How did you respond to critics?
BBdoodle replied to Cecilia's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
I only told a few people about my surgery, very close friends and co-workers and close family members. If someone compliments me on my weight loss I say "THANK YOU" if they ask how am I doing it I say "diet and exercise". The people that I did tell about the surgery were 110% supportive of my decision. You really don't owe anyone an explaination on your personal business. My fav. response to people who ask very private questions is... when they ask a uncomfortable question... you answer with "why do you ask" or "why do you want to know" your questions with a question puts them on the spot just like they made you uncomfortable. You keep private what YOU want to keep private. If someone is negavtive with your choices that is their problem not yours. This surgery works for YOU.. thats all that matters. -
Just One Of The Guys....shoot Me

I also have worked with more men that women and honestly prefer it that way. They do not always think, and sometimes you have to roll with the punches! When we are carrying extra weight and rude things are said most of the time we do not tell them how we really feel. I have found that if something is said even in joking, call them on it. It doesn't have to be rude, but in many cases it is the Pot calling the kettle black! Many of the times it is the ones that are unsure of themselves that will make comments like that. If they are single men, I have found that comments back such as: "so does that line really work with women? I bet your popular with the ladies? Date much? If married: does your wife THINK your funny? Do you talk to your wife like that? I am sure not you might walk in with two black eyes. even a flat out.. knock you down.. I don't think so I am not rude like some people Or.. Weebles wobble but they don't fall down..so you will pop right back up!! (I have used this with a guy who pretty much said what he said to you.. It might not be the nicest but I had had enough.. and he NEVER said anything negative again but was very respectful!!! I do not advocate being mean, or rude but in a workplace , but sometimes you do need to give them a little smart ass back. In regards to censoring your blog, its your blog... I read them and enjoy them. If someone is offended so be it they can skip over it. It is obvious from your other posts that you do not talk like you work in a shipyard!! Grin I am spiritual but nothing you said offends me. If it bothers someone they can just block and I think your blogs will be blocked along with it. -
Hey everyone, I was just wondering if anyone knows whether it is safe to play a contact sport being banded? Now that I've lost weight and can exercise without the risk of keeling over, I joined my college rugby team and have been practicing for a semester. If you don't know anything about rugby it involves hard-core tackling without any padding. You would think I would have thought of the concerns before playing. It actually just occurred to me when I realized how easily I could feel my port. Now that I have games coming up I've begun to question whether or not it's safe to play a contact sport. Let me know if anyone has heard from doctors or anyone about this issue.

Today at around 7 I will be attending my seminar. I'm nervous not really sure what to expect of what will happen. I need this, I don't just want it I need it in order to survive. I had a nightmare last night and now I really don't know what effect the rest of my personal affairs will have on my surgery. I bring this up only because with the weight gain many things have changed in my life. I was athletic in high school, very active, and focus on the tasks that I had to complete. With the weight gain myself esteem seemed to evaporate. I allowed myself to do and engage in activities that I knew were more damaging to my mental and emotional well being. I guess one of the areas that have really been affected has been my love life. When I was what society thought was acceptable I never really had a trouble finding someone to love or be attracted to me. It seemed as if men were more interested in me as a person. Now it seems as if I live my life as a sex toy to be played with at the whim of men. I know that this might nit be true. And I also know that this has alot to do with me as a person but I can't help but wonder. I have come a far way in knowing who I am and what I want. I don't want to continue being the fat girl, the sex toy the person that gets used. I have fought hard to hang on and rebuild the sancitity of normalcy that is my mind. I guess this is turning into some kind of confusing rant so I'll try to wrap it up. My new life is being embarked upon.

