks for sharing! -
I went to a bariatric specific hospital so my insurance advocate had it on her calendar to request my records from my PCP the day after my last appointment. She submitted it that day and she called me 2 days later with the approval. From there it took 2 buisiness days to get scheduled. My surgery ways 10 days from scheduling. Iโm pretty sure my experience is best case senario. I would just make sure to be your own advocate and follow up and make sure records are getting where they need to go.

Had my one month (really, a day short of 6 weeks) post-op appointment today. Everybody seemed pretty happy with how things are going, and I'm now officially in Phase III (long-term bariatric eating phase), with the caveat that rice and pasta are still not allowed, and no alcohol until at least the three month mark. (Not a problem.) But I'm cleared to have fruits and veggies! ๐ฅฆ๐๐ฅ๐๐๐ So exciting! I want an apple so badly. (OK, like, a third of an apple, with peanut butter, because I'm not sure a full apple will fit in my stomach, and eating something without any protein feels wrong.)
I'm also cleared to exercise, though I've been advised to start slow with weights and to stop if I feel any "tearing" (๐จ) in my abdomen. Back to the pool with me! (I hurt my foot, so walking is out right now. I hate it. Swimming and starting with weight lifting should do a lot for my mood, though.) -
Yeah you know what we were feuding about. He said to me " I won't tell them any different, but don't you really think you ought give up bariatric surgery because of your age? No I don't, I have worked too hard toward it.

No Pain Medications
Orchids&Dragons replied to Orchids&Dragons's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
I agree that the nurse shouldn't share personal information. However, I was in a large hospital and do not know to which patient she was referring. However, this doctor performs surgery regularly at this hospital, and it is (according to the nurse) his standard procedure to use no pain meds stronger than Tylenol. I do know of at least one other surgeon in this area who does the same. I was told by a Co-worker who was his bariatric patient , but that was about 5 years ago.
