Will I be broken forever?
trekker954 replied to kjkashmaniac's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
For me I know planning made a big difference. I had learned alot from these forums before the surgery, so when I got home, I had an action plan in place. I knew getting my fluids in and/or Protein shakes those first few weeks were vital. I took all the advice to use small cups and sip sip sip. I'm not sure if I were one of the lucky ones, or just followed the advice here and did not feel ill, nor vomit, etc. And I'm sort of a picky eater, even when moving to the next Phase, I hate yogurt, cottage cheese and fish. Take your ppi and anit nausea meds every day. Also once you start your Vitamins (usually after two weeks post op), you'll start feeling better. I'd say week 3 you will feel pretty good and start seeing the results. I'm mostly replying to you, because you said you are going back to work. Again, I think the most important thing you can do when you venture back out into the world is PLAN. I started on soft/mushie Day 12. I didn't use my magic bullet as much as I thought. But its so important that you always have plenty of Water (I had to mix my water with crystal light or ice tea or the like - water was very difficult for me those first few weeks as it is for many of us - weird, but it just is); and pack you lunch box for work. I hope you like greek yogurt, cottage cheese and Protein drinks. I prefer the taste of ready to drink types, Premiere Protein being my favorite (find it in Wal mart). Also invest in GENEPRO, mixes easily. I can even mix it in some of my mushy type food. You will be singing a different tune in a few weeks, I promise you!!! Hang in there. We are here for you!!!! I do feel for you, if you have home responsibilities. I'm 62 years young, and did not have to care for children. My biggest fear is when I'd sit on the couch my pittie would want to jump right on my lap, but she even knew something was up and did not do that until about week six. I did have to be pulled up from a sitting position for about a week. -
How are people staying under 1000 calories?
rick_ron replied to rick_ron's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Awesome, thanks for easing my worries. I did not realize that too much of a deficit can be a bad thing. I'll talk to the NUT about that. Thanks for the almond milk idea, never even heard of it before. As far as my inaccurate chicken count, I've been eating about 4 oz of NOT FRIED (eek) chicken breast or thigh. In the Jambalaya, I use crumbled up and cooked cauliflower. If you haven't tried that before, it is amazing. Can't tell it's not rice when it's mixed in. If anyone sees this in the future, I'm still doing Protein drinks because my goal for protein is like 80+, and since I can eat about 4 oz of chicken or a cup of greek yogurt for a meal, it doesn't cover much. So, I've been drinking 2 glasses of milk with a scoop of GENEPRO (30 grams/scoop). Hoping it gets me up over that 80 grams of protein I'm shooting for. Is it ok that so much of my protein intake is in this powdered form? Quick question, if I'm more active than normal people (coaching football + normal exercising+vball) should I up my protein goal a little to help with recovery? It's something I'll ask my doc, but that isn't for like 3 weeks, so I'll put it to this group first. Thanks so much, I feel a lot better that I'm not screwing anything up. Sounds like it's just my body taking its sweet time. Rick -
I had surgery on 10/24. Tomorrow will be 1 week post surgery. I knew everyone has different experiences but I've always done well with surgeries and medications and medical thing. This is nothing like I could have imagined. I knew I wouldn't be hungry but I don't think I actually grasped or frankly believed that was possible. Now I find myself barely eating anything. Not my Protein drinks or yogurt and drinking is the hardest thing in the world. It's physically painful in my chest to drink. Emotionally I've felt at Rock bottom. The nausea after my surgery has me vomiting brown liquid and I kept whining "why did I do this to myself?" I've been a complete recluse ignoring phone calls and texts and in the spirit of complete honesty, I have not even Pet my dog since I've been home from the hospital. This animal I've taken care of since he was 8 weeks I have no desire to be around. My family is incredibly supportive and I know this will make me sound ridiculously ungrateful... but they are so supportive it's annoying. I truly do know how lucky I am to have a family like I do because I have seen and read a lot about unsupportive families and spouses. They keep telling me it will get better and that they know how I feel but how can they? They have not had this surgery and have no idea what it's been like this past week. I just need to know if this does get better? When will I feel as amazing as everyone says they feel? When will I be able to drink liquids without pain? I know that things will never be as they were and I'm glad for that, but today I just need to know that someone does understand the way I feel and that there is a light at the end of this tunnel. Sorry for the saga. I think that was officially longer than any opening credit of a star wars movie Sent from my SM-G930V using the BariatricPal App

