  1. Hello, I am 67 and just had the sleeve done on 10/9/19. I am too early in the process to share experiences because at this point I am only on full liquids. Pretty much constantly drinking and also making sure I get enough protein. First 2 days from surgery itself was a little rough but nothing unbearable. I had to stay in hospital an extra day because I could not get enough fluids because I was so sick from the anesthesia which is something I expected from previous anesthesia. I am 5 days post op and feel great. No pain. Just tender and sore from the procedure itself. Cant lift, pull, drag etc etc for several wks. Dont worry able the age thing, it's how you feel within your self of if you should have it or not. I have high B/P , high cholesterol, osteoarthritis, COPD (from smoking too many years). My BMI was around 36. Beginning of process I was 213lbs and day of surgery 197lbs. If I didn't have those other medical conditions I wouldn't have even been consisdered a candidate for the sleeve because of my BMI. Not seeing results yet, still getting rid of the tremendous amounts of IV fluids I received in the hospital. Extra fluids should be gone in a couple more days. I hope this is some useful informative thoughts for you.

    Weight loss

I'm losing an average of 10 lbs per month. I had my surgery 7/30 and have lost 28 lbs since that day but 45 lbs since pre op. I am stalling constantly.
  3. Love this!! Here is my list: 1. Crossing my legs when I sit 2. Wearing high heels 3. Posting pics of myself on facebook (right now it's just pics of my kids!) 4. Going to high school reunions, weddings, funerals...basically all the places I currently avoid for fear of running into someone who doesn't know how fat I got since high school. 5. Buying an outfit b/c I actually like it, but b/c it's the only thing that fits. 6. Going to my husband's work parties, etc, and not being embarrassed for everyone to see his fat wife (he is very good looking and I know people expect him to have a thin, beautiful, wife) 7. Wearing stretch pants to go to the gym, not b/c they are the only thing that fits. 8. Being a healthy role model for my children. 9. Keeping up with my husband, doing physical activities, hiking, bike riding, etc. 10. Going to a party or restaurant to enjoy the company, and not focusing on the food.
  4. What are you most looking forward as you progress on your journey? I'll start off 1. Not having to use the handicap stall in the bathroom 2. Being able to fasten a normal seatbelt on an airplane 3. Being able to put on my own sneakers 4. Doing my own pedicure 5. Being able to look at cute clothes again 6. Having a real hug (you know, when the other person can get their arms ALL the way around) 7. Exercise that doesn't hurt 8. Hopefully getting rid of most of my medications 9. Not being described by others as "fat" or "big" 10. Being able to keep up with my grandchildren Okay, that's a start. You get the idea. I didn't even mention the joy of being able to shop for clothes and not feel like I have to hide the size label when I take it to the cash register. I look forward to hearing what you all think.
  5. So today is surgery day I just checked in at the hospital. Surgery in 2 hours. I'm so excited not really nervous at all. It's been a long 10 months of preparation so I'm definitely ready to take the next step. Here goes nothing🙏🏻

Congrats..... I am sure it feels great. I know you will successfully make the transition to maintenance. New_Me 2019

    GOOOOOAALLLLL

Glad to hear this! I just hit GW last week and now I’m transitioning to maintenance. From what I read, many people will still lose about 6-8% more of their excess fat after goal, so I’m planning on about 10 more before it settles in.

    Weight loss

Don’t worry, it is pretty common sometimes. I had my surgery 2/6/19 and probably during week 2, I logged just 810 calories.... FOR THE ENTIRE WEEK... I remember being panicked and emailing my NUT 2-3 times with my food logs (or lack thereof) and she reassured me that many people have this issue. 8 months later I’m at GW and I don’t have any obvious deficiencies I lost 23 pounds in the first 12 days, then lost 2 more pounds over the next 24 days. It freaked me out, but at the end of the day I had lost 25 pounds in 5 weeks which is absolutely in the normal range. The first couple of months are super weird and our bodies are really confused and the scale will seem bipolar. Ride it out. Get in water and protein and it will even out. Everyone will have a slightly different journey.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

Yes! I know there will always be issues with getting enough nutrients which is why ultimately I chose sleeve over bypass even though I was risking GERD issues. Fingers crossed that I will continue to NOT have reflux issues, but only time will tell. The few times since surgery that I’ve allowed myself foods from my pre-surgery lifestyle, I did have some extra GERD, so it’s an excellent negative feedback loop to remind me to stay on program so I don’t mind that. Still waiting the results from my DXA scan. I’ve never had issues with osteopenia in the past so mostly I had it done to get a baseline for the start of maintenance. Re sizing: I’m not 100% sure where I’ll look best. Currently I’m somewhere in the 8/10/medium range depending on cut, brand, and style. I wouldn’t mind dropping 1 more size to be 6/8/looser fitting medium but I do worry about looking gaunt. The last time I was a size 6 I was in my early 20’s so therefore I was young. Being 30 years older and being that same size will be interesting because who knows how it will look? For now the plan is to take it on a monthly basis and see where this all goes. The FFF (former fat female) in me cringes at the thought of putting back on any unhealthy weight so I’ll continue to be diligent in logging all my macros and making absolutely sure vitamins don’t get skipped.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