Hate having to lie to my family
swizzly replied to mina's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I didn't tell my family. Still haven't. (It's the second surgery I've had in a foreign country, but it's the country I live in lol.) I reckon I will eventually tell them next time I see them, as they will likely be curious about how I've lost weight. -
hi all, I am very new to these kind of forums . I had failed my lap band that i did in 2007, initially i lost about 50 lbs with it but then i developed acid reflux n my doc has to unfill it to the point that i started to gain weight and in the past 5 years with no liquid in band and a pregnancy, i gained all my weight back. I wanna to convert to by pass my surgeon said that sleeve is better option for me so i got my revision to sleeve done on this thursday may10th, 2012. The day of surgery i was weighing 265 lbs ,mmy surgey went, upper GI xray look good the second day. I m home now n trying to keep my self hydrated. I m not really sure how much i should be drinking or eating, i m just sipping isopure zero carb all day n water all day. Anyway i m gonna weigh my self 2 weeks post op and then will post updates, meanwhile if u guys can suggest how much/ when/ what to eat. By the way i m on full liquids now for next 2 weeks. Thank you all. I'm not sure what I'd tell my BFF. I'd be scared of losing her too. I suppose I'd tell her to go with her heart/gut. And yesterday MY gut and heart were fine. I have read about all sorts of complications up until this point and they didnt phase me. I'm not sure what happened today, it just kindof hot me out of the blue. We'll wee how I feel in the next couple of days. I still have a good 2-3 weeks before I pay my deposit and book my flight. Maybe I'm just at a point where this is turning more from excitement to readiness. I think this is just something I really need to do an ill regret it if I don't. I need to be a better mommy. A confident one. One who actually goes places and is happy. Right now I just stay in the house almost all the time. I just don't feel like being seen in public. I've lost 60 lbs alone before. Felt great but didnt stick to it and Literally gained it al back as soon As I lost it. I can't continue to live this way. Oh and hiosiergirl, my rump is rediculous too!!! Zomg!! O.o

The doctor at the seminar said that everyone is required to lose weight before surgery and for him it's based on your starting weight but I have heard about people needing to lose a % of their weight. I was just wondering what others had to do.

I totally feel you on this. I am 5'6 presently weighting 166 and get lots of compliments but I DON'T SEE what others see. I still feel and look fat. I am six mts out. I too thought losing this weight would make me happy but it has not. Tired so darn tired all the time. Doctor said lab work was good.

Experience Bandsters- Please tell me...
cnr1983 replied to Patterba's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I've had no problem with taking pills - truth is, if you can't get a pill down, then your band is probably too tight. Some prefer it that way but I've opted for a slightly looser band to avoid issues of malnutrition etc. Pills go down fine and I'm not hungry at all so it goes to show - you don't need a super tight band to lose weight. -
New to Group. How full will I be?
Bermuda replied to Bermuda's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thankyou so much for your help. As I said I am new to the website and I didnt think there would actually be people interested enough in each other to try and help. I really appreciate that. I understand what you all said. I used to be a weight lifting head and running lover but since I gained so much weight I have been out of it. It is so good to see someone doing bootcamp. I cant wait to do that stuff again. Thanks for the good descriptions of "full" I know exactly what you mean. Thanks again -
You guys are an awesome confidence boost! Just what I needed. I'm allowed sugar free drinks. I think I've drank my weight in crystal light and propel in three days. I am doing a little better today with cravings. 12 more days!

I am a newbie here, lots of great info thanks. I have cigna, I started my 6 months of nutrition counsel teo months a go, my BMI was about 37-38 in the two months I put on about ten lbs, the nutritionist says that it won't bear well if I gain weight during the six months of eval. I don't want to disqualify myself. I do have co morbidities, HBP. Will the small weight gain make me lose my insurance coverage? Thanks for the help

Phranp replied to allisonpaige's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Please hang in there, I am sure that someone on this forum will have great advice for you. I, on the other hand, have a question. You lost 150 lbs with the lap band, had to have some Fluid taken out and gained almost 50 lbs, right? I totally commend you on losing the weight. As a bandster myself I know that it takes a lot of work to get the weight off. Some people think we have "taken the easy way out" by having WLS, but we both know better than that. My question has to do with the mind and changes in the way we feel about food. After having the band for 4 years your feelings/attitude/thinking about food didn't change? This scares me because after being banded for 18 months and struggling with the "mind" or "emotional" part of my food issues even now -- although I am much, much, MUCH better than before banding -- your story makes me think that maybe I will never get a handle on this. What do you think happened? Do you feel that your attitude about food is the same as before, similar or completely different? Sorry that I am "asking" rather than giving advice. I really do think you can shed some light on how the band works long term. Thanks. All the best to you on your journey. Don't lose hope ... we are all here for you. You can start again with us and lose those pounds in no time. ~F -