Are you ever truly prepared for this?
simpsongrad replied to simpsongrad's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The nutritionists want you to eat "real" food and not be dependent on Protein supplements that have harmful chemicals. They strongly believe in double milk - skim milk with dry milk powder. I have been using Fairlife milk with no sugar added carnation instant Breakfast mixed in. I try to get three in a day but it is difficult. The fairlife milk has 13 grams of protein and the instant breakfast mix has an additional 13 so it like a Protein shake but I guess more natural? They suggest a lot of greek yogurt, soups, and pudding for the full liquid portion. I have to do this for 2 weeks, then 2 weeks of pureed foods and then a month of soft foods before having solid, non blended food. That puts me having my first real food at Christmas! I wonder if that will be a good present or not. LOL! -
When you say you can eat less, do you mean of the same food? Like you could eat a 5oz Greek yogurt and now you can only eat half? Or you could eat 2oz of chicken breast and now you can't? Is it consistently less or do you have hit and miss days? If it's pretty consistent and with the same foods I would bring it to your surgeons attention because there is a small chance you could have a structure (a narrowing from scar tissue basically). If somedays can eat more and some less or you can just eat less chicken than cottage cheese then yeah I would say it's pretty normal. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

BEST protien shake option
Butterflywarrior replied to lemonzinger907's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm using g6 sport vanilla whey isolate Protein powder made with stevia ...I got it on recommendation at GNC and it has 25grams of protein per delicious scoop. It is not chalky and in skim milk, it tastes like a melted milk shake. I now add yogurt to it and it's just awesome sauce I still drink chocolate preimere protein but the sucralose makes me pretty I'll so I leave them for emergencies since my insurance bought like four cases of it for me!!! I'm told the g6 is better quality then Isopure but isopure is more popular bc they heavy advertise to weight loss doctors and so on. They have more sodium and stuff as well than this product but I can't vouch for all of that. I need to buy unflavored Protein Powder next.... -

I'm totally feeling the same, sleeved on 10/13 and I am feeling a little uneasy about the reality of this. Nutritional has put me on phase III, scramble eggs, shakes, broth, & tuna. The eggs and tuna alls feel like it gets stuck in my throat. I totally feel like I can only eat mushy; yogurts, I tried mash potatoes and broth. I kind of feel some regret Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Are you ever truly prepared for this?

So I was sleeved last Tuesday (10/25). I feel like I was as prepared as I could possibly be. I lost weight pre-op, had no trouble following the liquid diet, researched the heck out of it and felt I had a handle on the next stage. It seems so different than I thought it would be. I have had terrible nausea but relatively no pain. I just can't wrap my arms around the inability to eat and drink. I am getting in my Water but really struggling with the Protein, especially since my surgeon doesn't allow Protein shakes. I get double milk, Soups fortified with dry milk, pudding made with double milk and Greek yogurt. It is hard!!!! They said to take it slow and I have but wow! I am probably only getting 300 to 400 calories per day and feel like that is difficult. I know it will get better but I don't think I expected how hard it would be. @@surfhudson, I don’t think there is anything wrong with snacking as long as you count it towards your daily totals and make up for it by having smaller meals. I mean, if you’re going to have 1,400 calories, for example, it doesn’t matter much whether you have three meals of 400, 500, and 500 calories, or three meals of 350 calories PLUS two Snacks each with 175 calories. As for what to have…think Protein, then Fiber, and of course filling! I always like to think about easy snacks, too, because I tend to grab whatever’s around. If nothing healthy is on hand, I am more likely to go for easy junk like chips. You might start with a protein, like hard-boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, low-fat string cheese, tuna, or Peanut Butter. Then think about adding some fiber, usually from fruit or vegetables. Have cottage cheese with fruit or veggies, dip cucumbers in Greek yogurt, pair celery or apples with peanut butter, or dip carrots into hummus. Beans and soybeans make a nice two-fer – they have protein and fiber! You can have roasted chickpeas or soybeans, or have a half-cup of fat-free refried beans or low-sodium canned beans. For something sweet, you can always do low-sugar flavored yogurt, or a Protein Bar, or fruit with ricotta cheese or non-fat cream cheese.

