  1. Hoping to have my sleeve surgery in September at Lahey Clinic Hospital in Burlington, Ma. with Dr. David Brams if all goes well with my pre-op testing. I am excited! 70 years old, retired RN and ready to be done with this weight and how it gets in my way. Had thought I would only consider the band, since it is reversible, I thought...but after lots of research I found myself thinking I wanted to do this only once, that is have surgery only once and read myself into believing the gastric sleeve was the best option for me. The nurse practitioner, who went over my particular family history, agreed and so here I am...waiting...but not so nervous as I was a week ago. I am excited to have it and move forward. mojaleski from NH

    HELP!

My doctor told me it was ok to use whatever means necessary to stay regular, but I was afraid of becoming dependent on laxatives and suffered severely for months. I finally got it that he must know more than me and it would be ok to take his advice. So far, I have had no ill effects from daily stool softeners and regular (not quite daily) use of laxatives. I do alternate the different preparations: Mira-Lax, Col-Rite, Milk of Magnesia, Smooth Move tea. I am so much more comfortable now! Also, about the grapefruit. I am below my goal weight and I have now increased my fruit intake. (I was already eating plenty of vegetables.) This is probably part of the reason I have been more comfortable. But I would advise being careful not to add a lot of fruit too early. It will definitely affect the rate of weight loss.

    Keeping a journal

I have journaled every day since the beginning of my six-month pre-op diet program on March 21, 2016. I have a record of what I ate each day, musings about the journey at least once per week, a weekly weight on Mondays (sometimes weights on other days when I hit a milestone), a list of milestones and when they were accomplished, and pictures at every stage along the way. I keep everything in a word doc on my computer. It is over 150 pages now! I have mostly kept it to myself, but some of my loved ones have looked at it on my computer. I'm toying with the idea of doing something with all of it when I reach my goal, but we'll see if I have that much ambition! :-)

    Personal Trainer?

I started with my personal trainer at 6 weeks post op. I lucked out finding her by going through the phone book & calling different places. My personal trainer has been in the biz for about 30 years, PLUS she also has her Master's in nutrition. Because I had my surgery in Mexico, that was important to me. She is a store-front operation with a simple layout (recumbent bike, elliptical, spinning bikes, cable machine, bands & LOTS of free weights). Once a month she weighs & measures my progress. I know that she is there waiting for me, which holds me accountable, yet if something comes up, there is no recriminations for cancelling that session. I thought I would just stay with her for a few months, but it's been almost 11 months - I'm down 135# and have lost over 55". Although I do have some sagging skin, it is so much better than people I know who have not worked out consistently. I may not need plastics when I am at goal!! If that's the case - my personal trainer will be the best money I have ever spent!!

    Personal Trainer?

Cardio is good and like the name suggests....it benefits your heart. So some cardio will always be beneficial. I also second what many posters are saying........it's better to add in weight training as well. Especially if you're one of those interested in aiding loose skin issues, physique, that kind of thing. And it (muscle) also helps to burn calories when you're resting....so many good benefits from lifting. If you're not familiar with lifting, a trainer would be very beneficial.....especially early on until you get some experience with resistance training and how to perform the different lifts. Just make sure to get a trainer that is a good fit for you and knows about your bariatric surgery history. Good luck and keep us posted!

Feel Like I Lost My Best Frenemie

I feel for you and I'm only in the pre-op diet phase. Hang in there and keep us updated on your weight loss
  7. I have very severe plantar fasciitis and have had it for two years. I've done lots of time in the bootcast and struggle to walk for exercise outside of my normal day. If you really focus on your food choices, the weight will hopefully come off. I had my surgery on Wednesday and I started the process at the end of January. From January to Wednesday I went from 311-265 with a better diet and very limited exercise.
  8. I will be 1 year out on October 6th. I've reach and went below what doctor has given as a goal. I went from 298 to current weight of 132. I am very pleased with the progress I have made throughout this past year. It is a mind set you have to live with forever. I have been given a highly helpful tool with my sleeve and thank God daily for it. Hope all you other sleevers are having as good of progress as I have had!

    Back Pain?

I've had my Band in for almost 3 months now... i'm starting to have severe pain in my back from loss of weight in my shoulders and back, and skin/fat hanging in front. My doctor/nurse say this is normal, but has anyone else had this problem? Anything that can be done besides exercise?

    Back Pain?

I have had a similar problem with MID-back pain since November. (not lower). I was banded in May 08. I've had xrays, scans, etc. Went to the chiropractor and got the feel good treatments that helped for a few hours. It never occured to me that weight LOSS could cause the pain. It seemed to me that the weight gain would cause pain but I figured losing weight wouldnt! Little did I know. Finally got referred to a good Physical therapist. He asked me if I had recently lost a lot of weight. I told him I had lost about 70 lbs since last May. He said that makes sense then. He said when you are over weight your ligments, etc are stretched to accommodate the xtra heaviness. With a big weight loss those ligaments are now trying to deal with the "unstretching" and are confused so to speak. He gave me back exercises and rubber band exercises for strengthening and I can now feel a vast improvement. So, I guess what Im saying is, your body can respond in various ways with such a big weight loss. Check it out with your physician.

    Macro targets

This represents a theoretical "daily total" macro split for you, separated by the different post op time ranges. Most people will eat 1-3oz of veggies by weight, which might be 1/2-3/4cup of veggies per meal (in the later stages: 6mo-1year), or some variation of that. It is not implying you should or could eat 2cups of veggies at 1 meal. It's saying aim for about 60g of carbs at the 6mo-1year mark (as an example), and 60g of fat at the 6mo-1year mark (as an example) and that's daily.