Good luck to you! What is the 6mth diet for? What does it tell them? If you loose weight will they say - Oh you can do it yourself? I don't understand why they do that. I know pre-op why they do but ?? It will be a couple yrs for me in Ontario so I will likely go with self pay in awhile and get a loan to pay over 5 yrs or so. Worth it to me. I want a life back now not in 2 or 3 yrs. Keep us posted  -

For those of you who have had or are having the 3 week stall, I found a great article that explains the reason why this happens. It's about plateau's in general, but it really sheds some light on the 3 week stall. It doesn't use that exact phrase, but you'll know it when you read it. The author uses the phrase," the inevitable stall"....here is the crux of it. "A "stall" a few weeks out is inevitable, and here's why. Our bodies use glycogen for short term energy storage. Glycogen is not very soluble, but it is stored in our muscles for quick energy -- one pound of glycogen requires 4 lbs of Water to keep it soluble, and the average glycogen storage capacity is about 2 lbs. So, when you are not getting in enough food, your body turns first to stored glycogen, which is easy to break down for energy. And when you use up 2 lbs of glycogen, you also lose 8 lbs of water that was used to store it -- voila -- the "easy" 10 lbs that most people lose in the first week of a diet. As you stay in caloric deficit, however, your body starts to realize that this is not a short term problem. You start mobilizing fat from your adipose tissue and burning fat for energy. But your body also realizes that fat can't be used for short bursts of energy -- like, to outrun a saber tooth tiger. So, it starts converting some of the fat into glycogen, and rebuilding the glycogen stores. And as it puts back the 2 lbs of glycogen into the muscle, 8 lbs of water has to be stored with it to keep it soluble. So, even though you might still be LOSING energy content to your body, your weight will not go down or you might even GAIN for a while as you retain water to dissolve the glycogen that is being reformed and stored." http://www.dsfacts.c...or-plateau.html

Hello my name is Joy I been going through this process since April I went to the 3 month program and was denied because I needed doctor notes. One month later my Nut said lets do the 3 months over so I did... summited the new documentation yesterday. My only concern is I weight more in this 3 month program then the last 3 month program but no weight gain with in the 3 month program... Does anyone have advice on this. The 2 separate programs should not be compared into one?

Hello and welcome! Congrats on making the weight loss surgery decision. Things might seem a tad overwhelming now but before you know it, your day will be here too. I'm three months out from my RNY and I couldn't be happier! Best of luck! -
Pre-Op Diet Starts Tomorrow. SO confused and overwhelmed.
DaleCruse replied to SummerShadow's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It sounds like you've created a story about why you can't lose weight: "It's SO confusing! Might as well not even try! I'll end up a failure anyway!" Doctor's orders - like so much in life - is open to interpretation. Should you get 60, 80, or 100 grams of protein daily? The exact number doesn't matter. Get between 60-100 grams & you'll be good. Consider how else this story is impacting your life & really learn to flip the script to achieve a different outcome. You are not alone. Good luck! -
Sleeved 13 May 2014
Shirley Hanson replied to mrs-adams's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Thank you for reply. I guess I am still nervous about my inability to exercise. I cannot walk very far without pain and I worry about the ability to lose weight. I know with the weight loss that I should have less pain but I don't know if it is going to be enough. I am confident the diet will be manageable but if I cant take celebrex i am not sure how mobile iI will be. I know I am worrying to much but I only have one shot at this. I know when I did weight watchers I just stopped losing. I got so discouraged I figured I might as well give up. I can't thank you enough for responding so quickly and will keep you posted. I have just started the required testing. I have to do a colonoscopy and will have to stop my meds for a few days. I will see how I do. The arthritis is not going away so I have to be reasonable. God Bless -
Surgery tomorrow and i'm terrified!!
janinemaire replied to vicki s's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am right with you Vicki, my surgery is 8:30 tomorrow. I cannot wait till its over. I think its good to try to keep busy today. I have a paper for school I have to complete and then do housework, plus were busy with Halloween. I have been on a liquid diet since yesterday and I am so jealous of your breakfast, that is my favorite meal. I don't have to drink that drink you have to. Good luck with that. Were going to be fine with the surgery and remember in a few months how much weight were going to lose. Were going to be able to shop any where we want and enjoy things we haven't been able to do. When are you coming home, I come home Wednesday. Please post soon as you can, I will. I'll pray for you and everyone getting there surgery this week. Talk to you soon, Janine
