  1. Unless they have to open you up to do the bypass your recovery for it shouldn't be much different than it would be for the sleeve.. Also I've noticed quite a few people end up having a revision from sleeve to bypass.. So that might be something you can bring up to your parents.. And yes.. The decision should be made between you and your doctor.. Good luck with your surgery!
  2. Just be careful. I took the omeprazole and still got an ulcer. I am looking at bypass revision 3.5 months post op Monday because the ulcer won't heal. It is a serious issue that they are prescribing the PPI for.
  3. Hi everyone so I just got my approval letter for a revision I only lost 20lbs with the sleeve I am so nervous I hope this next surgery works out for me anyone had the same experience ?

    Any Florida sleevers?

Hi guys! I am in East Orlando and I had my surgery with Dr. Teixeira in March 2015, I'm having an endoscopic suturing revision done with him on March 1 to combat some weight gain from a stretched sleeve (my fault [emoji21]) I highly recommend Dr Teixeira and would love to get to know some local sleevers for support this time for sure, as I think it may have impacted my success to try and go it alone last time! 6. I have a doctor in mine This is a revision surgery I have a sleeve I want to get gastric bypass
  7. Hello All, I have the date for my gastric bypass surgery on March 22, 2017. Still waiting though to hear from insurance, but that's why it was a good idea that the pre-approval documents were sent out in advance. Anyways, my parents are bugging me about the fact that they think I should go for the Gastric Sleeve instead of the Gastric Bypass. They tell me nothing new out of what I read, and I've read a lot.........a hell lot of material, kinda like reading War and Peace, but on Bariatric Surgery. I am fully aware of the complications from the Gastric Sleeve vs. the Gastric Bypass. However there is one reason I am interested in the Gastric Bypass OVER the Gastric Sleeve. A lot of doctors don't like to mention this that often, BUT, THERE IS A CONTINGENCY PLAN with Gastric Bypass. God forbid something goes wrong, it CAN be reversed completely. Yes, it is a very complex revision procedure, especially due to the Gastrointestinal Tract, but it CAN BE DONE! However the Gastric Sleeve cannot be reversed like the Gastric Bypass can. The only thing a bariatric revision doctor can do with the Gastric Sleeve is revise it to the Bypass or something else, but still the portion of the stomach that you lost from the sleeve is gone forever. At least with the Gastric Bypass, the portion of the stomach not used doesn't atrophy. And also, I really am opposed to the idea of 80% of an organ being completely removed from the body. However, if I had to, I would do the Sleeve. Next, I would like to discuss some of the negative side effects from Gastric Bypass. I understand sometimes people vomit, like in any of the Bariatric Procedures, not just Bypass, BUT I cannot stand to hear that there are some people who vomit every single day. I completely understand as a post-op bariatric patient that vomiting is different from the average "Joe" who vomits because after Bariatric Surgery, there is no vomiting of the acid juices, which usually makes it painful in a normal person, and makes it harmful for that person's teeth. However, I hate to hear one person tell me that even if you follow the nutritional guidelines to a tee, you are still going to vomit everyday. THAT CAN'T BE NORMAL. In fact I find that aspect offensive. It's like asking then what the hell was the point of the surgery to begin with? Therefore, disregarding ALL food items that cause the dumping syndrome, I would like to think that I can, after month 3 or month 4, eventually eat fish, and chicken, and occasionally "once in a blue moon" red meat. But sometimes when I hear a person's disgusting problems with food, I'd like to think that there is some sort of NUTRIONAL RULE or EATING BEHAVIOR that he or she is not following. Last but not least, before going into this Gastric Bypass procedure, I am currently 29 years old, 5 foot 7 inches, 364 pounds, and my only health issues going into this are Obstructive sleep Apnea, ADHD, and Major Depressive Disorder (IN FULL REMISSION), with a very healthy Hemoglobin A1C of 5.3. Please note, I have never ever been in the pre-diabetes stage with my Hemoglobin A1C. However, despite a full understanding of how much my parents love me, they are harassing me about my decision to go with the Bypass and would rather I go for the Sleeve. They are also doing this, because Post-Op Recovery-wise, they are my support system until I get better on my own. Both my parents work full time. My father is an insurance attorney and my mother is a pediatrician, and I completely understand that one of them is going to have to sign that Family Medical Leave Act form. Despite all that, I don't think they should be the ones to persuade me to change my mind over a procedure. That opinion should only come from my surgeon. Right? It's my body. Thanks, Gabriel

