  1. I personally have been very fortunate. My portions are smaller an I stay away from sugar. I am 8 mos post op and I only have 71 more pounds to go to reach my goal. I watch what I eat but I have never been a big exercise person that part is a struggle. I am thankful for the surgery, I can walk an stand where as before I could not even stand long snout to make my own bed without a break. We go shopping an we can park anywhere because I am able to walk an stay walking for long periods of time. I work outside in my yard an enjoy family outings again. My biggest struggle is clothing right now as I’m in my weight loss phase I don’t want to buy too many things so I have been looking like a bag lady tied pants on with my shirt hanging off my shoulders. For this problem I am grateful
  2. I just came back from a two-week overseas vacation. I decided not to track calories because I had no idea what was in food and I wanted to try different things, like a bite of this or that that my family was eating. I ate way too many sweets, but I also noticed that because I was not "tracking to eat" (usually I serve myself a portion then add it into the tracker and finish it), I was focusing on my hunger (that's not to say I wasn't eating too much, because I was. I ended up gaining about 2 lbs over the two weeks, which is a LOT less than before surgery, when I might gain 10 lbs on a two week overseas vacation. I found that I enjoyed focusing on my hunger cues, and I am thinking about not counting calories, but I have read so much about how tracking calories is the best predictor of success in weight loss and maintenance. I am wondering if I can focus on eating healthier foods and honoring my hunger, can I continue to lose weight and then maintain? What have other people found?

Getting ready to have this surgery

My metabolism was crap before surgery as well from too many years of skipping meals. I couldn’t lose much on 900 & 1200 calorie diets in the past (like only 5kgs after 2 months - grrr) so I understand your struggles. A big benefit of the surgery is the boost to your metabolism. The surgery actually resets a lot of things. Your actual rate of loss depends on many factors out of your control: age, gender, weight loss & gain history, genetics, existing health status. Then certain medications can slow the process too. The only thing you can control is whether you stick to your plan. It’s why we say you’ll lose at your own rate. Also the more you have to lose the faster you’ll lose in the beginning. After my surgery, I wasn’t hungry or interested in eating for ages (into my second year). I had to eat to a routine to ensure I ate the nutrients my body needed. Still do. A huge benefit of this was it changed how I looked at food. That maxim of eating to live not living to eat became true for me. Eating regularly also helps keep your metabolism burning. I’m presuming your pre surgical diet is a mix of shakes & real food??? Speak to your dietician about portion sizes to ensure you don’t eat too much or too little. Did they give you a list of foods you should eat or avoid as well? It’s just as important to ensure you are getting in all the nutrients your body needs before surgery as after - another reason not to skip meals. Think of this time as beginning new healthier eating habits & routines. This surgery has been the only thing that really worked for me & it’s still working which never happened when I dieted before - lose, gain, lose, gain, over & over was my norm. I was almost 54 when I had my surgery but had no health issues … they were likely about to begin though.

    I'm struggling losing weight

Could be a stall. I lost 30 pounds in 2 weeks, then hit a stall that I am now on day 14 of. I gained a few pounds and then nothing. Not a single ounce lost. Nada. It's super frustrating, but it's normal and from what I'm seeing and reading, it's gonna eventually break. Just gotta keep working the plan and wait it out.

    Pee smell like protein?

You could still be or are back in ketosis if you’re still losing? Does anything else smell, body odour, breath, etc., like with ketosis? Maybe change shake brands to see if something in Fairlife isn't sitting as well with you. As for your nails, are you meeting your protein goal? Are you taking your multi vitamins? Are you eating a variety of foods to get in a broad range of nutrients? Were you low in anything in your last blood test? My nails are weak & ridged because of my protein absorption issue so I understand how you feel. Glad your hair loss has improved though. PS - Congrats on your weight loss so far. 🏆

Getting ready to have this surgery

I know a lot of people who just have a protein shake for breakfast. Some people can't handle solid food first thing in the morning. The dietitian at my clinic said a protein shake is better than nothing! also, I was the same as you before I had surgery - the most I could ever lose was about 50 lbs, and even getting that much off was really tough - there were only a couple of times when I managed to do it. And then, of course, it came right back on. Surgery was the only thing that worked for me. That said, you do have to really work at it -- but if you stick to your program, you WILL lose weight...