    What type of scale?

I have the Fitbit Aria which is not only a lovely design, but syncs with many apps and auto recognizes you by weight. Fun fact, the battery had died on it (it told me for a month but I was lazy) so it forgot the last couple months. I got on and had lost so much it didn't remember who I was! Gotta love bariatrics.

    Starting at 216lb

Here's the thing. one pound of fat takes 3500 calories to burn. If you want to burn off 36 pounds, you need a deficit of 126,000 calories in your diet. If you are sedentary, multiply your weight times 12 and that's how many calories you can eat per day to stay the same weight. Now if you went on a 1200 calorie a day diet instead, you would have a deficit of calories every day. (As your weight goes down, the amount of calories it takes to maintain your weight goes down too). I did some rough calculations and on a 1200cal a day diet, being sedentary, it would take you about 14.5 weeks to lose 36 pounds. Want to lose it faster? Add in the exercise... Hope this helps,
  15. Starting around the 216lb range...how much weight or how long should I expect it to take to get below the 180 range?

    Hello

Yes you will Michelle. You are gonna be eating like gourmet food which is flavorful but in less quantity. You will lose weight depending on how tight is the band. I am in a point where I do not loose or gain, but I reached my goal. When you reach your goal try to fill the band where u dont gain or loose. You will get used to the band after a while. Its great.

    Trouble Breathing

I had the sleeve recently and experienced this and had no issues prior. I was 199 lbs on surgery day so wasn't my weight causing it. I actually went to ER because I was struggling. Long story short it was my pain meds. I was taking liquid narcotics and I read the bottle. Sure enough on the bottle it stated may cause difficulty breathing. I threw it right out. Just dealt with a little discomfort. I didn't care. After about a week after stopping it my breathing got back to normal. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N920A using the BariatricPal App
  18. Hello. I'm 6.5 months post VGS and in a major stall. I'm beginning to think have gone as far as I can go at 35 lbs overall. the bright spot is that I am not gaining, but have be within the same 1.5 to 2 lbs since December 2016. I'm looking for sleevers over 65 who may be having the same issues as I am. I have lost slowly from the beginning with stalls every few weeks. And Oh yes, I'm diabetic. Regular insulin and one heart/BP med were stopped immediately post-op and I have not needed to resume them. But I am still on long acting insulin and BP meds. I am tracking what I eat I work out with a physical trainer twice a week and try to keep up my steps the remainder of the week. I have tried using the protein shakes again, liquids only for 2 days at a time without much change. My surgeon tells me not to worry about how much I lost, but to concentrate on following the plan, as this is a marathon not a sprint. But that still leaves me having gone through this surgery for such a small loss. Anyone else overcome this?

    Dating

I have been avoiding dating for awhile... especially since my weight climbed up quite high. The last time I was seeing someone was a year ago and that lasted like, a week! I think I am going to be ready to date again soon. I am feeling so much better about myself. Has anyone else gone through this? I know there are lots of women out there... but I am also older now (31) and it seems like the bars are full of 21-24 year olds. What should I do? Where should I go? I live in a big urban area with a big gay/lesbian community and have lots of LGBT friends... however, almost all are coupled up. Thanks!

    My band date is 10/15

I am getting banded Oct 14th at Maples in Winnipeg, Manitoba. I am on day 6 of Optifast and am really needing support! I can have 3 Optifast and up to 2 cups of non-starch vagetables a day. Apart from wanting to chew my own arm off - things are great!! I am so looking forward to dealing with my weight issue once and for all. At least now when I do the right things I will see results. Where is everybody from? I am from Regina Saskatchewan.

Serious Post - Looking for Help

Generally there are two phases to weight loss surgery: the weight loss phase and the maintenance phase. The maintenance phase can sometimes be the hardest nut to crack. It is common for some people to gain a little weight after they bottom out. It is called the 20 pound bounce. But it should level out there. Some individuals gain almost all the weight back. I asked my nutritionist about this. She said a couple things. First, the tool is still there. Stretching the pouch is just a common myth. The tool is still there. Second, it takes the same amount of time that you were out of balance to return to balance. So if you gained weight for a couple years in maintenance, it will take a couple years to get back to the ideal weight. It will not happen overnight. There was a man in my small town who had weight loss surgery. He lost a tremendous amount of weight and was happy for several years. But then the pounds started adding back on and he gained all the weight back. He then realized he had a problem and put all his energy into reducing his weight. He lost it all again. One of the components of the surgery is the psychological component. If you have an overeating disorder and are contemplating suicide, that means that you have a problem in this area. And the psychological component can make it more difficult for you to achieve your goals. It must be addressed and addressed soon. So seek the help of professionals in this speciality and let them help you get back on the straight and narrow.
  23. Thank you all. I can't imagine myself losing weight. I've tried so many times and I do loose some but gain it right back plus more. Can't wait to experience the losing weight and not gaining it back!!!!
  24. I was sleeved on 6/05/2012 and have not lost ANY weight. I lost 40 lbs before I was sleeved and that is it. I have read a lot about Water intake but I haven't actually tried increasing my intake. I don't track my food but I also don't over eat. I listen to my body very well. I don't think I consume more than 800 calories a day if I actually decided to add them up. Does anyone have any advice?

    Personal Trainer?

I just read on the YMCA website that they have trainers at some of the other locations that I am also able to visit with my membership. It was $40 per hour for up to 4 people in a group. I thin we may be able to spread the cost and get a solid beginning with this. When I played football 25 years ago, we started working out for the first time. The coaches made us do a "max" lift on each exercise and then had a formula that set the weight and reps for either bulk or toning. Does anybody know of any Apps or websites that do that for you?