    Band to VSG or Bypass

Yours is the post I was looking for bear hugs...I had a band 2007 the band revision 2014 the gastric sleeve august 2016. I have lost no weight with it at all and the worst reflux ever..I am really thinking about the bypass but wonder if my stomach has been through enough already. Wondering why you are revising? Sent from my SM-N920I using the BariatricPal App
  10. Would you mind sharing with me what your complications were? I ask because Saturday I had a mini stuck episode with my band. It's felt tender ever since. I'm not eating much due to lack of appetite but I am eating just fine when I do eat. I'm curious what I need to look out for. I'm looking to have the revision surgery this summer. I'm very nervous of the potential complications though.
  11. I am still in the beginning phase. My consultation is on Feb 24 but I have done lots of researching. More so on the gastric bypass and some sleeve research. I suffer from gastritis and have been scoped many times. My ENT tells me that in my case gastric bypass will be better for me because I currently suffer from gastritis and heartburn . I also run low in Iron but my primary doctor says it wasnt alarming enough for her to say when I do have surgery that I had to choose the sleeve or that the sleeve was the best choice. I also have a problem with maintaining my electrolytes. With the bypass I would have be on top of this along with the common deficiencies that may occur. So, far two of my doctors believe I will stay on top of it. Its very important to get your blood monitored. I have been on you tube viewing videos of people who decided on doing the bypass instead of the sleeve because they already were dealing with gastritis. I have viewed videos of those who have gastritis before the sleeve and had no problems after the surgery and or mediciation helped it so much that it wasnt a problem . So it seems like a wait and see. I read that some doctors have done revision on some sleeve patients when the gastritis got too bad that medication didnt help and it was so bad they could not eat so it had to be revised. It just depends. You may not have a problem and that could be the case. No one can predict if gastritis will be a big or small problem after a sleeve. I would just continue to do more research to prepare yourself and be informed of all of the possibilities. I am still researching on the bypass and when I come across information on the sleeve I read that too. I want the bypass but I still keep research open to what the sleeve offers too. So every surgery has its pro and cons. Either way get all the information you can get so you can feel confident in your choice. The research continues for me.

I hope so! Waiting to hear back for approval for revision from band. If I get denied I'm going to have a melt down [emoji853]. Crossing my fingers really hard. Lol
  13. I had gastric sleeve in 10/2013 and even with following the diet plan I still felt hungry, cravings don't go away and the sleeve allows slider foods and sweets to go down without complications and I now have GERD. I lost 63 lbs of the 100 lbs I needed to lose and have slowly been creeping back up. I am in the beginning stages of having a sleeve to bypass revision. Only you know what's best for your situation but I just wanted to share my experience. Good luck.
  14. @hopekate I pray that you take this very seriously. I have spoken to several ppl that never had GERD pre op and had it so badly post op post op that they needed a revision. With revision your at a much much higher risk for complications. Some ppl, their GERD improve immediately postop but in 3 or 6 years it comes back with vegenence! Think of reversible procedures like the Gastric Ballon and Lapband. You will lose the weight and be in a position to have the Nissan procedure. A small hatial hernia does not cause the significant issues your facing. The nurses and surgeon won't live in your body! There's a lot a lot of research that says the sleeve is creates a high pressure system that leads to acid reflux. I worry that you're getting bad advice. I can't believe your surgeon is suggesting a procedure that could be revised! Sorry for the rant. I was tested for acid reflux pre op. My surgeon refuses to do this procedure with anyone with acid reflux!

    Scared about MGB, any insight??

I've had both the sleeve and the revision to mgb in Tijuana. With the sleeve my father was so worried about me going there (I was 42 years old) that he went with me. He was very impressed with how clean everything was and how well I was taken care of. He and my daughter were also very well cared for. So when I returned for the mgb he felt ok about me going there again. My fiancé had refused to go the first time because he was so worried and didn't want me doing it there but he went the second time after hearing how great it was. Do what's best for you and don't let anyone stand in your way. This is your life and your health. If you have acid reflux go with the mgb and if you have a good Dr. in the U.S. he will support you. If he doesn't, get a new Dr.
  16. I came across some statistics. People that get the sleeve and didn't have GERD prior to surgery.. 9% will develop GERD because of the surgery. 16% of people that have acid going into surgery had it resolve! But, acid is a concern, and one of the reasons I'm considering getting a RYN bypass to begin with. Or I'll get the sleeve, and have a 9% chance of needing a revision. Guilt.

