    Surgery and hair

I haven't had my WLS surgery yet but to be honest, braids during my surgery is ideal. I say this because I had a hysterectomy a couple of years ago and had my hair in long senegalese twists. I remember worrying about my twists being a problem but I just threw it in a bun at the top of my head and had absolutely no problems -- it never got in the way and I was in the hospital for 3 nights. I think that as long as you're able to put it up, you shouldn't have any problems at all during your hospital stay. Best of luck on your upcoming surgery!

    Hairloss

My doctor asked me if I would rather lose hair or not lose weight. He also asked if I had seen any bald patients from WLS. My hair has been falling out for about 2 months (suregery was 2/9/12). I have thick hair too and I think it looks like I am losing even more since it is long too. I am finding it hard to adjust to thin hair and can't wait til it grows back in. I have been taking Biotin and an extra vitamin a day, but that doesn't seem to help at all.

Thanks for sharing that it makes me feel so much better knowing not all of my hair will go.

    Hairloss

I know everyone fears this, but I would like to share a small bit of priceless information. You will lose hair, there is no avoiding it. You can take all the vitamins possible to minimize the loss but it will happen. When I met the doctor I am going to be using at a seminar he explained all of this. After he was finished and we all had horrified looks on our faces, he asked one final question. How many weight loss patients do you see bald? Good question, I look to the other side of the room where all the beautiful, and handsome skinny people were sitting and NOT one of them was bald. You hair is going to thin, but it will come back, and you should Never GO BALD...
  6. I had really given up. If I lost any weight it was an accident!! I was so embarrassed to be seen in public places. My paranoia was pretty bad. I quit going to parties with my husbands friends & hated to see the relatives at Christmas. My attitude was so bad, I was an angry woman; angry at myself for being so weak! At 63, my doc told me I had a hiatal hernia and I needed surgery. I had heard many weight loss stories but didn't think I could do it. Don't ask me why, it was my "I give up" attitude I guess, plus I was so embarrassed to even talk about it. Even with my doc, who I feel very comfortable. Well, when I started to talk to the surgeon about the surgery I had to have I jokingly said, "while you are in there, why don't you put a band on" then I laughed. I fully expected him to say no, we can't do both. Thankfully he said great idea, make it happen. I had to find a new surgeon ( he gave me a recommendation), started all the pre op work and am now 6 weeks post op. I feel so much better. what a miracle, that I work hard to make happen every day!!! this is not a free ride, if we don't work - it won't happen....

    Im so confused! Help!

At one year, I had lost 178 pounds. If you're doing research, you're already ahead of the game. Going into any weight loss surgery informed is s important. Good luck
  8. Thanks so much fluffy. I am sorry to hear about your best friend ... she was much too young to die. I totally understand how you are still missing her terribly. My therapist called me back and we talked for a bit. She gave me a couple of breathing exercises that have helped with stress in the past. I will see her Saturday morning. I must allow myself to mourn and grieve the loss of my friend. Eating will not ease my pain ... I must make that my mantra. I won't give up! Thank you again. Hugs ~Fran
  9. Thanks Melody, I haven't been a wreck like this in a very long time. I know that I will get through this, I just don't want to damage my band - or my weight loss - in the process. Thanks for your prayers and thoughts, they are much appreciated. ~Fran

    Sleeve with high BMI

Trust me people have all sorts of opinions about what other people should do. Don’t get weight loss surgery, they knew someone who did and didn’t lose any weight. Don’t get this specific type of surgery, don’t expect to lose all the weight, etc etc. Weight loss is eating at a calorie deficit. Surgery helps us eat at this deficit by providing a physical restriction. Literally the only difference between losing 80 lbs and 180 lbs is eating at that deficit for longer. You can do it, just stay patient and keep the course!

    Not enough protein

If you don't get enough protein you will: Slow down your healing. Slow down your weight loss. Slow down your metabolism. Lose your hair. Negatively affect your muscles, skin, and other organs like your heart. If you are young, it will stunt your growth. You can eventually die (from heart problems, etc.)

    Weight Plateau

My health care partner nurse told me to increase my protein by 10 - 20 grams a day because I felt that my weight loss was slowing. I was doing between 50 and 60. So I did and I lost 6.2 lbs this week!!