I stuck to scrambled eggs, cottage cheese, greek high Protein yogurts as well as Protein drinks initially, in the soft food phase and introduced other foods slowly. That way I could log down all the protein, carbs etc I had that day rather than making a meal and not really knowing the nutritional value of what I was able to eat. It's boring I know but I added foods one at a time so I knew what was working for me and what wasn't. It was only when I was near goal that I relaxed about eating meals that I couldn't track as much. Congrats on the surgery

Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery 10/24/2016
DelRey310 replied to DelRey310's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes I had the sleeve over two years ago and then converted the sleeve to the bypass. Post op six days now. Yes I had to do the two week diet prior to surgery. The first week consisted of a Protein shake for Breakfast and lunch, and for dinner, 1/4" chicken, Turkey or fish with veggies. Second week was all liquids, including Water, homemade broths, Protein shakes & tea. Tomorrow will be two weeks that I have been on liquids and it is very hard. I am so tired of protein shakes so I've literally been drinking more of the broths and teas over the shakes. I've been able to do about 1-2 shakes a day. I feel satisfied without restriction when sipping. I can finish one cup of tea or broth without any discomfort. I've finally lost the six pounds that I gained during the surgery from the carbon dioxide and all of the fluids from the IV. I have one more week to go on liquids and then I can have my first egg. Either poached, scrambled or egg whites. I can also have lowfat geek yogurt and cottage cheese during week 3. I can't wait for that. We are almost right around the same dates for our surgery . I'm happy for you! Keep in touch. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -
Pre op jitters +questions 11/9 surgery
Brandon130 replied to Ssze1109's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Hey! I had a similar pre-op diet allowance, however I went to the extreme and did almost completely liquids with the occasional solid. I'll be honest, the first 3-4 days were really hard, but then it was like my body and mind kinda snapped together and I was fine. I used Muscle Milk as Meal Replacements. I know it's more expensive than just buying a thing of Protein powder, but they tasted so good and I just couldn't handle the consistency of Protein Powder drinks after the third day. Plus they have a pumpkin spice flavor that tastes amazing! Back on track, maybe have chicken and veggies once a day and do a replacement shake for your other two meals? In between meals, you can have sugar free Jello and plain Greek yogurt (bleh. Tasted gross but it curbed the hunger a little so can't really complain). And broth. I also couldn't stand chicken broth, so I just stuck to beef broth. But if you want more options, you could strain chicken noodle Soup and get that broth, or buy a bunch of ramen (whichever flavor you want) and just use the seasoning packet it comes with in hot Water. You can do this if you want to. The hardest part for me was fighting the hunger sensation. At first I felt hungry ALL the time, but then after a few days, it was like it went away over night. Now people are all different, so I won't promise it will be the same for anyone or everyone else, but when I felt like I was going to cheat or something, I kinda made a rule that I would just sit still and I wouldn't move until I knew I could get past it. The whole point of the pre-op is to shrink your liver, and I was determined to not self-sabotage. You just kind of find your anchor and stick to it. Also, and I know this sounds silly, but I have never used Twitter before, but I started one that I didn't share with anybody and would use it as a mental journal/outlet. I was honest, so when I was hungry I would complain about it like a child on there, or when I was feeling better, etc. I think that helped me mentally Sorry this post was so long, I got carried away... hope something somewhere in all this was helpful to you! Nothing tastes or sounds appetizing
QueenOfTheTamazons replied to CaSteph's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Have you tried dairy? Oikos yougurt, soft cheeses, fairlife milk, or super soft eggs? I like to do a 1 part fairlife to 3 parts liquid eggs with one laughing cow wedge. It makes super soft eggs that dont weep liquid. A four ounce serving ends up at 100cals and 14g Protein. ETA - The eggs sounded better than the yogurt I had grabbed so i put it back and made myself some. HW 385 SW 359 CW 340 Sleeved 10/5/16 -
Hello everyone...I need help. I'm almost 4 weeks post op and for the first couple of weeks I did fine. Last week I got really sick with a stomach virus and since then everything has changed. I always have this horrible taste in my mouth, I can barely eat, I try to drink as much as I can...popsicles seem best sugar free of course, and everything tastes different. I was eating yogurt, pudding, chicken, eggs, and now I can't tolerate any of that stuff. It all tastes funny. I have talked to my surgeon, and he said it will get better, but I'm so depressed. I'm beginning to regret my decision. Has anyone come across this and can anyone give me some other choices to eat. Tomato Soup with melted cheese was one of my favorites, and now I hate it. I'm 24lbs down since October 5th, but it doesn't even matter because I'm so depressed. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks Sent from my SCH-I545 using the BariatricPal App