Don't beat yourself up. We all fall off the wagon sometimes lol. I am 6 days post op with a revision and despite the doctor speeding up my food progression, I've speeded it up even further by starting myself on soft foods ahead of schedule. The liquid diet thing is just not for me! Sent from my iPhone using BariatricPal
  18. Unfortunately, this is one of the most common side effects of the sleeve. Ongoing issues with acid reflux, I thought I would be low risk. But struggling with it now two months post op. Even if you "refuse" to take them you may not have a choice. Acid reflux post op is serious due to changes to your anatomy and your very likely to suffer from it. Some ppl have it so bad that the only relief is to revise to the Gastric Bypass! I am tryin very hard to be optimistic and working on transitioning to natural remedies and H2 blockers. I hope it works, otherwise my options are kidney faliure or esophageal cancer lol.
  19. @Newme17 Bear in mind, this is not your run of the mill acid reflux. I am in treatment from my doctor. It's barely controlled with two 40 mg PPIs a day. Taking PPIs long term is not good. There are ppl on this forum that had to revise to Gastric Bypass due to very severe acid reflux that is as a result of the sleeve...it's a high pressure system. This is a reality. Hearing both ends is important. All the best.
  20. Hi I got my Sleeve to MGB revision surgery done yesterday in Tijuana, MX by Dr jaime Ponce de leon. I'm surprised at how well I am recovering right now. I'm doing way better than I did when I got my Sleeve in July 2010. Dr. Ponce has been doing the MGB for years and in December 2016 he was trained first-hand by Dr Rutledge the creator of the Mini Gastric Bypass during a conference in TJ. Dr. Ponce was only going to bypass me as recommended by Dr Rutledge in sleeve revisions, but he found a larger than usual fundus which my previous Dr. is known for creating. He reshaped my pouch and bypass 7ft of intestines. I had a little gas discomfort after surgery, but I'm up walking comfortably on my own. I'm thankful for this forum! All of your stories have been an inspiration to me during these 9 months of researching. I'm looking forward to helping others as I recover as well. If you have any questions please don't hestitate to ask.
  21. Hey there Mimismom- Did you ever make any decisions on your possible revision surgery. I feel like Im really having a hard time finding info I want. I really want to hear other people who have gone from Sleeve to Mini Gastric Bypass. I want to hear more about specific experiences. People that are 3, 6, 9 mo, 1-2 years out. Anything really. I'm a 2014 sleever who went to Mexico, no complications, high weight 313, low weight 245, then pregnancy last year (my LAST!) Current weight 281- Highly considering revision surgery.

    Any Florida sleevers?

