I am a newbie here, lots of great info thanks. I have cigna, I started my 6 months of nutrition counsel teo months a go, my BMI was about 37-38 in the two months I put on about ten lbs, the nutritionist says that it won't bear well if I gain weight during the six months of eval. I don't want to disqualify myself. I do have co morbidities, HBP. Will the small weight gain make me lose my insurance coverage? Thanks for the help

Please hang in there, I am sure that someone on this forum will have great advice for you. I, on the other hand, have a question. You lost 150 lbs with the lap band, had to have some Fluid taken out and gained almost 50 lbs, right? I totally commend you on losing the weight. As a bandster myself I know that it takes a lot of work to get the weight off. Some people think we have "taken the easy way out" by having WLS, but we both know better than that. My question has to do with the mind and changes in the way we feel about food. After having the band for 4 years your feelings/attitude/thinking about food didn't change? This scares me because after being banded for 18 months and struggling with the "mind" or "emotional" part of my food issues even now -- although I am much, much, MUCH better than before banding -- your story makes me think that maybe I will never get a handle on this. What do you think happened? Do you feel that your attitude about food is the same as before, similar or completely different? Sorry that I am "asking" rather than giving advice. I really do think you can shed some light on how the band works long term. Thanks. All the best to you on your journey. Don't lose hope ... we are all here for you. You can start again with us and lose those pounds in no time. ~F -
Lurker Saying Hello

Good luck to you! What is the 6mth diet for? What does it tell them? If you loose weight will they say - Oh you can do it yourself? I don't understand why they do that. I know pre-op why they do but ?? It will be a couple yrs for me in Ontario so I will likely go with self pay in awhile and get a loan to pay over 5 yrs or so. Worth it to me. I want a life back now not in 2 or 3 yrs. Keep us posted  -

Mommato5 replied to Mommato5's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I have contacted my insurance and the bariatric center at our local hospital has only 3 dr's to pick from so hopefully that's the easy part! I will need a 3 month weight loss program daily food journal and monthly weigh in Evaluation from a mental health group sleep apnea study Doesn't sound hard the gentleman said it could be by April if things go well. My insurance says I'm a good candidate since my bmi is 44.4 and I have back issues and knee issues I'm young and need to get healthy for my family! Being 29 and can't play on the playground with your kids is hard -

For those of you who have had or are having the 3 week stall, I found a great article that explains the reason why this happens. It's about plateau's in general, but it really sheds some light on the 3 week stall. It doesn't use that exact phrase, but you'll know it when you read it. The author uses the phrase," the inevitable stall"....here is the crux of it. "A "stall" a few weeks out is inevitable, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a saber tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored." http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html

Hello my name is Joy I been going through this process since April I went to the 3 month program and was denied because I needed doctor notes. One month later my Nut said lets do the 3 months over so I did... summited the new documentation yesterday. My only concern is I weight more in this 3 month program then the last 3 month program but no weight gain with in the 3 month program... Does anyone have advice on this. The 2 separate programs should not be compared into one?

Hello and welcome! Congrats on making the weight loss surgery decision. Things might seem a tad overwhelming now but before you know it, your day will be here too. I'm three months out from my RNY and I couldn't be happier! Best of luck! -
Pre-Op Diet Starts Tomorrow. SO confused and overwhelmed.
DaleCruse replied to SummerShadow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you've created a story about why you can't lose weight: "It's SO confusing! Might as well not even try! I'll end up a failure anyway!" Doctor's orders - like so much in life - is open to interpretation. Should you get 60, 80, or 100 grams of protein daily? The exact number doesn't matter. Get between 60-100 grams & you'll be good. Consider how else this story is impacting your life & really learn to flip the script to achieve a different outcome. You are not alone. Good luck! -

Thank you for reply. I guess I am still nervous about my inability to exercise. I cannot walk very far without pain and I worry about the ability to lose weight. I know with the weight loss that I should have less pain but I don't know if it is going to be enough. I am confident the diet will be manageable but if I cant take celebrex i am not sure how mobile iI will be. I know I am worrying to much but I only have one shot at this. I know when I did weight watchers I just stopped losing. I got so discouraged I figured I might as well give up. I can't thank you enough for responding so quickly and will keep you posted. I have just started the required testing. I have to do a colonoscopy and will have to stop my meds for a few days. I will see how I do. The arthritis is not going away so I have to be reasonable. God Bless -
Surgery tomorrow and i'm terrified!!
janinemaire replied to vicki s's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right with you Vicki, my surgery is 8:30 tomorrow. I cannot wait till its over. I think its good to try to keep busy today. I have a paper for school I have to complete and then do housework, plus were busy with Halloween. I have been on a liquid diet since yesterday and I am so jealous of your breakfast, that is my favorite meal. I don't have to drink that drink you have to. Good luck with that. Were going to be fine with the surgery and remember in a few months how much weight were going to lose. Were going to be able to shop any where we want and enjoy things we haven't been able to do. When are you coming home, I come home Wednesday. Please post soon as you can, I will. I'll pray for you and everyone getting there surgery this week. Talk to you soon, Janine -
Two Months Since Surgery So Far So Good