    Pre opt diet weight loss

My surgeon didn't have a pound loss goal before surgery but did put me on a strict post op 800 calorie regimen. His nutritionist told me he liked to see maximum weight loss in the immediate post op period. She said it was a great kick start to the process. I lost fifty pounds before my first fill and she was right. It did create great momentum and build good eating habits.
  15. I think you need to relax into it. Also if possible separate out your aspiration to lose more from your fear of regaining what you have lost (and kept off). What you have done is to lose 82lbs of fat and to keep it off for 2 years. Absolutely amazing - you used the tool surgery gave you so well. There was a bottoming out before that, which is really common. Sounds like the mid 150s might be the new set point you got from surgery. If you keep trying to push diet and exercise to get below that again you might find it difficult/impossible to maintain, and you could even mess with that new set point. I know we are human and will always aspire to more/better/faster, but could you live with being 155 if you measured that against the loss of the pressure/guilt to lose those 'last 18lbs'? With regard to regaining everything you have lost, I suspect there's a little devil whispering that to all of us. Shove a big wedge of cucumber in his mouth and shut him right up. You are the BOSS of weight loss.
  16. Hey everyone! I am almost 3 months post op sleeve and down 60 lbs, woo hoo! I was just curious when other sleevers noticed that their weight loss stopped? 12 months? 18? Only 6? I am still hoping to lose a lot more and I am currently in a stall, so I need reassurance that I will still lose! Thanks everyone!
  17. Weight Watchers is the only weight loss program I’ve had significant success with. I lost 76lbs in a year and have kept it off for over a year so far following the program. But my genetics are against me and I can’t seem to lose any more, hence my decision to do the sleeve. I have PCOS and take nearly the highest dose of Metformin, and it has just become obvious that I would benefit from the sleeve to help me reach my goals. I was wondering if anyone else who has had surgery follows the Weight Watchers program? I have found it to be a great framework for building a healthy lifestyle and would like to keep using it as such after surgery, if I can. Thoughts?
  18. I had my surgery on Dec. 19- In the past 2 days I have been unable to sleep, feel the Adrenalin running through my system, chewing my nails, feeling hyper, anxious--NOT depressed. I am excited about my surgery and potential weight loss. Could this be because I have had a few cups of regular coffee and tea instead of decaf? Has anyone else had this problem????

    Special Day today

Happy birthday and happy weight loss success to you!!
  20. Hi Everyone, Today is a very special day for me. It is my birthday and I am 66 today. What makes it so special is that I am able to do things I never dreamed I would do. I am healthy, happy and have added so many years to my life because I had WLS and have maintained my weight loss of 105 for almost 3 years. I did this for ME and NO one else. I feel so very blessed that I had WLS. Hugs, Suzanne

    First Fill !

As I have previously mentioned I have had one fill on August 15th & I don't what happened but I don't feel as full & have been at the same weight plateau since and done nothing different and not loss an ounce ! My family has said for me to go get The Gastric Bypass now & I was just banded 6-4-2013 !!! Any answers or help ? I just want to continue losing!
  22. I have turned to this forum in hopes of finding some answers. I have my VSG back in Sept 12, I was 340-345 pounds at a 49.9% BMI. I am currently 245-250 and 31% BMI. I work out 3-4 times a week with Push Ups, Running 1mile on the tread mill, and play Airsoft on the weekends. For the past 3-5months my weight has not changed. I am starting to get concerned I will not drop any more. Is this normal. The Vitamins I take daily are Multi Vitamin, Calcium Citrate, A & D, Fish Oil, Creatine, BCAA, B12 and have a 16oz whey Protein shake every morning. I eat eggs, chicken, Fish and some pork along with Fruits and Veggies every day. Drink about 3-5 cups of coffee with the liquid Hazelnut creamer daily, and Drink 50-5oz of Water daily. Am I doing something wrong. I feel great, but think I should be dropping weight.
  23. Just my $0.02, but you asked for advice to help lose weight. If you want to lose, you can't have a "little treat" every day. It doesn't work that way. At least switch to decaf and a sugar free and fat free creamer. Caffeine stimulates your appetite and dehydrates you. Also, 100 - 200 g of protein is pretty high. It isn't like you are running marathons weekly. I suspect you are way over your calories for weight loss. The best thing you could do is go back to your nutritionist an d get back on the wagon with a set number of calories, grams of protein, carbs, and fats and track it. Good luck to you. Remember, the sleeve is a tool. You still need to follow the rules and keep discipline for success. I wouldn't say 100-200g is high since my nut told me to aim for 130g when working out as much as I am. But how the hell you getting anywhere near 200g? I strugle for 100 most days and to get 130 I am doing two Protein drinks and two Protein Bars and two meals. Even then I some times fall short.
  24. I had my bypass surgery on April 11th, and lost about 18 lbs in one week. However, since then, the weight is the same and frankly it's unbelievably frustrating. Does anyone know why this might be happening?