I live in Orlando east and I'm having my sleeve revised this month. Would love to speak with others close to home. Sent from my iPad using BariatricPal
  23. Well, hello everyone! I just happened to come across this site while researching. I wish I'd have found it much sooner!. So, I need some assistance. Please be forewarned, this will be a rather long post so, if you don't want to read too much, I won't be offended....feel free to stop reading!! I had DS surgery in 2013 and until the end of 2015, enjoyed a wonderful outcome of weight loss (down to 155 lbs) and pretty much, eating as I pleased and staying at the same weight, within 5 lbs. I decided to have the plastic surgery for the removal of excess skin from my arms as well as a breast lift and augmentation (but with my own tissue, not implants, a story for another time!) in January last year. A couple of days before my scheduled surgery, I was having some issues with something I had not experienced since DS...constipation. I didn't think much of it. Just rolled with it. The night before surgery, I started with horrible stomach pains, continued constipation and cold sweats. Because I didn't want to lose my surgery deposit, and I was feeling ok the next morning, I went ahead with the surgery. It went well and I was sent home the same day to recover. I was still constipated and the following day, began vomiting and started with the worse pain I'd ever felt in my life. (Side note: I am disabled with permanent nerve damage in my neck and can no longer work.....and I have had two neck surgeries (among MANY others). So, I feel like I've experienced pain unlike most people have.) The pain on that day got so bad, I could not get up off of the bathroom floor and ended up calling 911. I was left on a gurney in the ER hallway for hours screaming in pain. The EMTs decided that since I had had surgery the day prior, that was what was causing my pain instead of letting me see a doctor right away. When I finally got to see one, the CT scan he ordered scared him so much that he immediately called one of the doctors in my bariatiic practice (of whom he was a friend) and sent me 45 minutes away to another hospital via ambulance for emergency surgery. I had an obstruction that was so severe, my small intestine had become necrotic. The doctor told me a couple of days later, if I had arrived at the hospital an hour later, I would be dead. After a miserable six day stay in the hospital, I was sent home to recover, finally able to eat somewhat normal food again! For the next couple of months, I stayed full of fluid to the tune of not being able to get in my clothes. I was also still expierencing constipaation. About two months later, I gained 20lbs in a three week period. I was devastated but was comforted by my surgeon who was certain the weight gain was a symptom of the consipation. Regardless, going up from a size 8 to a 12 put me even deeper than my normal level of depression (related to self esteem issues, family issues, etc). I started on a journey of doctor visits, medications and other "remedies" for this problem I was having. I even ended up giving myself daily injections of a prescription laxative that threw me into the Medicare donut hole to the tune of $2000 for 60 days of medicine. During all of this, my surgeon even did a laparoscopy to make sure everything was functioning properly. He did say the other doctor had repaired my intestine during the emergency surgery but made it more of a loop DS so, he put it back the way he did it for my DS. With all these things, my bowels finally started moving again and I was able to back off from the injections. I did not, however, lose any weight. In July, I had another plastic procedure to remove the excess skin from my thighs and back. After a very long and painful recovery (infections not to be believed), I actually, despite having a great deal of tissue removed, had GAINED more weight. Another 10 pounds! That eventually came off and I got down to the 20-25 lbs above my "settled" weight. BUT, despite exploring EVERY avenue, could not lose any more weight. I was even seeing other doctors to explore things like hormones, etc that could be keeping me from losing the weight. It was almost like this was my new settled weight. NOT acceptable to me.....not after knowing what it's like to wear a size 8 after being overweight since age 5.....forget the entire wardrobe I now have and cannot wear! I finally went back to see my surgeon a few weeks ago and he did an x-ray that showed that my stomach was a bit larger than most of his DS patients at my stage and since I have continued to suffer with GERDS, set me up with a procedure they dubbed a "partial gastrectomy". He essentially, stapled my stomach to make it smaller, thereby reducing the volume in my stomach giving food less time to become acidic and travel back up the esophagus. I had surgery on Monday. Came home the next day. He told me I would not have to follow the same prolonged diet as when I had my DS but could do things in 3 day increments (3 days of clear liquids, 3 days of full liquids, 3 days of puréed food, etc). I am swollen again. I am wearing my jogging pants instead of anything that will restrict my swollen stomach. My weight is the same (175 lbs)....which I know consists of some water weight from the swelling....I DEFINELTY feel a difference with the volume I can take in. And, I have actually experienced some vomiting if I overfill with fluid, which rarely happened to me before (and not so close to my DS). I am just having THE HARDEST time consuming liquids only. I've allowed myself to migrate to the puréed food stage a couple of days early and have kept things down fine. I just wonder how long I really need to wait to eat regular food again. I mean, this ain't my stomach's first rodeo, if ya know what I mean! Just wondering if there was anyone else out there that had gone through a similar experience and came out on the other end and what that result was. Anyone willing to share a similar experience will be greatly appreciated! However, NO JUDGEMENT PLEASE. I do suffer with depression and have more stress right now than I care to admit (outside of the whole weight situation). Thank you if you took the time to read this far! I'm glad to have a forum I can now refer to if I have questions or issues and, perhaps even make a few new friends! ~W
  24. Had a band to sleeve revision on Monday new Feb 6th. Everything is as predicted. How long should I wait to weigh myself? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
  25. I would think long and hard about this decision. I had the revisions and coming to terms to accept my decision. It's incredibly difficult. I need to stop wishing I could go back in time. You can't reverse this like the lapband. That might sound good...but what ig something goes wrong. Acid reflux issues are real and they impact your life quality. Your young, can you live for the next 40 or 50 yrs without the majority of your stomach? Is it rational to destroy a healthy organg for weight loss when regain is real. Ppl do regain. All the best