I worry that the long term effect of low calorie intake is malnutrition. We have to be sure every bite is as nutritionally dense as possible and that we are faithful with our vitamins. I know I have some malabsorption going on, especially with fats, and I am already osteopenic. I agree that I could happily consume under 1,000 cal/day and feel satisfied. Like you, I could actually lose 15-20 more pounds and still be the normal range, but I would look terrible, and honestly, I am building my size 10 wardrobe and don't want to get to a smaller size - too expensive!!! I am getting back to my 16/8 or 14/!0 window and adding in 1 day of 24 fasting per week. But I want to continue exercising to do some more triathlons and backpacking trips. So it will be an adventure to see how to do that with the IF. I do not want to give it up again like I did last month to train. That was not a happy place. I felt sluggish and more hungry, and just wanted to eat all the time. I think slipping in an extra protein shake, an extra yogurt power bowl, and/or a bowl of protein soup is the way to go. They go down easily without leaving me uncomfortable. It is definitely a journey and I'm glad there are others like you who are on it with me! It's so good to get ideas and feedback. I cannot imagine going this alone.
  11. It didn’t feel like I had surgery until today. I also lost 10 lbs today.
  12. Wow just wow. So my surgery was 6 days ago. They gave me a morphine drip after the surgery. That morphine shut down my intestines and ability to go bms. So this whole week protein shakes and clear protein drinks have made physically nauseous. I can’t tolerate clear or milky shakes. The only thing attractive to me are green tea, Campbell’s chicken noodle soup broth, sugar free popsicles. So I tried a cookie today. I tried a protein chip that I chewed 30 times. Same with the cookie. I also didn’t get any stomach distress from both! Ive literally been taking miralax powder every morning as well. But this afternoon, I went to the bathroom 10xs @#$&&*(()))’,, wtf! My stomach is so freaking sensitive! I went into immediate dumping syndrome after my stomach and intestines woke up a week later. I know I need protein, but shakes and clear sweet drinks make me physically sick. I hope I can start on puréed eggs scrambled, and actually chicken noodles and soft chicken. I need protein and I don’t want dumping syndrome that I went thru 10 times today after my intestines woke up finally after being shut down for a week. My stomach is so sensitive. I hope I can try blended bananas too since my stomach is freaking out. Now I see what is crazy sensitive about my stomach.

    February 2019 weight loss buds

It’s a seriously weird dilemma. That being said, if I lose even another 15 pounds, I’m still in the normal BMI range so I won’t panic. What I refuse to do is intentionally overeat—eating over my BMR- so if it takes me another 2-4 months to get to that levels then I guess I continue to lose. Right now I’m seriously happy with 800 calories/day and it’s actually something that takes planning for me to even get to 800. If I were to not pre-plan and log food I almost always come in around 500-600 daily. One thing I’m doing now though as I figure out how to transition is to ditch the more aggressive IF and stick with nothing more restrictive than 16:8. I’m even going to plan 2 days this week to open my window to 10 hours. Pretty sure I can do a protein shake in the morning without compromising my water too much

    OOTD

I have owned this shirt for 10 years and it has always been too tight for me to wear. Today is the first day I was able to wear it! Lol, but I forgot the Patriots played on Thursday night (sacrilege!) so I put it away until Monday’s game.
  18. Thanks all for the post-op info! My surgery is next Monday 10/21.

    Gastric bypass or sleeve

I have a girlfriend who had gastric bypass 12 years ago. She was at 450 pounds, got down to 200 but has since gone back up to 250. I had another friend and cousin who had the bypass too and they also have put the weight back on. I was a medical biller for 25 years and thoroughly researched all three options before choosing the sleeve. I had my surgery on 8/21/19. My starting weight was 315 pounds. In the two years prior to my surgery, I managed to lose 35 pounds on my own with diet and exercise but it took two years. The two weeks of liquid diet before and after my surgery quick started my weight loss. On the morning of my surgery, I weighed in at 280. They had me up and walking two hours after my surgery. I was given one dose of Tylenol after my surgery and never needed any other type of pain med. It is absolutely wonderful to not be able to finish half of what was a regular meal for me. As if today, I weighed in at 237. All I can say is that the sleeve has been a godsend for me.

    Pumpkin pie

https://blog.bariatriceating.com/2015/10/no-pie-pumpkin-pie/ Ingredients One 15-ounce can Libby's pumpkin purée ⅓ cup Truvia sugar replacer or ⅔ cup Splenda granulated ½ teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon ½ teaspoon ground ginger ¼ teaspoon ground cloves 2 large eggs One 12-ounce can evaporated milk Splenda sweetened whipped cream Instructions Preheat oven to 350° F. Mix the pumpkin, Truvia, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves in a large bowl. Beat in the eggs. Gradually stir in evaporated milk. Pour into glass or ceramic baking dish. Bake until knife inserted near the center comes out clean - this time can vary greatly depending on how big a baking dish you use. Cook until done, but if you use a pie plate, 25 to 40 minutes is a guide. Cool on wire rack, then either serve at room temperature or chill. Serve with whipped cream.

    I feel discouraged.

I had my VS done in March 2019 I am 7 months out and have hypothyroid. I have lost 109 lbs and can still only eat 600 calories a day and I’m not hungry. My nutritionist does not go by calories she told me to go by protein, water, fat, carbs and sugar intake. I do 60/80 grams of protien, 90 oz water, 10 grams of fat, 35 grams of carbs and no more than 10 grams of sugar a day n I am doing well.

    Can't stop losing weight

I totally get it. The body dysmorphia is real and normal. Sometimes I feel a little lost - like where did the "other me" go? Where is she? But she is here in a new funny looking body. It really does take a while for the brain to catch up with the physical changes. But nothing beats a size 10 over a size 24!!!! I am trying to learn how to embrace and value all my new sharpei wrinkles and folds. I think I look really old, but others say I look younger, so go figure. Maybe it is because I have a lot more pep in my step now - not dragging myself around on limping knees. Hang in there. You will gradually morph from the 267 mentally fat girl into the little girl you really are and were really meant to be! You are a butterfly that has just emerged from the lumpy old cocoon. You have to give it time to let your wings dry!