If you don't think protein is important.
gustavio posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So I had to go out of town for work for 4 days. I forgot my Protein at home and with meeting after meeting didn't have much time to eat, let alone find a GNC for more protein. I had the free hotel Breakfast (which id just grab a yogurt) and then one more meal after that for the day. So I really was getting less than 20g of protein a day. Before leaving for out of town I was on a long streak where I was losing a pound a day and I was THRILLED. I just couldn't wait to get home and weigh myself. Well, when I got home I had GAINED a pound. I couldn't believe my eyes. I ate healthy, didn't eat much of anything, drank tons of Water. only thing i did different is that I didn't take my protein supplement. So there ya are folks. It IS important. String cheese , nuts , yogurt, protein drinks or bars...
-
I am 2 years post-op, so what I am eating now may not apply to you, but I will share anyway. A normal day for me is an egg and 2 sausage links for breakfast. Yogurt and nuts for lunch. salad with chicken or some other Protein for dinner. I'll have a Protein shake or bar for a snack at some point during the day as well. On weekends I mix it up a little and eat whatever I want, but stay under 50 carbs per meal. Yes, it is pretty boring. Sometimes it seems like the only variety I get in my diet is changing the flavor of yogurt or protein shake. But, it has worked and continues to work for me, so I continue to do it. I just try to satisfy my cravings on weekends and ignore them the rest of the time. You will figure out what works for you. Best of luck on your journey!

3rd day R-N-Y oost-op protein shakes question. Premier Protein shakes OK?
RonnieBob replied to Roadblock's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My Nutritionist and Bariatric team strongly recommended Premier Protein both pre and post for easy protein. The only drawback to the Protein shakes were they made it necessary for me to begin mixing in some additional Fiber to my yogurt and other soft foods. In addition to Premier Protein, I've began to also use EAS Myoplex Original with 42 grams of Protein. I drink 1/2 to start the day and then the other 1/2 later in the day. I especially like their chocolate Fudge flavor. I just had my 5 week post-op visit with my doctor and the bariatric team and I am down 64 pounds from my HW and 28 pounds from my weight on the day of my procedure. -
All my pre op liquid options
McKinneyMom replied to McKinneyMom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah what I listed is pretty much what my info sheet says and what they said in the class, I think they're just blanket instructions. Maybe I will add one yogurt like yours a day. I had a cup of decaf coffee with sugar free creamer which they approved and that seemed to help a lot. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

3 weeks out, food volume?
Crafty-in-Carolina replied to Crafty-in-Carolina's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I made a chicken salad yesterday that turned out surprisingly palatable. I used a can of chicken, a scoop of non-fat, plain Greek yogurt, a few pecans and raisins. A few seconds in the vita - mix blender and it was done. It was good! I ate it plain. Would have been great on crackers, but I'm sticking to my plan of purees only. -
19 days post op and need some help
Quaintrelle replied to DayzeeMay's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved on 10/14. I have been eating applesauce, cottage cheese, yogurt, butternut squash soup, sweet potato-apple soup, carrot ginger soup, and 1-2 PREMIER Shakes a day. My biggest struggle is getting the liquids in. I went back to school after the first week ( I am in bed by 8 P.M.!) and there is never enough time to sip, sip, sip....and then run to the ladies room! Best Wishes to you. -
I had my surgery on August 3. I get most of my Protein from fish---mostly broiled tilapia. Sometimes I will have a lean cut of steak or a grilled pork chop, but I tend to stick with fish. I eat sugar free yogurt for protein, too-----and when I have those moments of where I am just starving, a piece of low-fat mozzarella string cheese seems to take the edge off. I'm actually able to tolerate quite a bit of different types of food, but I have to be very careful with rice. TMI here, but the few times I have actually vomited, rice has been involved. So, I tend to stay away from that. Except for a few moments in the couple of days after surgery, I have absolutely no regrets. I love my sleeve and have been able to stop taking medication for Type 2 Diabetes. My blood pressure has been great---sometimes I feel a bit tired, but I think that is just my body adjusting to not consuming the amount of carbs that I was before. Also--my gastric sleeve surgery was my 4th surgery this year, lol. In a time span of 8 months, I had a hysterectomy, removal of my gall bladder and an appendectomy. 2016 has been quite a year!