Glad there are others! I was banded 2 months ago as well, and you've beat me by a few lbs on weight loss. I just had my first fill yesterday, so hopefully I'll continue to lose. -
2 month surgiversary/sleeveaversary
emma4884 replied to sbg224's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My two month anniversary is tomorrow. Have lost 26 pounds since surgery. Of course I wish I'd lost more. However let's remember we probably shouldn't compare ourselves to others, even though it's so tempting. If we follow the rules about food, hydration and exercise, we will eventually attain our goals, right? After 6 months of pre-op requirements, it's sometimes difficult to be patient after surgery too. This excess weight has been with me for many years. I just keep telling myself to do this one step at a time although I'd love to find a shortcut! -
Just got home from hospital
lsereno replied to Fusilli66's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Try taking really teeny sips. I took 15 minutes to get down an ounce the first few days after surgery. Also, my stomach grumbled like a Mac truck was driving through it the first couple of weeks. Prop yourself up with pillows in bed or sit in a comfy recliner and hog the TV. Before you get settled, upt a small container of Water by where you will be resting. Use a clock to watch the time and drink one ounce from a medicine cup or a 3/4 full shot glass every 15 minutes. I'm sitting here almost 5 months out and 60 lbs. down from my pre-op weight. Energy has returned and I can guzzle a cup of water at a time if I'm inclined (which I am when I drink my benefiber- it gets thick quick!). Point is, it is worth it and temporary. Baby yourself - you deserve it!!!! I put on hand lotion and lip gloss every once in while to cheer myself up, but everyone has their own favorite thing. Lynda -
Yes! I dd the 6 month supervised diet and submitted a 6 year weight history as well just to be safe!

Hello. This is my first post, but I've been reading for a while and what I read helped me pick a surgeon, talk to my family, and is helping me get through recovery. So far so good -- in fact, so far so great. I was walking after surgery, never felt nausea or much pain, and just generally feel fine. Clear liquids were tough, but thick liquids are fine, especially since I'm thinning refried beans with chicken broth and calling them a thick liquid! My husband and I were sleeved 11 July with Dr. Aceves and are 2 weeks out today. We don't live in the United States, but we do spend a month here every summer and will be leaving on 27 July. I've read so many old posts about people freaking out about this and that -- stretching their sleeves, stalling, what to eat -- and almost every time their current ticker shows they're losing weight and doing great. I'm trying to be chilled out about it based on how well it seems almost everyone does. My only problem right now is that I'm so tired by the end of the day that I can sleep for 12 hours easily. I'm not really worried about it since i just had surgery, but it is driving my mother-in-law crazy. Since we're leaving in 2 days, I'm trying not to worry about it! I want to thank those of you who post since everything I have read has been so helpful.

I have ankylosing spondylitis (kind of like RA without RF), hashimotos and popcorn lung. However, I had it all diagnosed prior to surgery so it definitely wasn’t connected. Maybe doctors assumed symptoms were related to weight so you didn’t get the diagnosis until later?

Reversals are actually done a lot more often than you would think. I may be doing this by the end of the year. There are Facebook groups for gastric bypass takedowns and support. Lots of people have had mechanical issues and needed reversals. They are definitely high risk, however if they can take you apart, they can put you back together, although I wouldn't go to just anyone that's for sure!. I'm personally experiencing malnutrition, and severe weight loss (and no, none of this is my doing. I did all that I was supposed to over the last 16 years). Had a revision in September, and still having complications. Seeing my doctor again next week to discuss next step, which is most likely the takedown. They also do them on those who continue to get ulcers, or severe dumping (which I also get from everything I eat). In regard to weight gain from the reversal, it's one's choice to eat badly and put the weight back on, just like you can start making bad choices with rny and never expect to stretch your stomach. It happens in most cases. I learned a lot about eating well, healthy/organic, locally grown as often as possible. (wish I knew then what I know now, I regret my surgery a lot) I would actually give anything to eat a salad or a piece of fish right now, instead I am getting tpn through a picc line. So even though you follow the plan, like I did it doesn't mean you wont have issues.

I feel like I'm eating to much??
BetsyB replied to KERBY's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I understand what you're saying. When your stoma was swollen, the 4-6 ounces you're supposed to eat seemed like enough. Now that the swelling is down, you either don't feel as full as you did before, or you become hungry sooner. Yes, this is completely normal. With reduced swelling, you have less restriction, and food can move out of the upper portion of your banded stomach more rapidly. So you get hungry sooner. This is what is known as bandster hell. Lots of people would tell you that now is not the time to worry about weight loss---that it's time for healing. While I agree that your body is healing, I'd suggest that you stick as closely as possible to your doctor's recommended eating regimen. You can lose weight during this time. You may be hungry, but you would be in any event--so why not work to maximize your loss. The previous poster Tish is basing her opinion that you're eating too much on her own doctor's recommendations. Remember, each of our doctors has his/her own "rules". Yours has you on mushies, and does not require 21 days of liquids like Tish's doctor. So her evaluation that you're eating too much is not based on what you've been prescribed. Stick with what your doctor recommends as much as you can. If you find that you're really, really hungry, call his/her office. They may have good ideas to help tide you over from meal to meal--or they may offer a fill sooner than ordinarily scheduled. -
Thank you. I am trying to stay positive. Would live to lose weight been stuck for two weeks. Started low BMi but still. Hope adding more calories helps

Hello- I am wondering about how much exercise you all were doing pre-sleeve. I have been inactive for quite a bit and while I do know that exercise is crucial to success, I am also a bit depressed with no energy to move and very little desire to go out aside from necessity (work, errands). Before the lectures begin I know that exercise will help with the depression. I will be having a sleeve done in approx a month and i have a lower bmi to start out with, which will make the weight loss a bit harder from what I understand. How hard did you all exercise before surgery? If I do resistance/callisthenics from the privacy of my apt, will that help after surgery? Or is it all about the cardio? I assume every little bit helps... Thanks for taking the time to respond and weigh in (get it hurhurhur).