Getting ready to have this surgery

After surgery you will eat a lower calorie amount than that for a while at least and some nutritionists recommend like 800 through the weight loss phase. Some will have you on a higher calorie goal. You will lose faster than a normal diet though because you will definitely be eating less calories in the beginning. You will start out at probably less than 600 though.

    I'm struggling losing weight

I didn't lose before surgery. So my total weight loss has been 17lbs. I'm like you. Gain a pound then lose it. I've never been an over eater. But I thought with me not eating a lot of carbs and no sugar. I would lose more then I have so far. It's just so frustrating.

    I'm struggling losing weight

3-4 weeks of stall. Majority of us have gone through it. When you're losing a huge amount of weight right after surgery (water weight) you're bound to stall for few weeks (as you regain water weight while lose fat/muscle simultaneously following weeks). Do watch the above shared video. Stalls will happen and you should be ready for it. Good Luck.

Mine was August 23rd. I lost 100lbs and feeling so much better. Still have a little gut, but doctor said it is mostly skin. I’ve been using a virtual training app called Future. It’s been great. Haven’t been doing much cardio lately though. I want to get back to jogging. I am not trying to lose more weight I just want to stay healthy and tone up now.

Getting ready to have this surgery

I almost feel guilty for admitting how easy it was for me to lose weight after the surgery. Yes, I followed the rules, but my pouch did most of the work for me. The first year is when your pouch (or sleeve) is the most restrictive, so take advantage of it!! 2 1/2 years out, I can eat a lot more now, so I have to be more strict with myself, but it's still way easier than pre-WLS. So follow the rules, and you will do great!!!

Getting ready to have this surgery

The surgery is just a tool so losing the weight is still not EASY. You still have to make the right choices and measure and log everything and head hunger doesn’t go away. That being said it’s the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

Getting ready to have this surgery

Most do really well and since its a tool some have better weight loss than others. My Dr told me it is not uncommon for some to lose 30 lbs in the first month post op but again depends on the person and the circumstances. I am 3 weeks post op and have only lost 14 lbs. I struggle or I should say my body does with letting loose of the excess weight. I am however losing inches everywhere. so thats a positive.

    4 Days Post-Op

Ive seen some say a heating pad helps as well. I had the gas pains as well but I dont think mine was as bad as some of the others on here have experienced. I considered myself very fortunate. My whole process has been good other than the weight loss portion but thats another story lol

    I'm struggling losing weight

I have not lost anything in a full 3 weeks!! Im so aggravated beyond measure! I lost I think 22 lbs fast before surgery. after surgery (May 3rd) by day 9 I was down another 14 lbs. Nothing since not a single pound. In fact I go back and forth with gain a pound then lose the pound. It is very frustrating to say the least. My team tells me I hit an early plateau after 9 days.. because I lost 36 lbs quickly. But dang lol 3 weeks out and still nothing. Now all that being said I cannot exercise much because I am pending a knee replacement as far as walking goes. I used to tell myself it was because of that but the 22 lbs I lost pre surgery I did not exercise either. So unfortunately for me I have to suck it up and trust the process and hope for the best at this point. I am very discouraged tho to say the least. It wears on me pretty heavily. I do notice clothes fitting loose and my boobs have took a big hit to my husbands dismay lol. Thighs and hips also are seeing inches coming off but that darn scale doesnt move lol

  24. Back from vacay (where 90% of my intake consisted of over easy eggs and alcohol) and i finally get to enjoy a decent bowl of food: Smoked salmon, seaweed salad, horseradish aioli and a bit of Gorgonzola. #yum 320 calories, ate it all. P.S. I’ve always disliked the food served at All-Inclusive resorts down south, so I had very low expectations, which were met, lol. I actually packed 3 bags of those salad kits from Costco (to deal with my salad addiction), which were total life-savers! P.S.S Side-note NSV…i am the same weight I was when I left…BUT I haven’t pooped yet so i’m gonna guess once I get these 12 days 😳 of food out of my intestines, i may drop a few pounds. P.S.S.S I asked Mr. to make me a steak tonight cuz i miss meaty meat 🥩🤤

    I'm struggling losing weight

Hang in there! Like you said, it's pretty much impossible not to lose weight on 600 calories per day. It could be hormones, water retention, etc, that's making it appear that you aren't losing. Right now, the scale owes you, and it will come with a big WOOSH!! (possible after a day or 2 of peeing your brains out!) Just keep doing what you are doing! Log your food and stick to your plan!
